In the past two decades, tremendous progress has been made in the field of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), which not only achieves breakthroughs in various key indicators (flipping energy barrier and hysteresis temperature), but also expands SMMs of various types (3d, 4f, 3d–4f and 5f) and different connection methods. Among the many different types of SMM mentioned above, the SMM based on the 4f metal center has made the biggest breakthrough. Introducing 3d metal ions into lanthanide complexes to form 3d–4f heterometallic complexes can promote strong magnetic exchange between multiple metal centers, resulting in magnetic properties different from 3d and 4f complexes. Therefore, the expansion of the structure and magnetic properties of 3d–4f heterometallic complexes can promote the progress in the field of SMM. Luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are appealing for the design of smart responsive materials, whereas aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) fluorophores with twisted molecular rotor structure provide exciting opportunities to construct MOFs with new topology and responsiveness. Herein, it is reported that elongating AIE rotor ligands can render the newly formed AIE MOF (ZnETTB) (ETTB = 4',4''',4''''',4'''''''‐(ethene‐1,1,2,2‐tetrayl)tetrakis(([1,1'‐biphenyl]‐3,5‐dicarboxylic acid))) with more elasticity, more control for intramolecular motion, and specific amide‐sensing capability. ZnETTB shows specific host–guest interaction with amide, where N,N‐diethylformamide (DEF), as an example, is anchored through CH···O and CH···π bonds with Zn cluster and ETTB8− ligand, respectively. DEF anchoring reduces both the distortion level and the intramolecular motions of ETTB8− ligand to lead a blueshifted and intensified emission for DEF ∈ ZnETTB. Moreover, amide anchoring also affords the DEF ∈ ZnETTB with the excellent thermofluorochromic behavior, and further increases the piezofluorochromic sensitivity at low‐pressure ranges on the basis of its elastic framework. This work is one of the rare examples of amide‐responsive smart materials, which shall shed new lights on design of smart MOFs with twisted AIE rotors for further sensing and detection applications. Smart luminescent metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) demonstrate promising performance in the detection of toxic gases. The incorporation of twisted or rotary organic ligands with aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) characteristics can provide further opportunities in designing such smart MOFs with new topologies and stimuli‐responsive behaviors. Herein, novel AIE MOFs are reported with reversible luminescence or a magnetic switch for HCl vapor detection. The twisted conformation of tetrakis(4‐carboxyphenyl)ethylene (TCPE) ligand leads to the unique [M+–L–M−–L–M]∞ (M = metal clusters, L = ligand) configuration for ZnMOF and CoMOF. Different from conventional MOFs with [M–L]∞ topology, ZnMOF and CoMOF exhibit a blue‐to‐yellow greenish fluorescence transition and a ferrimagnetic‐to‐antiferromagnetic switch behavior, respectively, upon recognition of HCl vapor. The adsorbed HCl molecules rather than coordinated ones are determined to be the main reason, and such luminescence and magnetic switch can be induced in a reversible manner via HCl vapor adsorption/desorption processes with high reliability. The design and synthesis of clusters possessing the same number of cores but different connection methods and properties have always been difficult. Herein, we used 2‐pyridinaldehyde, 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol, and Dy (ClO4)3·6H2O at room temperature (RT) to obtain the cluster [Dy4(L1)4(μ2‐OH)4]·4ClO4− (1, HL1 = 2‐pyridinecarboxaldehyde‐1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol) with square Dy4O8 cluster cores. Cluster 1 consisted of four Schiff base ligands (L1)−, four Dy(III) ions, four bridged (μ2‐OH)−, and four free ClO4−. The ligand HL1 was formed by in situ Schiff base reaction with 2‐pyridinecarbaldehyde and 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol in the presence of Dy(III) ions. 2‐Aldehyde‐8‐hydroxyquinoline, 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol, and Dy (NO3)3·6H2O reacted at RT to yield a tetranuclear Dy(III) cluster [Dy4(L2)2(μ3‐OH)2(NO3)4(EtOH)2]·2CH3CN (2, H3L2 = 2‐aldehyde‐8‐hydroxyquinoline‐1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol) with butterfly‐shaped Dy4O6 cluster core. Cluster 2 consisted of two ligands (L2)3−, four Dy(III) ions, two bridged μ3‐OH, two end‐group‐coordinated ethanol molecules, and four bidentate‐chelated NO3−. The in situ reaction of 2‐aldehyde‐8‐hydroxyquinoline and 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol under Dy(III) ion‐assisted catalytic conditions provided the ligand H3L2. It is worth noting that the magnetic test showed that 1 is a typical single‐molecule magnet (SMM), whereas 2 only showed a significant frequency dependence behavior. We considered Orbach and Raman processes (τ−1 = τ0−1 exp(−Ueff/kBT) + CTn) to fit 1 and 2 in the high‐temperature range and obtained Ueff = 7.01 and 5.43 K and τ0 = 1.18 × 10−4 and 4.14 × 10−5 s, respectively. Although great progress has been made in the design, synthesis, and performance expansion of porous materials, new porous materials with stable structures still need to be explored further. In recent years, porous molecular crystals formed by intermolecular interactions have attracted wide attention from chemists, especially metal hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (M-HOFs) formed by connecting metal complexes through hydrogen bonds. Metal complexes with specific properties (e.g., magnetism, luminescence, sensing, and catalysis) can expand and develop the application of M-HOFs further. However, the huge volume, irregular shape, complex coordination modes, and interference of coordination bonds pose certain challenges in the synthesis and performance expansion of M-HOFs. In this frontier, we summarize the latest progress in the use of 3d, 4d, and 4f metal complexes for the synthesis of M-HOFs, and briefly introduce the performance expansion of these M-HOFs, which is expected to help expand new porous materials with stable structures and specific functions. Coordination-driven self-assembly processes often produce remarkable structures. In particular, self-assembly processes mediated by chiral template units have provided research ideas for analyzing the formation of chiral macromolecules in living organisms. In this study, by regulating the proportion of reaction raw materials in the "one-pot" synthesis of lanthanide complexes, we constructed chiral template units with different coordination orientations. As a result, lanthanide chiral chains connected to different structures were obtained through the self-assembly process of coordination recognition. In particular, driven by coordination, chiral template units with codirectional coordination points (called cis configuration) coordinate solely with cis template units during the self-assembly process to obtain a one-dimensional (1D) chain R-1 / S-1 with an "S"-shaped distribution. Moreover, chiral template units with reversed coordination sites (called trans configuration) and twisted chiral template units are connected solely to templates with the same configuration to form a 1D chain R-2 / S-2 with an axial helix. A circular dichroism spectrum shows that R-1 / S-1 and R-2 / S-2 are two pairs of enantiomers. The controllable construction of these two differential 1D chains is of great significance for studying coordination recognition at the molecular level. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to construct a 1D lanthanide chain through the self-assembly process of coordination recognition. The assembly process of nucleotides to form a hierarchical structure is simulated. This work provides a vivid example of the controllable synthesis of lanthanide complexes with precise structures and offers a new perspective on the formation process of chiral macromolecules that simulates natural processes. A dinuclear Dy (III) complex [Dy2(L1)2(NO3)4]·2CH3CN (1) (HL1 = 1,3‐bis{[(E)‐pyridin‐2‐ylmethylene]amino}propan‐2‐ol) was obtained via the reaction of 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol, 2‐pyridyaldehyde and Dy (NO3)3·6H2O at room temperature. In the structure of complex 1, two Dy (III) ions are in the N4O6 coordination environment provided by NO3− and (L1)−, and both of these ions are in the sphenocorona configuration. [Dy2(L2)2(NO3)4] (2) [HL2 = 2‐(pyridin‐2‐yl)hexahydropyrimidin‐5‐ol] was