Search

Effective models focused on pertinent low-energy degrees of freedom have substantially contributed to our qualitative understanding of quantum materials. An iconic example, the Kondo model, was key to demonstrating that the rich phase diagrams of correlated metals originate from the interplay of localized and itinerant electrons. Modern electronic structure calculations suggest that to achieve quantitative material-specific models, accurate consideration of the crystal field and spin-orbit interactions is imperative. This poses the question of how local high-energy degrees of freedom become incorporated into a collective electronic state. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) on CePd$_3$ to clarify the fate of all relevant energy scales. We find that even spin-orbit excited states acquire pronounced momentum-dependence at low temperature - the telltale sign of hybridization with the underlying metallic state. Our results demonstrate how localized electronic degrees of freedom endow correlated metals with new properties, which is critical for a microscopic understanding of superconducting, electronic nematic, and topological states.

Piezoresistance, the change of a material's electrical resistance ($R$) in response to an applied mechanical stress ($\sigma$), is the driving principle of electromechanical devices such as strain gauges, accelerometers, and cantilever force sensors. Enhanced piezoresistance has been traditionally observed in two classes of uncorrelated materials: nonmagnetic semiconductors and composite structures. We report the discovery of a remarkably large piezoresistance in Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ single crystals, wherein anisotropic metallic clusters naturally form within a semiconducting matrix due to electronic interactions. Eu$_5$In$_2$Sb$_6$ shows a highly anisotropic piezoresistance, and uniaxial pressure along [001] of only 0.4~GPa leads to a resistivity drop of more than 99.95\% that results in a colossal piezoresistance factor of $5000\times10^{-11}$Pa$^{-1}$. Our result not only reveals the role of interactions and phase separation in the realization of colossal piezoresistance, but it also highlights a novel route to multi-functional devices with large responses to both pressure and magnetic field., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) systems hosting intrinsic long-range magnetic order represents a seminal addition to the rich physical landscape of van der Waals (vdW) materials. CrI3 has emerged as perhaps the most salient example, as the interdependence of crystalline structure and magnetic order, along with strong light-matter interactions provides a promising platform to explore the optical control of magnetic, vibrational, and charge degrees of freedom at the 2D limit. However, the fundamental question of how this relationship between structure and magnetism manifests on their intrinsic timescales has rarely been explored. Here, we use ultrafast optical spectroscopy to probe magnetic and vibrational dynamics in CrI3, revealing demagnetization dynamics governed by spin-flip scattering and remarkably, a strong transient exchange-mediated interaction between lattice vibrations and spin oscillations. The latter yields a coherent spin-coupled phonon mode that is highly sensitive to the helicity of the driving pulse in the magnetically ordered phase. Our results shed light on the nature of spin-lattice coupling in vdW magnets on ultrafast timescales and highlight their potential for applications requiring non-thermal, high-speed control of magnetism at the nanoscale., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We report the electronic and magnetic properties of stoichiometric CeAuBi$_{2}$ single crystals. At ambient pressure, CeAuBi$_{2}$ orders antiferromagnetically below a N\'{e}el temperature ($T_{N}$) of 19 K. Neutron diffraction experiments revealed an antiferromagnetic propagation vector $\hat{\tau} = [0, 0, 1/2]$, which doubles the paramagnetic unit cell along the $c$-axis. At low temperatures several metamagnetic transitions are induced by the application of fields parallel to the $c$-axis, suggesting that the magnetic structure of CeAuBi$_{2}$ changes as a function of field. At low temperatures, a linear positive magnetoresistance may indicate the presence of band crossings near the Fermi level. Finally, the application of external pressure favors the antiferromagnetic state, indicating that the 4$f$ electrons become more localized.

