Abstract We demonstrate enhanced acoustic sensing arising from the synergy between resonator-based acoustic sensor and deep learning. We numerically verify that both vibration amplitude and phase are enhanced and preserved at and off the resonance in our compact acoustic sensor housing three cavities. In addition, we experimentally measure the response of our sensor to single-frequency and siren signals, based on which we train convolutional neural networks (CNNs). We observe that the CNN trained by using both amplitude and phase features achieve the best accuracy on predicting the incident direction of both types of signals. This is even though the signals are broadband and affected by noise thought to be difficult for resonators. We attribute the improvement to a complementary effect between the two features enabled by the combination of resonant effect and deep learning. This observation is further supported by comparing to the CNNs trained by the features extracted from signals measured on reference sensor without resonators, whose performances fall far behind. Our results suggest the advantage of this synergetic approach to enhance the sensing performance of compact acoustic sensors on both narrow- and broad-band signals, which paves the way for the development of advanced sensing technology that has potential applications in autonomous driving systems to detect emergency vehicles.

Plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become popular in mountain orchards, but due to the differences in planting structures, the chances of heavy spraying, missed spraying and pesticide drift are increasing. To mitigate the adverse effects of these phenomena, it is necessary to clarify the effective deposition range of aerial spray droplets. This study proposed an effective spray swath determination method for the effective spraying range of mountainous orchards with UAVs equipped with a mist nozzle (bilateral 1% coverage). This approach focused on exploring the effects of flight height (unidirectional flight modes of 2, 3 and 4 m), spray nozzle atomization performance (reciprocating flight modes of 20, 30 and 40 µm) and flight route (treetop flying and inter-row flying) on the spraying range in a mountain setting. In addition, the study analysed the relationship between the droplet-size spectrum and the effective swath position. The results showed that it is feasible to use the bilateral 1% coverage evaluation method to determine the effective spray swath of a UAV adapted with a mist nozzle for aerial operation in a mountainous Nangguo Pear orchard. With the increase in UAV flight height (2–4 m), the effective unidirectional spray swath also increased, and with the increase in atomization level (20–40 μm), the effective reciprocating spray swath showed a decreasing trend. Moreover, the average effective swath width measured by the UAV for treetop flight was greater than that measured for inter-row flight. The study also found that the proportion of small droplets (droplet size less than 100 µm) below the UAV route was lower (approximately 50%) than along the sides of the route (approximately 80%), and the spray swath was not symmetrically distributed along the flight route but shifted laterally by approximately 3 to 4 m in the downhill direction.

ObjectiveWhile hypertension is a well-recognized risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the specific roles of various common blood pressure measurements [diastolic blood pressure (DBP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), pulse pressure (PP), mean arterial pressure (MAP)] in detecting NAFLD and evaluating the associated risk in adults remain unclear.MethodsA retrospective analysis was conducted on 14,251 adult participants undergoing health screenings in the NAfld in the Gifu Area, Longitudinal Analysis project (NAGALA). Following the Z-transformation of the independent variables, we evaluated the relationships between the four blood pressure indices and NAFLD through multivariable logistic regression models. This analysis documented the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for each standard deviation (SD) increase. Additionally, the effectiveness of these indices in identifying NAFLD was comparatively analyzed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves.ResultsAfter adequately adjusting for confounders, all blood pressure indices except PP showed a positive correlation with NAFLD. For each SD increment, MAP had the strongest association with NAFLD compared to SBP and DBP. This finding was confirmed in populations without exercise habits, under 60 years of age, with normal blood pressure, and in non-obese groups. Furthermore, based on ROC analysis, MAP was found to have the highest accuracy in identifying NAFLD compared to the other three blood pressure indices.ConclusionAmong the four blood pressure indices evaluated, MAP demonstrates the greatest efficacy in identifying NAFLD and assessing its associated risk. These findings underscore the potential of MAP as the most promising blood pressure index for screening NAFLD.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) granular fertilizer spreading technology has been gradually applied in agricultural production. However, in the process of spreading operation, the actual influence effect of each factor in field operation is still unclear. Based on the self-developed UAV fertilizer spreading system, this paper explores the effects of three factors, the baffle retraction (B), spreading disc speed (D), and UAV flight altitude (H), on the granular fertilizer spreading effect in the actual field scenarios through the orthogonal test and taking the coefficient of variation (Cv) and relative error of fertilizer application rate (λ) as the evaluation indexes. The results showed that the optimal factor level combination of Cv was 11.23 % for BbDbHa (the baffle retraction is 6 %, spreading disc speed is 600r/min, and UAV flight height is 1.5 m) at UAV flight speed of 2 m/s. The best factor level combination for λ was BbDbHb of 7.99 % (the baffle retraction is 6 %, spreading disc speed is 600r/min, and UAV flight height is 2 m). In addition, by analysing the influence of the weather and the vortex of the rice canopy on the actual spreading effect, it was found that the weather has less influence on the spreading effect of this system, while the vortex caused by the airflow of the UAV rotor has a certain influence on the spreading effect, which is also relatively easy to ignore in fertilizer spreading operations. The results of the study can be used to explore the operational effects of actual fertilizer application by UAVs in rice field, which will help promote the development of UAV spreading technology and provide a reference for precision fertilizer application through agricultural aviation.