obtained using the same reaction material only when the reaction temperature was changed to 60°C. Structural analysis of complex 2 showed that the two Dy (III) ions with the same coordination configuration are in the N3O6 coordination environment provided by NO3− and (L2)− and are in the distorted spherical‐capped square antiprism. Surprisingly, HL2 with the parent of bipyridine was synthesized by the Schiff base reaction of 1,3‐diamino‐2‐propanol with 2‐pyridoxaldehyde followed by the ring‐closing reaction catalyzed by Dy (III) ions. Magnetic measurements of the Dy (III) complexes revealed no obvious frequency‐dependent behavior of complex 1. In contrast, complex 2 showed an obvious frequency dependence (Ueff = 0.49 K and τ0 = 6.62 × 10−4 s) under the condition of zero field and a weak double relaxation behavior (Ueff = 9.25 K and τ0 = 9.70 × 10−4 s) at 1500 Oe. The most effective way to understand reaction mechanisms and kinetics is to identify the reaction intermediates and determine the possible reaction patterns. The influencing factors that must be considered in the self-assembly of clusters are the type of ligand, metal ion, coordination anion and the pH of the solution. However, changes in ligand substituents resulting in different self-assembly processes to obtain different types of structures are still very rare, especially with –H and –CH3 substituents, which do not exert significant steric hindrance effects. In this study, planar mononuclear Ni(L1)2 (L1 = 2-ethoxy-6-(iminomethyl)phenol) was dissolved in methanol and combined with Dy(NO3)3·6H2O for 48 h at room temperature to obtain a butterfly-like Ni2Dy2 cluster ([Dy2Ni2(L1)4(CH3O)2(NO3)4], 1). The Dy(III) ions in cluster 1 are in an O8N coordination environment, and the Ni(II) ions are in an O5N coordination environment. High-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) was used to track species changes during the formation of cluster 1. Six key intermediate fragments were screened, and the self-assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L1)2 → HL1 + NiL1 → DyL1/Ni(L1)2′ → DyNi(L1)2 → Dy2Ni2(L1)4. Through this assembly mechanism, we found that Ni(L1)2 was first cleaved into HL1 + NiL1 and then further assembled to obtain 1. Another butterfly-like tetranuclear heterometallic cluster ([Dy2Ni2(L2)4(CH3O)2(NO3)4], 2) was obtained using planar mononuclear Ni(L2)2 (L2 = (E)-2-ethoxy-6-((methylimino)methyl)phenol) with –CH3 substitution on the nitrogen atom under the same reaction conditions. The structural analysis of cluster 2 showed that the Dy(III) ions are in an O9 coordination environment, and the Ni(II) ions are in an O4N2 coordination environment. HRESI-MS was used to trace species changes during the formation of 2, and the assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L2)2 → DyNi(L2)2 → Dy2Ni(L2)2 → Dy2Ni2(L2)4. Analysis of the assembly mechanism of 2 showed that Ni(L2)2 was twisted during the reaction, and its coordination point was exposed to capture the Dy(III) ions. Finally, Dy(NO3)3·6H2O was replaced with NaN3 to obtain a [Ni2Na2(L2)4(N3)4] cluster (3) under the same reaction conditions and verify the above-mentioned torsion step. HRESI-MS was also used to trace the assembly process, and the assembly mechanism was proposed as Ni(L2)2 → NiNa(L2)2 → NiNa2(L2)2 → Ni2Na2(L2)4. Herein, the effect of interference from substitution and the regulation self-assembly process were discovered in the formation of 3d–4f heterometallic clusters, and different types of coordination clusters were obtained. Metal nanoclusters have a certain rigidity due to their specific coordination patterns and shapes; thus, they face extreme difficulty in folding into a specific direction to form a double‐helix structure and in further interconnecting to form metal–helix frameworks (MHFs). To date, no MHFs have been produced by the formation of heterometallic clusters. Selecting the appropriate "bonding molecules" to bond metal nanoclusters in a specific multiple direction is one of the most effective strategies for designing synthetic MHFs. In this study, we realized for the first time the control of different orientations of μ3‐NO3− to join heterometallic clusters (Cu10Dy2) and subsequently form a left‐handed double helix chain, which further joins to form MHFs. In the structure of