In this paper, we present a new deep learning disruption prediction algorithm based on important findings from explorative data analysis which effectively allows knowledge transfer from existing devices to new ones, thereby predicting disruptions using very limited disruptive data from the new devices. The explorative data analysis conducted via unsupervised clustering techniques confirms that time-sequence data are much better separators of disruptive and non-disruptive behavior than the instantaneous plasma state data with further advantageous implications for a sequence-based predictor. Based on such important findings, we have designed a new algorithm for multi-machine disruption prediction that achieves high predictive accuracy on the C-Mod (AUC=0.801), DIII-D (AUC=0.947) and EAST (AUC=0.973) tokamaks with limited hyperparameter tuning. Through numerical experiments, we show that boosted accuracy (AUC=0.959) is achieved on EAST predictions by including in the training only 20 disruptive discharges, thousands of non-disruptive discharges from EAST, and combining this with more than a thousand discharges from DIII-D and C-Mod. The improvement of predictive ability obtained by combining disruptive data from other devices is found to be true for all permutations of the three devices. Furthermore, by comparing the predictive performance of each individual numerical experiment, we find that non-disruptive data are machine-specific while disruptive data from multiple devices contain device-independent knowledge that can be used to inform predictions for disruptions occurring on a new device.

Symmetry plays a central role in conventional and topological phases of matter, making the ability to optically drive symmetry change a critical step in developing future technologies that rely on such control. Topological materials, like the newly discovered topological semimetals, are particularly sensitive to a breaking or restoring of time-reversal and crystalline symmetries, which affect both bulk and surface electronic states. While previous studies have focused on controlling symmetry via coupling to the crystal lattice, we demonstrate here an all-electronic mechanism based on photocurrent generation. Using second-harmonic generation spectroscopy as a sensitive probe of symmetry change, we observe an ultrafast breaking of time-reversal and spatial symmetries following femtosecond optical excitation in the prototypical type-I Weyl semimetal TaAs. Our results show that optically driven photocurrents can be tailored to explicitly break electronic symmetry in a generic fashion, opening up the possibility of driving phase transitions between symmetry-protected states on ultrafast time scales., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, 4 Tables

We report electrical transport measurements on CaMn$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$ single crystals under applied pressure. At ambient pressure and high temperatures, CaMn$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$ behaves as a single-band semimetal hosting N\'{e}el order at $T_{N}=150$~K. At low temperatures, multi-band behavior emerges along with an activated behavior typical of degenerate semiconductors. The activation gap is estimated to be $\Delta \sim 20$~K. Applied pressure not only favors the antiferromagnetic order at a rate of 0.40(2)~K/kbar, but also enhances the activation gap at $20$~kbar by about $70$~\%. This gap enhancement is typical of correlated narrow-gap semiconductors such as FeSi and Ce$_{3}$Bi$_{4}$Pt$_{3}$, and places CaMn$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$ as a Mn-based hybridization-gap semiconductor candidate. \textit{Ab initio} calculations based on the density functional theory are shown to be insufficient to describe the ground state of CaMn$_{2}$Bi$_{2}$., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

The electronic structure of plutonium metal and its compounds pose a grand challenge for a fundamental understanding of the Pu-5$f$ electron character. For 30 years the plutonium chalcogenides have been especially challenging, and multiple theoretical scenarios have been proposed to explain their unusual behavior. We present extensive high-resolution photoemission data on a single crystal of PuTe, which has also been proposed as a topological insulator. The new experimental results on this mixed-valent material provide a constraint to the theoretical modeling and new dynamical mean-field theory calculations agree with the experimental results. We present a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study of ${}^{239}$Pu in bulk and powdered single-crystal plutonium tetraboride (PuB$_4$), which has recently been investigated as a potential correlated topological insulator. This study constitutes the second-ever observation of the ${}^{239}$Pu NMR signal, and provides unique on-site sensitivity to the rich $f$-electron physics and insight into the bulk gap-like behavior in PuB$_4$. The ${}^{239}$Pu NMR spectra are consistent with axial symmetry of the shift tensor showing for the first time that ${}^{239}$Pu NMR can be observed in an anisotropic environment and up to room temperature. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{239}$Pu shift, combined with a relatively long spin-lattice relaxation time ($T_1$), indicate that PuB$_4$ adopts a non-magnetic state with gap-like behavior consistent with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The temperature dependencies of the NMR Knight shift and $T_1^{-1}$--microscopic quantities sensitive only to bulk states--imply bulk gap-like behavior confirming that PuB$_4$ is a good candidate topological insulator. The large contrast between the ${}^{239}$Pu orbital shifts in the ionic insulator PuO$_2$ ($\sim$~+24.7~\%) and PuB$_4$ ($\sim$~-0.5~\%) provides a new tool to investigate the nature of chemical bonding in plutonium materials., Comment: Accepted to PRB Dec. 14, 2018