Abstract The USP19 deubiquitinase is found in a locus associated with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), interacts with chaperonins, and promotes secretion of α-synuclein (α-syn) through the misfolding-associated protein secretion (MAPS) pathway. Since these processes might modulate the processing of α-syn aggregates in PD, we inactivated USP19 (KO) in mice expressing the A53T mutation of α-syn and in whom α-syn preformed fibrils (PFF) had been injected in the striatum. Compared to WT, KO brains showed decreased accumulation of phospho-synuclein (pSyn) positive aggregates. This improvement was associated with less activation of microglia and improved performance in a tail-suspension test. Exposure of primary neurons from WT and KO mice to PFF in vitro also led to decreased accumulation of pSyn aggregates. KO did not affect uptake of PFF nor propagation of aggregates in the cultured neurons. We conclude that USP19 instead modulates intracellular dynamics of aggregates. At an early time following PFF injection when the number of pSyn-positive neurons were similar in WT and KO brains, the KO neurons contained less aggregates. KO brain aggregates stained more intensely with anti-ubiquitin antibodies. Immunoprecipitation of soluble proteins from WT and KO brains with antibodies to pSyn showed higher levels of ubiquitinated oligomeric species in the KO samples. We propose that the improved pathology in USP19 KO brains may arise from decreased formation or enhanced clearance of the more ubiquitinated aggregates and/or enhanced disassembly towards more soluble oligomeric species. USP19 inhibition may represent a novel therapeutic approach that targets the intracellular dynamics of α-syn complexes.

Oxidation reaction in food is related to chronic diseases and rancidity, shortening the nutritional value and shelf life of products. In recent advances, the amino acid, sort order and spatial conformation of the antioxidant peptides is wildly reported. The structure-function relationship of antioxidant peptides has become the main factors on the determination of the antioxidant mechanisms. However, compared with the significant antioxidant effect of the peptides from land animals, such structure-function relationship of the antioxidant peptides in the fish, which is rich in proteins, is seldom reported. Therefore, antioxidant mechanisms of the peptides from fish, such as scavenging the intracellular reactive oxygen species in vivo, scavenging the free radicals in vitro and chelating the pro-oxidant metal ions is summarized in this review. The structure-function relationship between the primary structure and secondary structure on the antioxidant activity of fish peptides is provided. Moreover, the effects of non-polar amino acids, polar uncharged amino acids, polar positively charged amino acids and polar negatively charged amino acids are further reviewed. The review would provide a guide for the application of antioxidant peptides, and expand the food market for such products.

Caspase-8, a member of the caspase family, is an initiating caspase and plays a crucial role in apoptosis. In this study, the full-length cDNA of caspase8-like (CASP8-like) was isolated from Crassostrea hongkongensis (C. hongkongensis) by RACE-PCR. ChCASP8-like contained a 1599-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding 533 amino acids with two conserved death effector domains (DEDs) and a cysteine aspartase cysteine structural domain (CASc). Amino acid sequence comparison showed that ChCASP8-like shared the highest identity (85.4%) with CASP8-like of C. angulata. The tissue expression profile showed that ChCASP8-like was constitutively expressed in gills, hepatopancreas, mantle, adductor muscle, hemocytes and gonads, and was significantly upregulated in hemocytes, hepatopancreas and gills under hyper-salinity stress. The apoptosis-related genes, including ATR, CHK1, BCL-XL, CASP8-like, CASP9 and CASP3, were significantly activated by hyper-salinity stress, but were remarkably inhibited by ChCASP8-like silencing. The caspase 8 activity was increased by 1.7-fold after hyper-salinity stress, and was inhibited by 9.4% by ChCASP8-like silencing. Moreover, ChCASP8-like silencing clearly alleviated the apoptosis resulting from hyper-salinity stress. These results collectively demonstrated that ChCASP8-like played a crucial role in inducing apoptosis against hyper-salinity stress.

