Photovoltaic modules are impacted by overheating, which degrades their conversion efficiency and shortens their lifespan. This work attempts to study the cooling potential for a hybrid photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) system by employing CuO and Fe2O3 nanofluids with 0.2% and 0.3% volume fractions (φ), circulated in a heat exchanger attached at the rear side of the PV module to lower the temperature of the PV cells and improve its energy and exergy efficiencies. Consequently, a 2D numerical model was analysed given the energy balance across the PV/T system layers, which is evaluated in line with measured experimental data. The results indicate that the successfully synthesised nanomaterials could improve the performance of the nanofluids and increase the heat exchange between PV/T system layers, reducing the PV cells’ temperature by 23.49% and 34.58% when cooling by CuO and Fe2O3 nanofluids at φ=0.3%. Compared to the uncooled PV module, the electrical efficiency has increased by 9.21% and 10.30%, while thermal efficiency increased by 38.9% and 43.3% under cooling with CuO and Fe2O3 nanofluids, respectively. Thereby, the exergy destruction (exergy losses) and entropy generation have decreased by about 26% and 68% when cooling with Fe2O3 nanofluid, which improved the exergy efficiency by 13% more than CuO nanofluid.

Abstract An efficient and reproducible growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes by CCVD requires accurate and specific setting of the synthesis parameters and the properties of catalyst thin layers. In this work, the growth of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes onto AZO (= aluminum doped zinc oxide) glass substrate covered by Al2O3 and Fe-Co catalyst layer system is presented. Investigation of the effect of catalyst composition and synthesis temperature on CVD growth revealed the optimum condition of the synthesis. The analysis of as-prepared samples by SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy was carried out to prove the structure and quality of carbon deposit. Theoretical considerations have supported speculative ideas about the role of the support layer, the transformation of the catalyst layer in the presence of hydrogen gas and the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes. The mechanism of CNT growth is modelled and the order of magnitude of experimentally observed vertical linear growth rate of CNT (several nm/s) is reproduced.

Synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) play a key role in modern vehicles as they do not require permanent magnets and sliding brushes, reducing maintenance requirements and increasing reliability. My research focused on the development of robust torque control for SynRM. In the simulations, I compared the linear quadratic (LQ) controller with the conventional proportional–integral (PI) controller. To apply the LQ control method, I converted the nonlinear motor model into a linear one. We expect the results of this research to show that the LQ controller provides faster and more robust performance than the PI controller. LQ control can provide faster response times and a more stable operation, which are particularly important under dynamic vehicle operating conditions. Although LQ control is more computationally intensive and takes longer to fine tune, the results show that it results in a better and more stable control system. Such benefits are significant in dynamic vehicle operating conditions where fast and reliable torque control is essential. Overall, it can be concluded that advanced control techniques such as LQ can contribute to increasing the efficiency and performance of synchronous reluctance motors in the automotive industry, thus contributing to the development of sustainable and reliable vehicles.

Recently, photovoltaic technology applications have occupied a wide range in electric generation. The temperature rising higher than the operating temperature permissible is the weak point facing this technology, which significantly influences the performance of the photovoltaic cells. Using nanofluids as the coolant of photovoltaic (PV) modules is an effective method, circulating nanofluids in the heat exchanger attached to the backside of the PV module to absorb excess heat and enhance the performance of the PV module. The current work investigates using zirconium oxide (ZrO 2) nanofluid as a coolant at different volume concentrations (0.015 vol%, 0.025 vol%, 0.0275 vol%) in deionized (DI) water to reduce the temperature of the photovoltaic PV cells and then analyses the performance from the energy/exergy viewpoints. The results indicate that the PV module temperature was reduced by 10.2 °C when cooled by ZrO 2 nanofluid at 0.0275% volume concentration in DI water compared to the reference PV module, resulting in remarkable system energy and exergy enhancement. Besides, the cooling by DI water has decreased the PV module temperature by 5.1 °C. The overall efficiencies gradually increment with an increase in volume concentration by 8.9%, 18.8 % and 24.4%, respectively, compared with PV modules cooled by DI water. Using ZrO 2 nanofluids with 0.0275 vol% could enhance the exergy efficiency by 66.8% and reduce the exergy losses and entropy generation by 7% and 26%, respectively.

