The Martian moon Phobos is the target of the upcoming JAXA Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission. There are currently no known samples of Phobos, so spacecraft hardware testing and scientific studies require Phobos regolith simulants. Here, we present two new Phobos regolith simulants: Phobos Captured Asteroid-1 (PCA-1) and Phobos Giant Impact (PGI-1). These two simulants reflect the two hypotheses for Phobos’s formation, and thus the two broad possibilities for composition. This work follows previous efforts to document the development of mineralogically accurate simulants, in an effort to overcome past pitfalls with inappropriate uses of simulants. We report physical and geotechnical properties of PCA-1 and PGI-1, including their reflectance spectra, grain size distributions, abrasivity, cohesion, strength, and hardness. Our intent is for PCA-1 and PGI-1 to be open standards for Phobos simulants, and we present the simulant recipes and production methodology for use and modification by the community.

The main objective of this work is to compositionally analyse the visible to near-infrared spectra of a total of six V-type candidates identified using the MOVIS (Y-J) versus (J-Ks) colour–colour plot and located outside the Vesta collisional family. We obtained visible and near-infrared spectra of these asteroids using the 2.54m Isaac Newton Telescope, the 2.5m Nordic Optical Telescope, and the 3.58m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, all located at the El Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory (La Palma, Spain), as well as the 3.0m NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, located at the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. We computed several diagnostic spectral parameters (slopes, band centres, band depths, band area ratio, or BAR) and compared them to the ones known for HED meteorites and (4) Vesta. The taxonomic classification confirmed five out of the six candidates as V-types, leading to an identification success rate about 83 per cent. In general, the spectral parameters obtained for the five V-types are in good agreement with those of HED meteorites and (4) Vesta. The exception is asteroid (2452) Lyot, a V-type in the outer belt, located very close to (1459) Magnya, but showing distinct [Wo] and [Fs] molar contents both from Magnya and Vesta, pointing toward a diogenitic compostion. We also studied the dependency of the BAR parameter on the way it is computed (removing or not the continuum), the spectral slope, and the last point used to delimit the right wing of the absorption band at 2 μm.

