The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the contested politics of global health governance, though we still don't know enough about the dynamics of domestic pandemic responses, or about the relationship between the politics of those responses and the politics of global health governance, both of which have changed significantly in recent decades. Focusing on three cases (HIV/AIDS, SARS, and COVID-19) of cross-border infectious diseases, this article explores the trajectory of China's pandemic responses in the context of globalization. Attending to changing politics at domestic, international, and global levels, I argue that those responses have been a complex combination of China's domestic politics (e.g., priorities, institutions, leadership, and timing), its international relations (especially with the US), and its engagements with global health governance. It is concluded that the increasing divergence of pandemic responses in a time of ubiquitous global health crisis demands urgent attention to the connections (including contestations) between domestic pandemic responses and the evolvement of global health governance from a broader perspective that considers changes in geopolitics. Youth withdrawal or 'stagnant youth' – such as hikikomori in Japan, NEET in Europe, and the lying flat movement in China – has been widely observed in recent decades. Seen as a culture- or geography-based and discrete phenomenon, however, its global connections across times and spaces are overlooked. Through the lens of globality or global consciousness of connectivity, this article explores how a news report on China's lying flat movement was discussed by global youth on Reddit, an online idea exchange platform, and how this collective reading event has enabled their senses of transplanetary connectivity and generational solidarity. I argue that consciousness of connectivity, especially from the perspectives of those who are habitually peripheralized, can function as an important entry point to better understanding the shared predicaments, as well as potentials, of young people who feel stuck or 'out of place and pace' at the current stage of contemporary globalization. Polype ntafluoropropane glycidyl ether (PPFEE), a new random block hydroxyl-terminated polyfluoroether, was synthesized successfully by cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxymethyl) oxirane, and its molecular structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. The PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomers featuring fluorine in their side chains were prepared using PPFEE as soft segments, polyisocyanate polyaryl polymethylene isocyanate as hard segments, and dibutyltin dilaurate as catalysts under different curing conditions. The microphase separation, mechanical performance, and thermal behavior of the elastomers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, uniaxial tensile test, and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. Based on the results, the percentage of hard segments dissolved into the soft segments of elastomers was opposite to the change in breaking strength. The PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomer cured with 20 wt% PAPI at the curing temperature of 50 °C displayed the maximum tensile elongation of 2.26 MPa with an elongation at break of nearly 150%. The increased contents of PAPI can effectively strengthen the tensile strength, and the maximum tensile elongation was 3.04 MPa with an elongation at break of nearly 90% when the content of PAPI was 26 wt%. In addition, the PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomers exhibited excellent resistance to thermal decomposition and a sharp weight loss temperature at around 371 °C. The relatively sparse literature has documented various challenges international migration poses to martial stability, yet we know little about immigrant women's experiences with marital breakdown. Drawing data from a qualitative study of Chinese economic immigrants to Canada, this article explores women's experiences of navigating the processes of this life circumstance, and of how gender—including their senses of changing gender roles in post-immigration and postmarital contexts—plays out in these trajectories. The results of this exploratory study illustrate the value of transcending dichotomous conceptions of the relationship between gender and migration, and of opening spaces in which to better understand immigrant women's increasingly diversified life trajectories and the range of barriers they encounter along the way. The study also reveals multiple opportunities for social work contributions: tackling systematic barriers to settlement, facilitating social support in the community, and recognizing individuals' diverse trajectory potentials (including the potential for this typically unwelcome event to be integrated as personal growth and transition). Prenatal exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (collectively as BTs) was associated with pregnancy complications. Identifying the metabolites associated with prenatal BTs exposure may help elucidate the mechanism and characterize the exposure risk. In this prospective study of 158 pregnant women from Wuhan, China, urinary BTs were repeatedly measured across three trimesters to provide an accurate estimation of exposure during pregnancy. We conducted high-throughput targeted metabolomics with great coverage and high accuracy to characterize the urinary metabolic profile in late pregnancy. We first identified the perturbed metabolites of cocktail BTs exposure and then pinned down to the pairwise associations between individual BTs and the identified metabolites. A total of 44 metabolites were identified as perturbed biomarkers of cocktail BTs exposure based on the variable influence on projection (VIP > 1.2) score. Further pairwise associations analysis showed positive association of BTs with oxidative stress related biomarkers and negative association of BTs with neuronal function metabolites. The shared metabolic signatures among BTs in the co-occurrence network of pairwise association analysis may partially be attributed to the correlation among cocktail BTs exposure. The findings provide the potential mechanisms of BTs-associated pregnancy complications and offer insight into the health implications for prenatal BTs exposure. Furthermore, the framework we employed, which integrates both cocktail exposure and individual exposure, may illuminate future epidemiological research that seeks to incorporate exposure to mixtures and omics scale data. This article offers a review of the emergent literature on 'vaccine nationalism' - the act of gaining preferential access to newly developed vaccines by individual countries - in the context of COVID-19, paying close attention to the complex relationships between the global public health crisis and globalization. The coexistence of nationalist and globalist approaches to COVID-19 vaccines suggests simultaneous and contentious processes of globalization and deglobalization; the growing political and economic divide in the world; the lack of (or lag in) our consciousness of global interconnectedness, especially in non-economic spheres; and various structural barriers to global collaboration when facing a common threat to humanity's future. Although these tensions - not necessarily novel - are unlikely to end globalization given the extant intertwining of global economic networks, they have been sharpened and intensified during the pandemic and, thus, constitute a pivotal - or make-or-break - moment for us to critically imagine a postpandemic world. In unsupervised learning, clustering is a common starting point for data processing. The convex or concave fusion clustering method is a novel approach that is more stable