Search

High-resolution temperature reconstructions in the previous millennium are limited in Northeast Asia, but they are important for assessing regional climate dynamics. Here, we present, for the first time, a 202-year reliable reconstruction of April temperature changes before the millennium volcanic eruption in 946 CE using tree rings of carbonized logs buried in the tephra in Changbai Mountain, Northeast Asia. The reconstructed temperature changes were consistent with previous reconstructions in China and the Northern Hemisphere. The influences of large-scale oscillations (e.g. El Niño–Southern Oscillation, ENSO) on temperature variability were not significantly different between the periods of 745–946 CE preceding the eruption and 1883–2012. However, compared to the palaeotemperature of the previous millennium, the temperature changes were more complex with stronger temperature fluctuations, more frequent temperature abruption, and a weaker periodicity of temperature variance during the last 130 years. These recent changes correspond to long-term anthropogenic influences on regional climate.

These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1-km2 resolution for 0–5 and 5–15 cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1-km2 p ixels ( summarized f rom 8 519 u nique t emperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse-grained air temperature estimates from ERA5-Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C (mean = 3.0 ± 2.1°C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6 ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (−0.7 ± 2.3°C). The observed substantial and biome-specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near-surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil-related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Climate change and other global change drivers threaten plant diversity in mountains worldwide. A widely documented response to such environmental modifications is for plant species to change their elevational ranges. Range shifts are often idiosyncratic and difficult to generalize, partly due to variation in sampling methods. There is thus a need for a standardized monitoring strategy that can be applied across mountain regions to assess distribution changes and community turnover of native and non‐native plant species over space and time. Here, we present a conceptually intuitive and standardized protocol developed by the Mountain Invasion Research Network (MIREN) to systematically quantify global patterns of native and non‐native species distributions along elevation gradients and shifts arising from interactive effects of climate change and human disturbance. Usually repeated every five years, surveys consist of 20 sample sites located at equal elevation increments along three replicate roads per sampling region. At each site, three plots extend from the side of a mountain road into surrounding natural vegetation. The protocol has been successfully used in 18 regions worldwide from 2007 to present. Analyses of one point in time already generated some salient results, and revealed region‐specific elevational patterns of native plant species richness, but a globally consistent elevational decline in non‐native species richness. Non‐native plants were also more abundant directly adjacent to road edges, suggesting that disturbed roadsides serve as a vector for invasions into mountains. From the upcoming analyses of time series, even more exciting results can be expected, especially about range shifts. Implementing the protocol in more mountain regions globally would help to generate a more complete picture of how global change alters species distributions. This would inform conservation policy in mountain ecosystems, where some conservation policies remain poorly implemented. We summarize the findings achieved with the standardized sampling protocol developed by the Mountain Invasion Research Network (MIREN) for monitoring the impact of global change on elevational plant species distributions. We intend to promote the use of the protocol to generate global insights into native and non‐native species responses to rapid global change in mountains.

Research in environmental science relies heavily on global climatic grids derived from estimates of air temperature at around 2 meter above ground1-3. These climatic grids however fail to reflect conditions near and below the soil surface, where critical ecosystem functions such as soil carbon storage are controlled and most biodiversity resides4-8. By using soil temperature time series from over 8500 locations across all of the world’s terrestrial biomes4, we derived global maps of soil temperature-related variables at 1 km resolution for the 0–5 and 5–15 cm depth horizons. Based on these maps, we show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding 2 m gridded air temperature, by up to 10°C, with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Soils in cold and/or dry biomes are annually substantially warmer (3.6°C ± 2.3°C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are slightly cooler (0.7 ± 2.3°C). As a result, annual soil temperature varies less (by 17%) across the globe than air temperature. The effect of macroclimatic conditions on the difference between soil and air temperature highlights the importance of considering that macroclimate warming may not result in the same level of soil temperature warming. Similarly, changes in precipitation could alter the relationship between soil and air temperature, with implications for soil-atmosphere feedbacks9. Our results underpin that the impacts of climate and climate change on biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments.

Alpine ecosystems are highly sensitive to global warming, and treeline shifts are a dramatic consequence of climate change. The alpine treelines are rapidly shifting upwards globally. We aimed to better understand what are the global warming effects behind the rapid upward shift of the alpine treeline. Specifically, we ask how climate change affects seedling recruitment and growth sensitivity. We found that summer warming attributed to rapid seedling recruitment beyond the alpine treeline, whereas stem radial growth sensitivity did not change with warming. Thus, the rapid upward migration of the alpine treeline is mainly caused by summer warming, and tree growth at and beyond treeline are likely to increase. Changes in precipitation, and in particular heavy precipitation extremes, have wide-ranging implications for society particularly in a changing climate. However, the impacts of these changes can be sensitive to how precipitation accumulates over time and, for example, large-scale disastrous flooding is often associated with extreme precipitation persisting over several days. Little is known about how the temporal sequencing of precipitation is expected to change under global warming. This lack of knowledge is alarming given the link between multi-day extreme precipitation and flooding catastrophes.We address this gap, and focus on a previously neglected aspect of precipitation, by studying changes in temporally clustered extreme precipitation (that is, extreme precipitation occurring on consecutive days), based on a unique quasi-global database of observational records (5989 high-quality stations with long-term daily precipitation during 1961-2010) and climate model simulations. We now share the calculated monthly/seasonal/annual indices of precipitation so that our results can be easily be verified with these opened observationaldata. The specific definition and calculation of these indices could be found in the paper. Researchers who use these data are required to cite our paper.
