Abstract

One of the most serious public health problems in Peru and worldwide is Tuberculosis (TB), which is produced by a bacterium known as Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The purpose of this work is to facilitate and automate the diagnosis of tuberculosis using the MODS method and using lens-free microscopy, as it is easier to calibrate and easier to use by untrained personnel compared to lens microscopy. Therefore, we employed a U-Net network on our collected data set to perform automatic segmentation of cord shape bacterial accumulation and then predict tuberculosis. Abstract

Early diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is known to improve the quality of life of affected individuals. However, diagnosis is often delayed even in wealthier countries including the US, largely due to the fact that gold standard diagnostic tools such as the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R) are time consuming and require expertise to administer. This trend is even more pronounced lower resources settings due to a lack of trained experts. As a result, alternative, less technical methods that leverage the unique ways in which children with ASD react to visual stimulation in a controlled environment have been developed to help facilitate early diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that, when exposed to a video that presents both social and abstract scenes side by side, a child with ASD will focus their attention towards the abstract images on the screen to a greater extent than a child without ASD. Such differential responses make it possible to implement an algorithm for the rapid diagnosis of ASD based on eye tracking against different visual stimuli. Here we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm for gaze prediction using images extracted from a one-minute stimulus video. Our model achieved a high accuracy rate and robustness for prediction of gaze direction with independent persons and employing a different camera than the one used during testing. In addition to this, the proposed algorithm achieves a fast response time, providing a near real-time evaluation of ASD. Abstract

Abstract

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects social interaction and communication of children. The gold standard diagnostic tools are very difficult to use and time consuming. However, diagnostic could be deduced from child gaze preferences by looking a video with social and abstract scenes. In this work, we propose an algorithm based on convolutional neural networks to predict gaze direction for a fast and effective autism diagnosis. Anemia is a major health burden worldwide. Examining the hemoglobin level of blood is an important way to achieve the diagnosis of anemia, but it requires blood drawing and a blood test. In this work we propose a non-invasive, fast, and cost-effective screening test for iron-deficiency anemia in Peruvian young children. Abstract

Most children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), in resource-limited settings (RLS), are diagnosed after the age of four. Our work confirmed and extended results of Pierce that eye tracking could discriminate between typically developing (TD) children and those with ASD. We demonstrated the initial 15 s was at least as discriminating as the entire video. We evaluated the GP-MCHAT-R, which combines the first 15 s of manually-coded gaze preference (GP) video with M-CHAT-R results on 73 TD children and 28 children with ASD, 36-99 months of age. The GP-MCHAT-R (AUC = 0.89 (95%CI: 0.82-0.95)), performed significantly better than the MCHAT-R (AUC = 0.78 (95%CI: 0.71-0.85)) and gaze preference (AUC = 0.76 (95%CI: 0.64-0.88)) alone. This tool may enable early screening for ASD in RLS. Abstract

Anemia is a common problem that affects a significant part of the world's population, especially in impoverished countries. This work aims to improve the accessibility of remote diagnostic tools for underserved populations. Our proposal involves implementing algorithms to estimate hemoglobin levels using images of the eyelid conjunctiva and a calibration label captured with a mid-range cell phone. We propose three algorithms: one for calibration label segmentation, another for palpebral conjunctiva segmentation, and the last one for estimating hemoglobin levels based on the segmented images from the previous algorithms. Experiments were performed using a data set of children's eyelid images and calibration stickers. An L1 norm error of 0.72 g/dL was achieved using the SLIC-GAT model to estimate the hemoglobin level. In conclusion, the integration of these segmentation and regression methods improved the estimation accuracy compared to current approaches, considering that the source of the images was a mid-range commercial camera. The proposed method has the potential for mass screening in low-income rural populations as it is non-invasive, and its simplicity makes it feasible for community health workers with basic training to perform the test. Abstract

Congenital transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi is an important source of new Chagas infections worldwide. The mechanisms of congenital transmission remain poorly understood, but there is evidence that parasite factors are involved. Investigating changes in parasite strain diversity during transmission could provide insight into the parasite factors that influence the process. Here we use amplicon sequencing of a single copy T. cruzi gene to evaluate the diversity of infection in clinical samples from Chagas positive mothers and their infected infants. Several infants and mothers were infected with multiple parasite strains, mostly of the same TcV lineage, and parasite strain diversity was higher in infants than mothers. Two parasite haplotypes were detected exclusively in infant samples, while one haplotype was never found in infants. Together, these data suggest multiple parasites initiate a congenital infection and that parasite factors influence the probability of vertical transmission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
