Understanding of dynamical responses and mechanical characteristics of metals and alloys at high strain rates holds significant importance in fundamental physics and optimizing the performance capabilities of materials. During high-speed impact scenarios, materials may be subjected to high pressure and plastic deformation, which have the potential to modulate their mechanical attributes. In this study, high-speed planar impact experiments were conducted to investigate the progressive alterations in the microstructures and mechanical properties in coarse-grain body-centered cubic (bcc) iron subjected to high-strain-rate (approximately 2.60–3.89 × 106 s−1) impact reaching approximately 15 GPa in a one-stage light-gas gun. The nanoindentation tests show that the nano-hardness of the post-shock iron improves 1.5 times from approximately 1.75–2.70 GPa. Microscopic analyses of the post-shock bcc-iron show no significant grain refinement but a noticeable increase in the twin boundaries (TBs) and low angle grain boundaries (LAGBs) proportion with increasing shock pressure. Therefore, the interaction between TBs, LAGBs, and dislocations in post-shock iron grains plays an important role in mediating its mechanical properties. Our findings serve as possible guidance for exploring the mechanical properties of single-crystalline and poly-crystalline iron-based materials, such as steel, with optimized mechanical performance. Goethite (α-FeOOH), a vital water- and hydrogen-bearing natural mineral, is extensively distributed on the Earth's surface and probably in the lower mantle. Laboratory measurements of its phase transition and sound velocities provide crucial data for a more rational understanding of the deep-water transportation and physical properties of the Earth's interior. Herein, the Hugoniot equation of state and sound velocities of natural goethite up to around 15 GPa are measured by dynamic compression. The discontinuities pertinent to the density and sound velocities of goethite are observed at 7.1 (2) GPa, in which a solid–solid phase transition occurs from α- (Pbnm) to ɛ-FeOOH (P21nm). Through this structural phase transition, the longitudinal and shear wave velocities in order, enhance by about 5% and 12%. We suggest that changes in the sound velocity due to the FeOOH phase transition may contribute to the discontinuity in the subduction zones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the role of water in the crystallization of Earth's early magma ocean and its impact on the formation of the Earth's core-mantle boundary (CMB). The authors propose that the solidification of a water-rich magma ocean may favor the formation of a pyrite-type phase, which has a strong affinity for ferrous iron. This pyrite-type phase, known as Py-phase, can affect the structure and composition of the CMB. The authors suggest that the presence of water in the magma ocean may lead to the formation of Fe-rich Py-phase at the CMB, creating heterogeneities that can be detected through seismology. The electrical conductivity and elasticity of deep hydrous phases are essential to constraining water distribution, as well as deciphering the origins of conductivity anomalies in the lower mantle. To uncover the impact of iron-bearing δ-AlOOH on the geophysical properties of the lower mantle, we carried out synchrotron X‑ray diffraction and electrical conductivity measurements on δ-(Al0.52Fe0.48)OOH and (Al0.95Fe0.05)OOH in diamond-anvil cells at pressures up to 75 GPa at room temperature. A sharp volume reduction of ~6.5% was observed in δ-(Al0.52Fe0.48)OOH across the spin transition at 40.8–43.3 GPa, where its electrical conductivity increases steadily without abrupt changes. The electrical conductiv‑ ity of δ-(Al0.52Fe0.48)OOH is greater than that of pure δ-AlOOH at high pressure, suggesting that both small polaron and proton conduction mechanisms dominate in iron-bearing δ-AlOOH. Furthermore, the high-pressure electrical conductivity profiles are comparable between δ-(Al0.95Fe0.05)OOH and δ-(Al0.52Fe0.48)OOH, indicating that high-iron content only marginally influences the conductivity of iron-bearing δ-AlOOH. Notably, the electrical conductivity of iron-bearing δ-AlOOH along the North Philippine geotherm is greater than the average 1D electrical conductivity profile in the mantle (Ohta et al. 2010a). Earth-abundant antimony trisulfide (Sb2S3), or simply antimonite, is a promising material for capturing natural energies like solar power and heat flux. The layered structure, held up by weak van-der Waals forces, induces anisotropic behaviors in carrier transportation and thermal expansion. Here, we used stress as mechanical stimuli to destabilize the layered structure and observed the structural phase transition to a three-dimensional (3D) structure. We combined in situ x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations to study the evolution of structure and bandgap width up to 20.1 GPa. The optical band gap energy of Sb2S3 followed a two-step hierarchical sequence at approximately 4 and 11 GPa. We also revealed that the first step of change is mainly caused by the redistribution of band states near the conduction band maximum. The second transition is controlled by an isostructural phase transition, with collapsed layers and the formation of a higher coordinated bulky structure. The band gap reduced from 1.73 eV at ambient to 0.68 eV at 15 GPa, making it a promising thermoelectric material under high pressure. Antimonite (Sb2S3) has potential applications for solar energy, but how its layered structure changes under pressure is incompletely understood. This report presents the variations of the electrical conductivity and the migration of natural pyrite impurity levels at temperatures range from 298 to 573 K and pressures range from 1 atm. to 20.9 GPa. The electrical conductivity increases with temperature at a fixed pressure, displaying the semiconductor behavior of the sample. In spite of the positive correlations of electrical conductivity and pressure, there exists an acceleration in the rate of conductivity increase after ~13 GPa. No indication of a chemical reaction or structural phase transition of pyrite was detected by Raman spectroscopy. The main trace elements that affect the electrical properties of pyrite are determined by inductively coupled plasma with mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The transport activation energy of natural pyrite is ~0.045 eV at ambient pressure, which corresponds to the activation of the CoFe donor level (~1/2 ED), and decreases with increasing pressure. A pressure-induced structural phase transition and its intimate link with the superconducting transition was studied for the first time in TiSe 2 up to 40 GPa at room temperature using X-ray diffraction, transport measurement, and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the occurrence of a first-order structural phase transition at 4 GPa from the standard trigonal structure (S.G. P 3̅ m 1) to another trigonal structure (S-G- P 3̅ c 1). Additionally, at 16 GPa, the P 3̅ c 1 phase spontaneously transforms into a monoclinic C 2/ m phase, and above 24 GPa, the C 2/ m phase returns to the initial P 3̅ m 1 phase. Electrical transport results show that metallization occurs above 6 GPa. The charge density wave observed at ambient pressure is suppressed upon compression up to 2 GPa with the emergence of superconductivity at 2.5 GPa, with a critical temperature ( T c ) of 2 K. A structural transition accompanies the emergence of superconductivity that persists up to 4 GPa. The results demonstrate that the pressure-induced phase transitions explored by the experiments along with the theoretical predictions may open the door to a new path for searching and controlling the phase diagrams of transition metal dichalcogenides.
