Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown remarkable performance across various tasks, but the escalating demands on computational resources pose significant challenges, particularly in the extensive utilization of full fine-tuning for downstream tasks. To address this, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) methods have been developed, but they often underperform compared to full fine-tuning and struggle with memory efficiency. In this work, we introduce Gradient Weight-Normalized Low-Rank Projection (GradNormLoRP), a novel approach that enhances both parameter and memory efficiency while maintaining comparable performance to full fine-tuning. GradNormLoRP normalizes the weight matrix to improve gradient conditioning, facilitating better convergence during optimization. Additionally, it applies low-rank approximations to the weight and gradient matrices, significantly reducing memory usage during training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our 8-bit GradNormLoRP reduces optimizer memory usage by up to 89.5% and enables the pre-training of large LLMs, such as LLaMA 7B, on consumer-level GPUs like the NVIDIA RTX 4090, without additional inference costs. Moreover, GradNormLoRP outperforms existing low-rank methods in fine-tuning tasks. For instance, when fine-tuning the RoBERTa model on all GLUE tasks with a rank of 8, GradNormLoRP achieves an average score of 80.65, surpassing LoRA's score of 79.23. These results underscore GradNormLoRP as a promising alternative for efficient LLM pre-training and fine-tuning. We investigate the combined occurrence of edge faults and vertex faults in the burnt pancake graph (\( BP_n \)). In this paper, we prove that \( BP_n - F \), where \( F \) includes pairs of end-vertices of matching edges and fault-tolerant edges, contains a Hamiltonian cycle when \( |F| \leq n-2 \) and a Hamiltonian path when \( |F| \leq n-3 \). This establishes that \( BP_n \) is \((n-2)\)-hybrid fault Hamiltonian and \((n-3)\)-hybrid fault Hamiltonian connected for \( n \geq 3 \). Evaluating the quality of automatically generated image descriptions is a complex task that requires metrics capturing various dimensions, such as grammaticality, coverage, accuracy, and truthfulness. Although human evaluation provides valuable insights, its cost and time-consuming nature pose limitations. Existing automated metrics like BLEU, ROUGE, METEOR, and CIDEr attempt to fill this gap, but they often exhibit weak correlations with human judgment. To address this challenge, we propose a novel evaluation framework called Image2Text2Image, which leverages diffusion models, such as Stable Diffusion or DALL-E, for text-to-image generation. In the Image2Text2Image framework, an input image is first processed by a selected image captioning model, chosen for evaluation, to generate a textual description. Using this generated description, a diffusion model then creates a new image. By comparing features extracted from the original and generated images, we measure their similarity using a designated similarity metric. A high similarity score suggests that the model has produced a faithful textual description, while a low score highlights discrepancies, revealing potential weaknesses in the model's performance. Notably, our framework does not rely on human-annotated reference captions, making it a valuable tool for assessing image captioning models. Extensive experiments and human evaluations validate the efficacy of our proposed Image2Text2Image evaluation framework. Web attacks are one of the major and most persistent forms of cyber threats, which bring huge costs and losses to web application-based businesses. Various detection methods, such as signature-based, machine learning-based, and deep learning-based, have been proposed to identify web attacks. However, these methods either (1) heavily rely on accurate and complete rule design and feature engineering, which may not adapt to fast-evolving attacks, or (2) fail to estimate model uncertainty, which is essential to the trustworthiness of the prediction made by the model. In this study, we proposed an Uncertainty-aware Ensemble Deep Kernel Learning (UEDKL) model to detect web attacks from HTTP request payload data with the model uncertainty captured from the perspective of both data distribution and model parameters. The proposed UEDKL utilizes a deep kernel learning model to distinguish normal HTTP requests from different types of web attacks with model uncertainty estimated from data distribution perspective. Multiple deep kernel learning models were trained as base learners to capture the model uncertainty from model parameters perspective. An attention-based ensemble learning approach was designed to effectively integrate base learners' predictions and model uncertainty. We also proposed a new metric named High Uncertainty Ratio-F Score Curve to evaluate model uncertainty estimation. Experiments on BDCI and SRBH datasets demonstrated that the proposed UEDKL framework yields significant improvement in both web attack detection performance and uncertainty estimation quality compared to benchmark models.