Environmental concerns about chemical and biological pollution of water are of alarming proportions. Therefore, various polymeric membranes with improved mechanical and physico-chemical qualities for water treatment were developed using mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) or nanoparticles (NPs) embedded with the membranes. However, the problem of fouling and consequent higher operating and membrane replacement costs are barriers to the use of membrane technology. Therefore, a deeper comprehension of membrane fouling is not only essential for finding solutions but also a crucial factor in the development of membrane technology. The conventional blending modification would result in a large number of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. In reality, the aggregation of nanoparticles in composite membranes is a considerable issue and would result in unfavorable changes to the features of the membrane (e.g. decreased water flux, weakened mechanical strength). In this review, it was looked into the effect of an optimal concentration of the hydrophilic nanoparticle additions to avoid the aggregation of nanoparticles in composite membranes and the reduced of using high amounts of valuable and costly nanoparticles in the membranes production and to obtain better results. The influence of the additives, such as (carbon nanotubes (CNTs), silica (SiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), and graphene oxide (GO), etc.) was investigated.

This study aims to optimize operating parameters of the effect of embedded silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) and modified silica NPs with polyethylenimine (PEI) (SiO2-g-PEI NPs) into polyethersulfone (PES) to fabricate a mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The performance of modified MMMs was compared in the separation of Mebeverine hydrochloride (MBV) from aqueous pharmaceutical wastewater. In order to produce a particular quantity of flux and rejection above desired levels, an optimization technique was used to find the best values for various important process parameters. To enhance the effectiveness on a bigger scale, response surface methodology (RSM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilized as mathematical and statistical approaches. This study examined the effects of operational parameters on the PES-NPs membranes permeate flux and MBV rejection for each sample. These parameters included SiO2/or SiO2-g-PEI NPs content (0.7–1 wt %), solution feed pH values (4-10), and MBV concentration (10–100 ppm). A mathematical model to calculate the permeate flux and rejection (%) was established. The results showed that the SiO2 MMMs had the best performance of 38.27 LMH permeate flux and 81.26% of MBV rejection, while the permeate flux and MBV rejection % for SiO2-g-PEI MMMs were 104.11LMH and 99.00%. The SiO2 wt % of 0.8447%, MBV concentration of 98.18 ppm, and pH of 4 were the optimal parameters for the SiO2 MMMs, while the optimal parameters for SiO2-g-PEI MMMs were SiO2-g-PEI wt. % of 0.93%, MBV concentration of 22.7 ppm, and pH of 4.79 for eliciting the optimum response.

The energy and exergy efficiency of a photovoltaic thermal (PV/T) system at various volume fractions is investigated with mono TiO2 nanofluid and new hybrid TiO2–Fe2O3 nanofluid. Serpentine tubes soldered on an absorbing plate attached to the rear of the PV module have been proposed to evaluate the effect of nanofluids on the PV/T temperature reduction, energy produced, and exergy losses. The study compared energy and exergy with previous studies and delivered an economic analysis to confirm the feasibility of applying nanofluids. The results indicated that using TiO2–Fe2O3 nanofluid reduced the PV cell's temperature by 42.19% compared to water, TiO2 nanofluid, which increased the electrical power by 74.5% and 46.22% when cooling by mono and hybrid nanofluid at 0.3 vol%. The PV/T system's maximum thermal and electrical efficiency recorded with mono and hybrid nanofluids was 34.6%, 8.44%, 47.2%, and 12.62%, respectively. Dispersion of hybrid nanocomposite in DI water has enhanced the Nu number and HTC by 42.72% and 23% higher than mono nanofluid, which improved the exergy efficiency of the PV/T system by 14.89%. A better payback period was achieved with a hybrid nanofluid by 54 days with reduced exergy losses by 45.5% and entropy generation by 86.29%.

A newly developed water-soluble polymeric nano-additive termed “partially cross-linked nanoparticles graft copolymer (PCLNPG)'' has been successfully synthesized and harnessed as a pore former for modifying a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane for dyes removal. The PCLNPG content was varied in the PES polymeric matrix aiming to scrutinize its impact on membrane surface characteristics, morphological structure, and overall performance. Proposed interaction mechanism between methylene blue (MB), methyle orange (MO), and malachite green (MG) dyes with PES membrane was presented as well. Hydrophilicity and porosity of the novel membrane increased by 18 and 17 %, respectively, when manufactured with a 3 Wt. % PCLNPG, according to the findings. Besides this, the disclosed increased porosity, rather than the hydrophilic properties of the water-soluble PCLNPG, was the principal cause of the diminished contact angle. Meanwhile, raising the PCLNPG content in the prepared membrane made worthy shifts in its structure. A sponge-like region was materialized near the bottom surface as well. The membrane's pure water flux (PWF) synthesized with 3 Wt.% PCLNPG recorded 628 LMH, which is estimated 3.95 fold the pristine membrane. MG, MB, and MO dyes were rejected by 90.6, 96.3, and 97.87 %, respectively. These findings showed that the performance characteristics of the PES/PCLNPG membrane make it a potentially advantageous option to treat the textile wastewater.