Rhodium-catalyzed cycloaddition reactions are a powerful tool for the construction of polycyclic compounds. Combined experimental and DFT studies were used to investigate the temperature-controlled chemoselectivity of cationic rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular cycloaddition reactions of ene-vinylidenecyclopropanes. After a series of mechanistic studies, it was found that trace amounts of water in the reaction system play an important role in generating the product with endo double bond located on a five-membered ring and revealed that trace amounts of water in the reaction system, including the rhodium catalyst, substrate and solvent, were sufficient to promote the formation of the product with endo double bond located on a five-membered ring, and additional water could not further accelerate the reaction. DFT calculation results show that the addition of water indeed significantly lowers the energy barrier of the proton transfer step, making the formation of the product with endo double bond located on a five-membered ring more likely to occur and confirming the rationality of water-assisted proton transfer occurring in the selective access to the product with endo double bond located on a five-membered ring.

The tuberculosis (TB) burden remains a significant global public health concern, especially in less developed countries. While pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) is the most common form of the disease, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, particularly intestinal TB (ITB), which is mostly secondary to PTB, is also a significant issue. With the development of sequencing technologies, recent studies have investigated the potential role of the gut microbiome in TB development. In this review, we summarized studies investigating the gut microbiome in both PTB and ITB patients (secondary to PTB) compared with healthy controls. Both PTB and ITB patients show reduced gut microbiome diversity characterized by reduced Firmicutes and elevated opportunistic pathogens colonization; Bacteroides and Prevotella were reported with opposite alteration in PTB and ITB patients. The alteration reported in TB patients may lead to a disequilibrium in metabolites such as short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, which may recast the lung microbiome and immunity via the “gut-lung axis”. These findings may also shed light on the colonization of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the gastrointestinal tract and the development of ITB in PTB patients. The findings highlight the crucial role of the gut microbiome in TB, particularly in ITB development, and suggest that probiotics and postbiotics might be useful supplements in shaping a balanced gut microbiome during TB treatment.

Accurate brain tissue extraction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is crucial for analyzing brain structure and function. While several conventional tools have been optimized to handle human brain data, there have been no generalizable methods to extract brain tissues for multimodal MRI data from rodents, nonhuman primates, and humans. Therefore, developing a flexible and generalizable method for extracting whole brain tissue across species would allow researchers to analyze and compare experiment results more efficiently. Here, we propose a domain-adaptive and semi-supervised deep neural network, named the Brain Extraction Net (BEN), to extract brain tissues across species, MRI modalities, and MR scanners. We have evaluated BEN on 18 independent datasets, including 783 rodent MRI scans, 246 nonhuman primate MRI scans, and 4601 human MRI scans, covering five species, four modalities, and six MR scanners with various magnetic field strengths. Compared to conventional toolboxes, the superiority of BEN is illustrated by its robustness, accuracy, and generalizability. Our proposed method not only provides a generalized solution for extracting brain tissue across species but also significantly improves the accuracy of atlas registration, thereby benefiting the downstream processing tasks. As a novel fully automated deep-learning method, BEN is designed as an open-source software to enable high-throughput processing of neuroimaging data across species in preclinical and clinical applications.

Metamaterials and metasurfaces have been widely developed recently for extraordinary acoustic and elastic wave control at a deep subwavelength scale. Perfect wave absorption as an extreme case to totally absorb the impinged waves has gained great attention, whereas most existing designs based on local resonance lack tunabilities, making perfect absorption be observed at a single frequency. To overcome this drawback, in this work, we design and fabricate a tunable inductance-resistance (LR) shunted mechanical resonator via a bonded piezoelectric patch for perfect flexural wave absorption at low frequency. The LR shunted absorber could be reconfigured to a broad frequency range for perfect flexural wave absorption. The tunable perfect absorption performances are validated through experiments and unit absorption is achieved in experiments. In the end, to further highlight the advantages of shunted damping we numerically demonstrate that the absorption spectrum could be enhanced to broadband absorption with a negative capacitance and an inductance-resistance circuit (NC-LR) connected in parallel. The approach proposed provides an alternative solution to achieve perfect wave absorption in the low-frequency range and enables practical application in complex engineering structures.

