Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM) processes have proven to be a perfect match for topology optimization (TO), as they are able to realize sophisticated geometries in a unique layer-by-layer manner. From a manufacturing viewpoint, however, there is a significant likelihood of process-related defects within complex geometrical features designed by TO. This is because TO seldomly accounts for process constraints and conditions and is typically perceived as a purely geometrical design tool. On the other hand, advanced AM process simulations have shown their potential as reliable tools capable of predicting various process-related conditions and defects. Thus far, geometry design by topology optimization and multiphysics manufacturing simulations have been viewed as two mostly separate paradigms, whereas one should really conceive them as one holistic computational design tool. More specifically, AM process models provide input to physics-based TO, where consequently, not only the designed component will function optimally, but also will have near-to-minimum manufacturing defects. In this regard, we aim at giving a thorough overview of holistic computational design tool concepts applied within AM. First, literature on TO for performance optimization is reviewed and then the most recent developments within physics-based TO techniques related to AM are covered. Process simulations play a pivotal role in the latter type of TO and serve as additional constraints on top of the primary end-user optimization objectives. As a natural consequence of this, a comprehensive and detailed review of non-metallic and metallic additive manufacturing simulations is performed, where the latter is divided into micro-scale and deposition-scale simulations. Abstract

Deformation and fracture of metal-ceramic composites and coatings under quasistatic tension, compression, shear, and during cooling from the melt to room temperatures are numerically investigated. Dynamic and quasistatic boundary-value problems are solved in twoand three-dimensional formulations by the finite-difference and finite-element methods. Constitutive models include the isotropic hardening of aluminum and fracture of ceramic particles. Composite microstructure is taken into account explicitly. Analysis of the fracture in composites is carried out, with the residual stresses being not taken into consideration. Origination of cracks in the near-interface regions of bulk tension and their propagation in ceramic particles are investigated. Residual stresses formed during cooling of the composites are calculated for different volume fractions of particles.

Abstract

A micromechanical model is developed to predict the deformation behavior of additively manufactured aluminum alloys. Three-dimensional models of grain structures typical for different microregions of the melt pool are generated by the step-by-step packing method. A crystal plasticity-based constitutive model accounting for the elastic-plastic anisotropy of face-centered cubic crystals is employed to simulate the microscale deformation in an additively manufactured aluminum alloy under loading. The grain shape and texture effects on the plastic strain localization patterns are analyzed.

Abstract

The article presents a microstructure-based mechanical model of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) α-titanium representative of the mesoscale and analyzes the contribution of a pyramidal slip to plastic deformation. We discuss the size of a representative volume element (RVE) enabling mesoscale phenomena to be correctly reproduced, focusing on deformation-induced surface roughening (DISR) and plastic strain localization. It is shown that the ignorance of a pyramidal slip in simulations leads to overestimated stress values in an hcp material. A polycrystalline model is capable of reproducing the mesoscale phenomena until plastic strain begins to localize at the length scale comparable to the model size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Polysilazane-based ceramic coatings have ever-increasing applications in critical and high-power engineering. This paper analyzes the effects of the substrate grain size, the curvature of the coating-substrate interface and the pore-free coating layer on the plastic strain localization and fracture of the porous ceramic coating–polycrystalline substrate structures under compressive loading applied to the coated surface. Models for generating pore and polycrystalline structures of the coating and substrate are developed, with the experimentally observed microstructures of the coated steel being taken into account in calculations explicitly as the initial data of the boundary-value problem. Numerical results obtained by the finite-difference method show that the crack-initiation strain depends on the substrate grain size exponentially. A comparison between the models with serrated and plane coating-substrate interfaces suggests that in the former case, coating cracking initiates near the humps of the interface concavities and the top and bottom pore surfaces, while in the latter case, two sites of cracking nucleation can be distinguished, namely, close to the pores – in the fine-grained substrate, and near the coating-substrate interface – in the case of coarse grains. The results indicate that it is preferable to use the coated specimens characterized by a serrated coating-substrate interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article deals with the conception of the new generation foreign language textbook reflecting contemporary challenges in the sphere of higher education. These are integration processes involving globalization and localization, interdisciplinary tendencies, interactive collaborative learning methods, digital technologies, visualization practices. Modern textbook is shown to have become a pedagogical platform that ensures the compatibility of methodological conditions for interconnected learning of receptive and productive types of speech activity: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Integrative approach in the textbook composition is illustrated by inclusion of Russian-English translation exercises and integrated assignments involving reading, watching a video and writing. Interdisciplinary principle is exemplified by the technical English manual combining scientific, technical, and intercultural components variation. Interactive learning methods are shown to trigger teamwork performed in the classroom or in independent mode with the use of digital technologies. It is indicated that numerous computer-assisted language learning tasks are becoming more widely used in modern textbooks, especially those aimed at the content visualization. Abstract

This study focuses on the microstructure evolution in additively manufactured 316 L steel using the modeling framework reproducing the laser powder bed process in a virtual form. The specific microstructure obtained is characterized by two-component Goss and cube texture and consists of both long columnar and fine equiaxed grains. Results show close consistency with the experimental data. Abstract

The Second World War has been mapped politically on the Moscow urban environment since 1943. The article deals with urban triumphal and commemorative forms of Moscow in 1940s–2010s in the context of changes in the political and social background. It analyses the differences of commemorating the war under different political leaders: Josef Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev and in the post-Soviet years. The totalitarian approach meant to elevate the role of Stalin in and after the war, expressed in creating a triumphant style with multiple reproductions of his image as the absolute leader. Khrushchev political “thaw” and Brezhnev’s rule were marked by the erection of common and individual epic monuments, formation of rituals around them, where the images of war were used as an important political capital. Nowadays, the increased role of war memorials is triggered by the complexity in international affairs. The style of contemporary war memorials manifests the trends of postmodernism, which are expressed in a paradox combination of existing mentality, new technologies, historical citations, humor, and humaneness.