Overheating of photovoltaic (PV) cell is one of the most common issues that cause the degradation of their function and reduce conversion efficiency. This work investigates the effect of using a novel TiO2-CuO hybrid nanofluid to improve the energy and exergy of photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems by reducing PV cell temperature. Serpentine tubes soldered on an absorbing plate attached behind the PV module were proposed to improve heat removal of the PV module with volume concentrations of 0.2 vol% and 0.3 vol%, with a flow rate of 1.16 L/min. Improving the thermophysical properties of the hybrid nanofluid has reduced the temperature of the PV module by 39% more than the uncooled PV module. The PVT system's electrical power and overall efficiency improved by 77.5% and 58.2%, respectively, at increased volume concentration to 0.3 vol% compared with the uncooled PV module. The exergy analysis indicated an increase in the overall exergy efficiency by 14.97 %, with thermal exergy dropping because of the closer the outlet nanofluid temperature to ambient temperature. Hybrid nanofluid cooling has improved exergy efficiency to 14.97%, reducing exergy losses by 37.9% and entropy generation by 69.6% at 0.3 vol%. The economic analysis shows a better payback period of 21 months when cooling with a hybrid nanofluid compared with the uncooled PV module.

The present work demonstrates the performance of a von Hámos high-energy-resolution X-ray spectrometer based on a non-conventional conical Si single-crystal analyzer. The analyzer is tested with different primary and secondary X-ray sources as well as a hard X-ray sensitive CCD camera. The spectrometer setup is also characterized with ray-tracing simulations. Both experimental and simulated results affirm that the conical spectrometer can efficiently detect and resolve the two pairs of two elements (Ni and Cu) Kα X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) peaks simultaneously, requiring a less than 2 cm-wide array on a single position-sensitive detector. The possible applications of this simple yet broad-energy-spectrum crystal spectrometer range from quickly adapting it as another probe for complex experiments at synchrotron beamlines to analyzing X-ray emission from plasma generated by ultrashort laser pulses at modern laser facilities.

Abstract Plastic waste has become a major global environmental concern. The utilization of solid waste-derived porous carbon for energy storage has received widespread attention in recent times. Herein, we report the comparison of electrochemical performance of porous carbon foams (CFs) produced from waste polyurethane (PU) elastomer templates via two different activation pathways. Electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) fabricated from the carbon foam exhibited a gravimetric capacitance of 74.4 F/g at 0.1 A/g. High packing density due to the presence of carbon spheres in the hierarchical structure offered excellent volumetric capacitance of 134.7 F/cm3 at 0.1 A/g. Besides, the CF-based EDLCs exhibited Coulombic efficiency close to 100% and showed stable cyclic performance for 5000 charge–discharge cycles with good capacitance retention of 97.7% at 3 A/g. Low equivalent series resistance (1.05 Ω) and charge transfer resistance (0.23 Ω) due to the extensive presence of hydroxyl functional groups contributed to attaining high power (48.89 kW/kg). Based on the preferred properties such as high specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure, surface functionalities, low metallic impurities, high conductivity and desirable capacitive behaviour, the CF prepared from waste PU elastomers have shown potential to be adopted as electrodes in EDLCs.

Summary Filamentous fungi produce a wide variety of enzymes in order to efficiently degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides. The production of these enzymes is controlled by transcriptional regulators, which also control the catabolic pathways that convert the released monosaccharides. Two transcriptional regulators, GalX and GalR, control d‐galactose utilization in the model filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans, while the arabinanolytic regulator AraR regulates l‐arabinose catabolism. d‐Galactose and l‐arabinose are commonly found together in polysaccharides, such as arabinogalactan, xylan and rhamnogalacturonan I. Therefore, the catabolic pathways that convert d‐galactose and l‐arabinose are often also likely to be active simultaneously. In this study, we investigated the interaction between GalX, GalR and AraR in d‐galactose and l‐arabinose catabolism. For this, we generated single, double and triple mutants of the three regulators, and analysed their growth and enzyme and gene expression profiles. Our results clearly demonstrated that GalX, GalR and AraR co‐regulate d‐galactose catabolism in A. nidulans. GalX has a prominent role on the regulation of genes of d‐galactose oxido‐reductive pathway, while AraR can compensate for the absence of GalR and/or GalX.

