Land surface temperature (LST) serves as a crucial indicator of the thermal state and environmental changes on the Earth’s surface, and it can be retrieved effectively from satellite thermal infrared sensors. Although algorithms for retrieving LSTs have been developed successfully for many satellites, the newly launched Sustainable Development Science Satellite 1 (SDGSAT-1), which includes three thermal infrared bands, does not yet include effective LST algorithms and parameters. Here, parameters are calibrated for retrieving LSTs from SDGSAT-1 Thermal Infrared Spectrometer (TIS) data for the split-window (SW) method and the three-channel (TC) method under both daytime and nighttime conditions. In this process, the Thermodynamic Initial Guess Retrieval (TIGR) dataset and observation data from the University of Wyoming were used. Validations were conducted using in situ LST measurements at the Guantao, Turpan, and Heihe sites in China and from the Surface Radiation Budget (SURFRAD) network in North America, covering cropland, desert and bare land, and grassland. The overall accuracies of the models are fairly good, with RMSEs of 2.507 K and 2.272 K for split-window method during daytime and nighttime respectively, and 2.847 K and 1.923 K for three-channel method. Additionally, the LST retrieval models that use observation data from the University of Wyoming had higher accuracy than those using the TIGR2000 profiles. Currently, the proposed models can be applied under different atmospheric water vapor contents and underlying surface conditions both during the day and at night, paving the way for retrieving LST products from SDGSAT-1.

Water storage dynamics in on-farm reservoirs (OFRs) are crucial for irrigation water allocation and utilization, ensuring agricultural development sustainability. Previous studies have primarily relied on the area-storage model to estimate reservoir water storage using meter-level remotely sensed data, which often falls short of accurately capturing the water storage dynamics of OFRs, especially in small OFRs with steep slopes. Hence, we proposed a method to estimate the water storage of OFRs in irrigation areas by integrating multispectral drone data, high-resolution remote sensing data, and ground observations. The water surface area was extracted from multispectral drone data using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and a threshold segmentation method. Slope gradients were then obtained by identifying the maximum potential slope zone (PSZ) and utilizing high-resolution drone-based Digital Surface Models (DSMs). The dam slopes of the constructed boundaries were automatically computed considering the significant decline of slope gradients. By combining the dam slopes of the OFRs with water depth observations, we estimated the construction depth (H). Subsequently, current water depth was obtained using drone-derived Digital Surface Models (DSMs), calculating the elevation difference between drone-derived OFRs and water surface boundary. Once the OFR morphology was fully constructed, the water storage was calculated based on area-storage and depth-storage methods using the 3D volume module in Arcpy. The derived water storage agrees well with in situ observation (R2: 0.99) using slope gradients, reaching an overall accuracy of 95.2 %, with a root mean square error (RMSE) and a mean absolute error (MAE) of 2785 m3 and 1820 m3, respectively. Notably, discernible fluctuations in water storage were observed during the main irrigation phases, highlighting the essential role of OFRs in promoting equitable water resource distribution and enhancing irrigation water management. This integrated approach offers a robust solution for monitoring and managing water storage dynamics in agricultural areas.