The centrosome regulates mammalian meiosis by affecting recombination, synapsis, chromosome segregation, and spermiogenesis. Cep72 is one of the critical components of the centrosome. However, the physiological role of Cep72 in spermatogenesis and fertility remains unclear. In this study, we identify Cep72 as a testis-specific expression protein. Although Cep72 knockout mice were viable and fertile, their sperms were morphologically abnormal with incomplete flagellum structures. Transcriptome analysis reveals significant differences in six genes (Gm49527, Hbb-bt, Hba-a2, Rps27a-ps2, Gm29647, and Gm8430), which were not previously associated with spermatogenesis. Overall, these results indicate that Cep72 participates in regulating sperm morphology and yet is dispensable for fertility in mice.

Coupled resonance enables many intriguing physical phenomena, leading to wave control and sensing. This review discusses fundamental understanding of coupled resonance by providing detailed comparison between lumped parameter-based models including coupled mode theory (CMT) and harmonic oscillator model (HOM). While reviewing recent progress in research concerning coupled resonance, emerging research areas related to coupled resonance are discussed.

The use and transformation of land by humans are the main cause of the increase in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Using land-use data and socioeconomic statistics for 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018, this study examines the carbon emissions from land use and their intensity in the entire Yangtze River Delta Region. We constructed a spatial correlation network of land-use carbon emissions by using a modified gravity model to analyze the characteristics of the spatial correlations and spillover effects of land-use carbon emissions. Results reveal that: (1) the spatial differences in land-use carbon emissions gradually increased, whereas those in land-use carbon emission intensity gradually narrowed from 1995 to 2018; (2) the high-degree centrality of Shanghai, Wuxi, and Suzhou indicated that they had always played leading roles in the network from 1995 to 2018. Moreover, Shanghai and Wuxi had large land-use carbon radiation ranges and together with Suzhou, Hangzhou, Changzhou, and Nanjing, exhibited above-average betweenness centrality from 1995 to 2018 and strong bridging capabilities across the entire network; (3) the land-use carbon emissions had obvious spatial correlations and spillover effects. Our results can provide a scientific basis from an urban agglomeration perspective for the transformation of China’s current economy into a low-carbon one, as well as the realization of regionally differentiated and coordinated emission reduction.

Metabolic diseases characterized by dyslipidemia are common health problems for elderly populations. Dietary fiber intake is inversely associated with the risk of dyslipidemia. This study investigated the effects of Portulaca oleracea polysaccharide (POP) on the intestinal microbiota and its metabolites in aging rats using 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics techniques. Our results showed that POPs reduced the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B), relative abundance of Fusobacteria, and levels of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT) in the serum of aging rats. POP supplementation also reduced 5beta-cholestane-3alpha,7alpha,12alpha,25-tetrol, and vaccenic acid concentrations in lipids and lipoid-like molecules, while soyasapogenol E and monoacylglycerol (MG) (24:0/0:0/0:0) levels increased. This study demonstrated that POP’s beneficial effects on lipid levels in aging rats might be partially attributable to the modification of gut microbiota and related metabolites.

Studying complex pore structures and fractal characteristics of gas shale provides significant guidance for clarifying the mechanism of shale gas accumulation and realizing its efficient development. In this paper, 12 samples of Taiyuan Formation shale are used as the research object, and the fractal theory is combined with mercury intrusion porosimetry and N2 adsorption technology to innovatively solve the problem of splicing point selection, which can reveal the full-scale pore size distribution of shale. The results demonstrate that the most common types of pores in the chosen samples are pores between or within clay minerals, micropores and mesopores inside organic matter, and microfractures, based on scanning electron microscopy imagery analyses. The pores of shale samples have fractal geometries. The fractal dimension DM1 values in the mercury intrusion porosimetry experiments range from 2.3060 to 2.6528. Two fractal dimensions, DN1 and DN2, may be obtained using the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill fractal method. DN1 values vary from 2.4780 to 2.6387, whereas DN2 values range from 2.5239 to 2.7388. Most macropores in shale samples have a size range of about 0.2 mm, with a wide pore size distribution, and the largest peak of the micro-mesopore volume is generally about 50 nm. The fractal dimension correlates positively with the corresponding pore volume, although the correlation between volume and composition is weak. The relatively strong correlation between fractals and the basic compositions of shale proves the fractal theory’s relevance in defining pore inhomogeneity. This study would contribute to the development of a fractal perspective-based method for pore splicing while also expanding our understanding of pore morphology and structure in transitional shale.