We investigate polarization-dependent ultrafast photocurrents in the Weyl semimetal TaAs using terahertz (THz) emission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that highly directional, transient photocurrents are generated along the non-centrosymmetric c-axis regardless of incident light polarization, while helicity-dependent photocurrents are excited within the ab-plane. This is consistent with earlier static photocurrent experiments, and demonstrates on the basis of both the physical constraints imposed by symmetry and the temporal dynamics intrinsic to current generation and decay that optically induced photocurrents in TaAs are inherent to the underlying crystal symmetry of the transition metal monopnictide family of Weyl semimetals.

Quantum matter hosts a large variety of phases, some coexisting, some competing; when two or more orders occur together, they are often entangled and cannot be separated. Dynamical multiferroicity, where fluctuations of electric dipoles lead to magnetisation, is an example where the two orders are impossible to disentangle. Here we demonstrate elevated magnetic response of a ferroelectric near the ferroelectric quantum critical point (FE QCP) since magnetic fluctuations are entangled with ferroelectric fluctuations. We thus suggest that any ferroelectric quantum critical point is an \textit{inherent} multiferroic quantum critical point. We calculate the magnetic susceptibility near the FE QCP and find a region with enhanced magnetic signatures that appears near the FE QCP, and controlled by the tuning parameter of the ferroelectric phase. The effect is small but observable - we propose quantum paraelectric strontium titanate as a candidate material where the magnitude of the induced magnetic moments can be $\sim 5 \times 10^{-7} \mu_{B}$ per unit cell near the FE QCP., Comment: 6+3 pages, 3+2 figures