Drought is a perilous agrometeorological phenomenon that often causes crop damage in arid and semiarid regions vulnerable to climate variability. However, accurate drought monitoring remains deficient in many countries, including Kyrgyzstan, and the interconnections between several types of drought and contributions to crop yield are still unclear. Hence, we aimed to determine the propagation time in three types of drought (meteorological drought, soil drought, and vegetation drought) for understanding interconnections of them. Moreover, we focused on comprehensively evaluation the performance of multiple drought indices for each type over the complex terrain of Kyrgyzstan, especially for drought index of synergistic land surface temperature and vegetation conditions information. The results demonstrated that standard precipitation index (SPI) effectively detected meteorological drought, while the vegetation health index (VHI) coupled with temperature data was optimal for vegetation drought monitoring in Kyrgyzstan. Furthermore, our findings indicated a 1-month response time for soil drought at a 10 cm depth to SPI, and a 4-month response time at a 40 cm depth to meteorological drought (SPI). The response time of VHI to soil drought condition index (SMCI) was approximately 1 month, regardless of whether the soil drought occurred at a depth of 10 or 40 cm. In general, the response time of VHI to SPI was 3 months. Finally, by analyzing the correlation between crop yield productivity and drought indices, we discovered that the crop yield predictions by the three types of drought were differential and complex, but VHI was the most effective index. At the same time, VHIacc(May–Sep.), SMCIr(0–40 cm)_May–Sep., and SPI5_Aug. have different contributions to crop yield variations, and these are also differences in their impacts on different crops and provinces. The synergistic effect of the three types of drought may significantly improve crop yield prediction in Kyrgyzstan in future studies. These findings may significantly contribute to drought prevention and mitigation in drought-prone Central Asian countries.

Fusion of thermal infrared (TIR) and passive microwave (PMW) observations are important techniques for estimating all-weather land surface temperature (LST) of relatively higher resolutions. For such fusion techniques under cloudy weather, PMW observations are especially useful in correcting the cloud-shadowing bias of the real cloudy LST against a theoretically clear-sky one in the daytime. However, PMW observations have very limited transit times in a day, and cannot be fused with asynchronous TIR data as LST can vary significantly during the daytime. To overcome this flaw, we developed a model for simulating the variation of cloud-shadowing bias based on cloud total amount (CTA) information observed by geostationary satellites. As constant coefficients of the model were found to have dependence on space and time, they were dynamically fitted for each pixel in each month using cloud-shadowing bias calculated by TIR and synchronous PMW data in the early-afternoon (1:30 P.M.). The model was then used to provide middle-morning (10:30 A.M.) cloud-shadowing bias estimates, based on which, all-weather LST at 1 km were produced at that specific moment. Validation results show that reconstructed cloudy LST in the middle-morning, with no synchronous PMW observations, has its overall RMSE values against ground measurements and real remote sensing data under cloud between 2.4 and 4.0 K. This accuracy result is generally comparable to that obtained through fusing information from synchronous PMW data in the early-afternoon moment. Therefore, it is prospective to be further applied for generating high-resolution all-weather LST with much shorter re-visit cycles than the satellite PMW data.

Albedo is one of the key parameters in the surface energy balance and it has been altered due to urban expansion, which has significant impacts on local and regional climate. Many previous studies have demonstrated that changes in the urban surface albedo are strongly related to the city’s heterogeneity and have significant spatial-temporal characteristics but fail to address the albedo of the urban surface as a unique variable in urban thermal environment research. This study selects Beijing as the experimental area for exploring the spatial-temporal characteristics of the urban surface albedo and the albedo’s uniqueness in environmental research on urban spaces. Our results show that the urban surface albedo at high spatial resolution can better represent the urban spatial heterogeneity, seasonal variation, building canyon, and pixel adjacency effects. Urban surface albedo is associated with building density and height, land surface temperature (LST), and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). Furthermore, albedo can reflect livability and environmental rating due to the variances of building materials and architectural formats in the urban development. Hence, we argue that the albedo of the urban surface can be considered as a unique variable for improving the acknowledgment of the urban environment and human livability with wider application in urban environmental research.