the MHFs, four different directions of bridging μ3‐NO3− exist, three of which are involved in the linkage of the double‐helix chain. Each μ3‐NO3− is connected to three adjacent Cu10Dy2. Herein, we extend a new method for designing synthetic double‐helix structures and MHFs, thereby further laying the foundation for the development of similar DNA double‐helix structures and nucleic acid secondary structures in vitro. Although progress has been made in the design and synthesis of chiral lanthanide clusters with pleasing structural connections and special shapes, assembly rules that guide their directional construction are still lacking. We reacted R/S -mandelic acid hydrazide, 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and DyCl3·6H2O under solvothermal conditions to obtain two octanuclear chirality clusters R-1 and S-1 , which are the enantiomers of each other. R/S -mandelic acid hydrazide and 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde underwent an in situ reaction under "one-pot" conditions to generate a monohydrazone-type organic ligand R/S -mandelic acid hydrazide-2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde hydrazone (R/S -H2L). Four R/S -H2L ligands captured eight metal-centered Dy(III) ions and presented an annular arrangement, which assembled to form a pinwheel-shaped chiral cluster R/S-1. The benzene rings at the four vertices of R/S-1 can rotate freely as rotors. This is the first discovery of an annular growth mechanism during the self-assembly of lanthanide clusters. By changing the metal salt to Dy(NO3)3·6H2O, two twist-shaped hexanuclear clusters R-2 and S-2 , which are the enantiomers of each other were obtained. Four R/S -H2L and two R/S -H3L ligands captured six metal-centered Dy(III) ions, respectively, and were assembled through a linear growth mechanism to form the twist-shaped chiral clusters R/S-2. This is the first time that a linear growth mechanism has been proposed for the directional construction of lanthanide clusters with specific shapes. Circular dichroism results showed that R/S-1 and R/S-2 were both chiral clusters and enantiomers of each other. Magnetic studies showed that both R/S-1 and R/S-2 exhibit obvious single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviors under zero-field conditions. The complex hydrolysis process and strong uncertainty of self-assembly rules have led to the precise synthesis of lanthanide clusters still being in the "blind-box" stage and simplifying the self-assembly process and developing reliable regulation strategies have attracted widespread attention. Herein, different anions are used to induce the construction of a series of dysprosium clusters with different shapes and connections. When the selected anion is NO3−, it blocks the coordination of metal sites around the cluster through the terminal group coordination mode, thereby controlling the growth of the cluster. When NO3− was changed to OAc−, OAc− adopted a bridging mode to induce modular units to build dysprosium clusters through an annular growth mechanism. Specifically, we selected 2-amino-6-methoxybenzoic acid, 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and Dy(NO3)3·6H2O to react under solvothermal conditions to obtain a pentanuclear dysprosium cluster (1). The five Dy(III) ions in 1 are distributed in upper and lower planes and are formed by the tight connection of nitrogen and oxygen atoms, and μ3-OH− bridges on the ligand. Next, octa-nuclear dysprosium cluster (2) were obtained by only regulating ligand substituents. The eight Dy(III) ions in 2 are tightly connected through ligand oxygen atoms, μ2-OH−, and μ3-OH− bridges, forming an elliptical {Dy/O} cluster core. Furthermore, only by changing NO3− to OAc−, a wheel-shaped tetradeca-nuclear dysprosium cluster (3) was obtained. Cluster 3 is composed of OAc− bridged multiple template Dy3L3 units and pulling of these template units connected by an annular growth mechanism forms a wheel-shaped cluster. The angle of the coordination site on NO3− is ∠ONO = 115°, which leads to the further extension of the metal sites on the periphery of clusters 1 and 2 through the terminal group coordination mode, thereby regulating the structural connection of the clusters. However, the angle of the coordination site on OAc− is ∠OCO = 128°, and a slightly