1. A new decentralized nonlinear voltage controller for multimachine power systems

Abstract

A new decentralized nonlinear voltage controller for multimachine power systems is proposed in this paper. The nonlinear n-machine power system model is first linearized and decoupled over the whole operating region by using the direct feedback linearization (DFL) technique. Then a decentralized nonlinear voltage controller is developed by use of the robust control theory. Performance of the proposed controller in a three-machine example system is simulated. The simulation results show that both voltage regulation and system stability enhancement can be achieved with this proposed controller regardless of the system operating conditions. Abstract

High voltage transformers in power distribution substations generate a mostly periodic acoustic noise with its fundamental component of nearly twice the system frequency. Conventional passive measures such as placing sound barriers or absorbers can be very expensive if used in the reduction of this noise. The low frequency and periodic nature of the transformer noise implies that it may be controlled by active means. This paper presents a design and implementation of electronic circuits for active control of acoustic noise. Experimental results show that there is a significant reduction (about 20 dB) in acoustic noise due to this proposed active noise control (ANC) system.

Abstract

A dual-stage actuator servo system is a promising solution for very high-density disk drives of the future. The requirements for its transient response and robustness are much tighter than for a single-stage one. In this paper, a new variable structure controller with an optimal and dynamic sliding surface is developed to realize satisfactory track seeking and following. Moreover, the servo system with the controller can adopt parametric uncertainties and time variations, and has strong rejection to external disturbances. Simulation results for the closed-loop system are presented in the paper.

The effectiveness of the controller on voltage stability enhancement is studied on a three-machine nine-bus power system. 15. ROBUST POWER SYSTEM LOAD‐FREQUENCY CONTROLLER DESIGN BASED ON H∞OPTIMIZATION APPROACH

Abstract

An H∞controller based on the standard H∞control design approach is proposed for power system load‐frequency control with system parametric uncertainties. The variation bounds of power system parameters are obtained by changing parameters by 30%‐50% simultaneously from their typical values. The existing H∞control technique is applied to design a load‐frequency controller for power systems. The design procedure is given. The proposed H∞controller is simple, effective and can ensure that the overall system is asymptotically stable for all admissible uncertainties. Our simulation results show that for the example system the proposed H∞load‐frequency controller can achieve good performance even in the presence of generation rate constraint.

16. A new decentralized robust controller design for multi-area load–frequency control via incomplete state feedback

Abstract

This paper deals with load–frequency control of a multi-area power installation. The robust control theory is utilized to decouple the areas for a decentralized robust load–frequency controller. The proposed controller ensures that the overall multi-area power system is asymptotically stable. A new technique is included to exclude feedback from any immeasurable state. The product comprises a set of local load–frequency controllers, one for each area. The design and operation of each local controller requires solely the corresponding area's parameters and state measurements. Measurements of the immeasurable states are unnecessary. System parameter uncertainties and generation rate constraints are included in the simulation study of a three-area power system. Good results are reported. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
