Abstract

Knowledge of the three-dimensional movement patterns of elasmobranchs is vital to understand their ecological roles and exposure to anthropogenic pressures. To date, comparative studies among species at global scales have mostly focused on horizontal movements. Our study addresses the knowledge gap of vertical movements by compiling the first global synthesis of vertical habitat use by elasmobranchs from data obtained by deployment of 989 biotelemetry tags on 38 elasmobranch species. Elasmobranchs displayed high intra- and interspecific variability in vertical movement patterns. Substantial vertical overlap was observed for many epipelagic elasmobranchs, indicating an increased likelihood to display spatial overlap, biologically interact, and share similar risk to anthropogenic threats that vary on a vertical gradient. We highlight the critical next steps toward incorporating vertical movement into global management and monitoring strategies for elasmobranchs, emphasizing the need to address geographic and taxonomic biases in deployments and to concurrently consider both horizontal and vertical movements.

Abstract

Offshore wind energy development (OWED) is rapidly expanding globally and has the potential to contribute significantly to renewable energy portfolios. However, development of infrastructure in the marine environment presents risks to wildlife. Marine birds in particular have life history traits that amplify population impacts from displacement and collision with offshore wind infrastructure. Here, we present a broadly applicable framework to assess and mitigate the impacts of OWED on marine birds. We outline existing techniques to quantify impactvia monitoring and modeling (e.g., collision risk models, population viability analysis), and present a robust mitigation framework to avoid, minimize, or compensate for OWED impacts. Our framework addresses impacts within the context of multiple stressors across multiple wind energy developments. We also present technological and methodological approaches that can improve impact estimation and mitigation. We highlight compensatory mitigation as a tool that can be incorporated into regulatory frameworks to mitigate impacts that cannot be avoided or minimized via siting decisions or alterations to OWED infrastructure or operation. Our framework is 2intended as a globally-relevant approach for assessing and mitigating OWED impacts on marine birds that may be adapted to existing regulatory frameworks in regions with existing or planned OWED

Abstract

Background and Purpose:  Monteggia fractures can be problematic injuries. The aim of this population-based study is to evaluate the risk of complications according to the Bado types, clinical outcome, and incidence., Methods:  72 children (median age 6, range 2-11 years) with 73 Monteggia fractures treated during 2014-2022 were identified from the institutional fracture register. Timing of diagnosis, complications, and method of treatment were registered. Outcomes were assessed at mean 4 years (1-9) follow-up in 68 (94%) children. The census population (< 16 years old) in Helsinki metropolitan area during the study period was assessed., Results: Bado types I (n = 43) and III (n = 27) comprised all but 3 of the fractures. Diagnosis was made on admission in 57, and with a 1-8-day delay in 16 children. 8 children had sustained an associated nerve injury. 35 children were treated operatively, 7 after failed closed treatment. 4 reoperations were performed, including 3 ulnar osteotomies. The risk of complications (odds ratio [OR] 4.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.7-14) and closed treatment failures (OR 12.3, CI 1.3-118) was higher in Bado type III than in type I injuries. 60 children attended for clinical follow-up, all had congruent radio-humeral joints and full range of elbow and forearm motion. Mean PedsQL was 94 (72-100) and QuickDash 3 (0-13). 8 additional children reported normal elbow functions by phone. The calculated mean annual incidence of Monteggia injuries was 2.9/100,000 children., Conclusion:  Monteggia fractures are rare (2.9/100,000 yearly). Bado type III injuries are associated with a high risk of complications.

On page 1080, in the last sentence of the Results section of the Abstract, the text that had read "0.05% (4 of 777)" now reads "0.5% (4 of 777).", Background: The risk of fracture-related nerve injury associated with forearm fractures in children is unknown. The purposes of the present study were to calculate the risk of fracture-related nerve injury and to report the institutional rate of complications of surgical treatment of pediatric forearm fractures., Methods: Four thousand, eight hundred and sixty-eight forearm fractures (ICD-10 codes S52.0 to S52.7) that had been treated in our tertiary level pediatric hospital between 2014 and 2021 were identified in our institutional fracture registry. Of these, 3,029 fractures occurred in boys and 53 were open fractures. Sex, age at injury, trauma mechanism and energy, fracture type, treatment method, and cause and type of nerve injury were assessed in 43 patients with 44 registered nerve injuries. Patients with nerve injuries were reevaluated to calculate the recovery time. Univariable and multivariable regression analyses were performed to determine the risk of nerve injury., Results: The risk of a fracture-related nerve injury was 0.7% (33 of 4,868). Only 2 injuries were permanent; thus, the risk of permanent nerve injury associated with a forearm fracture was 0.04% (2 of 4,868). The ulnar nerve was affected in 19 cases; the median nerve, in 8; and the radial nerve, in 7. In cases of open fracture, the risk of nerve injury was 17% (9 of 53). Open fractures had an OR of 33.73 (95% CI, 14.97 to 70.68) on univariate analysis and an OR of 10.73 (95% CI 4.50 to 24.22) on multivariate analysis with adjustment for female sex and both-bone diaphyseal fracture. Both-bone diaphyseal fracture (ICD-10 code S52.4) had an OR of 9.01 (95% CI, 4.86 to 17.37) on univariate analysis and an OR of 9.98 (95% CI 5.32 to 19.47) on multivariate analysis with adjustment for age and female sex. Overall, 777 fractures were internally fixed. The risk of nerve injury as a complication of internal fixation was 1.3% (10 of 777). Four of these iatrogenic injuries (including 2 involving the median nerve, 1 involving the ulnar nerve, and 1 involving the radial nerve) were permanent; thus, the risk of permanent nerve injury as a complication of internal fixation was 0.5% (4 of 777)., Conclusions: Nerve injury following a pediatric forearm fracture is rare and has an excellent potential for spontaneous recovery. In the present study, all of the permanent nerve injuries occurred in association with open fractures or as a complication of internal fixation., Level of Evidence: Prognostic Level III .