and accurate than traditional methods such as k-means and hierarchical clustering. However, the optimization algorithm used with this method can be slowed down significantly by the complexity of the fusion penalty, which increases the computational burden. This paper introduces a random projection ADMM algorithm based on the Bernoulli distribution and develops a double random projection ADMM method for high-dimensional fusion clustering. These new approaches significantly outperform the classical ADMM algorithm due to their ability to significantly increase computational speed by reducing complexity and improving clustering accuracy by using multiple random projections under a new evaluation criterion. Steroid hormones play a critical role in maintaining the homeostasis of human metabolism. Urine as a noninvasive sample has been extensively used in clinical diagnosis for hormones homeostasis. In this study, the simultaneous characterization of fourteen hormones in urine was performed based on ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPHLC/ESI(+)‐MS/MS) with multiple reaction monitoring in the positive ionization mode. The target hormones were cortisone, cortisol, 11‐deoxycortisol, aldosterone, corticosterone, 11‐deoxycorticosterone, progesterone, 17‐OH‐progesterone, pregnenolone, estrone, estradiol, estriol, testosterone and dehydreopiandrosterone. β‐Glucuronidase/sulfatase deconjugation and liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) were conducted for the determination of urinary hormones (free + conjugated forms). The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.2 ng/mL (11‐deoxycortisol and testosterone) to 1 ng/mL (cortisone). The extraction recovery of the targeted compounds ranged from 87% to 127%, indicating sufficient extraction efficiency for the LLE process. Intraday precision was below 10% and the accuracy ranged from 84% to 122%. The profiling analysis of hormones in urine samples helps to understand the metabolic state of biological systems and can be employed as a diagnostic tool in diseases developed by endocrine‐disrupted systems. Cardiac autophagy inhibitory factor (CAIF) is a novel lncRNA with protective effects on myocardial infarction. We explored the involvement of CAIF in end-stage cardiomyopathy. Patients with end-stage cardiomyopathy and healthy volunteers were included in this study. Myocardial tissues and serum were collected. CAIF was detected by RT-qPCR. ROC curve was used for diagnostic analysis. Prognostic value of CAIF expression for end-stage cardiomyopathy was evaluated by survival curve analysis. Correlations between CAIF expression and clinicopathological data of patients with end-stage cardiomyopathy were analysed by chi-square test. Downregulated CAIF was observed in end-stage cardiomyopathy patients than in healthy controls. CAIF expression distinguished end-stage cardiomyopathy patients from healthy controls and predict the survival of patients. LncRNA CAIF was downregulated in end-stage cardiomyopathy and may serve as a promising prognostic and diagnostic marker for this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Widespread exposure to parabens has been a concern, especially among pregnant women. Only one study reported that parabens are associated with glucose levels among pregnant women. However, studies on parabens exposure and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are lacking. Objectives This study investigated whether exposure to parabens in early pregnancy is related to GDM. Methods We conducted a prospective study of 1087 pregnant women from a single tertiary medical center between 2014 and 2015 in Wuhan, China. Parabens [methyl paraben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), butylparaben (BuP), and benzylparaben (BzP)] concentrations were measured in spot urine samples collected between 8 and 16 gestational weeks. GDM was diagnosed according to the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups Consensus Panel (IADPSG) recommendations. We used the Poisson regression with a robust error variance with generalized estimating equations (GEE) estimation analyses to evaluate associations between parabens exposure and GDM risk. Results A total of 103 (9.5%) women were diagnosed with GDM. We evaluated the associations of GDM risk with urinary MeP, EtP, and PrP (detection rate: >90%), but not with BuP and BzP due to the relatively low detection rate (<50%). After adjustment for potential confounders, urinary EtP was associated with GDM. The risk ratios (RRs) = 1.12 (95% CI: 0.63, 2.01) for the second quartile, RRs = 1.11 (95% CI: 0.64, 1.93) for the third quartile, and RRs = 1.70 (95% CI: 1.02, 2.82) for the highest quartile, compared with the lowest quartile. There was no evidence of associations between urinary MeP or PrP and GDM. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an association between urinary paraben levels in early pregnancy and GDM. Our findings suggest that exposure to EtP may increase the risk of GDM. Abstract Background Benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) are emerging contaminants with high production volume worldwide, which exhibit potential health risk to human. To date, little is known about the exposure of BTRs and BTHs (BTs) on human, especially in the context of pregnancy. Objectives We aimed to characterize the exposure profiles, temporal variability, and potential predictors of urinary BTs during pregnancy. Methods Between 2014 and 2015, we recruited 856 pregnant women in Wuhan who provided urine samples at three trimesters (13.1 ± 1.1, 23.7 ± 3.2, and 35.7 ± 3.4 gestational weeks). We measured the urinary concentrations of five BTRs (1‑H‑benzotriazole, 1‑hydroxy‑benzotriazole, xylyltriazole, tolyltriazole, 5‑chloro‑1‑H‑benzotriazole) and five BTHs (benzothiazole, 2‑hydroxy‑benzothiazole, 2‑methylthio‑benzothiazole, 2‑amino‑benzothiazole, 2‑thiocyanomethylthio‑benzothiazole) to characterize the exposure profiles of BTs. We calculated the intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) to assess the temporal variability and investigated potential predictors of urinary BTs by using the mixed models. Results Most of the targeted BTs were detected in over 50% of urine samples, except for 5‑chloro‑1‑H‑benzotriazole (9.3%) and 2‑thiocyanomethylthio-benzothiazole (1.4%). The predominant BTRs in urine was 1‑hydroxy‑benzotriazole [Geometric Mean (GM): 0.77 ng/mL]. Benzothiazole was the major derivative in urine samples with a GM concentration of 1.6 ng/mL. Correlations among BTHs (r = 0.04–0.39) were higher than that among BTRs (r = 0.02–0.14). The exposure pattern was constant at low level and co-exposure to all the targeted compounds was infrequent during pregnancy. Urinary concentrations of BTRs exhibited considerable within-subject variation (ICCs: 0.12–0.56) during pregnancy. Relatively high temporal reliability was observed for urinary concentrations of BTHs with ICCs ranging from 0.42 to 0.85. It was found that parity, household income, pregnancy occupational status, sampling season and menstrual cycle were associated with urinary concentrations of BTs in pregnant women (P < 0.05). Conclusions To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report the exposure profiles, variability and predictors of urinary BTs among pregnant women. Exposure assessment using multiple samples is essential in reducing measurement errors and identifying susceptible window of exposure in etiological studies. The potential predictors of urinary BTs raised concerns on tracing exposure routes and eliminating confounding variables in future studies. The COVID pandemic fueled by emerging SARS-CoV-2 new variants of concern remains a major global health concern, and the constantly emerging mutations present challenges to current therapeutics. The spike