BackgroundChronic autoimmune gastritis (CAG) refers to chronic atrophic gastritis due to autoimmunity. Loss of gastric glands in CAG results in hypergastrinemia and achlorhydria leading to Vitamin B12 deficiency and hyperplasia of G cells and enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells. Vitamin B12 deficiency could cause pernicious anemia and subacute combined degeneration, while G cells and ECL cells hyperplasia might develop gastric neuroendocrine tumor (G-NET).Case PresentationA 35-year-old Chinese female presented with multi-focal type-1 Grade 2 (G2) NETs with a 14-year history of pernicious anemia and subacute combined degeneration.ConclusionHere, we report a rare case of a Chinese patient presenting G-NET combined with pernicious anemia and subacute combined degeneration, which are secondary to chronic autoimmune gastritis. This case also illustrates the importance of routine gastroscopy in patients with Vitamin B12 deficiency.

Summary: The respective value of clinical data and CT examinations in predicting COVID-19 progression is unclear, because the CT scans and clinical data previously used are not synchronized in time. To address this issue, we collected 119 COVID-19 patients with 341 longitudinal CT scans and paired clinical data, and we developed an AI system for the prediction of COVID-19 deterioration. By combining features extracted from CT and clinical data with our system, we can predict whether a patient will develop severe symptoms during hospitalization. Complementary to clinical data, CT examinations show significant add-on values for the prediction of COVID-19 progression in the early stage of COVID-19, especially in the 6th to 8th day after the symptom onset, indicating that this is the ideal time window for the introduction of CT examinations. We release our AI system to provide clinicians with additional assistance to optimize CT usage in the clinical workflow.

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder including two genetically and clinically distinct forms: autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and isolated polycystic liver disease (PCLD). The main manifestation of ADPKD is kidney cysts, while PCLD has predominantly liver presentations with mild or absent kidney cysts. Over the past decade, PRKCSH, SEC63, ALG8, and LRP5 have been candidate genes of PCLD. Recently, more candidate genes such as GANAB, SEC61B, and ALR9 were also reported in PCLD patients. This review focused on all candidate genes of PCLD, including the newly established novel candidate genes. In addition, we also discussed some other genes which might also contribute to the disease.

BackgroundAdenosine-to-inosine RNA editing (ATIRE) is increasingly being used to characterize cancer. However, no studies have been conducted to identify an ATIRE signature for predicting cancer survival.MethodsBreast cancer (BRCA) samples with ATIRE profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas were divided into training (n = 452) and internal validation cohorts (n = 311), and 197 additional BRCA patients were recruited as an external validation cohort. The ATIRE signature for BRCA overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were identified using forest algorithm analysis and experimentally verified by direct sequencing. An ATIRE-based risk score (AIRS) was established with these selected ATIRE sites. Significantly prognostic factors were incorporated to generate a nomogram that was evaluated using Harrell’s C-index and calibration plot for all cohorts.ResultsSeven ATIRE sites were revealed to be associated with both BRCA OS and DFS, of which four sites were experimentally confirmed. Patients with high AIRS displayed a higher risk of death than those with low AIRS in the training (hazard ratio (HR) = 3.142, 95%CI = 1.932–5.111), internal validation (HR = 2.097, 95%CI = 1.123–3.914), and external validation cohorts (HR = 2.680, 95%CI = 1.000–7.194). A similar hazard effect of high AIRS on DFS was also observed. The nomogram yielded Harrell’s C-indexes of 0.816 (95%CI = 0.784–0.847), 0.742 (95%CI = 0.684–0.799), and 0.869 (95%CI = 0.835–0.902) for predicting OS and 0.767 (95%CI = 0.708–0.826), 0.684 (95%CI = 0.605–0.763), and 0.635 (95%CI = 0.566–0.705) for predicting DFS in the three cohorts.ConclusionAIRS nomogram could help to predict OS and DFS of patients with BRCA.

In order to analyze the impact of multisource vibration on the imaging quality of aerospace optical payload during camera scanning, a dynamic imaging quality degradation model fused with satellite vibration filter templates is established. Firstly, according to the motion scanning process of the TDI camera, a filter template combining the amplitude and frequency of the vibration source is designed; Secondly, a piecewise function of satellite vibration with a frequency range of 1 Hz to 1000 Hz is obtained by curve fitting, and the amplitudes of different frequency ranges are brought into the image filter template to simulate the output image affected by the vibration. Finally, the output degraded image is analyzed through structural similarity and mean square error. The simulation results show that during the imaging process of the aerospace scanning mirror, the line frequency of the camera changes regularly with the scanning speed. When platform vibration frequency is similar to the camera’s exposure frequency, it will have a large impact on image quality. Therefore, when the camera’s exposure frequency is 110 Hz, vibration at a frequency of 110 Hz will further degrade the image quality. This article is expected to provide guidance for spatial vibration suppression and image quality degradation assessment in the imaging process of aerospace scanning mirrors.

