The proportional-integrator (PI) controller in the synchronous reference frame (dq-frame) and the proportional-resonant (PR) controller in the stationary reference frame (αβ-frame) are two typical linear current control schemes for three-phase voltage source converters. It is generally believed that the plant model is mathematically uncoupled in αβ-frame. Hence, the decoupling control required to attenuate the axis cross-coupling effect in dq-frame is regarded as not necessary in αβ-frame. However, detailed analysis with complex coefficient transfer functions reveals differences in the control performance between the fully decoupled PI control scheme in dq-frame and the PR control scheme in αβ-frame. When regulating sinusoidal currents in αβ-frame, the α-axis and β-axis current references are strongly correlated with each other, which implies a cross-coupling effect equivalent to that of dq-frame. In analogy to the dq-frame decoupling control, cross-coupling terms can be employed together with the conventional PR control scheme. It can bring the benefit of improving the transient response of current tracking and reducing the sensitivity of the resonant controller to frequency variation, especially for low-switching-frequency applications with limited current control bandwidth. Furthermore, the cross-coupling terms based on reference current feed-forward are proposed to improve the performance of both positive- and negative-sequence current control. Axes cross-coupling in dq-frame will deteriorate the current control performance, especially for applications with low switching/sampling frequency. Decoupling methods based on inductor current state feedback and complex vector proportional-integrator controllers are usually performed to solve this problem. In this paper, an alternative decoupling method based on preprocessed reference current feed-forward is proposed, which can provide excellent decoupling performance even with considerable control delay. The current control of grid-connected voltage source converters is analyzed with complex-coefficient transfer functions. It is revealed that the decoupling performance of current control schemes is closely related to the symmetry of current closed-loop transfer function bode diagrams. The current closed-loop transfer function should show a standard symmetrical bode diagram with respect to 0 Hz, if axes cross-coupling is well decoupled. A quantitative index named cross-coupling function is then proposed to analyze and comprehensively compare the decoupling performance of the proposed method and existing ones in terms of the influence of the control delay, inductance estimation error, grid frequency deviation, and voltage disturbance. Doubly-fed induction generators are one of the most popular machines for variable-speed wind turbine. However, they are very sensitive to grid fault since the stator is directly connected to the grid. This paper analyzes the low-voltage ride-through performance of a doubly-fed induction generator-based wind turbine under balanced grid fault. An improved demagnetization control, immune to system parameter variation, is proposed to shorten the dynamic process. The investigation shows that the proposed method increases the probability of a successful ride-through at the recovery moment of balanced grid fault. Feasibility region for a representatively sized system is also investigated for balanced grid fault. The LCL filter is widely used in grid connected converters for good harmonic mitigation performance. With pulse width modulation strategy, converter terminal voltage contains various sideband harmonic components together with expected components corresponding to the modulation wave, especially under a low switching frequency. Considerable resonant current can be generated if the undesired sideband harmonic voltage is located around the LCL resonant frequency. With the background of a medium voltage three-level wind power converter, where the switching frequency is as low as 1.5 kHz, a resonant current depression strategy is proposed against undesired sideband harmonic voltage under low switching frequency. Additional compensators are adopted in the converter current loop. Depending on the system mathematical model, two solutions, a Butterworth low pass filter and a notch filter, based on phase compensation and amplitude compensation, are proposed in this paper. It is shown that the Butterworth low pass filter exhibits better resonant current depression performance, while the notch filter performance is better in terms of system stability. Z-source inverter provides a competitive single-stage dc–ac power conversion with the capability of both buck and boost voltage regulation. In order to maximize voltage gain and to increase efficiency, this paper proposes an improved pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategy. By adjusting the shoot-through duty ratio of one-phase leg, it regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage, which is the same as the instantaneous maximum of three-phase line voltage in one switching time period (Ts) . And the other two-phase legs maintain the fixed switching states. Thus, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge is reduced to 1/ 3fs (fs is the frequency corresponding to Ts). The operating principles and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulation and experiments. Compared with the existing PWM strategies, the improved PWM (IPWM) strategy demonstrates higher efficiency under full operation range of low voltage gain (1.27-2) application. However, with the IPWM strategy, the inductor current and capacitor voltage contain six-time-line-frequency ripples, which consequently require large size of the passive components when the output frequency is very low. Thus, it is also suitable for 400–800-Hz medium frequency aircraft and vessel power supply system due to a relatively high output line frequency. Diode-assisted buck–boost voltage-source inverter achieves high voltage gain by introducing a switch-capacitor based high step-up dc–dc circuit between the dc source and inverter bridge. As for the unique structure, various pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies are developed with regard to the chopped intermediate dc-link voltage. In order to maximize voltage gain and increase efficiency, this paper proposes a novel PWM strategy. It regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage in one switching time period ( Ts) the same as the instantaneous maximum value of three-phase line voltage by controlling the front boost circuit. Then, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge can be reduced to 1/3fs (fs = 1/Ts). The operating principle and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulations and experiments. Compared with existing PWM strategies, the new control strategy demonstrates less power device requirement and higher efficiency in high voltage gain applications. It is a more competitive topology for wide range dc/ac voltage regulation in renewable energy applications. Furthermore, with new control strategy, the dc-side inductor current and capacitor voltage contains six-time line-frequency ripples.
