Este ensaio busca interpelar a educação do corpo através das práticas corporais ligadas ao esporte de rendimento mediadas pelos dispositivos de gênero. Sob esta mirada, tem como objetivo tensionar algumas questões ligadas aos usos políticos do corpo no que tange a regulamentação da participação de atletas trans e intersexo em competições esportivas. O texto faz uma crítica a tais regulamentos que ficam presos a uma ontologia onde o corpo é reduzido à sua natureza biológica e transcendental. As fronteiras das definições anatômico-sexuais, tradicionalmente impostas nas competições esportivas, sempre expurgaram do território de tais práticas os corpos trans e intersexo, pois estes borram o binarismo de gênero que o esporte sustenta. Conclui-se que a biologia do corpo de atletas trans e intersexo não deveriam ser colocadas como totalizantes nas marcações identitárias desses corpos, e assim, faz-se necessário superar tais “prisões” ontológicas.

Abstract The interface between pediatric palliative care (PPC) and inborn metabolic diseases (IMD) remains incipient, though these conditions fill the state of art of complex chronic diseases, eligible to this health approach. We analyzed the medical records of PPC clinic during the years 2001 to 2021 and the IMD outpatients. We established a parallel with the world scientific literature concerning the epidemiology of PPC and IMD. Among outpatients, 14% were diagnosed with IMD, which were referred to the PPC service earlier compared to Non‐IMD cases. The Group 3 (complex molecules) was the most frequent (64.7%), following by Group 1 representing by small molecules (21.6%), the latter having a lower median age at diagnosis when compared to the former (0.7 vs. 5.2 years, p = 0.001). The sphingolipidoses were the pathologies most frequent in our cohort, in line with what was observed in the literature. There were no differences between IMD groups in terms of diagnosis and PPC referral age, however in Non‐IMD conditions, the age of diagnosis were earlier than IMD. Nevertheless, IMD group showed lower age of referral to PPC. The IMD comprises large fraction of outpatients in the PPC setting, thus further studies are needed in this field.

The present study proposes an advanced multi-field modeling approach to optimize in silico subcutaneous insulin release. We introduce a generalized fluid-pharmacokinetics framework, integrating syringe injection and subcutaneous permeability, thus advancing a first-of-its-kind computational model of insulin delivery port. The proposed theoretical framework comprises three main elements: (1) a realistic geometry model of a commercial port device and the surrounding subcutaneous tissues; (2) a staggered fluid dynamics model of syringe injection coupled with a multi-compartmental model of insulin absorption within a porous medium; (3) a computational-based device optimization to minimize the onset of lipodystrophies due to multiple injection procedures. A novel tissue lesion model is advanced, linking local subcutaneous pressure levels to altered permeability that comprise accumulation effects due to repeated injections. The computational framework was fine-tuned according to state-of-the-art experimental evidence, and extensive numerical analyses predicted unexplored insulin port devices behaviors thus allowing comparison of computed haematic insulin profiles with those obtained clinically. Accordingly, a vast parametric analysis was performed to identify the optimal conditions that minimize tissue lesions and support prolonged device usage.

Abstract Background The European Water Framework Directive foresees the establishment of emission inventories for micropollutants (MP) to facilitate an evidence-based development of mitigation measures. Regionalized pathway analysis constitutes a moderately data-intensive approach to quantify the contribution of different pathways to the total pollution of surface waters. So far, only few European member states have created an inventory that includes diffuse pathways. The fundamental basis to enable it is an accessible, well-structured and harmonized database with data on the concentration of MPs in multiple compartments, such as soils, groundwater, atmospheric deposition and urban systems. Combined with the water and suspended substance balance in river basins, such data enables the estimation of emission loads via specific pathways. In the Danube River Basin, but in general in Europe, a public data management platform with such scope and criteria is still lacking. Results We collected and harmonized MP measurements across multiple compartments and countries together with key metadata, harmonized and combined them into a new database. The resulting tool, available for download, facilitates the assessment of current data availability, in terms of quantity and quality. For example, while the majority of available data stems from groundwater and surface water, other highly relevant compartments are scarcely represented. By examining differences in MP concentration level across compartments, the database can lead to understand the relevance of specific emission pathways and thus to prioritize data-retrieval and calculation efforts in modelling applications. Selected examples show how to exploit the metadata associated to the measurements to extrapolate the results to regions not covered by specific monitoring programmes. For example, PFAS concentrations in treated wastewater show significant dependence on the design capacity of the treatment plant. Conclusions This study showcases how such database can support the setup of emission inventories, guide data providers and national authorities in prioritizing the allocation of resources for new surveys and in optimizing their national data collection and management systems. The process tested showed a great need for enhanced data literacy across countries and institutions to increase data availability and quality to secure the exploitation of the full information potential generated via monitoring programmes.