Migratory birds employ a variety of mechanisms to ensure appropriate timing of migration based on integration of endogenous and exogenous information. The cues to fatten and depart from the non‐breeding area are often linked to exogenous cues such as temperature or precipitation and the endogenous program. Shorter distance migrants should rely heavily on environmental information when initiating migration given relatively close proximity to the breeding area. However, the ability to fatten and subsequently depart may be linked to individual circumstances, including current fuel load and body size. For early and late departing migrants, we investigate effects of temperature, precipitation, lean body mass, fuel load and day of year on the initiation of migration (i.e. fuel load and departure timing) from the non‐breeding region by analyzing 21 years of banding data for four species of short‐ and medium‐distance migrants. Temperatures at the non‐breeding area were related to temperatures at potential stopover areas. Despite local cues being predictive of conditions further north, the amount variation explained by local weather conditions in our models differed by species and temporal period but was low overall (< 33% variation explained). For each species, we also compared lean body mass and fuel load between early and late departing migrants, which showed mixed results. Our combined results suggest that most individuals migrating short or medium distances in our study did not time the initiation of migration with local predictive cues alone, but rather other factors such as lean body mass, fuel load, day of year, which may be a proxy for the endogenous program, and those beyond the scope of our study also influenced the initiation of migration. Our study contributes to understanding which factors influence departure decisions of short‐ and medium‐distance migrants as they transition from the non‐breeding to the migratory phase of the annual cycle.

Development and application of hybrid membranes containing multi-component materials are increasing day by day in the fields of environmental protection and water treatment. In this research, the efficiency of titania nanowire (TiO2 NW)-based self-supported hybrid membranes was investigated in the removal of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria and MS2 bacteriophages from contaminated water mimicking the microorganism suspension. Furthermore, toxicology tests on the as-prepared membranes were also performed. TiO2 NWs were coated with iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) and copper(II) oxide (CuO) nanoparticles, respectively, and cellulose was used as reinforcement material. It was found that, the functionalisation strongly affected the MS2 removal ability of as-prepared membranes, which can be due to the electrostatic interactions between the surface of hybrid membrane and the bacteriophages. The most efficient removal (greater than or equal to 99.99%) was obtained with the TiO2 NW-CuO-cellulose membrane at pH 7.0. The fabricated hybrid membranes were characterized by micro computed tomography (μCT), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), contact angle measurement and inductively coupled optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques. This study shows a simple route of the usage of novel and effective inorganic nanowire-based hybrid membranes for bacteria and virus removal, providing new pathways in the field of water filtration technologies.

Abstract Background Investigations of evolution knowledge and acceptance and their relation are central to evolution education research. Ambiguous results in this field of study demonstrate a variety of measuring issues, for instance differently theorized constructs, or a lack of standardized methods, especially for cross-country comparisons. In particular, meaningful comparisons across European countries, with their varying cultural backgrounds and education systems, are rare, often include only few countries, and lack standardization. To address these deficits, we conducted a standardized European survey, on 9200 first-year university students in 26 European countries utilizing a validated, comprehensive questionnaire, the “Evolution Education Questionnaire”, to assess evolution acceptance and knowledge, as well as influencing factors on evolution acceptance. Results We found that, despite European countries’ different cultural backgrounds and education systems, European first-year university students generally accept evolution. At the same time, they lack substantial knowledge about it, even if they are enrolled in a biology-related study program. Additionally, we developed a multilevel-model that determines religious faith as the main influencing factor in accepting evolution. According to our model, knowledge about evolution and interest in biological topics also increase acceptance of evolution, but to a much lesser extent than religious faith. The effect of age and sex, as well as the country’s affiliation, students’ denomination, and whether or not a student is enrolled in a biology-related university program, is negligible. Conclusions Our findings indicate that, despite all their differences, most of the European education systems for upper secondary education lead to acceptance of evolution at least in university students. It appears that, at least in this sample, the differences in knowledge between countries reflect neither the extent to which school curricula cover evolutionary biology nor the percentage of biology-related students in the country samples. Future studies should investigate the role of different European school curricula, identify particularly problematic or underrepresented evolutionary concepts in biology education, and analyze the role of religious faith when teaching evolution.

The temperature rising of the photovoltaic (PV) modules is a major issue leading to a reduction in their conversion efficiency and low output power. Therefore, removing heat from the PV module is necessary to permanently work and improve the electrical power output. Serpentine pipes and a thermal absorber plate has proposed with fluid circulation to reduce the PV cell temperature and improve their efficiency. The current work experimentally investigates the effect of using tungsten trioxide (WO3) nanofluids on the PVT system's energy and exergy efficiency at different volume concentrations of 0. 5 vol%, 0. 75 vol%, and 1 vol%. The results indicated an increment in the electrical power output by 11.15 W due to reducing the PV temperature by 21.4% and enhancing the PVT overall efficiency by 29.6% compared with the cooling by Deionized (DI) water. Increasing the volume concentration of nanoparticles increased the Reynolds number, and the Nusselt number enhanced the heat transfer coefficient and increased the pressure drop. Improving the thermal properties of the nanofluid has increased the electrical exergy efficiency and lowered the thermal exergy efficiency due to the reduction in thermal exergy quality. Compared to DI water cooling, exergy losses and entropy generation were reduced by 10% and 34.8%, respectively.