A key issue in heavy fermion research is how subtle changes in the hybridization between the 4$f$ (5$f$) and conduction electrons can result in fundamentally different ground states. CeRhIn$_5$ stands out as a particularly notable example: replacing Rh by either Co or Ir, located above or below Rh in the periodic table, antiferromagnetism gives way to superconductivity. In this photoemission study of CeRhIn$_5$, we demonstrate that the use of resonant ARPES with polarized light allows to extract detailed information on the 4$f$ crystal field states and details on the 4$f$ and conduction electron hybridization which together determine the ground state. We directly observe weakly dispersive Kondo resonances of $f$-electrons and identify two of the three Ce $4f_{5/2}^{1}$ crystal-electric-field levels and band-dependent hybridization, which signals that the hybridization occurs primarily between the Ce $4f$ states in the CeIn$_3$ layer and two more three-dimensional bands composed of the Rh $4d$ and In $5p$ orbitals in the RhIn$_2$ layer. We study the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with the nearest-neighbor $J_1 > 0$, the next-nearest-neighobr $J_2 > 0$ Heisenberg interactions, and the additional scalar chiral interaction $J_{\chi}(\vec{S}_i \times \vec{S}_j) \cdot \vec{S}_k$ for the three spins in all the triangles using large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculation on cylinder geometry. With increasing $J_2$ ($J_2/J_1 \leq 0.3$) and $J_{\chi}$ ($J_{\chi}/J_1 \leq 1.0$) interactions, we establish a quantum phase diagram with the magnetically ordered $120^{\circ}$ phase, stripe phase, and non-coplanar tetrahedral phase. In between these magnetic order phases, we find a chiral spin liquid (CSL) phase, which is identified as a $\nu = 1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state with possible spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking. By switching on the chiral interaction, we find that the previously identified spin liquid in the $J_1 - J_2$ triangular model ($0.08 \lesssim J_2/J_1 \lesssim 0.15$) shows a phase transition to the CSL phase at very small $J_{\chi}$. We also compute spin triplet gap in both spin liquid phases, and our finite-size results suggest large gap in the odd topological sector but small or vanishing gap in the even sector. Strong coupling between discrete phonon and continuous electron-hole pair excitations can give rise to a pronounced asymmetry in the phonon line shape, known as the Fano resonance. This effect has been observed in a variety of systems, such as stripe-phase nickelates, graphene and high-$T_{c}$ superconductors. Here, we reveal explicit evidence for strong coupling between an infrared-active $A_1$ phonon and electronic transitions near the Weyl points (Weyl fermions) through the observation of a Fano resonance in the recently discovered Weyl semimetal TaAs. The resultant asymmetry in the phonon line shape, conspicuous at low temperatures, diminishes continuously as the temperature increases. This anomalous behavior originates from the suppression of the electronic transitions near the Weyl points due to the decreasing occupation of electronic states below the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) with increasing temperature, as well as Pauli blocking caused by thermally excited electrons above $E_{F}$. Our findings not only elucidate the underlying mechanism governing the tunable Fano resonance, but also open a new route for exploring exotic physical phenomena through the properties of phonons in Weyl semimetals., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate a new approach for directly measuring the ultrafast energy transfer between elec- trons and magnons, enabling us to track spin dynamics in an antiferromagnet (AFM). In multiferroic HoMnO3, optical photoexcitation creates hot electrons, after which changes in the spin order are probed with a THz pulse tuned to a magnon resonance. This reveals a photoinduced transparency, which builds up over several picoseconds as the spins heat up due to energy transfer from hot elec- trons via phonons. This spin-lattice thermalization time is ?10 times faster than that of typical ferromagnetic (FM) manganites. We qualitatively explain the fundamental differences in spin-lattice thermalization between FM and AFM systems and apply a Boltzmann equation model for treating AFMs. Our work gives new insight into spin-lattice thermalization in AFMs and demonstrates a new approach for directly monitoring the ultrafast dynamics of spin order in these systems.

A central issue in material science is to obtain understanding of the electronic correlations that control complex materials. Such electronic correlations frequently arise due to the competition of localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom. While the respective limits of well-localized or entirely itinerant ground states are well-understood, the intermediate regime that controls the functional properties of complex materials continues to challenge theoretical understanding. We have used neutron spectroscopy to investigate plutonium, which is a prototypical material at the brink between bonding and non-bonding configurations. Our study reveals that the ground state of plutonium is governed by valence fluctuations, that is, a quantum-mechanical superposition of localized and itinerant electronic configurations as recently predicted by dynamical mean field theory. Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy is used to track carrier dynamics in the large magnetoresistance material WTe$_{2}$. Our experiments reveal a fast relaxation process occurring on a sub-picosecond time scale that is caused by electron-phonon thermalization, allowing us to extract the electron-phonon coupling constant. An additional slower relaxation process, occurring on a time scale of $\sim$5-15 picoseconds, is attributed to phonon-assisted electron-hole recombination. As the temperature decreases from 300 K, the timescale governing this process increases due to the reduction of the phonon population. However, below $\sim$50 K, an unusual decrease of the recombination time sets in, most likely due to a change in the electronic structure that has been linked to the large magnetoresistance observed in this material., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Conventional, thermally-driven continuous phase transitions are described by universal critical behaviour that is independent of the specific microscopic details of a material. However, many current studies focus on materials that exhibit quantum-driven continuous phase transitions (quantum critical points, or QCPs) at absolute zero temperature. The classification of such QCPs and the question of whether they show universal behaviour remain open issues. Here we report measurements of heat capacity and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic QCP (B$_{c0}\simeq$ 50 T) in the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn$_5$. A sharp, magnetic-field-induced change in Fermi surface is detected both in the dHvA effect and Hall resistivity at B$_0^*\simeq$ 30 T, well inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Comparisons with band-structure calculations and properties of isostructural CeCoIn$_5$ suggest that the Fermi-surface change at B$_0^*$ is associated with a localized to itinerant transition of the Ce-4f electrons in CeRhIn$_5$. In four classes of materials, the layered copper-oxides, organics, iron-pnictides and heavy-fermion compounds, an unconventional superconducting state emerges as a magnetic transition is tuned toward absolute zero temperature, that is, toward a magnetic quantum-critical point (QCP). In most materials, the QCP is accessed by chemical substitutions or applied pressure. CeCoIn5 is one of the few materials that are born as a quantum-critical superconductor and, therefore, offers the opportunity to explore the consequences of chemical disorder. Cadmium-doped crystals of CeCoIn5 are a particularly interesting case where Cd substitution induces long-range magnetic order, as in Zn-doped copper-oxides. Applied pressure globally supresses the Cd-induced magnetic order and restores bulk superconductivity. Here we show, however, that local magnetic correlations, whose spatial extent decreases with applied pressure, persist at the extrapolated QCP. The residual droplets of impurity-induced magnetic moments prevent the reappearance of conventional signatures of quantum criticality, but induce a heterogeneous electronic state. These discoveries show that spin droplets can be a source of electronic heterogeneity in classes of strongly correlated electron systems and emphasize the need for caution when interpreting the effects of tuning a correlated system by chemical substitution., Comment: main text and supplementary information

