Optimizing short-term decisions over a rolling horizon and/or using deterministic penalties to capture system stochasticity can lead to myopic policies that fail to consider unplanned events and their long-term adverse effects. We present a methodology that integrates an off-line optimization model with a simulation procedure to determine the profitability of different operating strategies; specifically, the latter is used to generate additional constraints for the former when failures occur according to system component operating lifetimes that (i) are subject to exogenous uncertainty, and (ii) may degrade more quickly under specific operating conditions. We use the feedback provided by the simulation model in a parametric analysis to obtain penalties that can be used in short-term operations scheduling to maximize the long-term revenues obtained by the optimization model. We apply this research to a concentrating solar power plant; our results show that the methodology can be used to choose an operating policy that balances maximizing profit while accounting for maintenance costs. Integrating the optimization model with a simulation procedure reveals that aggressive prices for cycling yield about 55% fewer startups and 30% fewer failures compared to using a more typical start-up operating strategy, and can save hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in repair costs over the lifetime of the plant. Concentrating solar power central-receiver plants use thousands of sun-tracking mirrors, i.e., heliostats, to reflect sunlight to a central receiver, which collects and uses the heat to generate electricity. Over time, soiling reduces the reflectivity of the heliostats and, therefore, the efficiency of the system. Current industry practice sends vehicles to wash heliostats in an ad hoc fashion. We present a mixed-integer nonlinear program that determines wash vehicle fleet size, mix, and assignment of wash crews to heliostats to minimize the sum of (i) the revenues lost due to heliostat soiling, (ii) the costs of hiring wash crews and operating the vehicles, and (iii) the costs of purchasing wash vehicles. We establish conditions for convexity of the objective function, and then propose a decomposition method that enables near-optimal solutions to the wash vehicle fleet sizing and assignment problem on the order of a couple of minutes. Microgrids are an increasingly popular solution to provide energy resilience in response to increasing grid dependency and the growing impacts of climate change on grid operations. However, existing microgrid models do not currently consider the uncertain and long-term impacts of climate change when determining a set of design and operational decisions to minimize long-term costs or meet a resilience threshold. In this paper, we develop a novel scenario generation method that accounts for the uncertain effects of (i) climate change on variable renewable energy availability, (ii) extreme heat events on site load, and (iii) population and electrification trends on load growth. Additionally, we develop a two-stage stochastic programming extension of an existing microgrid design and dispatch optimization model to obtain uncertainty-informed and climate-resilient energy system decisions that minimizes long-term costs. Use of sample average approximation to validate our two case studies illustrates that the proposed methodology produces high-quality solutions that add resilience to systems with existing backup generation while reducing expected long-term costs. • We generate climate change-informed load and renewable energy production profiles. • We extend a design-and-dispatch problem to a two-stage stochastic program. • Cases with high variation in annual renewable output show the methodology's value. Microgrids are frequently employed in remote regions, in part because access to a larger electric grid is impossible, difficult, or compromises reliability and independence. Although small microgrids often employ spot generation, in which a diesel generator is attached directly to a load, microgrids that combine these individual loads and augment generators with photovoltaic cells and batteries as a distributed energy system are emerging as a safer, less costly alternative. We present a model that seeks the minimum-cost microgrid design and ideal dispatched power to support a small remote site for one year with hourly fidelity under a detailed battery model; this mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) is intractable with commercial solvers but loosely coupled with respect to time. A mixed-integer linear program (MIP) approximates the model, and a partitioning scheme linearizes the bilinear terms. We introduce a novel policy for loosely coupled MIPs in which the system reverts to equivalent conditions at regular time intervals; this separates the problem into subproblems that we solve in parallel. We obtain solutions within 5% of optimality in at most six minutes across 14 MIP instances from the literature and solutions within 5% of optimality to the MINLP instances within 20 minutes. Lack of access to reliable energy is a major concern for countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The national grids are unable to consistently satisfy demand. Therefore, users turn to distributed generation systems in the form of back-up generators. However, such systems are usually designed based on a rule of thumb. We employ a mixed-integer linear programming model that considers several options such as renewable energy, combined heat and power, and storage technologies, in addition to those on-site, to provide optimal design and dispatch decisions that minimize total cost. We apply this model to a case study for a hospital in South Africa, considering its need for reliable electricity in light of multiple outages that might occur over the course of a year, as well as its high heating and cooling loads. Our results show that optimal design and dispatch decisions for the distributed generation system address reliability challenges, regardless of the time at which they occur. And, these solutions yield millions of dollars in savings, suggesting that technologies such as the absorption chiller may be overlooked in typical designs; its integration can reduce demand charges even in the absence of combined heat and power. We show that total cost is most sensitive to changes in site electrical demand, followed by capital cost, fuel cost, photovoltaic production, and monthly demand charges; changes in fuel cost primarily affect system sizes of combined heat and power and the absorption chiller, while photovoltaic system size is more sensitive to the changes in capital and fuel costs, photovoltaic resource availability, and hourly electrical demand. Finally, an outage simulator demonstrates the ability of our optimized system to sustain with no interruptions in power five-hour outages with probability 1.0 and ten-hour outages with probability 0.65, significant improvements over 0.5 and 0.0, respectively, under a business-as-usual case. • We employ a mixed-integer program that considers distributed energy resources. • We apply this model to a case study for a hospital in South Africa. • Solutions yield millions of dollars in savings over the planning horizon. • Total cost is most sensitive to changes in capital cost, followed by fuel cost. • The optimized system can sustain operations with no interruptions in power. SOLARPILOT is a software package that generates solar field layouts and characterizes the optical performance of concentrating solar power (CSP) tower systems. SOLARPILOT was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) as a stand-alone desktop application but has also been incorporated into NREL's System Advisor Model (SAM) in a simplified format. Prior means for user interaction with SOLARPILOT have included the application's graphical interface, the SAM routines with limited configurability, and through a built-in scripting language called "LK." This article presents a new, full-featured, PYTHON-based application programmable interface (API) for SOLARPILOT, which we hereafter refer to as CoPylot. CoPylot enables PYTHON users to perform detailed CSP tower analysis utilizing either the Hermite expansion technique (analytical) or the SolTrace ray-tracing engine. CoPylot's enables CSP researchers to perform analysis that was previously not possible through SOLARPILOT'S existing interfaces. Heliostat-based concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) systems can offer immense potential to provide low-cost, dispatchable renewable thermal and electrical energy to help achieve 100% decarbonized energy infrastructure in the United States. Heliostats are a major determinant of both capital cost and performance of state-of-the-art commercial molten salt towers and Generation 3 CSP systems. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) launched the Heliostat Consortium (HelioCon), a five-year initiative to advance heliostat technologies. The HelioCon mission is threefold: (1) establish strategic core testing and modeling capabilities and infrastructure at national labs; (2) support heliostat technology development in relevant industries; and (3) serve as a central repository to integrate industry, academia, and other stakeholders for heliostat technology research, development, validation, and deployment. In this Perspective, HelioCon presents a roadmapping study on advancing heliostat technologies, intended as a central reference for the entire CSP community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