Drought is one of the most common natural threats to agricultural production worldwide. Few studies have studied the effects of agricultural practices on drought mitigation at a regional scale over a long period. This paper analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics in the agricultural drought-affected area change index (ADAC), which was developed to assess the drought mitigation. The linear regression method was used to investigate the impact factors on the change of ADAC in the three main winter wheat provinces of northern China. The results showed that the average ADAC during the main growing season in the study area was approximately −61.5% over the past 38 years, which indicated a great decrease of the agricultural drought-affected area. The significant decreasing trends of ADAC values across the study area during 1981–2000 could be explained by the area percentage equipped for irrigation (APEI) by 49.2–89.7%. There was a lack of pronounced change trends of ADAC during 2001–2018, implying that the positive effects of irrigation infrastructure in the plain area might reach a plateau under the constraints of available water resources, and other agricultural practices need to be investigated in the future. This research provides helpful decision information on drought adaptation management and water conservation project planning.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is the primary mechanism of water transformation between the land surface and atmosphere. Accurate ET estimation given complex terrain conditions is essential to guide water resource management in mountainous areas. This study is based on the ETWatch model driven by Sentinel-2 remote sensing data at a spatial resolution of 10 m incorporating a net radiation model considering the impact of a complex terrain. We tested our model with two years of data in two regions with a high relief near the Huairou (2020) and Baotianman (2019) weather stations. Regarding the validation results of the ET model, the coefficient of determination (R2) reached 0.84 in Huairou and 0.86 in Baotianman, while the root mean square error (RMSE) value reached 0.59 mm in Baotianman and 0.82 mm in Huairou. The validation results indicated that the model is applicable in regions with a complex terrain, and the ET results can capture topographic textures. In terms of the slope aspect, the ET value on south-facing slopes is higher than that on north-facing slopes in both study areas. Accurate ET monitoring in mountainous regions with a high relief yields a profound meaning in obtaining a better understanding of the characteristics of heat and water fluxes at different vegetation growth stages and underlying surface types, which can provide constructive suggestions for water management in mountainous areas.

Grassland species diversity monitoring is essential to grassland resource protection and utilization. “Spectral variation hypothesis” (SVH) provides a remote sensing method for monitoring grassland species diversity at pixel scale by calculating spectral heterogeneity. However, the pixel spectrum is easily affected by soil and other background factors in natural grassland. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based imaging spectroscopy provides the possibility of soil information removal by virtue of its high spatial and spectral resolution. In this study, UAV-imaging spectroscopy data with a spatial resolution of 0.2 m obtained in two sites of typical alpine steppe within the Sanjiangyuan National Nature Reserve were used to analyze the relationships between four spectral diversity metrics (coefficient of variation based on NDVI (CVNDVI), coefficient of variation based on multiple bands (CVMulti), minimum convex hull volume (CHV) and minimum convex hull area (CHA)) and two species diversity indices (species richness and the Shannon–Wiener index). Meanwhile, two soil removal methods (based on NDVI threshold and the linear spectral unmixing model) were used to investigate the impact of soil on species diversity estimation. The results showed that the Shannon–Wiener index had a better response to spectral diversity than species richness, and CVMulti showed the best correlation with the Shannon–Wiener index between the four spectral diversity metrics after removing soil information using the linear spectral unmixing model. It indicated that the estimation ability of spectral diversity to species diversity was significantly improved after removing the soil information. Our findings demonstrated the applicability of the spectral variation hypothesis in natural grassland, and illustrated the impact of soil on species diversity estimation.

Global climate change and human activities have resulted in immense changes in the Earth’s ecosystem, and the interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere is one of the most important processes. Wind is a reference for studying atmospheric dynamics and climate change, analyzing the wind speed change characteristics in historical periods, and studying the influence of wind on the Earth-atmosphere interaction; additionally, studying the wind, contributes to analyzing and alleviating a series of problems, such as the energy crisis, environmental pollution, and ecological deterioration facing human beings. In this study, data from 697 meteorological stations in China from 2000 to 2019 were used to study the distribution and trend of wind speed over the past two decades. The relationships between wind speed and climate factors were explored using statistical methods; furthermore, combined with terrain, climate change, and human activities, we quantified the contribution of environmental factors to wind speed. The results show that a downward trend was recorded before 2011, but overall, there was an increasing trend that was not significant; moreover, the wind speed changes showed obvious seasonality and were more complicated on the monthly scale. The wind speed trend mainly increased in the western region, decreased in the eastern region, was higher in the northeastern, northwestern, and coastal areas, and was lower in the central area. Temperature, bright sunshine duration, evaporation, and precipitation had a strong influence, in which wind speed showed a significant negative correlation with temperature and precipitation and vice versa for sunshine and evapotranspiration. The influence of environmental factors is diverse, and these results could help to develop environmental management strategies across ecologically fragile areas and improve the design of wind power plants to make better use of wind energy.