The spin-fluctuation mechanism of superconductivity usually results in the presence of gapless or nodal quasiparticle states in the excitation spectrum. Nodal quasiparticle states are well established in copper-oxide, and heavy-fermion superconductors, but not in iron-based superconductors. Here, we study the pairing symmetry and mechanism of a new class of plutonium-based high-Tc superconductors and predict the presence of a nodal $s^{+-}$ wave pairing symmetry in this family. Starting from a density-functional theory (DFT) based electronic structure calculation we predict several three-dimensional (3D) Fermi surfaces in this 115 superconductor family. We identify the dominant Fermi surface ``hot-spots' in the inter-band scattering channel, which are aligned along the wavevector ${\bf Q}\sim(\pi,\pi,\pi)$, where degeneracy could induce sign-reversal of the pairing symmetry. Our calculation demonstrates that the $s^{+-}$ wave pairing strength is stronger than the previously thought $d$-wave pairing; and more importantly, this pairing state allows for the existence of nodal quasiparticles. We report measurements of magnetic quantum oscillations and specific heat at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP)(B_{c0}\approx50T) of the heavy-fermion metal CeRhIn_5. A sharp magnetic-field induced Fermi surface reconstruction is observed inside the antiferromagnetic phase. Our results demonstrate multiple classes of QCPs in the field-pressure phase diagram of this heavy-fermion metal, pointing to a universal description of QCPs. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy is used to study the antiferromagnetic f-electron system USb2. We observe the opening of two charge gaps at low temperatures (<45 K), arising from renormalization of the electronic structure. Analysis of our data indicates that one gap is due to hybridization between localized f-electron and conduction electron bands, while band renormalization involving magnons leads to the emergence of the second gap. These experiments thus enable us to shed light on the complex electronic structure emerging at the Fermi surface in f-electron systems.