The literary works of several Hungarian authors in Slovakia include a language based on the contact phenomena and regional dialectics of the Hungarian and Slovak languages. This phenomenon is interpreted using the methodological tools of pluricentrism, which serves as a theoretical framework for the linguistic interpretation, and transculturalism, which is a point of departure for literary analysis. Background Individuals’ access to resources is often decided during dyadic contests the outcome of which is determined by the fighting (or competitive) ability of the participants. Individuals’ fighting ability (termed also as resource-holding power or potential, RHP) is usually associated with individual features (e.g., sex, age, body size) and is also frequently signalled through various ornaments like the black throat patch (bib) in many birds. Individual personality is a behavioural attribute often linked to fighting ability as well. Based on earlier studies, however, the relationship between personality and fighting ability is far from being straightforward. While accounting for sex and body size, we studied whether exploratory behaviour, an aspect of personality, predicts fighting ability when competing for food during winter in free-living Eurasian tree sparrows (Passer montanus). We also investigated whether the bib can serve as a potential indicator of individual competitiveness in this species. Methods We captured adult tree sparrows, marked them with a unique combination of colour rings, and collected data about the individuals’ sex, body size, bib size and exploratory behaviour. Birds were then released and the agonistic behaviour of the marked individuals was recorded while foraging in groups on bird feeding platforms. Results The probability of winning a fight, a proxy for fighting ability of individuals, was not related to exploratory behaviour, in either of the sexes. However, bib size was positively related to probability of winning in females, but not in males. Body size was not associated with probability of winning neither in males, nor in females. Conclusions Our results suggest that, at least in tree sparrows, the outcome of dyadic encounters over food during the non-breeding period are not determined by the exploratory personality of individuals. However, our findings provide further support for a status signalling role of the black bib in tree sparrows, and hint for the first time that bib size might function as a status signal in females as well. Finally, our results do not confirm that body size could serve as an indicator of fighting ability (i.e., RHP) in this species.

In this study, Zr-pillared montmorillonite clays (Zr-PILCs) were synthesized using two different precursor materials: raw montmorillonite (CM) and sodium ion-saturated montmorillonite (Na-CM) at different Zr/clay ratios (2.5, 5 and 10 mmol/g). To study the effect of Zr concentration and clay pre-treatment with NaCl on pillaring, the modified clay samples were characterized in detail using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (STEM-EDX). The XRD analysis showed the increase of basal spacing of Zr-PILCs prepared from both precursor materials: from 1.26 to 1.74 nm in the case of CM, and from 1.13 to 1.93 nm for Na-CM. Results from FT-IR revealed new bands ascribed to Zr-O bonds in the range of 400–500 cm−1 in Zr-pillared samples obtained from Na-CM at Zr/clay ratios of 2.5 and 5 mmol/g. The distribution and nature of Zr species in between the silicate layers were studied using STEM-EDX and HAADF imaging. They were found to be separated by a distance of 1.5–3 nm and their thickness lies in the range of 1–2 nm. Pillared clays prepared from pre-treatment with NaCl were more thermally stable at higher temperatures.

In this study tungsten oxide and graphene oxide (GO-WO2.89) were successfully combined using the ultra-sonication method and embedded with polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) to prepare novel low-fouling membranes for ultrafiltration applications. The properties of the modified membranes and performance were investigated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle (CA), water permeation flux, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection. It was found that the modified PPSU membrane fabricated from 0.1 wt.% of GO-WO2.89 possessed the best characteristics, with a 40.82° contact angle and 92.94% porosity. The permeation flux of the best membrane was the highest. The pure water permeation flux of the best membrane showcased 636.01 L·m−2·h−1 with 82.86% BSA rejection. Moreover, the membranes (MR-2 and MR-P2) manifested a higher flux recovery ratio (FRR %) of 92.66 and 87.06%, respectively, and were less prone to BSA solution fouling. The antibacterial performance of the GO-WO2.89 composite was very positive with three different concentrations, observed via the bacteria count method. These results significantly overtake those observed by neat PPSU membranes and offer a promising potential of GO-WO2.89 on activity membrane performance.

The emergence of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) or nanocomposite membranes embedded with inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) has opened up a possibility for developing different polymeric membranes with improved physicochemical properties, mechanical properties and performance for resolving environmental and energy-effective water purification. This paper presents an overview of the effects of different hydrophilic nanomaterials, including mineral nanomaterials (e.g., silicon dioxide (SiO2) and zeolite), metals oxide (e.g., copper oxide (CuO), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), zinc oxide (ZnO), antimony tin oxide (ATO), iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3) and tungsten oxide (WOX)), two-dimensional transition (e.g., MXene), metal–organic framework (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and carbon-based nanomaterials (such as carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide (GO)). The influence of these nanoparticles on the surface and structural changes in the membrane is thoroughly discussed, in addition to the performance efficiency and antifouling resistance of the developed membranes. Recently, GO has shown a considerable capacity in wastewater treatment. This is due to its nanometer-sized holes, ultrathin layer and light and sturdy nature. Therefore, we discuss the effect of the addition of hydrophilic GO in neat form or hyper with other nanoparticles on the properties of different polymeric membranes. A hybrid composite of various NPs has a distinctive style and high-quality products can be designed to allow membrane technology to grow and develop. Hybrid composite NPs could be used on a large scale in the future due to their superior mechanical qualities. A summary and future prospects are offered based on the current discoveries in the field of mixed matrix membranes. This review presents the current progress of mixed matrix membranes, the challenges that affect membrane performance and recent applications for wastewater treatment systems.

