Resource use is crucial for the sustainable growth of energy and green low-carbon applications since the improper handling of biomass waste would have a detrimental effect on the environment. This paper used nano-ZnO and ammonium persulfate ((NH4)2S2O8, APS) as a template agent and heteroatom dopant, respectively. Using a one-step carbonization process in an inert atmosphere, the biomass waste furfural residue (FR) was converted into porous carbon (PC), which was applied to the supercapacitor electrode. The impact of varying APS ratios and carbonization temperatures on the physicochemical properties and electrochemical properties of PC was studied. O, S, and N atoms were evenly distributed in the carbon skeleton, producing abundant heteroatomic functional groups. The sample with the largest specific surface area (SSA, 855.62 m2 g−1) was made at 900 °C without the addition of APS. With the increase in adding the ratio of APS, the SSA and pore volume of the sample were reduced, owing to the combination of APS and ZnO to form ZnS during the carbonization process, which inhibited the pore generation and activation effect of ZnO and damaged the pore structure of PC. At 0.5 A g−1 current density, PC900-1 (FR: ZnO: APS ratio 1:1:1, prepared at 900 °C) exhibited the maximum specific capacitance of 153.03 F g−1, whereas it had limited capacitance retention at high current density. PC900-0.1 displayed high specific capacitance (141.32 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1), capacitance retention (80.7%), low equivalent series resistance (0.306 Ω), and charge transfer resistance (0.145 Ω) and showed good rate and energy characteristics depending on the synergistic effect of the double layer capacitance and pseudo-capacitance. In conclusion, the prepared FR-derived PC can meet the application of a supercapacitor energy storage field and realize the resource and functional utilization of biomass, which has a good application prospect. Motor dysfunction of the upper limbs following a stroke predominantly arises from abnormal motor patterning caused by the disrupted balance of inter-cortical communication within motor-associated cortical regions. Temporal analysis offers a more precise reflection of the cortical functional state in affected patients. This study employed fNIRS to capture hemodynamic responses among 20 stroke patients and 19 healthy controls in both resting and Baduanjin task state. Including computing the coefficient of variation of fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) for each channel, alongside extracting dynamic state metrics. Findings indicate that, during sustained motor tasks, stroke patients exhibit a diminished fALFF variability in targeted cortical regions; these individuals display a higher prevalence of low-intensity states and a lower prevalence of high-intensity states during task execution. These dynamic state attributes are significantly associated with scores on the upper limb motor function scale (FMA-UE), thereby proposing a time-domain perspective for investigating the underlying mechanisms of stroke-induced motor dysfunction., (© 2025 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Objective: This study aimed to explore the impact of exercise training modes on sensory and motor-related cortex excitability using functional near-infrared spectroscopy technology (fNIRS) and reveal specific cortical effects., Materials and Methods: Twenty participants with no known health conditions took part in a study involving passive, active, and resistance tasks facilitated by an upper-limb robot, using a block design. The participants wore functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) devices throughout the experiment to monitor changes in cortical blood oxygen levels during the tasks. The fNIRS optode coverage primarily targeted key areas of the brain cortex, including the primary motor cortex (M1), primary somatosensory cortex (S1), supplementary motor area (SMA), and premotor cortex (PMC) on both hemispheres. The study evaluated cortical activation areas, intensity, and lateralization values., Results: Passive movement primarily activates M1 and part of S1, while active movement mainly activates contralateral M1 and S1. Resistance training activates brain regions in both hemispheres, including contralateral M1, S1, SMA, and PMC, as well as ipsilateral M1, S1, SMA, and PMC. Resistance movement also activates the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex (S1, SMA, PMC) more than active or passive movement. Active movement has higher contralateral activation in M1 compared to passive movement. Resistance and active movements increase brain activity more than passive movement. Different movements activate various cortical areas equally on both sides, but lateralization differs. The correlation between lateralization of brain regions is significant in the right cortex but not in the left cortex during three movement patterns., Conclusion: All types of exercise boost motor cortex excitability, but resistance exercise activates both sides of the motor cortex more extensively. The PMC is crucial for intense workouts. Background: Non-invasive neuroregulation techniques have been demonstrated to improve certain motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the currently employed regulatory techniques primarily concentrate on stimulating single target points, neglecting the functional regulation of networks and circuits. The supplementary motor area (SMA) has a significant value in motor control, and its functionality is often impaired in patients with PD. The matching SMA-primary motor cortex (M1) paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment protocol, which benefits patients by modulating the sequential and functional connections between the SMA and M1, was elucidated in this study., Methods: This was a single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial. We recruited 78 subjects and allocated them in a 1:1 ratio by stratified randomization into the paired stimulation ( n  = 39) and