glycoprotein is not only essential for the initial viral entry, but is also responsible for the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 components via syncytia formation. Spike-mediated cell-cell transmission is strongly resistant to extracellular therapeutic and convalescent antibodies via an unknown mechanism. Here, we describe the antibody-mediated spike activation and syncytia formation on cells displaying the viral spike. We found that soluble antibodies against receptor binding motif (RBM) are capable of inducing the proteolytic processing of spike at both the S1/S2 and S2' cleavage sites, hence triggering ACE2-independent cell-cell fusion. Mechanistically, antibody-induced cell-cell fusion requires the shedding of S1 and exposure of the fusion peptide at the cell surface. By inhibiting S1/S2 proteolysis, we demonstrated that cell-cell fusion mediated by spike can be re-sensitized towards antibody neutralization in vitro. Lastly, we showed that cytopathic effect mediated by authentic SARS-CoV-2 infection remain unaffected by the addition of extracellular neutralization antibodies. Hence, these results unveil a novel mode of antibody evasion and provide insights for antibody selection and drug design strategies targeting the SARS-CoV-2 infected cells. Author summary: SARS-CoV-2 has been found to mediate breakthrough infections in vaccinated individuals and re-infections of convalescent patients, but the molecular mechanism of its immune escaping strategies remains elusive. Unlike virus-to-cell transmission, spike promotes SARS-CoV-2 cell-to-cell transmission, which is strongly resistant to extracellular antibodies and patient plasma. Here we show that receptor binding-motif antibodies mediate the ACE2-independent activation of spike at the cell plasma membrane. This mode of spike activation is enabled by the protease-mediated S1/S2 cleavage event and can be genetically and pharmacologically prevented. Through targeting the S1/S2 site, antibody neutralization against spike-mediated cell-cell fusion can be restored in various SARS-CoV-2 variants. We examined the prevalence of sex with older male partner (SWOMP) and its association with condomless anal intercourse (CAI) with male partners and unrecognized HIV infection among young men who have sex with men (MSM) in Shanghai, China. The analytic sample included 243 MSM who were 18-45 years and HIV negative or of unknown HIV serostatus. Older male partner refers to male sex partner who was at least 10 years older than themselves. Overall, 99 (43.0%) and 50 (20.7%) reported having SWOMP in lifetime and in the last 3 months, respectively. Having any CAI with male partners in the last 3 months was independently associated with SWOMP and sex with stable male partners in the last 3 months. Unrecognized HIV infection was independently associated with being HSV-2 positive and having any CAI with male partners as well as SWOMP in last 3 months. Sex with stable male partner in the last 3 months was also marginally significantly associated with unrecognized infection (p = 0.084). Older partner selection is common among young MSM in China. Prevention programs should incorporate education messages about the HIV risk associated with SWOMP. MSM should be informed that having condomless sex with stable partners may place them at HIV risk. In this paper, we introduce the notions of a --algebra and a 3-Lie 2-algebra. The former is a model for a 3-Lie algebra that satisfy the fundamental identity up to all higher homotopies, and the latter is the categorification of a 3-Lie algebra. We prove that the 2-category of 2-term --algebras is equivalent to the 2-category of 3-Lie 2-algebras. Skeletal and strict 3-Lie 2-algebras are studied in detail. An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses various reports within the issue on topics including identity and relationship in the accounts of Chinese immigrants to Canada; transnational experiences of Chinese immigrants; and intersection of masculinity and sexual practice.

In this paper we use narrative analysis to consider how the discursive resources that come with living ‘in between’ countries and cultures unfold in personal stories. We do this by presenting a close analysis of two transcripts drawn from a study about the vulnerability to HIV faced by Chinese immigrants to Canada. Our goal is to illustrate the application of narrative analysis and highlight the contributions it can make to conceptualising how transnationalism becomes consequential in accounts of intimate life. In narrative terms, transnationalism lends each life situation dual or multiple interpretive frameworks. Migrants from China to Canada situate their personal stories in relation to social and cultural norms and features of both nations. Yet, as our analysis makes apparent, ‘Canada’ and ‘China’ do not carry singular or consistent meanings in migrants’ stories. Attention to the role of stories in self-making allows us to better understand why transnational contexts appear as they do in narrative accounts, and responds to calls for more accurate mappings of the interface between transnationalism and the subject. Attention to how stories are ‘put together’ shows that transnational discursive resources are assembled in ways that bolster, and also undermine, entitlements to safe and equitable intimate relationships. Although immigrants’ sustained connections with their homelands are well documented, so far we know little about how ‘race’ – in particular, conceptions of race back home – influences the HIV vulnerability of racialised immigrants to Western countries. Drawing on data from a multi-sited, qualitative study of Chinese immigrants to Canada, this paper presents a contextualised understanding of the impacts of race on HIV risk faced by these individuals in a transnational context. Data were collected from four study sites in Canada and China as part of a study investigating the relationship between HIV risk and transnationalism. Although race appears to have bearing on their risk perceptions and sexual practices, immigrants’ understandings of race are not necessarily consistent with dominant discourses of race in Canada, but are also mediated by their racial habitus developed in China. Findings reveal the complex power dynamics – not just power asymmetries but also power fluidity – around race from a transnational perspective and thus challenge the assumed dichotomy of dominance and subordination underpinning traditional explanations of the relationship between race and HIV risk. In the context of transnationalism, researchers should go beyond a nation-bound concept of society (i.e. the host society) and take into account the simultaneous influence of both host and home countries on immigrant health. Explanations of immigrant health that ascribe to culture a fundamental causal role neglect the broader structural and contextual factors with which culture intersects. Based on a qualitative study of Indian immigrants’ vulnerability to HIV in Canada, this paper presents a contextualised understanding of these individuals’ understanding of, perceptions about, and responses to the HIV risk in their post-immigration lives. The study reveals that although culture – both traditional values and the norms of the diaspora community – appears to have constrained Indian immigrants’ capacities to respond to the risk, this effect can be properly understood only by situating such constraint in the context of the settlement process that has shaped participants’ living conditions, including their relationship with the diasporic community in Canada. We argue that HIV vulnerability should be conceptualised as a health inequality associated with broader systems of power relations (eg socio-economic marginalisation, gender inequality, discrimination, and racism). This