Ferroptosis and iron-related redox imbalance aggravate traumatic brain injury (TBI) outcomes. NRF2 is the predominant transcription factor regulating oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in TBI, but its role in iron-induced post-TBI damage is unclear. We investigated ferroptotic neuronal damage in the injured cortex and observed neurological deficits post-TBI. These were ameliorated by the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) in wild-type mice. In Nrf2-knockout (Nrf2−/−) mice, more sever ferroptosis and neurological deficits were detected. Dimethyl fumarate (DMF)-mediated NRF2 activation alleviated neural dysfunction in TBI mice, partly due to TBI-induced ferroptosis mitigation. Additionally, FTH-FTL and FSP1 protein levels, associated with iron metabolism and the ferroptotic redox balance, were highly NRF2-dependent post-TBI. Thus, NRF2 is neuroprotective against TBI-induced ferroptosis through both the xCT-GPX4- and FTH-FTL-determined free iron level and the FSP1-regulated redox status. This yields insights into the neuroprotective role of NRF2 in TBI-induced neuronal damage and its potential use in TBI treatment.

Human societal growth has greatly pressured available land resources. The key to reducing land pressure and fostering regional synergistic development is revealing the transmission effect of land pressure. We used a modified gravity model to construct a spatial correlation network (SCN) of the land pressure in the Yangtze River Delta region (YRDR) for the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2020. To examine how the land pressure is transmitted throughout the cities in the YRDR, we used a social network analysis to examine the overall network structure, individual network characteristics and spatial clustering characteristics. Finally, the center of gravity-GTWR model that coupled the inter-city interactions and the temporal non-smoothness further revealed the spatiotemporal evolution and the different patterns of the influencing factors. The results revealed that (1) the spatial correlation structure of the land pressure in the YRDR was relatively stable. Nanjing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Changzhou played a significant role as linkages. (2) The YRDR was beyond the geographical limit for the land pressure transmission effect and each block had a considerable and mostly steady transmission impact. (3) The center of gravity-GTWR model that coupled the inter-city interactions and the temporal non-stationarity was a viable method for analyzing the factors that influence the land pressure. (4) There were significant regional and temporal variations in the factors influencing land pressure. The influencing factors differed in intensity and direction from city to city. Our results can provide a new perspective on relieving land pressure from the perspective of urban agglomerations and help accomplish the sustainable development of regional land resources.

Ovarian cancer cells often metastasize to the peritoneal cavity, forming spheroid-like structures and promoting a highly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Here, the authors show that the ubiquitin ligase UBR5 is required for ovarian cancer growth and metastasis, sustaining spheroid formation and the infiltration of immunosuppressive tumor associated macrophages.

Mammalian spermatogenesis is a highly ordered process that is determined by chromatin-associated moderators which still remain poorly understood. Through a multi-control group proteomics strategy, we confirmed that Sugp2 was a chromatin-associated candidate protein, and its signal arose along spermatogenesis. The expression results showed that Sugp2, which is mainly expressed in the testis, had two transcripts, encoding one protein. During spermatogenesis, Sugp2 was enriched in the nucleus of male germ cells. With the depletion of Sugp2 by CRISPER-Cas9 technology, we found that Sugp2 controlled a network of genes on metal ion and ATP binding, suggesting that alternative splicing regulation by Sugp2 is involved in cellular ion and energy metabolism during spermatogenesis, while it had a little effect on meiotic progression and male fertility. Collectively, these data demonstrated that, as a chromatin-associated protein, Sugp2 mediated the alternative splicing regulatory network during spermatogenesis.

Carbon emissions (CE) in Anhui Province are closely related to carbon emissions from industrial land (CEIL). In this study, based on industrial land, industrial energy consumption, and related statistical data in Anhui Province from 2000 to 2016, the carbon emissions coefficient method and the standard deviational ellipse were used to measure and analyze the CEIL and their spatial and temporal evolution characteristics, aiming to provide a basis for the relevant government departments to formulate CE policies. The main results showed that: (1) The total amount of CEIL followed an inverted U-shaped trend of rapid increase followed by a decrease, while the overall carbon emission intensity from industrial land (CEIIL) followed a downward trend. (2) The CE had an evident spatial differentiation, with those from resource-based cities being much higher than those of industrial and tourism-based cities; (3) The overall pattern of CEIL in Anhui Province showed that the increase in the north-south direction is significantly higher than that in the east-west direction, and mainly expanded in the north-south direction. The overall industrial growth rate of Southern Anhui, represented by the Wanjiang City Belt, was higher than that of Northern Anhui, although its CEIL center showed to move towards Northern Anhui.

