Nb-lean Cu–Cr–Nb alloys have been widely applied in electrical industries as the structural conductive material owing to their excellent combination of the mechanical and electrical properties at room temperature. In this work, the influence of temperature during fast sintering and post-heat treatment strategies on the precipitate evolution and room temperature mechanical properties of the Cu–3Cr-0.5Nb (wt.%) alloy was investigated. The increasing sintering temperature will improve the density and mechanical properties of the alloy without any obvious grain growth during this non-equilibrium process, while the post-aging at lower and higher temperatures can effectively control the formation and coarsening process of the Cr-based precipitates. Systematic characterization was then conducted on the microstructural evolution, especially the altering precipitates’ size and distribution, in the alloy at both as-sintered and the aged conditions, which is correlated to its room temperature tensile properties. Lower aging temperature will induce the nucleation of the new Cr2Nb precipitates without causing a significant coarsening of the existing precipitates like aging at higher temperature. Therefore, the low-temp. aged sample exhibits the highest tensile strength and elongation due to the enhanced Orowan strengthening mechanism induced by its unique precipitate microstructure.

Oxide dispersion strengthened tungsten (ODS-W) alloy was prepared by chemical method, conventional sintering and hot-rolling method, which breaks through the research bottleneck of preparing tungsten alloys with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. More specifically, it can exhibit ultrahigh strength and superior toughness when tested at 200°C. In addition, the nil ductility temperature (NDT) can also dramatically decrease to 100–150°C. The bimodal structure formed by the uneven distribution of yttria and the lamellar structure formed by hot rolling in this ODS-W alloy provide a feasible way to develop other engineering materials with ultra-high strength and ductility.

The lack of filler materials is the crucial issue that restricts the wide application of the advanced heat-resistance steel G115 in ultra-super critical (USC) power plants. In the present work, a new welding filler material with alloying system of 8.8Cr-2.7W-2.8Co was successfully developed to fabricate the G115 steel welded joint by the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), and post weld heat treatments (PWHT) involving different temperatures were proposed to tailor the mechanical properties. The filler material exhibited perfect compatibility with the base material (BM), and the manufactured welded joint displayed satisfactory appearance and defect-free weld section. After PWHT, full martensitic lath structure decorated with high density of dislocations and dispersed strengthening precipitates M23C6 and MX formed in the weld metal (WM), which was similar with that of the BM. Meanwhile, the welded joint was sensitive to the PWHT temperature, and an optimal combination of hardness (∼240 HV), tensile strength (∼679.9 MPa at 25 °C, and ∼344.6 MPa at 650 °C), elongation (∼13.1% at 25 °C, and ∼15.6% at 650 °C) and impact toughness (∼73.8 J/cm2) could be achieved after PWHT at 760 °C for 240 min. Comprehensively considering the obtained results, the designed filler material was feasible and reliable for matching the novel G115 steel, and satisfied the service demands of the G115 steel pipes in USC power plants.

Aggregation and coarsening of the second-phase oxide particles at grain boundaries have been a bottleneck for improving mechanical properties of oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys. Here the authors employ core-shell nanopowder precursors to achieve uniform dispersion of oxides in ODS alloys.

In this work, twin wire arc additive manufacturing (T-WAAM) combined with in-situ alloying method was developed to fabricate multi-element alloys, and biomedical Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy with a good combination of strength and ductility was successfully fabricated for the first time. The modification of microstructure and the improvement of mechanical properties of the deposited Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy caused by Nb addition were investigated. Although demonstrated here for Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, the combined method of T-WAAM and in-situ alloying is in principle applicable to fabricate other multi-element alloys by composition design, which is conductive to expanding the application fields of WAAM. Effects of Y2W3O12 particle inclusions and content on damping capacity of Al–12Si composites have been investigated. The Y2W3O12, which is a kind of negative thermal expansion material, can generate high local strain in the composites. Thermal expansion testing shows that the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of Y2W3O12 has obvious changes between 100 and 200 °C The Y2W3O12/Al–12Si composites show damping peaks and display higher damping capacities than the pure Al–12Si alloy. The damping capacities of composites strongly depends on the content of Y2W3O12 inclusions. A thermal strain damping model is also established. Based on the model analysis results, there is a significant contribution of thermal strain to the damping capacity in the composites; the change in CTE of Y2W3O12 could cause the generation of damping peaks. Moreover, dislocation damping and interfacial damping are also main damping mechanisms in the investigated composites.

Automatic and accurate optical coherence tomography (OCT) image classification is of great significance to computer-assisted diagnosis of retinal disease. In this study, we propose a hybrid ConvNet-Transformer network (HCTNet) and verify the feasibility of a Transformer-based method for retinal OCT image classification. The HCTNet first utilizes a low-level feature extraction module based on the residual dense block to generate low-level features for facilitating the network training. Then, two parallel branches of the Transformer and the ConvNet are designed to exploit the global and local context of the OCT images. Finally, a feature fusion module based on an adaptive re-weighting mechanism is employed to combine the extracted global and local features for predicting the category of OCT images in the testing datasets. The HCTNet combines the advantage of the convolutional neural network in extracting local features and the advantage of the vision Transformer in establishing long-range dependencies. A verification on two public retinal OCT datasets shows that our HCTNet method achieves an overall accuracy of 91.56% and 86.18%, respectively, outperforming the pure ViT and several ConvNet-based classification methods.