Carbon foams have gained significant attention due to their tuneable properties that enable a wide range of applications including catalysis, energy storage and wastewater treatment. Novel synthesis pathways enable novel applications via yielding complex, hierarchical material structure. In this work, activated carbon foams (ACFs) were produced from waste polyurethane elastomer templates using different synthesis pathways, including a novel one-step method. Uniquely, the produced foams exhibited complex structure and contained carbon microspheres. The ACFs were synthesized by impregnating the elastomers in an acidified sucrose solution followed by direct activation using CO2 at 1000 ℃. Different pyrolysis and activation conditions were investigated. The ACFs were characterized by a high specific surface area (SBET) of 2172 m2/g and an enhanced pore volume of 1.08 cm3/g. Computer tomography and morphological studies revealed an inhomogeneous porous structure and the presence of numerous carbon spheres of varying sizes embedded in the porous network of the three-dimensional carbon foam. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the obtained carbon foam was amorphous and of turbostratic structure. Moreover, the activation process enhanced the surface of the carbon foam, making it more hydrophilic via altering pore size distribution and introducing oxygen functional groups. In equilibrium, the adsorption of methylene blue on ACF followed the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 592 mg/g. Based on these results, the produced ACFs have potential applications as adsorbents, catalyst support and electrode material in energy storage systems.

The novel photoactive membranes have grabbed the attention in the field of environmental protection by employing wastewater treatments and the removal of microorganisms or organic pollutants from wastewater. Here we present a promising self-supported photoactive hybrid membrane for future antimicrobial and water treatment applications. In this study, the efficiency of bacterial cellulose (BC) - zinc oxide (ZnO) - multi walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid membranes in the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV radiation and the removal of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was investigated. It was found that the photocatalytic efficiency is strongly dependent on both the preparation method and the amount of ZnO-MWCNT additives loaded into the hybrid membranes. The characterization of BC-ZnO-MWCNT membranes was done using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), and X-ray micro computed tomography (μCT) to study the morphological and porosity aspect of the prepared-membranes. The promising results of this study could provide a new pathway in the field of photocatalysed-based water treatment technology by the application of hybrid membranes.

Self-supported and flexible bacterial cellulose (BC) based hybrid membranes were synthesized and decorated with zinc oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (ZnO–MWCNT) composite additives in order to modify and tune their surface and bulk properties. Two types of ZnO–MWCNT additives with different morphologies were used in a wide concentration range from 0 to 90% for BC-based hybrids produced by filtration. The interaction between BC and ZnO–MWCNT and the effect of concentration and morphology of additives on the properties like zeta potential, hydrophilicity, electrical conductivity, etc. would be an important factor in various applications. Furthermore, the as-prepared hybrid membranes were characterized with the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and surface area measurement (BET). Applying the presented synthesis routes, the surface properties of BC-based membranes can be tailored easily. Results reveal that the as-prepared BC–ZnO–MWCNT hybrid membranes can be ideal candidates for different kinds of applications, such as water filtration or catalysts.

Nowadays, the use of hybrid structures and multi-component materials is gaining ground in the fields of environmental protection, water treatment and removal of organic pollutants. This study describes promising, cheap and photoactive self-supported hybrid membranes as a possible solution for wastewater treatment applications. In the course of this research work, the photocatalytic performance of titania nanowire (TiO2 NW)-based hybrid membranes in the adsorption and degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation was investigated. Characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD) were used to study the morphology and surface of the as-prepared hybrid membranes. We tested the photocatalytic efficiency of the as-prepared membranes in decomposing methylene blue (MB) under UV light irradiation. The hybrid membranes achieved the removal of MB with a degradation efficiency of 90% in 60 min. The high efficiency can be attributed to the presence of binary components in the membrane that enhanced both the adsorption capability and the photocatalytic ability of the membranes. The results obtained suggest that multicomponent hybrid membranes could be promising candidates for future photocatalysis-based water treatment technologies that also take into account the principles of circular economy.