High-quality urban green space supports the healthy functioning of urban ecosystems. This study aimed to rapidly assess the distribution, and accurately estimate the above-ground biomass, of urban green space using remote sensing methods, thus providing a better understanding of the urban ecological environment in Xuzhou for more effective management. We performed urban green space classifications and compared the performance of Sentinel-2 MSI data and Sentinel-1 SAR data and combinations, for estimating above-ground biomass, using field data from Xuzhou, China. The results showed the following: (1) incorporating an object-oriented method and random forest algorithm to extract urban green space information was effective; (2) compared with stepwise regression models with single-source data, biomass estimation models based on multi-source data provide higher estimation accuracy (R2 = 0.77 for coniferous forest, R2 = 0.76 for shrub-grass vegetation, R2 = 0.75 for broadleaf forest); and (3) from 2016 to 2021, urban green space coverage in Xuzhou decreased, while the total above-ground biomass increased, with higher average above-ground biomass in broadleaf forests (133.71 tons/ha) compared to coniferous forests (92.13 tons/ha) and shrub-grass vegetation (21.65 tons/ha). Our study provides an example of automated classification and above-ground biomass mapping for urban green space using multi-source data and facilitates urban eco-management.

The segmentation of high-grade gliomas (HGG) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data is clinically meaningful in neurosurgical practice, but a challenging task. Currently, most segmentation methods are supervised learning with labeled training sets. Although these methods work well in most cases, they typically require time-consuming manual labeling and pre-trained models. In this work, we propose an automatically unsupervised segmentation toolbox based on the clustering algorithm and morphological processing, named AUCseg. With our toolbox, the whole tumor was first extracted by clustering on T2-FLAIR images. Then, based on the mask acquired with whole tumor segmentation, the enhancing tumor was segmented on the post-contrast T1-weighted images (T1-CE) using clustering methods. Finally, the necrotic regions were segmented by morphological processing or clustering on T2-weighted images. Compared with K-means, Mini-batch K-means, and Fuzzy C Means (FCM), the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) clustering performs the best in our toolbox. We did a multi-sided evaluation of our toolbox in the BraTS2018 dataset and demonstrated that the whole tumor, tumor core, and enhancing tumor can be automatically segmented using default hyper-parameters with Dice score 0.8209, 0.7087, and 0.7254, respectively. The computing time of our toolbox for each case is around 22 seconds, which is at least 3 times faster than other state-of-the-art unsupervised methods. In addition, our toolbox has an option to perform semi-automatic segmentation via manually setup hyper-parameters, which could improve the segmentation performance. Satellite vibration is an important factor that can seriously reduce the image quality of remote sensing imaging. In this paper, the influence of the random vibration of the payload on the frame-by-frame imaging quality of the area-array CMOS camera is studied. Firstly, the mode of the camera’s dynamic frame-by-frame imaging is established; secondly, the curvature mapping function between the ground and camera focal planes is derived based on the invariance of the field of view (FOV). The frequency domain-filtered template of random vibration is constructed. Then, the distortion and degradation images, of single-frame images at different attitude angles, are inversed; finally, the influence of attitude angle, exposure time, and the error of velocity, caused by random vibrations on dynamic frame-by-frame imaging, are analyzed. The simulation results show that the degree of image edge distortion gets larger when the attitude angle increases from 0° to 50°. At the same time, the MTF decreases rapidly with the increase of the error of velocity and the attitude angle. Meanwhile, when the output-image SSIM decreases by 0.1, the MSE increases by 18.5. The experimental results show that the field of view (FOV) of dynamic imaging should be reasonably set, and the error of velocity should be effectively reduced to obtain high-quality remote sensing images.