increased angle leads to the formation of a ring-shaped cluster 3 by connecting the template units through bridging. This is a rare example of the controllable construction of lanthanide clusters with different shapes induced by the regulation of different anions, which provides a new method for the precise construction of lanthanide clusters with special shapes. Specially shaped high-nuclear lanthanide cluster assembly has attracted widespread attention, but the study of their self-assembly mechanism is still stagnant. Herein, we used a polydentate chelating bis-acylhydrazone ligand to construct a rare 16-nuclear dysprosium cluster 1 with a brucite-like structure. The capture agents, pivalic acid and di(pyridin-2-yl)methanone, were added into the reaction system, and the hexanuclear dysprosium cluster 2 and heptanuclear dysprosium cluster 3 were obtained, respectively. Clusters 2 and 3 support the out-to-in growth mechanism as key evidence. Rapid kinetics, complex and diverse reaction intermediates, and difficult screening make the study of assembly mechanisms of high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters challenging. Here, we synthesize a double-cage dysprosium cluster [Dy60(H2L1)24(OAc)71(O)5(OH)3(H2O)27]·6H2O·6CH3OH·7CH3CN (Dy60) by using a multidentate chelate-coordinated diacylhydrazone ligand. Two Dy30 cages are included in the Dy60 structure, which are connected via an OAc− moiety. The core of Dy60 is composed of 8 triangular Dy3 and 12-fold linear Dy3 units. We further change the alkali added in the reaction system and successfully obtain a single cage-shaped cluster [Dy30(H2L1)12(OAc)36(OH)4(H2O)12]·2OH·10H2O·12CH3OH·13CH3CN (Dy30) with a perfect spherical cavity, which could be considered an intermediate in Dy60 formation. Time-dependent, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) is used to track the formation of Dy60. A possible self-assembly mechanism is proposed. We track the formation of Dy30 and the six intermediate fragments are screened. High-nuclearity lanthanide clusters can exhibit interesting properties such as magnetism, but the mechanisms by which they assemble are poorly understood. We obtained a binuclear Gd(III) complex [Gd2(L1)2(NO3)4] (1, HL1 = (E)-2-(2-(pyridin-2-ylmethyleneamino)ethoxy)ethanol) by reacting N2O2-tetradentate chelating ligand HL1 with Gd(NO3)3·6H2O at solvothermal temperature of 100 °C. Time-dependent high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) followed the formation of 1 and revealed it's the assembly mechanism: HL1 → Gd(L1) → Gd2(L1)2. When we used the NO2-tridentate chelating ligand HL2 (HL2 = 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanol) under the same reaction conditions, we obtained an "hourglass-like" nonanuclear Gd(III) cluster [Gd9(L2)8(μ3-OH)8(μ4-O)2(NO3)8]·2CH3OH·H2O (2). Their assembly mechanism was proposed: HL2 → Gd(L2) → Gd2(L2)2 → Gd3(L2)3 → Gd4(L2)4 → Gd5(L2)4 → Gd9(L2)8. Most notably, when we used the NO-bidentate chelate ligand HL3 (HL3 = picolinic acid), we obtained a dodecanuclear Gd(III) cluster [Gd12(L3)8(OH)16(NO3)8(OH)4(H2O)4]·22CH3OH·25CH3CN (3) under the same reaction conditions. We found that the formation process of cluster 3 involved two different and mutually interfering self-assembly processes, namely, multitemplate-induced assembly (HL3 → Gd(L3) → Gd2(L3)2 → Gd12(L3)8) and stepwise assembly (HL3 → Gd(L3) → Gd2(L3)2 → Gd3(L3)2 → Gd4(L3)2 → Gd5(L3)2 → Gd6(L3)2 → Gd12(L3)8). X‐ray induced photodynamic therapy (X‐PDT) circumvents the poor penetration depth of conventional PDT with minimal radio‐resistance generation. However, conventional X‐PDT typically requires inorganic scintillators as energy transducers to excite neighboring photosensitizers (PSs) to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, a pure organic aggregation‐induced emission (AIE) nanoscintillator (TBDCR NPs) that can massively generate both type I and type II ROS under direct X‐ray irradiation is reported for hypoxia‐tolerant X‐PDT. Heteroatoms are introduced to enhance X‐ray harvesting and ROS generation ability, and AIE‐active TBDCR exhibits aggregation‐enhanced ROS especially less oxygen‐dependent hydroxyl radical (HO•−, type I) generation ability. TBDCR NPs with a distinctive PEG crystalline shell to provide a rigid intraparticle microenvironment