Background: Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening disease with diverse clinical presentations, making diagnosis challenging and requiring a range of complementary tests. The level of suspicion, based on clinical judgment, guides decisions regarding the initiation of empirical treatment and the selection of appropriate diagnostic tools. This study aimed to develop and validate the EndoPredict-Dx score for early prediction of infective endocarditis diagnosis. Methods: Patients admitted to a specialized cardiovascular hospital emergency department with suspected infective endocarditis between January 2011 and January 2020 were included. The primary outcome was left-sided infective endocarditis according to the Duke criteria. Logistic regression was used to derive the scoring system, with internal validation performed through bootstrapping. Candidate variables were obtained from the admission medical history, physical examination, and laboratory parameters. Results: Of the 805 individuals with suspected infective endocarditis (median age 56 years (40–73); 58.6% men), 530 confirmed the diagnosis based on the Duke criteria. The EndoPredict-Dx assigned points for male sex, previous endocarditis, petechiae, heart murmur, suspected embolism, symptoms lasting 14 or more days at the time of admission, hemoglobin level ≤ 12 g/dL, leukocyte level ≥ 10 × 109/L, C-reactive protein level ≥ 20 mg/L, and urine red blood cells ≥ 20,000 cells/mL. Patients were divided into three risk groups. The AUROC was 0.78 (95% CI 0.75–0.81) for the derivation cohort and 0.77 for the internal validation. Conclusions: The EndoPredict-Dx score accurately predicted the likelihood of infective endocarditis using clinical and laboratory data collected at admission.

Abstract Palaeogenomics is contributing to refine our understanding of many major evolutionary events at an unprecedented resolution, with relevant impacts in several fields, including phylogenetics of extinct species. Few extant and extinct animal species from Mediterranean regions have been characterised at the DNA level thus far. The Sardinian pika, Prolagus sardus (Wagner, 1829), was an iconic lagomorph species that populated Sardinia and Corsica and became extinct during the Holocene. There is a certain scientific debate on the phylogenetic assignment of the extinct genus Prolagus to the family Ochotonidae (one of the only two extant families of the order Lagomorpha) or to a separated family Prolagidae, or to the subfamily Prolaginae within the family Ochotonidae. In this study, we successfully reconstructed a portion of the mitogenome of a Sardinian pika dated to the Neolithic period and recovered from the Cabaddaris cave, an archaeological site in Sardinia. Our calibrated phylogeny may support the hypothesis that the genus Prolagus is an independent sister group to the family Ochotonidae that diverged from the Ochotona genus lineage about 30 million years ago. These results may contribute to refine the phylogenetic interpretation of the morphological peculiarities of the Prolagus genus already described by palaeontological studies.

Este estudo tem como objetivo analisar o modo como os atos de currículo da Educação Física (EF) legitimam as práticas corporais no âmbito de três escolas de Ensino Médio (EM) de Simão Dias – Sergipe. A pesquisa foi feita a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa, do tipo documental. Os respectivos Projetos Político-Pedagógicos e Planos de Ensino do componente foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Notamos que as limitações dos espaços físicos condicionam a vivência de práticas legitimadas na escola. Percebemos forte influência dos Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais, assim como a vivência exaustiva dos esportes euroamericanos.

O escrito tem como objetivo interpelar o fascismo propagado no filme “Raça” (2016), tensionando-o a partir de questões ligadas à raça, à eugenia, ao dispositivo da imunidade e às políticas do corpo e da vida como formas de regulação. A partir de trechos do filme, discutem-se os modos pelos quais os argumentos científicos embasam as possibilidades de eliminação de uns em detrimento da valoração da vida de outros. Os mecanismos fascistas descritos e analisados no filme operam como práticas biopolíticas por meio de dispositivos diversos. Entende-se que isso conforma práticas políticas de regulação sobre os corpos na direção da manutenção ou supressão da vida, de acordo com as características que são atribuídas, arbitrariamente, aos indivíduos e à população. Considera-se que o filme é retrato de um contexto em que tais práticas foram exacerbadas ao limite, e que o esporte olímpico e os Jogos Olímpicos são arenas privilegiadas paras esses ensaios sociais

