PURPOSE: To evaluate VEGF-C-induced lymphoproliferation in conjunction with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) antimetabolite treatment in a rabbit glaucoma filtration surgery (GFS) model. METHODS: Thirty-two rabbits underwent GFS and were assigned to four groups (n = 8 each) defined by subconjunctival drug treatment: (a) VEGF-C combined with 5-FU, (b) 5-FU, (c) VEGF-C, (d) and control. Bleb survival, bleb measurements, and IOP were evaluated over 30 days. At the end, histology and anterior segment OCT were performed on some eyes. mRNA was isolated from the remaining eyes for RT-PCR evaluation of vessel-specific markers (lymphatics, podoplanin and LYVE-1; and blood vessels, CD31). RESULTS: Qualitatively and quantitatively, VEGF-C combined with 5-FU resulted in blebs which were posteriorly longer and wider than the other conditions: vs. 5-FU (P = 0.043 for longer, P = 0.046 for wider), vs. VEGF-C (P

Icing and frosting on transparent surfaces compromise visibility on various optical equipment and transparent infrastructures. It remains challenging to fabricate energy-saving coatings for harvesting solar energy while maintaining high transparency. Here, transparent, photothermic, and icephobic composite surfaces composed of photothermal nanomaterials and polyelectrolytes via layer-by-layer assembly are designed and constructed. The positively-charged polypyrrole nanoparticles and negatively-charged poly(acrylic acid) are assembled as exemplary materials via electrostatic attractions. The optically transparent photothermal coatings are successfully fabricated and exhibited photothermal capabilities and light-transmittance performance. Among the various coatings applied, the seven-bilayer coating can increase the temperature by 35 °C under 1.9-sun illumination, maintaining high transmittance (>60%) of visible light. With sunlight illumination at subzero temperatures (> -35 °C), the coatings show pronounced capabilities to inhibit freezing, melt accumulated frost, and decrease ice adhesion. Precisely, the icephobic surfaces remain free of frost at -35 °C as long as sunlight illumination is present; the accumulated frost melts rapidly within 300 s. The ice adhesion strength decreases to ≈0 kPa as the melted water acts as a lubricant. Furthermore, the negatively-charged graphene oxide and positively-charged poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) show their material diversity applicable in the coating fabrication.

Hydrogels have gained tremendous attention due to their versatility in soft electronics, actuators, biomedical sensors, etc. Due to the high water content, hydrogels are usually soft, weak, and freeze below 0°C, which brings severe limitations to applications such as soft robotics and flexible electronics in harsh environments. Most existing anti-freezing gels suffer from poor mechanical properties and urgently need further improvements. Here, we took inspirations from tendon and coniferous trees and provided an effective method to strengthen polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel while making it freeze resistant. The salting-out effect was utilized to create a hierarchically structured polymer network, which induced superior mechanical properties (Young's modulus: 10.1 MPa, tensile strength: 13.5 MPa, and toughness: 127.9 MJ/m3). Meanwhile, the cononsolvency effect was employed to preserve the structure and suppress the freezing point to -60°C. Moreover, we have demonstrated the broad applicability of our material by fabricating PVA hydrogel-based hydraulic actuators and ionic conductors.

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have large deformability but-when applied as actuators, smart switch, and artificial muscles-suffer from low work density due to low deliverable forces (~2 kPa) and speed through the osmotic pressure-driven actuation. Inspired by the energy conversion mechanism of many creatures during jumping, we designed an elastic-driven strong contractile hydrogel through storing and releasing elastic potential energy in polymer network. It can generate high contractile force (40 kPa) rapidly at ultrahigh work density (15.3 kJ/m3), outperforming current hydrogels (~0.01 kJ/m3) and even biological muscles (~8 kJ/m3). This demonstrated elastic energy storing and releasing method endows hydrogels with elasticity-plasticity switchability, multi-stable deformability in fully reversible and programmable manners, and anisotropic or isotropic deformation. With the high power density and programmability via this customizable modular design, these hydrogels demonstrated potential for broad applications in artificial muscles, contractile wound dressing, and high-power actuators.