The Exolith Lab at The University of Central Florida’s Center for Lunar and Asteroid Surface Science (CLASS) produces high-mineralogical fidelity asteroid and planetary regolith simulants (several are pictured in Figure 1). Regolith simulants are used as analogs in scientific studies and in hardware development and testing for space exploration and in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) efforts. It is crucial that such simulants accurately replicate the mineral, chemical and physical properties of the simulated regoliths. Mineralogical fidelity is the foundation of our approach. For each simulant, we source individual minerals from industrial suppliers to reproduce the mineralogy and bulk chemistry of a reference material. We also control for particle size distribution, crushing the regolith simulant to a power law distribution or sieving to a specified distribution as requested. Asteroid and Phobos Simulants We offer a CI meteorite-based primitive asteroid simulant and have also developed CM and CR based simulants [1]. Volatile-rich asteroids are high-priority targets for ISRU efforts. The CI simulant scores highly in fidelity against reference materials in its mineralogy and bulk chemistry, grain and bulk density, magnetic properties, mechanical cobble strength, and patterns of volatile release [2]. Simulating the organic component of planetary materials is a challenge, as this component contains hazardous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In our simulants, we instead use sub-bituminous coal as the organic component. Sub-bituminous coal has similar aromaticity and chemical composition to PAHs but is significantly less hazardous. Another challenge is sourcing the phyllosilicate components. CM mineralogies in particular contain the Fe-serpentine cronstedtite, which does not occur naturally on Earth in the commercial quantities needed for large scale simulant production. We substitute other phyllosilicates, including Mg-serpentines, opting for the lizardite polymorph rather than hazardous chrysotile. We have recently developed two Phobos simulants for testing of hardware for the upcoming JAXA Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission, which includes a Phobos sample return objective. These simulants are PGI-1 (Phobos Giant Impact), based on the hypothesis that Phobos was formed by a giant impact with Mars, and PCA-1 (Phobos Captured Asteroid), based on the captured asteroid origin hypothesis. The PCA-1 recipe is adapted from our CI asteroid recipe. PGI-1 is CI mixed with a simplified Mars crust and mantle. In addition to our standard tests of bulk chemistry and particle size distribution, we measured the abrasivity, angle of repose, compressive strength, shear strength, cohesion, flowability, and hardness for both Phobos simulants. A paper on these results is in review. This is part of a larger effort to systematically characterize the physical properties of our simulants, including geotechnical properties that are of interest for spacecraft hardware development. We will make these results available to the community in the peer-reviewed literature. Other Simulants Exolith Lab also offers the following simulants: Lunar Highlands Simulant (LHS-1): Generic highlands soil with a particle size distribution matched to Apollo 16 samples. Lunar Mare Simulant (LMS-1): Generic mare soil with a particle size distribution matched to Apollo samples. Mars Global Simulant (MGS-1) and variations: Global basaltic Mars soil simulant based on Rocknest soil. Two variants (a sulfate-enriched version, MGS-1S, and a clay-enriched version, MGS-1C) were also developed for water-extraction studies. Jezero Delta Simulant (JEZ-1): Developed based on remote sensing of the Jezero delta soils that will be the target of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover. DUST-Y: Physical silicate dust simulant with ~1-10 micron particles. Useful for fine dust mitigation studies. About Exolith Lab Exolith Lab is a not for profit extension of CLASS. Asteroid (16) Psyche is a unique, metal-rich object belonging to the “M” taxonomic class. It may be a remnant protoplanet that has been stripped of most silicates by a hit-and-run collision. Because Psyche offers insight into the planetary formation process, it is the target of NASA’s Psyche mission, set to launch in 2023. In order to constrain Psyche’s surface properties, we have carried out a mid-infrared (5–14 µm) spectroscopic study using data collected with the Spitzer Space Telescope’s Infrared Spectrograph. Our study includes two observations covering different rotational phases. Using thermophysical modeling, we find that Psyche’s surface is smooth and likely has a thermal inertia Γ = 5–25 J/m2/K/s1/2 and bolometric emissivity ϵ = 0.9, although a scenario with ϵ = 0.7 and thermal inertia up to 95 J/m2/K/s1/2 is possible if Psyche is somewhat larger than previously determined. The smooth surface is consistent with the presence of a metallic bedrock, which would be more ductile than silicate bedrock, and thus may not readily form boulders upon impact events. From comparisons with laboratory spectra of silicate and meteorite powders, Psyche’s 7–14 µm emissivity spectrum is consistent with the presence of fine-grained (

The inner asteroid belt is an important source of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). Dynamical studies of the inner asteroid belt have identified several families overlapping in proper orbital elements, including the Polana and Eulalia families that contain a large fraction of the low-albedo asteroids in this region. We present results from two coordinated observational campaigns to characterize this region through near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. These campaigns ran from August 2012 to May 2014 and used the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The observations focused on objects within these families or in the background, with low albedo ( p v ≤ 0.1) and low inclination ( i P ≤ 7°). We observed 63 asteroids (57 never before observed in the NIR): 61 low-albedo objects and two interlopers, both compatible with S- or E- taxonomical types. We found our sample to be spectrally homogeneous in the NIR. The sample shows a continuum of neutral to moderately-red concave-up spectra, very similar within the uncertainties. Only one object in the sample, asteroid (3429) Chuvaev , has a blue spectrum, with a slope ( S ′ = − 1.33 ± 0.21%/1000 A) significantly different from the average spectrum ( S ′ = 0.68 ± 0.68%/1000 A). This spectral homogeneity is independent of membership in families or the background population. Furthermore, we show that the Eulalia and Polana families cannot be distinguished using NIR data. We also searched for rotational variability on the surface of (495) Eulalia which we do not detect. (495) Eulalia shows a red concave-up spectrum with an average slope S ′ = 0.91 ± 0.60%/1000 A, very similar to the average slope of our sample. The spectra of two targets of sample-return missions, (101955) Bennu, target of NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex and (162173) 1999 JU 3 target of the Japanese Space Agency’s Hayabusa-2, are very similar to our average spectrum, which would be compatible with an origin in this region of the inner belt.