show further enhanced ROS generation. Intriguingly, TBDCR NPs show bright near‐infrared fluorescence and massive singlet oxygen and HO•− generation under direct X‐ray irradiation, which demonstrate excellent antitumor X‐PDT performance both in vitro and in vivo. To the best of knowledge, this is the first pure organic PS capable of generating both 1O2 and radicals (HO•−) in response to direct X‐ray irradiation, which shall provide new insights for designing organic scintillators with excellent X‐ray harvesting and predominant free radical generation for efficient X‐PDT. N-Methylbenzimidazole-2-methanol (L) and Ln(NO3)3·6H2O are dissolved in a mixed solvent of methanol and acetonitrile and then reacted at 80 °C to obtain [Ln3(L)5(NO3)4] (Ln3, Ln = Gd, Tb). In Ln3, three L− are located in the same plane as the three Ln3+ ions, and the other two L− are located above and below the plane, respectively. Two of the four NO3− ions are respectively coordinated with two Ln3+, and the other two are coordinated with one Ln3+ ion, which results in the asymmetry of the above-described triangular shape Ln3. When the Ln3 single crystal was tested by Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry, the main frame [Ln3L5(NO3)3]+ was found to be stable, only one NO3−ion was lost. As the energy of the ion source increases, we observe the gradual fragmentation of the triangular shape Ln3, and propose that the fragmentation mechanism is: Ln3L5 → Ln3L4 → Ln2L4 → Ln2L3 → Ln2L2 → LnL. This provides the basis for the assembly of triangular shaped Ln3 clusters. For the first time, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of triangular Gd3 clusters was studied and it exhibited a large MCE of 10.65 J kg−1 K−1 at 7 K for ΔH = 5 T. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of high-nuclearity clusters of lanthanide usually involves many complicated self-assembly processes. Thus, tracking the formation process is extremely difficult and research on the assembly mechanism is very rare. In this study, a Dy-exclusive nanocluster containing vertex-sharing [Dy4(μ3-OH)4] cubanes, denoted as [Dy12(L)8(OH)16(CH3O)8(H2O)8]·(CH3O)4 (Dy12, L = quinoline-2-carboxylate), was designed and synthesized from L and DyCl3·6H2O. Eight quinoline-2-carboxylate ligands were encapsulated on the periphery of the Dy12 cluster, which served to stabilize the core. The high stability of the Dy12 cluster core was further confirmed by high-resolution electrospray-ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS). With increased ion-source energy, only CH3O− and OH− bridging ligands were replaced inside the Dy12 cluster. Notably, eight intermediate fragments were successfully observed from the Dy12 cluster formation by time-dependent HRESI-MS. First, ligand L captured Dy3+ to give Dy1, which further formed Dy2 through μ2-O bridging. The Dy12 cluster was constructed in one step with four Dy2 and four Dy3+ as templates: L → Dy1→ Dy2→ Dy12. Moreover, a series of Dy3–Dy6 fragment peaks with relatively weak intensities were observed, and an alternative stepwise-assembly route was proposed: L → Dy1→ Dy2→ Dy3→ Dy4→ Dy5→ Dy6→ Dy12. On comparing the two different assembly methods, the multitemplate guided assembly formed Dy12 was found to be dominant. To the best of our knowledge, this study was the first to propose the involvement of two self-assembly mechanisms in the construction of lanthanide clusters, as further confirmed by HRESI-MS. The design and synthesis of lanthanide clusters with novel topological connections and desirable properties are attracting extensive attention. Researchers have obtained numerous types of lanthanide clusters (e.g. , tubular, cage, hamburger, and wheel) and examined their magnetocaloric effect, proton conductivity, sensing ability, applicability to lighting, and molecular magnetism. Despite substantial progress, lanthanide clusters are still primarily designed and synthesized via two common strategies: the ligand-controlled hydrolysis method and the anion-template method supported by carboxylic acid ligands. A detailed analysis of the formation and assembly mechanism would enable precisely controlled synthesis and the rapid development of crystal engineering. However, tracking the assembly process is difficult because both common strategies involve complex reactions