We report a globally reversible effect of electronic tuning on the magnetic phase diagram in CeCoIn_{5} driven by electron (Pt and Sn) and hole (Cd, Hg) doping. Consequently, we are able to extract the superconducting pair breaking component for hole and electron dopants with pressure and co-doping studies, respectively. We find that these nominally non-magnetic dopants have a remarkably weak pair breaking effect for a d-wave superconductor. The pair breaking is weaker for hole dopants, which induce magnetic moments, than for electron dopants. Furthermore, both Pt and Sn doping have a similar effect on superconductivity despite being on different dopant sites, arguing against the notion that superconductivity lives predominantly in the CeIn_{3} planes of these materials. Flux-grown single crystals of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ are characterized and found to be both non-superconducting and non-magnetic down to 2 K. The Sommerfeld specific heat coefficient of $\sim 250$ mJ/mol K$^2$ indicates heavy fermion behavior. We report the results of generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+$U$ calculations of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ and as yet unsynthesized isovalent PuPt$_2$Ga$_7$. The strength of the $c$-$f$ hybridization of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ is similar to the PuCoIn$_5$ superconductor. The bare and $f$-weighted susceptibility within the constant-matrix-element approximation is calculated, showing a maximum along the $q_z$ direction at $q_x = q_y = 0.5$. A similar and slightly stronger maximum is also found in the structurally related heavy-fermion materials PuCoGa$_5$ and PuCoIn$_5$. Ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy is used to reveal the coexistence of coupled antiferromagnetic/ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders in multiferroic TbMnO3 films through their time domain signatures. Our observations are explained by a theoretical model describing the coupling between reservoirs with different magnetic properties. Temperature dependence of relaxation dynamics of UX$_{3}$ (X = Al, Ga, Sn) compounds is studied using time resolved pump-probe technique in the reflectance geometry. UGa$_{3}$ is an itinerant antiferromagnet, while UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$ are spin fluctuation systems. For UGa$_{3}$, our data are consistent with the formation of a spin density wave SDW gap as evidenced from the quasidivergence of the relaxation time $\tau$ near the N\'{e}el temperature $T_{N}$. For UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$, the relaxation dynamics shows a change from single exponential to two exponential behavior below a particular temperature, suggestive of coherence formation of the 5\textit{f} electrons with the conduction band electrons. This particular temperature can be attributed to the spin fluctuation temperature $T_{sf}$, a measure of the strength of Kondo coherence. Our $T_{sf}$ is consistent with other data such as resistivity and susceptibility measurements. The temperature dependence of the relaxation amplitude and time of UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$ were also fitted by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconducting pairing. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario - evidence for the presence of a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the superconducting state is consistent with the heavy character of the quasiparticles that participate in Cooper pairing.

We investigate dynamical transport aspects of a combined nanomechanical-superconducting device in which Cooper pair tunneling interfere with the mechanical motion of a vibrating molecular quantum dot embedded in a Josephson junction. Six different regimes for the tunneling dynamics are identified with respect to the electron level and the charging energy in the quantum dot. In five of those regimes new time-scales are introduced which are associated with the energies of the single electron transitions within the quantum dot, while there is one regime where the internal properties of the quantum dot are static., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, Phys. We focus on inelastic neutron scattering in $URu_2Si_2$ and argue that observed gap in the fermion spectrum naturally leads to the spin feature observed at energies $\omega_{res} = 4-6 meV$ at momenta at $\bQ^* = (1\pm 0.4, 0,0)$. We discuss how spin features seen in $URu_2Si_2$ can indeed be thought of in terms of {\em spin resonance} that develops in HO state and is {\em not related} to superconducting transition at 1.5K. In our analysis we assume that the HO gap is due to a particle-hole condensate that connects nested parts of the Fermi surface with nesting vector $\bf{Q}^* $. Within this approach we can predicted the behavior of the spin susceptibility at $\bQ^*$ and find it to be is strikingly similar to the phenomenology of resonance peaks in high-T$_c$ and heavy fermion superconductors. The energy of the resonance peak scales with $T_{HO}$ $\omega_{res} \simeq 4 k_BT_{HO}$. Superconductivity without phonons has been proposed for strongly correlated electron materials that are tuned close to a zero-temperature magnetic instability of itinerant charge carriers. Near this boundary, quantum fluctuations of magnetic degrees of freedom assume the role of phonons in conventional superconductors, creating an attractive interaction that glues electrons into superconducting pairs. Here we show that superconductivity can arise from a very different spectrum of fluctuations associated with a local or Kondo-breakdown quantum-critical point that is revealed in isotropic scattering of charge carriers and a sub-linear temperature-dependent electrical resistivity. At this critical point, accessed by applying pressure to the strongly correlated, local-moment antiferromagnet CeRhIn5, magnetic and charge fluctuations coexist and produce electronic scattering that is maximal at the optimal pressure for superconductivity. We report measurements of quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in the high-temperature superconductor (Ba,K)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ in optimally doped, underdoped and undoped regimes. In the underdoped sample, spin-density wave (SDW) order forms at $\sim$85 K, followed by superconductivity at $\sim$ 28 K. We find the emergence of a normal-state order that suppresses SDW at a temperature $T^{\ast} \sim$ 60 K and argue that this normal-state order is a precursor to superconductivity., Comment: Major revision