more holistic conceptualisation of the intersection of culture, integration, and HIV vulnerability will facilitate exploration of HIV prevention strategies, through which interconnected inequalities of gender, race, and access to knowledge and resources can be challenged. The rapid global transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 raises questions about the intersections of globalization, time, and diseases. Viewing it as a disease of speed, this article examines SARS as a case of emerging infectious diseases in the context of contemporary globalization. We contend that the SARS crisis exposed the limitations of traditional spatiality-based approaches to infectious diseases, disease control, and health governance. When the advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) in recent decades have accelerated the diffusion of pathogens, actors at all levels of global public health are pressed to keep up with the new temporalities. While cognitive and organizational innovations arising from technological changes show some hope for addressing these issues on a global level, other temporality-related challenges—such as differential capacities of the affected countries to respond to the simultaneity of the crisis—are yet to be tackled. Starting from ethylenediamine as the center of the molecule, and terminated by the four peripheral imidazole rings, a dendric derivative with tetra-imidazoline (DDTI) was synthesized. The results of weight loss method showed the inhibition efficiency of DDTI could approximately reach up to 98.29% when the inhibitor dosage was 400 mg L. Meanwhile, referring to the potentiodynamic polarization test, DDTI could be classified as a mixed-type inhibitor. What's more, both electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) illustrated that the adsorption between the inhibitors and metal surface was the crucial reason for the high efficiency. Meanwhile, it is interesting that the compact, dendrimer-like and multilayer ed inhibitor films covering on the metal surface regularly acted as the main reason for prominent performance. Against the background of unprecedented international migration, it is not clear how people’s transnational mobility and ties have intersected with the temporalities associated with places or spaces. Drawing on the data from an empirical study of the caregiving experiences of Chinese grandparents in Canada, this case study reveals the simultaneous, yet uneven, temporal impacts of transnational care on individual, familial, and transnational levels. Although the coexistence of multiple temporalities enables Chinese skilled immigrant families to mobilize care resources across generations and nation-states, the dominance of the neoliberal temporal framework also means various consequences of such transnational ‘flexibility’. I argue that rethinking transnational care from a temporal perspective helps us identify the linkages, discrepancies and contradictions between ‘global time’ and peripheral temporalities and between time and space, and thus makes visible the inequalities – in particular, the temporal inequalities – embedded in human migration and social relations on a transnational scale. Many studies have shown that aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) can cause cytotoxicity in numerous cells and organs induced by oxidative stress. However, the toxic effects and related mechanism of AFB1 on the microglia cells in the spinal cords have not been studied yet. Our results showed that AFB1 significantly reduced the number of microglia cells, increased the oxidants (malonaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide) but decreased the anti-oxidants (superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity) in a dose dependent manner in mice spinal cords. In addition, AFB1 significantly increased the oxidative stress, promoted apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in G2-M phase, and activated NF-κB phosphorylation in BV2 microglia cells. However, the addition of active oxygen scavenger N-acetylcysteine can significantly reduce the ROS production, improve cell cycle arrest, reduce apoptosis, and the expression of phosphorylated NF-κB in BV2 microglia cells. These results indicate that AFB1 induces microglia cells apoptosis through oxidative stress by activating NF-κB signaling pathway. In this paper, first we introduce the notions of relative Rota-Baxter operators of nonzero weight on 3-Lie algebras and 3-post-Lie algebras. A 3-post-Lie algebra consists of a 3-Lie algebra structure and a ternary operation such that some compatibility conditions are satisfied. We show that a relative Rota-Baxter operator of nonzero weight induces a 3-post-Lie algebra naturally. Conversely, a 3-post-Lie algebra gives rise to a new 3-Lie algebra, which is called the subadjacent 3-Lie algebra, and an action on the original 3-Lie algebra. Then we construct an L ∞ -algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements are relative Rota-Baxter operators of nonzero weight. Consequently, we obtain the twisted L ∞ -algebra that controls deformations of a given relative Rota-Baxter operator of nonzero weight on 3-Lie algebras. Finally, we introduce a cohomology theory for a relative Rota-Baxter operator of nonzero weight on 3-Lie algebras and use the second cohomology group to classify infinitesimal deformations. The intersections of international migration, care and welfare states have attracted increasing attention from social policy scholars, yet the focus on the commodification of care has led them largely to ignore kin-based unpaid care. Based on a study of Chinese grandparents’ caregiving experiences in Canada, this article shows how transnational families of Chinese skilled immigrants have participated in redistributing care resources, including emotion, time and cultural knowledge, across generations and countries. The article argues that states – in particular, the government of Canada as the host country – still have a crucial role to play in untangling the contradictions of immigration and care and addressing the inequalities embedded in transnational caregiving. To pursue global social justice, social policy makers need to take into account policy effects that go beyond the nation-state and its citizenry and intersect with such aspects of immigration as the spatial reconfiguration of the family, cultural change and ageing. In order to construct a unified permeability prediction model for multi-stage tight gas sandstones with permeability across 6 orders of magnitude and changeable porosity-permeability relationship, Bayesian regularization neural network is properly configured with core porosity, conventional logs and a few derivates of them as input items. Abstract: Critical gerontology views aging as a social construction that reflects the intersections of micro-processes with the macro-level forces of individual aging experiences. In the contexts of immigration and transnationalism, however, the macro-structural conditions, dynamics and experiences of aging have become further diversified and complicated. The dearth of empirical and explanatory knowledge in this area has inhibited us from comprehending aging in a changing world. Drawing on data from a study of Chinese grandparents'' experiences of transnational caregiving in Canada, this article examines the impacts of such experiences on three interconnected dimensions – spatial, temporal and cognitive – of aging. Although the practice of transnational caregiving allows skilled immigrant families to mobilize care resources outside Canada, it has not only ruptured the traditional trajectories of aging for their elderly parents, but also complicated the inequalities that they have to bear on individual, familial and transnational levels. I argue that the