ABSTRACT Objective: To describe the newborn population with Patau (T13) and Edwards Syndrome (T18) with congenital heart diseases that stayed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a quaternary care hospital complex, regarding surgical and non-surgical medical procedures, palliative care, and outcomes. Methods: Descriptive case series conducted from January/2014 to December/2018 through analysis of records of patients with positive karyotype for T13 or T18 who stayed in the ICU of a quaternary hospital. Descriptive statistics analysis was applied. Results: 33 records of eligible patients were identified: 27 with T18 (82%), and 6 T13 (18%); 64% female and 36% male. Eight were preterm infants with gestational age between 30–36 weeks (24%), and only 4 among the 33 infants had a birth weight >2500 g (12%). Four patients underwent heart surgery and one of them died. Intrahospital mortality was 83% for T13, and 59% for T18. The majority had other malformations and underwent other surgical procedures. Palliative care was offered to 54% of the patients. The median hospitalization time for T18 and T13 was 29 days (range: 2–304) and 25 days (13–58), respectively. Conclusions: Patients with T13 and T18 have high morbidity and mortality, and long hospital and ICU stays. Multicentric studies are needed to allow the analysis of important aspects for creating protocols that, seeking therapeutic proportionality, may bring better quality of life for patients and their families.

O objetivo deste trabalho é refletir sobre a evolução epistemológica do Racionalismo Crítico e a cientificidade da Administração. Para alcançá-lo, empregou-se a pesquisa bibliográfica para recuperar materiais sobre Karl Popper, Imre Lakatos e demais autores, além de perpassar pelos principais pesquisadores brasileiros tangente à cientificidade da Administração. As discussões evidenciam que o Racionalismo Crítico foi influenciado pelos convencionalistas, como Henri Poincaré e Pierre Duhem, além disso, dentro dos marcadores popperianos e lakatianos, a Administração pode ser considerada uma ciência, embora algumas pesquisas possam carecer de rigor metodológico. Por fim, considera-se que essa área do saber ainda tem muito a evoluir, contudo, é a única capaz de investigar com afinco seu objeto principal: as organizações.

Abstract Background Premature birth, perinatal inflammation, and life-saving therapies such as postnatal oxygen and mechanical ventilation are strongly associated with the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); these risk factors, alone or combined, cause lung inflammation and alter programmed molecular patterns of normal lung development. The current knowledge on the molecular regulation of lung development mainly derives from mechanistic studies conducted in newborn rodents exposed to postnatal hyperoxia, which have been proven useful but have some limitations. Methods Here, we used the rabbit model of BPD as a cost-effective alternative model that mirrors human lung development and, in addition, enables investigating the impact of premature birth per se on the pathophysiology of BPD without further perinatal insults (e.g., hyperoxia, LPS-induced inflammation). First, we characterized the rabbit’s normal lung development along the distinct stages (i.e., pseudoglandular, canalicular, saccular, and alveolar phases) using histological, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses. Then, the impact of premature birth was investigated, comparing the sequential transcriptomic profiles of preterm rabbits obtained at different time intervals during their first week of postnatal life with those from age-matched term pups. Results Histological findings showed stage-specific morphological features of the developing rabbit’s lung and validated the selected time intervals for the transcriptomic profiling. Cell cycle and embryo development, oxidative phosphorylation, and WNT signaling, among others, showed high gene expression in the pseudoglandular phase. Autophagy, epithelial morphogenesis, response to transforming growth factor β, angiogenesis, epithelium/endothelial cells development, and epithelium/endothelial cells migration pathways appeared upregulated from the 28th day of gestation (early saccular phase), which represents the starting point of the premature rabbit model. Premature birth caused a significant dysregulation of the inflammatory response. TNF-responsive, NF-κB regulated genes were significantly upregulated at premature delivery and triggered downstream inflammatory pathways such as leukocyte activation and cytokine signaling, which persisted upregulated during the first week of life. Preterm birth also dysregulated relevant pathways for normal lung development, such as blood vessel morphogenesis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Conclusion These findings establish the 28-day gestation premature rabbit as a suitable model for mechanistic and pharmacological studies in the context of BPD.
