Point cloud has been the mainstream representation for advanced 3D applications, such as virtual reality and augmented reality. However, the massive data amounts of point clouds is one of the most challenging issues for transmission and storage. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end voxel Transformer and Sparse Convolution based Point Cloud Attribute Compression (TSC-PCAC) for 3D broadcasting. Firstly, we present a framework of the TSC-PCAC, which include Transformer and Sparse Convolutional Module (TSCM) based variational autoencoder and channel context module. Secondly, we propose a two-stage TSCM, where the first stage focuses on modeling local dependencies and feature representations of the point clouds, and the second stage captures global features through spatial and channel pooling encompassing larger receptive fields. This module effectively extracts global and local interpoint relevance to reduce informational redundancy. Thirdly, we design a TSCM based channel context module to exploit interchannel correlations, which improves the predicted probability distribution of quantized latent representations and thus reduces the bitrate. Experimental results indicate that the proposed TSC-PCAC method achieves an average of 38.53%, 21.30%, and 11.19% Bjontegaard Delta bitrate reductions compared to the Sparse-PCAC, NF-PCAC, and G-PCC v23 methods, respectively. The encoding/decoding time costs are reduced up to 97.68%/98.78% on average compared to the Sparse-PCAC. In intra coding, Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) is performed to achieve the optimal intra mode from a pre-defined candidate list. The optimal intra mode is also required to be encoded and transmitted to the decoder side besides the residual signal, where lots of coding bits are consumed. To further improve the performance of intra coding in Versatile Video Coding (VVC), an intelligent intra mode derivation method is proposed in this paper, termed as Deep Learning based Intra Mode Derivation (DLIMD). In specific, the process of intra mode derivation is formulated as a multi-class classification task, which aims to skip the module of intra mode signaling for coding bits reduction. The architecture of DLIMD is developed to adapt to different quantization parameter settings and variable coding blocks including non-square ones, which are handled by one single trained model. Different from the existing deep learning based classification problems, the hand-crafted features are also fed into the intra mode derivation network besides the learned features from feature learning network. To compete with traditional method, one additional binary flag is utilized in the video codec to indicate the selected scheme with RDO. Extensive experimental results reveal that the proposed method can achieve 2.28%, 1.74%, and 2.18% bit rate reduction on average for Y, U, and V components on the platform of VVC test model, which outperforms the state-of-the-art works., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ACM TOMM

In this paper, we propose a distortion-aware loop filtering model to improve the performance of intra coding for 360$^o$ videos projected via equirectangular projection (ERP) format. To enable the awareness of distortion, our proposed module analyzes content characteristics based on a coding unit (CU) partition mask and processes them through partial convolution to activate the specified area. The feature recalibration module, which leverages cascaded residual channel-wise attention blocks (RCABs) to adjust the inter-channel and intra-channel features automatically, is capable of adapting with different quality levels. The perceptual geometry optimization combining with weighted mean squared error (WMSE) and the perceptual loss guarantees both the local field of view (FoV) and global image reconstruction with high quality. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed scheme achieves significant bitrate savings compared with the anchor (HM + 360Lib), leading to 8.9%, 9.0%, 7.1% and 7.4% on average bit rate reductions in terms of PSNR, WPSNR, and PSNR of two viewports for luminance component of 360^o videos, respectively.

To provide users with more realistic visual experiences, videos are developing in the trends of Ultra High Definition (UHD), High Frame Rate (HFR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), Wide Color Gammut (WCG) and high clarity. However, the data amount of videos increases exponentially, which requires high efficiency video compression for storage and network transmission. Perceptually optimized video coding aims to maximize compression efficiency by exploiting visual redundancies. In this paper, we present a broad and systematic survey on perceptually optimized video coding. Firstly, we present problem formulation and framework of the perceptually optimized video coding, which includes visual perception modelling, visual quality assessment and perceptual video coding optimization. Secondly, recent advances on visual factors, computational perceptual models and quality assessment models are presented. Thirdly, we review perceptual video coding optimizations from four key aspects, including perceptually optimized bit allocation, rate-distortion optimization, transform and quantization, filtering and enhancement. In each part, problem formulation, working flow, recent advances, advantages and challenges are presented. Fourthly, perceptual coding performances of the latest coding standards and tools are experimentally analyzed. Light's orbital angular momentum (OAM) with inherent mode orthogonality has been suggested as a new way to the optical encryption. However, the dependence of annular intensity profiles on the topological charge complicates nanoscale light-matter interactions and hampers the ultra-secure encryption application. In this paper, we demonstrate ultra-secure image encryption by tightly focusing perfect optical vortex (POV) beams with controllable annular intensity profiles and OAM states. A simple scheme composed of single spatial light modulator is proposed to generate radius-controllable POV in tightly focused beams. Such focused POV beams with identical intensity profiles but varied OAM states are applied to disorder-coupled gold nanorod aggregates to selectively excite electromagnetic hot spots for encoding information through photothermal deformation. As such, ultra-secure image encryption in OAM states of POV beams in combination with different polarizations can be achieved. Our results lay the ground for diverse nanophotonic applications harnessing the OAM division of POV beams.

Encoding information in light polarization is of great importance in facilitating optical data storage (ODS) for information security and data storage capacity escalation. However, despite recent advances in nanophotonic techniques vastly enhancing the feasibility of applying polarization channels, the data fidelity in reconstructed bits has been constrained by severe crosstalks occurring between varied polarization angles during data recording and reading process, which gravely hindered the utilization of this technique in practice. In this paper, we demonstrate an ultra-low crosstalk polarization-encoding multilayer optical data storage technique for high-fidelity data recording and retrieving by utilizing a nanofibre-based nanocomposite film involving highly aligned gold nanorods (GNRs). With parallelizing the gold nanorods in the recording medium, the information carrier configuration minimizes miswriting and misreading possibilities for information input and output, respectively, compared with its randomly self-assembled counterparts. The enhanced data accuracy has significantly improved the bit recall fidelity that is quantified by a correlation coefficient higher than 0.99. It is anticipated that the demonstrated technique can facilitate the development of multiplexing ODS for a greener future.

Compactly representing the visual signals is of fundamental importance in various image/video-centered applications. Although numerous approaches were developed for improving the image and video coding performance by removing the redundancies within visual signals, much less work has been dedicated to the transformation of the visual signals to another well-established modality for better representation capability. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for visual signal representation that leverages the philosophy of transferable modality. In particular, the deep learning model, which characterizes and absorbs the statistics of the input scene with online training, could be efficiently represented in the sense of rate-utility optimization to serve as the enhancement layer in the bitstream. As such, the overall performance can be further guaranteed by optimizing the new modality incorporated.