critical examination of aging in the context of transnational caregiving helps us take into consideration those dimensions (such as place, space, time, and knowledge) that are changed by immigration processes, and rethink aging from a broader perspective that links seniors'' experiences with their relationship with their adult immigrant children''s families and macro-structures outside national borders. Based on a qualitative study of lived experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS in China, this article explores the role of time -- in particular , time as lived (or , perceptual time) -- in these individuals' construction and reconstruction of the meanings of their illness experiences. Although their HIV infection interrupted the linear low of time, the end of which is death, they had reconstructed the meanings of time according to their priorities in the process of living with this disease. Making sense of time beyond a linear time framework benefited these individuals by enabling them to restore their control over their lives and transform a process of deteriorating and dying into a process of living and growing. It is concluded that time, as a distinct form of illness experience, merits further examination in future AIDS research as well as in health research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social discrimination and limited health care resources drive many people living with HIV/AIDS in China to seek help from their own families. This paper, which is based on a qualitative study of the experiences of this population, examines how the notion of family obligation has influenced how these individuals organise various aspects of their daily lives. Viewing family obligation as a matter of reciprocal relationships, a closer look is taken at the ways in which these individuals exercise their autonomy to fulfil those obligations and pursue their moral self despite their health status. Despite the rapid increase of HIV infection cases in China, the majority of this population have not yet accessed AIDS-related healthcare services. Most current research in China focuses on HIV prevention and disease control, and pays inadequate attention to the barriers facing HIV-infected individuals in accessing and adhering with healthcare services. This article, as part of a research project on the illness experiences of people with HIV/AIDS in China, aimed to explore these individuals’ healthcare experiences, shedding light on the gaps between their needs and existing healthcare services. Data for this qualitative study were collected through individual in-depth interviews with 21 HIV-infected adults in China. The results of data analysis suggest that these individuals’ healthcare experiences were greatly affected by social discrimination and the limitations of healthcare resources. While AIDS stigma has reduced the social resources available for this population, HIV-related health institutions were perceived by them as an indispensable source of social support. It is concluded that healthcare institutions, as one of the few places in which HIV-infected people are willing to disclose their HIV positive status, should incorporate social care into healthcare service development and delivery so as to facilitate this population's accessing healthcare services and to address their unmet needs that go beyond the conventional scope of health care. Improving the visibility of people with HIV/AIDS in health care will also have a long-term impact on their own well-being and on HIV prevention in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Women in China are increasingly affected by HIV/AIDS. Current AIDS studies have examined the HIV risks faced by this gender group, paying inadequate attention to women's actual experiences with the disease. This oversight has inhibited our ability to understand the impact of gender on women's capacity to respond to HIV/AIDS in their postinfection lives. Based on a qualitative study on illness experiences of HIV-infected people, this article examines the interactions between HIV/AIDS and gender roles in the Chinese context. It was found that traditional gender norms have played a key role for HIV-infected women in their efforts to tackle this disease and to make sense of their daily lives. HIV infection has created a conflict between women's intention to fulfill their conception of "womanhood" and a decreased ability to do so, which, in turn, has adversely affected their self-perceptions and well-being. To avoid worsening the inequality women experience, therefore, we must also work on the socioeconomic conditions, for example, through delivering comprehensive care to affected families and developing a gender-sensitive welfare policy, so that the gender imparity that permeates this epidemic can be challenged and transformed. Abstract: Recent AIDS research has documented the widespread discrimination toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in China. General ignorance and misconceptions about this disease have been identified as the two primary reasons for this prejudice. Yet, little attention has been paid to social constructions of HIV/AIDS in the Chinese context and to the processes by which such constructions are experienced, understood, reacted to, and, perhaps, reconstructed through social and interpersonal interactions. Based on a qualitative study of Chinese PLWHA''s illness experiences, this paper explores how HIV/AIDS, as a social construct, is understood by these individuals in the context of their daily encounters. It is discovered that, despite their knowledge of HIV/AIDS, PLWHA''s perceptions about and responses to this disease are greatly influenced by their experiences of interacting with others (e.g., their families, friends, and health workers). The conflicts between individuals’ mastery of knowledge pertaining to, and their overreactions in practice toward, HIV-infected bodies suggest that AIDS education should not be limited to the dissemination of knowledge per se, but that the interpersonal or interactive dimensions of discrimination and efforts to combat it must also be taken into account. The HIV epidemic has had major impact on men who have sex with men in China. Most current studies view male-to-male sex as a behavioural dimension or variable affecting HIV infection, paying little attention to the socio-cultural meanings of homosexuality and their impacts on men's experiences with HIV/AIDS. This oversight has impeded understanding of the health practices of this population. Based on a qualitative study of experiences of Chinese people living with HIV/AIDS, this paper explores the complex processes in which men who have sex with men struggle and negotiate with their sexuality, family obligations, and this disease. To facilitate Chinese men who have sex with men in responding effectively to HIV and AIDS, researchers and practitioners should take into account a wide range of contextual factors including desired gender roles, family obligations, homophobia, and HIV-related stigma that contribute to current constructions of 'homosexuality' in China. Abstract: Fungiform papillae are epithelial specializations that develop in a linear pattern on the anterior mammalian tongue and differentiate to eventually contain taste buds. Little is known about morphogenetic and pattern regulation of these crucial taste organs. We used embryonic rat tongue, organ cultures to test roles for bone morphogenetic proteins, BMP2, 4 and 7, and antagonists noggin and follistatin, in development of papillae from a stage before morphological initiation (E13) or from a stage after the pre-papilla placodes have formed (E14). BMPs and noggin proteins become progressively restricted to papilla locations during tongue development. In E13 cultures, exogenous BMPs or