with unstable intermediate and final products. Therefore, new guiding strategies for the design and construction of lanthanide clusters are urgently demanded. Bulky multidentate chelating ligands can quickly capture Ln(III) ions in solution, forming relatively stable single-template primitives. In the presence of an anion or specific hydrolyzate, single-template primitives assemble into multicomponent template primitives and then into complex lanthanide clusters (LCs). The intermediate template primitives are stable because the outer chelating ligands tightly wrap the inner metal center; consequently, the obtained LCs are highly stable in solution. These stable template primitives enable the identification of intermediates in the self-assembly process and facilitate the rational design and directed construction of LCs. In addition, the rapid capture of Ln(III) ions by multidentate chelating ligands greatly simplifies the self-assembly process, avoiding the formation of many low-stability, difficult-to-discriminate, chaotic, extremely complex, and diverse Ln(III)-ion hydrolysis intermediates and thereby promoting in-depth analysis of the self-assembly mechanisms (SAMs) of LCs. In recent years, multidentate chelate coordination (MCC) has emerged as a promising method for constructing serial LCs with decipherable SAMs. This review highlights the research progress on SAMs of LCs, focusing on the different SAMs of the hydrolysis method, anion-template method, and MCC method. A new free carbon radical was obtained in a microwave‐assisted solvothermal reaction of the primary amine (1‐methyl‐1H‐benzo[d]imidazol‐2‐yl)methanamine with FeCl3⋅6 H2O in methanol at 140 °C. Through a combination of crystallography and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, the reaction process was studied. The longest domino reaction includes 14 steps and forms up to 12 new covalent bonds (9 C−N and 3 C−C bonds) and 3 five‐membered heterocycles. For the first time, the homolytic cleavage of a C−O bond was used to synthesize a triarylmethyl radical. We enhanced the solid-state luminescence of lanthanoid metal ions within HOFs structured by Schiff base ligands via Zn(II) ion coordination. In addition, LnZn-HOFs can efficiently release Ln(III) ions in aqueous solution to achieve a highly sensitive response to very low concentrations of the heavy metal ion Cu(II). The ion-releasing properties of LnZn-HOFs can effectively inhibit the rapid proliferation of classical Gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Enhancing the antenna effect to increase energy transfer to lanthanoid ions for generating bright luminescence is an effective strategy to construct lanthanoid luminophores with excellent performance. However, the antenna effect often depends on the structure, connection, and configuration of immobilized ligands. We found for the first time that the introduction of the Zn(II) ion coordination can greatly enhance the solid-state fluorescence and phosphorescence emission of lanthanoid hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (Ln-HOFs). Notably, relative to that of Tb-HOF, the solid-state fluorescence intensity, quantum yield, and lifetime of TbZn-HOFs had increased by 17.09, 38.81, and 12.96 times, respectively. The chelating coordination of the Zn(II) ions effectively hindered the vibration of organic ligands to weaken nonradiative transitions and stabilized and reduced the triplet excited state of the ligands through the spin–orbit coupling effect, which led to the increased efficiency of energy transfer with Tb(III) ions. In aqueous solution, LnZn-HOFs released Ln(III) ions effectively and captured low concentrations of the heavy metal ion Cu(II), and the efficient ligand-to-Cu(II) ion energy transfer quenched ligand luminescence. Notably, the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated to be 1.91 nM, which was considerably lower than the maximum level of Cu(II) ions in drinking water (20 μM) specified by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and was better than the LOD of other previously reported probes. Furthermore, LnZn-HOFs can effectively inhibit the proliferation of classical Gram-positive bacteria, such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus , via ion release and thus showed a high sterilization effect.