In the era of large language models, parameter-efficient fine-tuning (PEFT) has been extensively studied. However, these approaches usually rely on the space domain, which encounters storage challenges especially when handling extensive adaptations or larger models. The frequency domain, in contrast, is more effective in compressing trainable parameters while maintaining the expressive capability. In this paper, we propose a novel Selective Discrete Cosine Transformation (sDCTFT) fine-tuning scheme to push this frontier. Its general idea is to exploit the superior energy compaction and decorrelation properties of DCT to improve both model efficiency and accuracy. Specifically, it projects the weight change from the low-rank adaptation into the discrete cosine space. Then, the weight change is partitioned over different levels of the discrete cosine spectrum, and the most critical frequency components in each partition are selected. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior accuracy, reduced computational cost, and lower storage requirements of the proposed method over the prior arts. For instance, when performing instruction tuning on the LLaMA3.1-8B model, sDCTFT outperforms LoRA with just 0.05M trainable parameters compared to LoRA's 38.2M, and surpasses FourierFT with 30\% less trainable parameters. Federated Learning (FL) has garnered widespread adoption across various domains such as finance, healthcare, and cybersecurity. Nonetheless, FL remains under significant threat from backdoor attacks, wherein malicious actors insert triggers into trained models, enabling them to perform certain tasks while still meeting FL's primary objectives. In response, robust aggregation methods have been proposed, which can be divided into three types: ex-ante, ex-durante, and ex-post methods. Given the complementary nature of these methods, combining all three types is promising yet unexplored. Such a combination is non-trivial because it requires leveraging their advantages while overcoming their disadvantages. Our study proposes a novel whole-process certifiably robust aggregation (WPCRA) method for FL, which enhances robustness against backdoor attacks across three phases: ex-ante, ex-durante, and ex-post. Moreover, since the current geometric median estimation method fails to consider differences among clients, we propose a novel weighted geometric median estimation algorithm (WGME). This algorithm estimates the geometric median of model updates from clients based on each client's weight, further improving the robustness of WPCRA against backdoor attacks. We also theoretically prove that WPCRA offers improved certified robustness guarantees with a larger certified radius. We evaluate the advantages of our methods based on the task of loan status prediction. Comparison with baselines shows that our methods significantly improve FL's robustness against backdoor attacks. Image search stands as a pivotal task in multimedia and computer vision, finding applications across diverse domains, ranging from internet search to medical diagnostics. Conventional image search systems operate by accepting textual or visual queries, retrieving the top-relevant candidate results from the database. However, prevalent methods often rely on single-turn procedures, introducing potential inaccuracies and limited recall. These methods also face the challenges, such as vocabulary mismatch and the semantic gap, constraining their overall effectiveness. To address these issues, we propose an interactive image retrieval system capable of refining queries based on user relevance feedback in a multi-turn setting. This system incorporates a vision language model (VLM) based image captioner to enhance the quality of text-based queries, resulting in more informative queries with each iteration. Moreover, we introduce a large language model (LLM) based denoiser to refine text-based query expansions, mitigating inaccuracies in image descriptions generated by captioning models. To evaluate our system, we curate a new dataset by adapting the MSR-VTT video retrieval dataset to the image retrieval task, offering multiple relevant ground truth images for each query. Through comprehensive experiments, we validate the effectiveness of our proposed system against baseline methods, achieving state-of-the-art performance with a notable 10\% improvement in terms of recall. Our contributions encompass the development of an innovative interactive image retrieval system, the integration of an LLM-based denoiser, the curation of a meticulously designed evaluation dataset, and thorough experimental validation.

Dog owners are typically capable of recognizing behavioral cues that reveal subjective states of their dogs, such as pain. But automatic recognition of the pain state is very challenging. This paper proposes a novel video-based, two-stream deep neural network approach for this problem. We extract and preprocess body keypoints, and compute features from both keypoints and the RGB representation over the video. We propose an approach to deal with self-occlusions and missing keypoints. We also present a unique video-based dog behavior dataset, collected by veterinary professionals, and annotated for presence of pain, and report good classification results with the proposed approach. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly emerged as a key disruptive technology in the 21st century. At the heart of modern AI lies Deep Learning (DL), an emerging class of algorithms that has enabled today's platforms and organizations to operate at unprecedented efficiency, effectiveness, and scale. Despite significant interest, IS contributions in DL have been limited, which we argue is in part due to issues with defining, positioning, and conducting DL research. Recognizing the tremendous opportunity here for the IS community, this work clarifies, streamlines, and presents approaches for IS scholars to make timely and high-impact contributions. Related to this broader goal, this paper makes five timely contributions. First, we systematically summarize the major components of DL in a novel Deep Learning for Information Systems Research (DL-ISR) schematic that illustrates how technical DL processes are driven by key factors from an application environment. Second, we present a novel Knowledge Contribution Framework (KCF) to help IS scholars position their DL contributions for maximum impact. Third, we provide ten guidelines to help IS scholars generate rigorous and relevant DL-ISR in a systematic, high-quality fashion. Fourth, we present a review of prevailing journal and conference venues to examine how IS scholars have leveraged DL for various research inquiries. Finally, we provide a unique perspective on how IS scholars can formulate DL-ISR inquiries by carefully considering the interplay of business function(s), application areas(s), and the KCF. This perspective intentionally emphasizes inter-disciplinary, intra-disciplinary, and cross-IS tradition perspectives. In this paper, we propose and analyze high order efficient schemes for the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. The proposed schemes are based on the L1 discretization for the time fractional derivative and the extended scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach developed very recently to deal with the nonlinear terms in the equation. The main contributions of the paper consist in: 1) constructing first and higher order unconditionally stable schemes for different mesh types, and proving the unconditional stability of the constructed schemes for the uniform mesh; 2) carrying out numerical experiments to verify the efficiency of the schemes and to investigate the coarsening dynamics governed by the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. Particularly, the influence of the fractional order on the coarsening behavior is carefully examined. Our numerical evidence shows that the proposed schemes are more robust than the existing methods, and their efficiency is less restricted to particular forms of the nonlinear potentials.