noggin induce increased numbers of fungiform papillae, in a concentration-dependent manner, compared to standard tongue cultures; BMPs, but not noggin, lead to a decreased tongue size at this stage. In E14 cultures, however, exogenous BMP2, 4 or 7 each inhibits papilla formation so that there is a decrease in papilla number. Noggin substantially increases number of papillae in E14 cultures. Using beads for a highly localized protein delivery, papillae are inhibited in the surround of BMP-soaked beads and induced in large clusters around noggin-soaked beads. Follistatin, presented in culture medium or by bead, does not alter papilla formation or number. In all fungiform papillae that form under various culture conditions, the molecular marker, sonic hedgehog, is within each papilla. However, the BMP inhibitory effect on papillae is not prevented by disrupting sonic hedgehog signaling through addition of cyclopamine to cultures. BMPs and noggin alter cell proliferation in tongue epithelium in opposite ways, demonstrated with Ki67 immunostaining. We propose that the BMPs and noggin, colocalized within papilla placodes and the fungiform papillae per se, have opposing inhibitory and activating or inducing roles in papilla development in linear patterns. This article focuses on a study related to investigating the expression of interleukin-18 receptor, a chain in BAL and peripheral blood T cells in patients with sarcoidosis compared with control subjects, to evaluate the relationship between the expression and clinical manifestations, and to clarify the mechanisms of altered expression. The current consensus regarding the pathogenesis of sarcoidosis is that it results from exposure of genetically susceptible hosts to particular environmental factors. Accumulated evidence indicates that the immunologic changes associated with pulmonary sarcoidosis are characterized by the expanded pool of CD4+ T cells and activated monocyte/macrophage lineage cells.

Recent research has documented silence/reticence among East-Asian international students, including Chinese students, in Western/English classrooms. Students’ communication competence and cultural differences from the mainstream Euro-American society have been identified as two primary barriers to participation. Placing emphasis on individual characteristics of Chinese students, however, without considering aspects of the educational context with which those characteristics interact, may over-simplify and distort the mechanism underlying their silence in the classroom. Based on a qualitative study of Chinese students’ experience of sharing indigenous knowledge in classroom settings of Canadian academic institutions, it is argued that the pursuit of diversity in the classroom may be compromised by classroom interactions, through which, for instance, the dynamics and quality of the knowledge exchange of students from different socio-cultural backgrounds may be adversely affected. Within this conceptual framework, the concepts ‘silence’, ‘culture difference’ and ‘indigenous knowledge’ are re-examined; the concepts ‘reciprocal cultural familiarity’ and ‘inclusive knowledge sharing’ are advocated. ... Personalized medicine has gained much attention in the past decades, and identifying the effects of factors is essential for personalized preventions and treatments. Hypertension is a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is influenced by complex factors. In order to decrease the incidence of hypertension effectively, the subjects should be divided into subgroups according to their characteristics. In this study, we proposed to use a heterogeneous logistic regression combined with a concave fusion penalty to analyze the population-based survey data, including common influencing factors of hypertension. The analytic steps include: (1) identifying the most important predictor; (2) estimating subgroup-based heterogeneous effects. In the present context of primary hypertension data, the modeling results showed that the calculated prediction accuracy under our method was greater than 99%, while zero under the classical logistic regression. Permeability estimates from well logs are essential inputs for reservoir characterization and of great significance to almost all aspects of hydrocarbon development. Borehole image, with high resolution and coverage to highlight subtle heterogeneity of formation, is rarely used for permeability estimation, especially for clastic rocks. Here, we put forward a set of algorithms to automatically extract sand resistivity from microresistivity borehole image to effectively indicate and estimate the intrinsic permeability of porous clastic rocks, and then apply it to the tight sandstone reservoir of Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in Qiulin gas field, central Sichuan Basin. First, equations are deduced, according to the measurement principle and combined with shallow lateral log, to scale borehole image data into resistivity or conductivity depth by depth. Then, based on the volume model and the parallel conductance theory, sand resistivity component R s d is separated from the scaled borehole image by sliding statistics and partitioning with cutoffs equal to the shale volume properly calculated from conventional logs. Subsequently, exponential functions, derived from significant negative correlations between R s d and core permeability K _ c o r e in double logarithmic coordinate, are used to estimate formation permeability. With their correlation coefficients between 0.617 and 0.861, the resultant K_est curves coincide better with subtle variations of K _ c o r e than those estimations derived from conventional logs. • Prenatal exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles were measured in urine samples collected across three trimesters. • Repeated ultrasound measurements of fetal size in combination with birth size were used to characterize fetal growth. • We investigated the associations of prenatal exposure to benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles with fetal and birth size. • We observed sex-specific associations and further explored the window of susceptibility. The presence of benzotriazoles and benzothiazoles (BTs) in maternal urine and amniotic fluid indicated the widespread fetal exposure to the contaminants. We investigated the associations of prenatal BTs exposure with fetal and birth size and explored the window of susceptibility. Participants consisted of 856 mother-infant pairs drawn from a prospective birth cohort between 2014 and 2015 in Wuhan, China. Prenatal BTs exposure were measured in multiple urine samples collected across three trimesters. We observed positive associations between prenatal exposure to specific BTs (e.g., 1-H-benzotriazole, 1-hydroxy-benzotriazole and 2-amino-benzothiazole) and femur length (FL) and birth length z-scores among girls. In boys, a 2-fold increase of averaged concentration of urinary benzothiazole (BTH) was associated with decrement in FL (β = -0.068, p < 0.001) and birth length (β = -0.055, p = 0.005) z-scores. Further analysis indicated that the negative associations between urinary concentrations of BTH and birth length z-score among boys were observed at exposure measurement in 25–35 gestational weeks. This study reported the associations between prenatal exposure to BTs and fetal and birth size, suggests the associations maybe in a sex-specific manner and the window of exposure may influence susceptibility. Mitochondria are sensitive to environmental toxicants due to the limited repair capacity. Exposure to benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) may contribute to adverse health outcomes through oxidative stress, which may interfere with mitochondrial function. However, the mitochondrial effects of exposure to BTs (BTRs and