Glassy carbon foam (GCF) catalyst supports were synthesized from waste polyurethane elastomers by impregnating them in sucrose solution followed by pyrolysis and activation (AC) using N2 and CO2 gas. The palladium nanoparticles were formed from Pd(NO3)2. The formed palladium nanoparticles are highly dispersive because the mean diameters are 8.0 ± 4.3 (Pd/GCF), 7.6 ± 4.2 (Pd/GCF-AC1) and 4.4 ± 1.6 nm (Pd/GCF-AC2). Oxidative post-treatment by CO2 of the supports resulted in the formation of hydroxyl groups on the GCF surfaces, leading to a decrease in zeta potential. The decreased zeta potential increased the wettability of the GCF supports. This, and the interactions between –OH groups and Pd ions, decreased the particle size of palladium. The catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. The non-treated, glassy-carbon-supported catalyst (Pd/GCF) resulted in a 99.2% aniline yield at 293 K and 50 bar hydrogen pressure, but the reaction was slightly slower than other catalysts. The catalysts on the post-treated (activated) supports showed higher catalytic activity and the rate of hydrogenation was higher. The maximum attained aniline selectivities were 99.0% (Pd/GCF-AC1) at 293 K and 98.0% (Pd/GCF-AC2) at 323 K.

The appearance of the 1989 political transformation in Central European prose The study is interpreting the common experiences of (Eastern) Central European literatures, whose common factors are the dictatorship lasting over forty years, 1989 as the turning point, and the post-communist era. I analyse the following Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian and Slovak Hungarian books: Dorota Masłowska Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną (Polish-Russian war under the white and red flag) (2002), Jáchym Topol Anděl (Angel) (1995), Eman Erdélyi, Marek Vadas Univerzita (University) (1996), Oliver Bakoš Katedra paupológie (The Paupology Department) (2001), Attila Györy Kitörés (Breaking out) (1993), János Térey Termann hagyományai (Termann’s Traditions) (1997) and Attila Hazai Szex a nappaliban (Sex in the Living Room) (2000). The theoretical boom of the 90s and the new, determining Central-Eastern-European status of theory is a common experience in Eastern-Central-European literary theory and literature. Another great experience of post-89 Eastern-Central-European prose is travelling and the meeting of cultures. The topos of being en route seems essential in the European novel, and most often, the stages of the protagonist’s development are linked to the sections of the road travelled. In post-1989 Eastern-Central European prose, drugs are major referential candidates. Drugs became part of the post-89 folklore; for the societies awakening behind the iron curtain, especially for the young generations, they are identified with freedom or, more precisely, with its anarchistic concept. The study analyses the common socio-cultural characteristics in the post-89 Eastern-Central-European prose.

Membrane separation is proved to be a powerful tool for several applications such as wastewater treatment or the elimination of various microorganisms from drinking water. In this study, the efficiency of inorganic composite-based multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) hybrid membranes was investigated in the removal of MS2 bacteriophages from contaminated water. With this object, multi-walled carbon nanotubes were coated with copper(I) oxide, titanium(IV) oxide and iron(III) oxide nanoparticles, respectively, and their virus removal capability was tested in both batch and flow experiments. Considering the possible pH range of drinking water, the filtration tests were carried out at pH 5.0, 7.5 and 9.0 as well. The extent of MS2 removal strongly depended on the pH values for each composite, which can be due to electrostatic interactions between the membrane and the virus. The most efficient removal (greater than or equal to 99.99%) was obtained with the Cu2O-coated MWCNT membrane in the whole pH range. The fabricated nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, specific surface area measurement, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. This study presents a simple route to design novel and effective nanocomposite-based hybrid membranes for virus removal.

Hormones play an important role in the regulation of physiological, developmental and behavioural processes. Many of these mechanisms in insects, however, are still not well understood. One way to investigate hormonal regulation is to analyse gene expression patterns of hormones and their receptors by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). This method, however, requires stably expressed reference genes for normalisation. In the present study, we evaluated 11 candidate housekeeping genes as reference genes in samples of Lethrus apterus, an earth-boring beetle with biparental care, collected from a natural population. For identifying the most stable genes we used the following computational methods: geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, comparative delta Ct method and RefFinder. Based on our results, the two body regions sampled (head and thorax) differ in which genes are most stably expressed. We identified two candidate reference genes for each region investigated: ribosomal protein L7A and RP18 in samples extracted from the head, and ribosomal protein L7A and RP4 extracted from the muscles of the thorax. Additionally, L7A and RP18 appear to be the best reference genes for normalisation in all samples irrespective of body region. These reference genes can be used to study the hormonal regulation of reproduction and parental care in Lethrus apterus in the future.