Ice accumulation causes various problems in our daily life for human society. The daunting challenges in ice prevention and removal call for novel efficient antiicing strategies. Recently, photothermal materials have gained attention for creating icephobic surfaces owing to their merits of energy conservation and environmental friendliness. However, it is always challenging to get an ideal photothermal material which is cheap, easily fabricating, and highly photothermally efficient. Here, we demonstrate a low-cost, high-efficiency superhydrophobic photothermal surface, uniquely based on inexpensive commonly seen candle soot. It consists of three components: candle soot, silica shell, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes. The candle soot provides hierarchical nano/microstructures and photothermal ability, the silica shell strengthens the hierarchical candle soot, and the grafted low-surface-energy PDMS brushes endow the surface with superhydrophobicity. Upon illumination under 1 sun, the surface temperature can increase by 53 °C, so that no ice can form at an environmental temperature as low as -50 °C and it can also rapidly melt the accumulated frost and ice in 300 s. The superhydrophobicity enables the melted water to slide away immediately, leaving a clean and dry surface. The surface can also self-clean, which further enhances its effectiveness by removing dust and other contaminants which absorb and scatter sunlight. In addition, after oxygen plasma treatment, the surface can restore superhydrophobicity with sunlight illumination. The presented icephobic surface shows great potential and broad impacts owing to its inexpensive component materials, simplicity, ecofriendliness, and high energy efficiency.

The recent anti-icing strategies in the state of the art mainly focused on three aspects: inhibiting ice nucleation, preventing ice propagation, and decreasing ice adhesion strength. However, it is has proved difficult to prevent ice nucleation and propagation while decreasing adhesion simultaneously, due to their highly distinct, even contradictory design principles. In nature, anti-freeze proteins (AFPs) offer a prime example of multifunctional integrated anti-icing materials that excel in all three key aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously by tuning the structures and dynamics of interfacial water. Here, inspired by biological AFPs, we successfully created a multifunctional anti-icing material based on polydimethylsiloxane-grafted polyelectrolyte hydrogel that can tackle all three aspects of the anti-icing process simultaneously. The simplicity, mechanical durability, and versatility of these smooth hydrogel surfaces make it a promising option for a wide range of anti-icing applications.

Membrane materials that resist nonspecific or specific adsorption are urgently required in widespread practical applications, such as water purification, food processing, and life sciences. In water purification, inevitable membrane fouling not only limits membrane separation performance, leading to a decline in both permeance and selectivity, but also remarkably increases operation requirements, and augments extra maintenance costs and higher energy consumption. In this work, we report a freestanding interfacial polymerization (IP) fabrication strategy for in situ creation of asymmetric block copolymer (BCP) nanofilms with antifouling properties, greatly outperforming the conventional surface post‐modification approaches. The resultant free‐standing asymmetric BCP nanofilms with highly‐dense, highly‐hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) brushes on one side, can be readily formed via a typical IP process of a well‐defined double‐hydrophilic BCP composed of a highly‐efficient antifouling PEG block and a membrane‐forming multiamine block. The asymmetric BCP nanofilms have been applied for efficient and sustainable natural water purification, demonstrating extraordinary antifouling capabilities accompanied with superior separation performance far beyond commercial polyamide nanofiltration membranes. The antifouling behaviors of asymmetric BCP nanofilms derived from the combined effect of the hydration layer, electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance were further elucidated by water flux and fouling resistance in combination with all‐atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. This work opens up a new avenue for the large‐scale and low‐cost creation of broad‐spectrum, asymmetric membrane materials with diverse functional "defect‐free" surfaces in real‐world applications. The traditional freeway safety studies with 'poststatic' thinking basically use cross-sectional data or panel data, which find it difficult to figure out real-time traffic crash risk factors. With the development of information collection technology, it is possible to obtain high-resolution traffic flow data currently, which provide a data basis for the dynamic traffic safety research towards freeways. This research aims at accurately identifying the real-time traffic crash precursors on freeways and addressing the shortcomings of conventional dynamic traffic safety research with the thinking of limited factor dimensions. In this research, dimensional data were applied as input model variables, the input dataset includes traffic crash data and the matched dynamic traffic flow data, and weather information and road characteristics were also considered to figure out the interaction effects between these dimensional factors. The XGBoost (eXtreme Gradient Boosting) was carried out to identify the dynamic crash-prone variables and the SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) interpreter was introduced to interpret the XGBoost model, as well as the visualization of the influence of each eigenvalue on the traffic crash was realized. The results indicate that, in addition to traffic flow variables, road, weather, and temporal characteristics also have an impact on the traffic crash risk, and there is an interaction between each feature.