BTHs) have not yet been elucidated, particularly in human investigations. We examined the associations between trimester-specific urinary BTRs and BTHs concentrations and cord blood mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) in a prospective birth cohort. The present study included 742 mother-infant pairs who participated in a birth cohort between 2014 and 2015 in Wuhan and had data on urinary concentrations of BTRs and BTHs and mtDNAcn in cord blood. Concentrations of BTs were repeatedly measured in maternal urine samples at different trimesters using high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Relative mtDNAcn in umbilical cord blood was analyzed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Generalized estimating equations were used to evaluate the associations between BTs exposure across gestation and mtDNAcn in cord blood. In the present study, we observed a positive association between urinary 2-methylthio-benzothiazole (2-MeS-BTH) concentrations in the first trimester and cord blood mtDNAcn, with marginal significance [percent changes (%Δ) = 3.97, 95% confidence interval (CI): −0.05, 8.16, p = 0.05], while urinary 2-amino-benzothiazole concentrations in the third trimester were significantly negatively associated with cord blood mtDNAcn (%Δ = −5.89, 95% CI: −10.32, −1.24). Similar patterns of associations were demonstrated between urinary 1-H-benzotriazole (1-H-BTR) and xylyltriazole concentrations in the third trimester and cord blood mtDNAcn (%Δ = −4.18 to −3.23). In sex-specific analysis, we identified that maternal urinary 1-H-BTR in the first trimester and 2-MeS-BTH in the third trimester were positively associated with cord blood mtDNAcn among male infants but not female (P for interaction = 0.05 for 1-H-BTR, P for interaction = 0.05 for 2-MeS-BTH, respectively). We found evidence that prenatal exposure to BTRs and BTHs were associated with cord blood mtDNAcn alternation, and these associations were modified by infant gender. In this paper, first we give the notion of a compatible 3-Lie algebra and construct a bidifferential graded Lie algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements are compatible 3-Lie algebras. We also obtain the bidifferential graded Lie algebra that governs deformations of a compatible 3-Lie algebra. Then we introduce a cohomology theory of a compatible 3-Lie algebra with coefficients in itself and show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between equivalent classes of infinitesimal deformations of a compatible 3-Lie algebra and the second cohomology group. We further study 2-order 1-parameter deformations of a compatible 3-Lie algebra and introduce the notion of a Nijenhuis operator on a compatible 3-Lie algebra, which could give rise to a trivial deformation. At last, we introduce a cohomology theory of a compatible 3-Lie algebra with coefficients in arbitrary representation and classify abelian extensions of a compatible 3-Lie algebra using the second cohomology group. Benzotriazoles (BTRs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) are emerging contaminants with potential insulin modulation activities. Pregnancy exposure to BTs (BTRs and BTHs) may be a risk factor for the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, epidemiological studies are limited. We prospectively investigated the associations of exposure to BTs at early pregnancy with the blood glucose levels and the risks of GDM. A prospective cohort of 1770 pregnant women who were free of diabetes at baseline was established between 2013 and 2015 in Wuhan, China. Urine samples collected at 13.1 ± 1.1 weeks of gestation were analyzed to estimate the exposure level of BTs. The diagnosis of GDM was based on a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) conducted at 26.4 ± 2.4 weeks of gestation. We examined the associations between urinary concentration of BTs and blood glucose levels by linear regression models. The associations of urinary BTs concentrations with the relative risk (RR) of GDM were evaluated by generalized estimating equations with Poisson regression. Effect modifications by fetus sex and pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) were further evaluated in the sensitivity analysis. Results: A total of 147 (8.31%) pregnant women were diagnosed with GDM. Median concentrations of urinary BTs did not differ significantly between pregnant women with and without GDM. It was found that urinary levels of benzothiazole and 2-hydroxy-benzothiazole (2-OH-BTH) were positively associated with 2-hour blood glucose (p for trend < 0.050). Comparing the high exposure group with the low exposure group of 2-OH-BTH, the adjusted RR of GDM was 1.79 (95% CI = 1.18 to 2.69, p for trend = 0.012). Sensitivity analysis indicated that the positive association of the urinary 2-OH-BTH level with the RR of GDM remained significant among pregnant women who had a male fetus (RR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.02 to 3.03, p for trend = 0.041) and those with a normal pre-pregnancy BMI (RR = 1.85, 95% CI = 1.09 to 3.11, p for trend = 0.034). These findings suggested that higher urinary level of 2-OH-BTH in early pregnancy was associated with impaired glucose homeostasis and the increased risk of GDM. Background: The sequencing platform BGISEQ-500 is based on DNBSEQ technology and provides high throughput with low costs. This sequencer has been widely used in various areas of scientific and clinical research. A better understanding of the sequencing process and performance of this system is essential for stabilizing the sequencing process, accurately interpreting sequencing results and efficiently solving sequencing problems. To address these concerns, a comprehensive database, SEQdata-BEACON, was constructed to accumulate the run performance data in BGISEQ-500. Results: A total of 60 BGISEQ-500 instruments in the BGI-Wuhan lab were used to collect sequencing performance data. Lanes in paired-end 100 (PE100) sequencing using 10 bp barcode were chosen, and each lane was assigned a unique entry number as its identification number (ID). From November 2018 to April 2019, 2236 entries were recorded in the database containing 65 metrics about sample, yield, quality, machine state and supplies information. Using a correlation matrix, 52 numerical metrics were clustered into three groups signifying yield-quality, machine state and sequencing calibration. The distributions of the metrics also delivered information about patterns and rendered clues for further explanation or analysis of the sequencing process. Using the data of a total of 200 cycles, a linear regression model well simulated the final outputs. Moreover, the predicted final yield could be provided in the 15th cycle of the early stage of sequencing, and the corresponding R2 of the 200th and 15th cycle models were 0.97 and 0.81, respectively. The model was run with the test sets obtained from May 2019 to predict the yield, which resulted in an R2 of 0.96. These results indicate that our simulation model was reliable and effective. Conclusions: Data sources, statistical findings and application tools provide a constantly updated reference for BGISEQ-500 users to comprehensively understand DNBSEQ technology, solve sequencing problems and optimize run performance. Purpose: Individuals with vitamin D (VD) insufficiency have a greater tendency to develop obesity and have increased systemic inflammation. Gut microbiota are involved in the regulation of host inflammation and energy metabolism, which plays a role in the pathogenesis of obesity. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effects of different doses of VD3 on body weight, serum lipids, inflammatory factors, and intestinal barrier function in obese mice and to explore the regulatory effect of VD3 on gut microbiota in obese mice. Methods: Male C57BL/6 J mice received a normal chow diet (NCD, 10% fat) or high-fat diet (HFD, 60% fat) to induce obesity within 10 weeks. Then, HFD mice were supplemented with 5650, 8475, or 11,300 IU VD3/kg diet for 8 weeks. Finally, 16 s rRNA analysis was performed to analyze gut microbiota composition in cecal contents. In addition, body weight, serum lipids, inflammatory factors, and intestinal barrier function were analyzed. Results: VD3 supplementation reduced body weight and the levels of TG, TC, HDL-C, TNF-α, IL-1β and LPS, and increased ZO-1 in HFD-fed mice. Moreover, it increased α-diversity, reduced F/B ratio and altered microbiota composition by increasing relative abundance of Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Desulfovibrio, Dehalobacterium, Odoribacter, and Parabacteroides and reducing relative abundance of Firmicutes and Ruminococcus. There were significant differences between HFD and NCD groups in several metabolic pathways, including endotoxin biosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, lipid synthesis and metabolism, and glycolysis. Conclusions: Low, medium, and high doses of VD3 inhibited weight gain, reduced levels of blood lipids and inflammatory factors, and improved endotoxemia and gut barrier function in obese mice. It also increased the α-diversity of gut microbiota in obese mice and reduced the relative abundance of some intestinal pathogenic bacteria, increased the relative abundance of some beneficial bacteria, and corrected the intestinal flora disorder of obese mice, with the low- and high-dose groups showing better effects than the medium-dose group. Rationale: Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are ubiquitous antimicrobial agents incorporated in consumer and personal care products. Due to their human health risks, it is essential to develop a sensitive and accurate analytical method to simultaneously quantify TCS, TCC, as well as their metabolites and byproducts in urine and serum samples. Methods: The quantitative parameters of TCS, TCC, TCC metabolites and byproducts (2'‐OH‐TCC, 3'‐OH‐TCC, 6‐OH‐TCC, DHC, DCC, NCC) were optimized by using ultra‐high‐performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/ESI‐MS/MS). Enzymatic hydrolysis of the samples was optimized based on enzyme dosage and incubation time. The efficiencies of solid‐phase extraction (SPE) and liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) were compared. The effectiveness of the established method was evaluated, and method application was validated using real urine and serum samples. Results: The conjugates were sufficiently hydrolyzed under 500 U/mL β‐glucuronidase and 80 U/mL sulfatase at 37°C for 4 h. Compared with the LLE method, SPE achieved higher extraction efficiency in both urine and serum samples. The optimized SPE‐UHPLC/ESI‐MS/MS method showed low limits of detection (LODs) in the range 0.001–0.3 ng/mL and good linearity (R2 > 0.99) at 0.01–150 ng/mL in both matrices. Excellent recoveries of 82.0%–120.7% (urine) and 76.7%–113.9% (serum) were obtained with low relative standard deviation (RSD, <7.6%) for inter‐day and intra‐day injections. This method was applicable to quantify target compounds in multiple biological urine and serum samples. Notably, TCS and TCC were detected with average concentrations of 8.37 and 10.46 ng/mL, respectively, in 15 Chinese female urine samples, with the simultaneous detection of TCC metabolites and byproducts. Conclusions: A reliable method was established to simultaneously determine TCS, TCC, TCC metabolites and byproducts in urine and serum samples by using UHPLC/ESI‐MS/MS. In this paper, we introduce the cohomology theory of relative Rota–Baxter operators on Leibniz algebras. We use the cohomological approach to study linear and formal deformations of relative Rota–Baxter operators. In particular, the notion of Nijenhuis elements is introduced to characterize trivial linear deformations. 1,4,5,6,7,8-Hexahydropyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidine (PPM) promotes apoptosis of HepG2 cells and serves a role in tumor suppression. However, the role of microRNA (miRNA) regulation in initiating apoptosis remains unclear. Therefore, the present study performed reverse transcription-quantitative PCR to investigate the association between PPM and miRNA, which demonstrated that PPM upregulated the expression of miR-26b-5p. Wound healing and Transwell assays showed that PPM inhibited the migration and invasion of HepG2 cells, and EdU staining experiments showed that PPM inhibited the proliferation of HepG2 cells. Transfection with miR-26b-5p inhibitor reversed the effects of PPM on HepG2 cells. Flow cytometry results showed that PPM promoted apoptosis of HepG2 cells by upregulating miRNA (miR)-26b-5p, and Western blotting results showed that PPM promoted the expression of apoptosis-associated protein Bax and inhibited the expression of Bcl-2 by upregulating miR-26b-5p. Using a proteomic approach combined with bioinformatics analysis, CDK8 was identified as a potential target of miR-26b-5p and was downregulated by miR-26b-5p overexpression. However, PPM induced HepG2 cell cycle arrest without the involvement of miR-26b-5p. Western blotting results showed that PPM upregulation of miR-26b-5p suppresses NF-κB/p65 signaling pathway in HepG2 cells by targeting of CDK8. Benzotriazole (BTR) and benzothiazole (BTH) derivatives are extensively applied in industrial processes and consumer products, and are thus frequently detected in the environmental matrices. Due to their potential estrogenic effects reported in animal studies, the assessment of human exposure to BTRs and BTHs is important. In this study, a method was developed and validated to determine six BTRs and five BTHs in human urine by using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-TQMS) in positive electrospray ionization mode. After de-conjugation by β -glucuronidase, urine samples were liquid-liquid extracted for the measurement of total concentrations of BTRs and BTHs. The linearity, detection limit, precision, recovery, accuracy and matrix effect were evaluated. The limits of detection were less than 0.5 ng/mL. The validated method demonstrated good precision (RSD% < 15%), linearity (R 2 > 0.99), recovery (>80%) and accuracy (80–100%). The method was successfully applied for the analysis of 22 human urine samples. Four out of eleven targeted compounds were detected in more than half of participants at ng/mL levels. Background: China's population is quickly aging and this trend is expected to continue. Thus it is important to develop HIV interventions to help protect older Chinese from infection. Limited information exists regarding sexual risk behaviors and associated personal motivations among persons aged 50 and over in China.Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 HIV-infected and 14 uninfected men aged 50 and over in Shanghai, China.Results: More than 71% of heterosexual participants had engaged in commercial sex, 37.5% either had engaged in casual sex or had a steady extramarital partner. All gay/bisexual participants had engaged in casual sex with men, and 16.7% had engaged in commercial sex. Personal motivations associated with sexual risk behaviors included sexual desire and interest in sex remaining high at an older age, unfulfilled sexual desires within marriage, homosexual or bisexual orientation, need to socialize with others, peer influence, personal choice of "hobby", and financial freedom.Conclusions: This study sheds light on the sexual needs of older people. Our findings underscore the need for both greater education in order to reshape societal perceptions of sexuality among older adults and prevention strategies to help the older male population maintain a healthy sexual life.