Cropland evapotranspiration (ET) is the major source of water consumption in agricultural systems. The precise management of agricultural ET helps optimize water resource usage in arid and semiarid regions and requires field-scale ET data support. Due to the combined limitations of satellite sensors and ET mechanisms, the current high-resolution ET models need further refinement to meet the demands of field-scale ET management. In this research, we proposed a new field-scale ET estimation method by developing an allocation factor to quantify field-level ET variations and allocate coarse ET to the field scale. By regarding the agricultural field as the object of the ET parcel, the allocation factor is calculated with combined high-resolution remote sensing indexes indicating the field-level ET variations under different crop growth and land-surface water conditions. The allocation ET results are validated at two ground observation stations and show improved accuracy compared with that of the original coarse data. This allocated ET model provides reasonable spatial results of field-level ET and is adequate for precise agricultural ET management. This allocation method provides new insight into calculating field-level ET from coarse ET datasets and meets the demands of wide application for controlling regional water consumption, supporting the ET management theory in addressing the impacts of water scarcity on social and economic developments.

Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the components in the water cycle and the surface energy balance systems. It is fundamental information for agriculture, water resource management, and climate change research. This study presents a scheme for regional actual evapotranspiration estimation using multi-source satellite data to compute key land and meteorological variables characterizing land surface, soil, vegetation, and the atmospheric boundary layer. The algorithms are validated using ground observations from the Heihe River Basin of northwest China. Monthly data estimates at a resolution of 1 km from the proposed algorithms compared well with ground observation data, with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.80 mm and a mean relative error (MRE) of −7.11%. The overall deviation between the average yearly ET derived from the proposed algorithms and ground-based water balance measurements was 9.44% for a small watershed and 1% for the entire basin. This study demonstrates that both accuracy and spatial depiction of actual evapotranspiration estimation can be significantly improved by using multi-source satellite data to measure the required land surface and meteorological variables. This reduces dependence on spatial interpolation of ground-derived meteorological variables which can be problematic, especially in data-sparse regions, and allows the production of region-wide ET datasets.

Sunshine duration is an important indicator of the amount of solar radiation received in a region and an important input parameter for the study of atmospheric energy balance, climate change, ecosystem evolution, and social sustainability. Currently, extrapolation and interpolation of data from meteorological stations are the most common methods used to calculate sunshine duration on a regional scale. However, it is difficult to obtain high precision sunshine duration in areas lacking ground observation or where sunshine duration is highly heterogeneous on the ground. In this paper, a new method is proposed to estimate sunshine duration with hourly total cloud amount (CTA) data from sunrise to sunset derived from the Fengyun-2G geostationary meteorological satellite (FY-2G). This method constructs a new index known as daytime mean total cloud coverage amount and provides quadratic equations relating daytime mean total cloud coverage amount to relative sunshine duration in different seasons. The method was validated with ground observation data for 2016 from 18 meteorological stations in the Three-River Headwaters Region of Qinghai Province, China. For individual stations, the coefficient of determination (R2) between estimated and measured sunshine was at least 0.894, the RMSE (root mean square error) was 0.977 h/day or less, the MAE (mean absolute error) was 0.824 h/day or less, the RE (relative error) was 0.150 or lower, and the value of d was 0.963 or greater, which validated that the proposed method can effectively predict daily sunshine duration. These equations can also provide higher precision estimates of regional-scale sunshine duration. This was demonstrated by comparing, for the entire study region, the spatial distribution of sunshine duration estimated from season-based equations with results from three different interpolation methods based on ground observations. Overall, the study confirms that total cloud amount measures from a geostationary satellite can be used to successfully estimate sunshine duration.