Aspergillus nidulans has one gene for alternative oxidase (EC 1.10.3.11). To investigate the relationship between this mitochondrial terminal oxidase and the formation of the mycotoxin sterigmatocystin, the encoding aodA gene was both deleted and overexpressed. Relative to the wild-type, the cyanide-resistant fraction of respiration in the late stationary stage—when sterigmatocystin production occurs—doubled in the overexpressing mutant carrying three aodA gene copies, but decreased to 10% in the deletant. Essentially identical results were obtained regardless whether the cultures were illuminated or protected from light. In contrast, sterigmatocystin yield in the aodA deletant was about half of that in the control when grown in the dark, while aodA overexpression resulted in up to 70% more sterigmatocystin formed, the yield increasing with alternative oxidase activity. Results were quite different when cultures were illuminated: under those conditions, sterigmatocystin volumetric yields were considerably lower, and statistically unvarying, regardless of the presence, absence, or the copy number of aodA. We conclude that the copy number of aodA, and hence, the balance between alternative- and cytochrome C-mediated respiration, appears to correlate with sterigmatocystin production in A. nidulans, albeit only in the absence of light.

Trichoderma reesei is the industrial producer of cellulases and hemicellulases for biorefinery processes. Their expression is obligatorily dependent on the function of the protein methyltransferase LAE1. The Aspergillus nidulans orthologue of LAE1--LaeA--is part of the VELVET protein complex consisting of LaeA, VeA and VelB that regulates secondary metabolism and sexual as well as asexual reproduction. Here we have therefore investigated the function of VEL1, the T. reesei orthologue of A. nidulans VeA. Deletion of the T. reesei vel1 locus causes a complete and light-independent loss of conidiation, and impairs formation of perithecia. Deletion of vel1 also alters hyphal morphology towards hyperbranching and formation of thicker filaments, and with consequently reduced growth rates. Growth on lactose as a sole carbon source, however, is even more strongly reduced and growth on cellulose as a sole carbon source eliminated. Consistent with these findings, deletion of vel1 completely impaired the expression of cellulases, xylanases and the cellulase regulator XYR1 on lactose as a cellulase inducing carbon source, but also in resting mycelia with sophorose as inducer. Our data show that in T. reesei VEL1 controls sexual and asexual development, and this effect is independent of light. VEL1 is also essential for cellulase gene expression, which is consistent with the assumption that their regulation by LAE1 occurs by the VELVET complex.

Predicting how migratory animals respond to changing climatic conditions requires knowledge of how climatic events affect each phase of the annual cycle and how those effects carry-over to subsequent phases. We utilized a 17-year migration dataset to examine how El Niño-Southern Oscillation climatic events in geographically different regions of the Western hemisphere carry-over to impact the stopover biology of several intercontinental migratory bird species. We found that migratory birds that over-wintered in South America experienced significantly drier environments during El Niño years, as reflected by reduced Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values, and arrived at stopover sites in reduced energetic condition during spring migration. During El Niño years migrants were also more likely to stopover immediately along the northern Gulf coast of the southeastern U.S. after crossing the Gulf of Mexico in small suboptimal forest patches where food resources are lower and migrant density often greater than larger more contiguous forests further inland. In contrast, NDVI values did not differ between El Niño and La Niña years in Caribbean-Central America, and we found no difference in energetic condition or use of coastal habitats for migrants en route from Caribbean-Central America wintering areas. Birds over-wintering in both regions had consistent median arrival dates along the northern Gulf coast, suggesting that there is a strong drive for birds to maintain their time program regardless of their overall condition. We provide strong evidence that not only is the stopover biology of migratory landbirds influenced by events during the previous phase of their life-cycle, but where migratory birds over-winter determines how vulnerable they are to global climatic cycles. Increased frequency and intensity of ENSO events over the coming decades, as predicted by climatic models, may disproportionately influence long-distance migrants over-wintering in South America.

Seed contamination with polyketide mycotoxins such as sterigmatocystin (ST) produced by Aspergilli is a worldwide issue. The ST biosynthetic pathway is well-characterized in A. nidulans, but regulatory aspects related to the carbon source are still enigmatic. This is particularly true for lactose, inasmuch as some ST production mutant strains still synthesize ST on lactose but not on other carbon substrates. Here, kinetic data revealed that on d-glucose, ST forms only after the sugar is depleted from the medium, while on lactose, ST appears when most of the carbon source is still available. Biomass-specified ST production on lactose was significantly higher than on d-glucose, suggesting that ST formation may either be mediated by a carbon catabolite regulatory mechanism, or induced by low specific growth rates attainable on lactose. These hypotheses were tested by d-glucose limited chemostat-type continuous fermentations. No ST formed at a high growth rate, while a low growth rate led to the formation of 0.4 mg·L−1 ST. Similar results were obtained with a CreA mutant strain. We concluded that low specific growth rates may be the primary cause of mid-growth ST formation on lactose in A. nidulans, and that carbon utilization rates likely play a general regulatory role during biosynthesis.