We consider a combined nanomechanical-supercondcuting device that allows the Cooper pair tunneling to interfere with the mechanical motion of the middle superconducting island. Coupling of mechanical oscillations of a superconducting island between two superconducting leads to the electronic tunneling generate a supercurrent which is modulated by the oscillatory motion of the island. This coupling produces alternating finite and vanishing supercurrent as function of the superconducting phases. Current peaks are sensitive to the superconducting phase shifts relative to each other. We have measured the temperature dependence and magnitude of the superfluid density $\rho_{\rm s}(T)$ via the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in PuCoGa$_5$ (nominal critical temperature $T_{c0} = 18.5$ K) using the muon spin rotation technique in order to investigate the symmetry of the order parameter, and to study the effects of aging on the superconducting properties of a radioactive material. The same single crystals were measured after 25 days ($T_c = 18.25$ K) and 400 days ($T_c = 15.0$ K) of aging at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described in both materials by a model using d-wave gap symmetry. The magnitude of the muon spin relaxation rate $\sigma$ in the aged sample, $\sigma\propto 1/\lambda^2\propto\rho_s/m^*$, where $m^*$ is the effective mass, is reduced by about 70% compared to fresh sample. This indicates that the scattering from self-irradiation induced defects is not in the limit of the conventional Abrikosov-Gor'kov pair-breaking theory, but rather in the limit of short coherence length (about 2 nm in PuCoGa$_5$) superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages

Formation of electron pairs is essential to superconductivity. For conventional superconductors, tunnelling spectroscopy has established that pairing is mediated by bosonic modes (phonons); a peak in the second derivative of tunnel current d2I/dV2 corresponds to each phonon mode . For high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity, however, no boson mediating electron pairing has been identified. One explanation could be that electron pair formation and related electron-boson interactions are heterogeneous at the atomic scale and therefore challenging to characterize. However, with the latest advances in d2I/dV2 spectroscopy using scanning tunnelling microscopy, it has become possible to study bosonic modes directly at the atomic scale . Here we report d2I/dV2 imaging studies of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. We find intense disorder of electron-boson interaction energies at the nanometre scale, along with the expected modulations in d2I/dV2 (refs 9,10). Changing the density of holes has minimal effects on both the average mode energies and the modulations, indicating that the bosonic modes are unrelated to electronic or magnetic structure. Instead, the modes appear to be local lattice vibrations, as substitution of 18O for 16O throughout the material reduces the average mode energy by approximately 6 per cent - the expected effect of this isotope substitution on lattice vibration frequencies. Significantly, the mode energies are always spatially anticorrelated with the superconducting pairing-gap energies, suggesting an interplay between these lattice vibration modes and the superconductivity., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures. We present the first numerical study of the Falicov-Kimball model extended by an on-site hybridization away from the particle-hole symmetry point. Stable polaronic distortions of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase are observed when doping with a single hole. For moderate hole-doping, we find phase separation between a hole-rich homogeneous state and the usual CDW state. Excitonic order is enhanced around the hole-rich region, locally manifesting the global competition between this and the CDW phase. Associated with the hole-doping is a fractionalization of the electron density between the itinerant and localized electrons. The calculated local density of states at the polaron centre reveals this fractionalization to be the result of charge fluctuations induced by the hybridization.