conventional stimulation groups ( n  = 39). Each patient underwent 3 weeks of matching SMA-M1 paired TMS or sham-paired stimulation. The subjects were evaluated before treatment initiation, 3 weeks into the intervention, and 3 months after the cessation of therapy. The primary outcome measure in this study was the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale III, and the secondary outcome measures included non-motor functional assessment, quality of life (Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39), and objective assessments (electromyography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy)., Discussion: Clinical protocols aimed at single targets using non-invasive neuroregulation techniques often improve only one function. Emphasizing the circuit and network regulation in PD is important for enhancing the effectiveness of TMS rehabilitation. Pairing the regulation of cortical circuits may be a potential treatment method for PD. As a crucial node in motor control, the SMA has direct fiber connections with basal ganglia circuits and complex fiber connections with M1, which are responsible for motor execution. SMA regulation may indirectly regulate the function of basal ganglia circuits. Therefore, the developed cortical pairing stimulation pattern can reshape the control of information flow from the SMA to M1. The novel neuroregulation model designed for this study is based on the circuit mechanisms of PD and previous research results, with a scientific foundation and the potential to be a means of neuroregulation for PD. Background: Stroke survivors often face challenges in motor learning and motivation during rehabilitation, which can impede their recovery progress. Traditional rehabilitation methods vary in effectiveness, prompting the exploration of novel approaches such as reward strategies. Previous research indicates that rewards can enhance rehabilitation motivation and facilitate motor learning. However, most reward paradigms have utilized fixed reward amounts, which also have limitations. Exploring alternative, more effective reward strategies, such as probabilistic rewards, is warranted to optimize stroke patient rehabilitation., Methods: A total of 81 stroke patients will be recruited and randomly assigned to control, fixed reward, or probabilistic reward groups at a ratio of 1:1:1 using a randomized number table method. Participants will undergo 10 days of daily hand motor function rehabilitation training, with sessions lasting 20 min each. The training will involve pegboard tests and box and block tests. Control group participants will receive standard training, while fixed reward group members will receive monetary incentives for completing tests, and probabilistic reward group members will have the chance to win monetary rewards through a lottery box. Rehabilitation motivation and motor performance and functional near-infrared spectroscopy brain imaging will be conducted at designated time points. The primary outcome measure is the stroke rehabilitation motivation scale, and the second outcome measures include motor performance, simple test for evaluating hand function, motivation and pleasure scale self-report, and Pittsburgh rehabilitation participation scale., Discussion: Reward-based training enhance rehabilitation participation and adherence, it also improve motor learning speed and memory retention of stroke patients. The fixed reward applied in the past studies could diminish the sensitivity of stroke patients to rewards, while probabilistic reward may provide unpredictable or variable incentives or reinforcements for motor rehabilitation. This study will compare the efficacy of different reward strategies in enhancing motor learning ability and rehabilitation motivation among stroke patients. After stroke, even high-functioning individuals may experience compromised bimanual coordination and fine motor dexterity, leading to reduced functional independence. Bilateral arm training has been proposed as a promising intervention to address these deficits. However, the neural basis of the impairment of functional fine motor skills and their relationship to bimanual coordination performance in stroke patients remains unclear, limiting the development of more targeted interventions. To address this gap, our study employed functional near-infrared spectroscopy to investigate cortical responses in patients after stroke as they perform functional tasks that engage fine motor control and coordination. Twenty-four high-functioning patients with ischemic stroke (7 women, 17 men; mean age 64.75 ± 10.84 years) participated in this cross-sectional observational study and completed four subtasks from the Purdue Pegboard Test, which measures unimanual and bimanual finger and hand dexterity. We found significant bilateral activation of the sensorimotor cortices during all Purdue Pegboard Test subtasks, with bimanual tasks inducing higher cortical activation than the assembly subtask. Importantly, patients with better bimanual coordination exhibited lower cortical activation during the other three Purdue Pegboard Test subtasks. Notably, the observed neural response patterns varied depending on the specific subtask. In the unaffected hand task, the differences were primarily observed in the ipsilesional hemisphere. In contrast, the bilateral sensorimotor cortices and the contralesional hemisphere played a more prominent role in the bimanual task and assembly task, respectively. While significant correlations were found between cortical activation and unimanual tasks, no significant correlations were observed with bimanual tasks. This study provides insights into the neural basis of bimanual coordination and fine motor skills in high-functioning patients after stroke, highlighting task-dependent neural responses. The findings also suggest that patients who exhibit better bimanual performance demonstrate more efficient cortical activation. Therefore, incorporating bilateral arm training in post-stroke rehabilitation is important for better outcomes.