Spectroscopic investigations of primitive asteroid families constrain family evolution and composition and conditions in the solar nebula, and reveal information about past and present distributions of volatiles in the solar system. Visible and near-infrared studies of primitive asteroid families have shown spectral diversity between and within families. Here, we aim to better understand the composition and physical properties of two primitive families with vastly different ages: ancient Themis (∼2.5 Gyr) and young Veritas (∼8 Myr). We analyzed the 5 – 14 µm Spitzer Space Telescope spectra of 11 Themis-family asteroids, including eight previously studied by Licandro et al. (2012), and nine Veritas-family asteroids, for a total of 20 asteroids in our sample. We detect a broad 10-µm emission feature, attributed to fine-grained and/or porous silicate regolith, in all 11 Themis-family spectra and six of nine Veritas-family asteroids, with 10-µm spectral contrast ranging from 1% ± 0.1% to 8.5% ± 0.9%. We used thermal modeling to derive diameters, beaming parameters and albedos for our sample. Asteroids in both families have beaming parameters near unity and geometric albedos in the range 0.03 – 0.14. Spectral contrast of the 10-µm silicate emission feature is correlated with beaming parameter and rotation period in the Themis family, and may be related to near-infrared spectral slope for both families. We see no correlations of 10-µm emission with diameter or albedo for either family. Comparison with laboratory spectra of primitive meteorites suggests these asteroids are similar to meteorites with relatively low abundances of phyllosilicates. Overall, our results suggest the Themis and Veritas families are primitive asteroids with variation in composition and/or regolith properties within both families.

The Polana-Eulalia family complex is located in the inner part of the asteroid belt, bounded by the ν6 and the 3:1 resonances, where we can find another three collisional families of primitive asteroids (Erigone, Clarissa, and Sulamitis), and a low-albedo population of background objects. This region of the belt is believed to be the most likely origin of the two primitive near-Earth asteroids that are the current targets of two sample return missions: NASA's OSIRIS-REx and JAXA's Hayabusa 2 to Asteroids (101955) Bennu and (162173) Ryugu (also known as 1999 JU3), respectively. Therefore, understanding these families will enhance the scientific return of these missions. We present the results of a spectroscopic survey of asteroids in the region of the Polana-Eulalia family complex, and also asteroids from the background population of low-albedo, low-inclination objects. We obtained visible spectra of a total of 65 asteroids, using the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) and the 3.6 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), both located at the El Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, in the island of La Palma (Spain), and the 3.6 m New Technology Telescope (NTT), located at the European Southern Observatory of La Silla, in Chile. From the spectral analysis of our sample we found that, in spite of the presence of distinct dynamical groups, the asteroids in this region present spectral homogeneity at visible wavelengths, showing a continuum of spectral slopes, from blue to moderately red, typical of primitive asteroids classified as B- and C-types. We conclude that visible spectra cannot be used to distinguish between members of the Polana and the Eulalia families, or members of the background population. The visible spectra of the two targets of sample return missions, Asteroids Bennu and Ryugu, are compatible with the spectra of the asteroids in this region, supporting previous studies that suggested either the Polana family or the background population as the most likely origins of these NEAs.

The Main Belt Asteroid (16) Psyche is the target object of the NASA Discovery Mission Psyche. We observed the asteroid at ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths (170–310 nm) using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope during two separate observations. We report that the spectrum is very red in the UV, with a blue upturn shortward of ∼200 nm. We find an absorption feature at 250 nm and a weaker absorption feature at 275 nm that may be attributed to a metal-oxide charge transfer band. We find that the red-sloped, relatively featureless spectrum of (16) Psyche is best matched with the reflectance spectrum of pure iron; however, our intimate mixture models show that small grains of iron may dominate the reflectance spectrum even if iron only comprises up to 10% of the material on the surface. We also stress that there is a limited database of reflectances for planetary surface analogs at UV wavelengths for comparison with the spectrum of (16) Psyche. The mid- and far-UV spectra (

We obtained 2–4 μm spectra of six M-type asteroids using the SpeX spectrograph at NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility. We find evidence for hydrated minerals on all six asteroids, including two that were previously thought to be dry. One of our targets, (216) Kleopatra, shows rotational variability in the depth of its 3-μm feature. We also studied three of these asteroids in the 0.8–2.4 μm range using the NICS instrument at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) in La Palma, Spain. The discovery of spectral signatures of hydrated minerals on so many M-types is difficult to reconcile with a highly thermally evolved composition. It has been suggested that the hydrated minerals could have been delivered to M-types via impacts with primitive objects, or that the M-types may actually have primitive compositions that are not represented in meteorite collections. Understanding the origin and type of hydration on these asteroids will help determine which of these interpretations is correct.
