16. Artificial light may change flight patterns of bats near bridges along urban waterways

Abstract

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is considered as a major threat to biodiversity, especially to nocturnal species, as it reduces availability, quality and functionality of habitats. However, its effects on the way species use landscape elements such as rivers are still largely understudied, especially the effect of crossing infrastructure lighting on bridges. These elements are nevertheless key commuting and foraging habitats in heavily urbanised landscapes for several taxa such as bats that are particularly affected by ALAN. We studied the effects of the illumination of facades and undersides of bridges on the relative abundance of pipistrelle bats, on their 3D distribution and their behavioural response (i.e. flight speed) close to bridges. We set-up an innovative approach based on a microphone-array to reconstruct positions and flight trajectories in 3D. We studied the effect of lighting on bats in the close proximity of six similar bridges, mostly differentiated by the presence or absence of lighting (3 lit and 3 unlit). All bridges cross the same waterway, within a uniformly and highly urbanized agglomeration (Toulouse, France). We found that bat activity was 1.7 times lower in lit sites. Bats tended to keep a larger distance, and to fly faster close to illuminated bridges. These results suggest that bridge lighting strongly reduces habitat availability and likely connectivity for bats. In that case, results call for switching off the illumination of such bridges crossing riverine ecosystems to preserve their functionality as habitats and corridors for bats.

Abstract

The objective of this work is to study the influence of a pulsed power supply on the energy efficiency of high-intensity discharge lamps in comparison with a pseudo-continuous ballast. The results presented in this paper concern the dynamic behaviour of discharges in mercury vapour doped with thallium iodide. The acquisition of the arc current, arc voltage and spectral radiation enables us to investigate the influence of the pulsed power supply on the electrical characteristics of the lamp such as the behaviour of the lamp conductance and spectral radiance. The analysis of the 577 nm mercury line's response to the current pulse excitation allowed us to identify several phases. Good agreement has been found between simulation and experimental results. Abstract

To evaluate the performance of the colorimetric resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) method for the detection of ofloxacin resistance.A panel of 120 multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains was tested blindly by the REMA method and compared with the results obtained using the BACTEC 460 method.A very good correlation was observed between the two methods.The REMA method is simple, rapid and can be an inexpensive alternative procedure for the rapid detection of anti-tuberculosis drug resistance in laboratories with limited resources.

Abstract

In this paper, the dimming effects on the photometric and electric characteristics of high intensity discharge lamps supplied by a low frequency square waveform are evaluated. For this evaluation an electronic ballast is presented. The ballast consists of a current source, AC/DC converter and a full-bridge inverter. The electronic supply provides to the lamp a different form of current excitation (square waves with variable short drops). Dimming control and the characteristics of low frequency operated high intensity discharge lamps are described. The lamp is represented in a simulation by its conductance model and coupled to its electronic power supply. Experimental results are shown and compared with the simulation. Abstract

Methods to increase the efficiency of a rare gas-water vapour plasma as a light source are presented: (1) the addition of a second rare gas (2) the use of titanium dioxide to enhance the decomposition of water molecules into hydroxyl and hydrogen; (3) pulse discharge operation to improve the efficiency. Analysis shows that the first two methods can yield an increase in efficiency. Use of the catalyst produced a tangible impact on plasma properties and an increase in efficiency that was experimentally observed and agrees with theoretical estimates. In pulse discharge operation, negative ions that are probably created in the afterglow phase eliminate the desired effect. The data obtained using these three approaches, point towards possible directions for further investigation and predict the expected results in case of successful implementation. Abstract

Numerical validation of a self absorption model for high-pressure plasma-based light sources was discussed. It was assumed that the plasma is cylindrically symmetric. The side-on intensity emitted at wavelength ¿ along a plasma diameter perpendicular to the axis was considered. This intensity was given by the one-dimensional solution to the radiation transfer equation. The results are independent of the existence of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and are valid for the resonance lines too.