ABSTRACT xCT forms part of the xc− cysteine-glutamate antiporter which inhibits antimicrobial inflammatory immune functions and thus increases susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB). However, the associations between xCT gene polymorphisms and susceptibility to TB, as well as whether these modulate xCT expression or affect treatment with the xCT inhibitor sulfasalazine (SASP), are unclear. In the present study, we genotyped xCT polymorphisms in a large Chinese cohort and found that the single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs13120371 was associated with susceptibility to TB. The rs13120371 AA genotype was strongly associated with an increased risk of TB and increased xCT mRNA expression levels compared to those with the GG or AG genotype. rs13120371 is located on the 3′ untranslated (UTR) region of the xCT gene, in the putative binding site for miR-142-3p, and the results of luciferase reporter assays indicated that the rs13120371 AA genotype inhibited the binding of miR-42-3p to xCT. Bacterial burden was also significantly higher in cells with the AA genotype than in those with the GG genotype. Furthermore, pretreatment with SASP alleviated this burden in cells with the AA genotype but conferred no benefit in cells with the GG phenotype. In summary, we identified a functional SNP (rs13120371) in the xCT 3′ UTR region that increases susceptibility to TB through interacting with miR-142-3p. IMPORTANCE Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent globally, and the development of multidrug resistance represents a serious health concern, particularly in the developing world. Novel effective treatments are urgently required. xCT expression is known to increase susceptibility to TB, and certain polymorphisms in the gene encoding this protein interrupt the binding of microRNA and prevent its suppression. Taking advantage of the FDA approval for the use of sulfasalazine (SASP), which inhibits xCT-mediated cystine transport in humans, we demonstrate how host genotype-specific therapies tailored to the xCT genotype can improve TB outcomes.

Characterizing urban expansion patterns is of great significance to planning and decision-making for urban agglomeration development. This study examined the urban expansion in the entire Yangtze River Delta Region (YRDR) with its land-use data of six years (1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2018). On the basis of traditional methods, we comprehensively considered the four aspects of urban agglomeration: expansion speed, expansion difference, expansion direction, and landscape pattern, as well as the interconnection of and difference in the expansion process between each city. The spatiotemporal heterogeneity of urban expansion development in this region was investigated by using the speed and differentiation indices of urban expansion, gravity center migration, landscape indices, and spatial autocorrelations. The results show that: (1) over the 23 years, the expansion of built-up land in the Yangtze River Delta Region was significant, (2) the rapidly expanding cities were mainly located along the Yangtze River and coastal areas, while the slowly expanding cities were mainly located in the inland areas, (3) the expansion direction of each city varied and the gravity center of the urban agglomeration moved toward the southwest, and (4) the spatial structure of the region became more clustered, the shape of built-up land turned simpler, and fragmentation decreased. This study unravels the spatiotemporal change of urban expansion patterns in this large urban agglomeration, and more importantly, can serve as a guide for formulating urban agglomeration development plans.

Population data are key indicators of policymaking, public health, and land use in urban and ecological systems; however, traditional censuses are time-consuming, expensive, and laborious. This study proposes a method of modelling population density estimations based on remote sensing data in Hefei. Four models with impervious surface (IS), night light (NTL), and point of interest (POI) data as independent variables are constructed at the township scale, and the optimal model was applied to pixels to obtain a finer population density distribution. The results show that: (1) impervious surface (IS) data can be effectively extracted by the linear spectral mixture analysis (LSMA) method; (2) there is a high potential of the multi-variable model to estimate the population density, with an adjusted R2 of 0.832, and mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.420 from 10-fold cross validation recorded; (3) downscaling the predicted population density from the township scale to pixels using the multi-variable stepwise regression model achieves a more refined population density distribution. This study provides a promising method for the rapid and effective prediction of population data in interval years, and data support for urban planning and population management.

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most diagnosed cancers worldwide and is the second cause of cancer related death in women. The most frequent cause of BC-related deaths, like many cancers, is metastasis. However, metastasis is a complicated and poorly understood process for which there is a shortage of accurate prognostic indicators and effective treatments. With the rapid and ever-evolving development and application of genomic sequencing technologies, many novel molecules were identified that play previously unappreciated and important roles in the various stages of metastasis. In this review, we summarize current advancements in the functional genomic analysis of BC metastasis and discuss about the potential prognostic and therapeutic implications from the recent genomic findings.

In this study, we assembled a complete 16,143 bp mitochondrial genome for Chorthippus fallax (Zuboxsky), which encodes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNAs, 12S and 16S rRNAs and a 722 bp D-loop in the characteristic arrangement of superfamily Acrididae. The most common start codon for 13 PCGs is ATG and the most common termination codon is TAA. The overall A + T content was 75.13%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the entire mitochondrial genome indicated C. fallax (Zuboxsky) had more close relationship with Euchorthippus fusigeniculatus and Chorthippus chinensis in family Arcypteridae, and implied non-monophyly for the family. The data will be important for better understanding of the phylogenetic relationship of members in Acrididae superfamily.