Abstract With the aim of preparing high performance oxide-dispersion-strengthened tungsten based alloys by powder metallurgy, the W-Y2O3 composite nanopowder precursor was fabricated by an improved wet chemical method with anion surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) addition. It is found that the employment of SDS can dramatically decrease W grain size (about 40 nm) and improve the size uniformity. What’s more, SDS addition can also remarkably improve the uniform dispersion of Y2O3 particles during the synthesis process. For the alloy whose powder precursor was fabricated by traditional wet chemical method without SDS addition, only a few Y2O3 dispersoids with size of approximate 10–50 nm distribute unevenly within tungsten grains. Nevertheless, for the sintered alloy whose powder precursor was produced by improved wet chemical method, the Y2O3 dispersoids (about 2–10 nm in size) with near spherical shape are dispersed well within tungsten grains. Additionally, compared with the former, the alloy possesses smaller grain size (approximate 700 nm) and higher relative density (99.00%). And a Vickers microhardness value up to 600 Hv was also obtained for this alloy. Based on these results, the employment of SDS in traditional wet chemical method is a feasible way to fabricate high performance yttria-dispersion-strengthened tungsten based alloys.

In this paper, the interactions between interstitial oxygen atoms and substitutional atoms in Ti–Nb–O alloys were investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. The binding energies and formation energies of oxygen atoms sited were calculated in various interstices with different geometries, element species, and atomic arrangements. The calculation results showed that there was a strong repulsive binding energy between the interstitial oxygen and the substitutional niobium atoms. On this basis, the energetically favored sites and the distribution of interstitial oxygen atoms in Ti–Nb–O alloys were discussed and demonstrated by an electron energy loss spectroscopy method. Furthermore, the diffusion activation energies of interstitial oxygen atoms based on the formation energy results were presented, and the diffusion behaviors of interstitial oxygen atoms in Ti–Nb–O alloys were also discussed.

In this work, the effect of Y2O3 addition on the grain growth and densification of W matrix was explored from a kinetic perspective by comparing the low temperature sintering behavior of W-Y2O3 composite nanopowder system with that of pure W nanopowder system. By combining nonisothermal sintering experiment with the power law of grain growth, it was found that grain boundary diffusion is responsible for the mass transport mechanism in both systems. The inhibition of W grain growth after Y2O3 addition is closely related to the lower surface diffusivity of W skeleton. The densification rate of W skeleton in these two systems were modelled using a periodic 3D arrangement of identical particles and a much smaller grain boundary diffusivity of W skeleton was obtained for W-Y2O3 sample. Firstly, it is the decrease in dihedral angle of W matrix after Y2O3 addition that causes a decrease in thermodynamic driving force for densification. Secondly, from the view of atomic mobility, the inhibited W grain growth caused by limited surface diffusivity is one of the reasons impeding densification. Besides, Y2O3 grains distributed at W grain boundary coarsen through wetting W grain boundary, which also has an inhibition effect on the W skeleton densification. The as-welded sectors of China Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR) vacuum vessel (VV) have very tight tolerances. However, it is difficult to investigate the welding stress and distortion without the production of a full-scale prototype. Therefore, it is important to predict and reduce the welding stress and distortion to guarantee the final assembly by using an accurately adjusted finite element model. In this paper, a full-scale finite element model of the 1/32 VV mock-up was built by ABAQUS which is a powerful finite element software for engineering simulation, and three different tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding sequences were simulated to study the effect of welding sequences on the welding stress and distortion. The results showed that the main welding stress happened on the weld zone, and the maximum distortion occurred on the shell near the welding joints between the inboard segment (PS1) and the lower segment (PS4). The inboard segment (PS1), upper segment (PS2), and lower segment (PS4) distorted to inside of the shell perpendicularly, while the equatorial segment (PS3) distorted to outside of the shell perpendicularly. According to the further analysis, the maximum welding stresses in sequence 1, sequence 2, and sequence 3 were 234.509 MPa, 234.731 MPa, and 234.508 MPa, respectively, and the average welding stresses were 117.268 MPa, 117.367 MPa, and 117.241 MPa, respectively, meanwhile, the maximum welding displacements in sequence 1, sequence 2, and sequence 3 were 1.158 mm, 1.157 mm, and 1.149 mm, respectively, and the average welding displacements were 1.048 mm, 1.053 mm, and 1.042 mm, respectively. Thus, an optimized welding sequence 3 was obtained and could be applied to the practical assembly process of the 1/32 VV mock-up.

Three model powders defined as MP powders (milled pre-alloyed powders), mixed powders (MX, 50 wt.% MP powders + 50 wt.% Oxide-Dispersion Strengthened powders) and Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) powders (alloyed pre-alloyed powders with the addition of Ti and Y2O3) are obtained under identical ball milling parameters. These powders are then consolidated under same sintering condition by spark plasma sintering (SPS) in order to investigate the formation mechanism of martensite lath in the MP steel and the effect of Ti on the stability of ferrite. The results indicate that the addition of Y2O3 and Ti powders can act as friction material during the mechanical alloying process, thus promoting the refinement effect. The formation of martensite lath in the MP steel is attributed to the local Cr depletion resulted from the large amounts of M23C6 precipitation. Ti possesses a strong affinity to C and long range diffusion ability, which efficiently prevents the martensite lath formation and local Cr depletion. Present study supports the conclusion that the lack of martensite in the MX and ODS steel is due to the addition of Ti. Secondary phases in these steels are identified and analyzed as well.

Superconducting wires are widely used for fabricating magnetic coils in fusion reactors. Superconducting magnet system represents a key determinant of the thermal efficiency and the construction/operating costs of such a reactor. In consideration of the stability of 11B against fast neutron irradiation and its lower induced radioactivation properties, MgB2 superconductor with 11B serving as the boron source is an alternative candidate for use in fusion reactors with a severe high neutron flux environment. In the present work, the glycine-doped Mg11B2 bulk superconductor was synthesized from isotopic 11B powder to enhance the high field properties. The critical current density was enhanced (103 A·cm−2 at 20 K and 5 T) over the entire field in contrast with the sample prepared from natural boron.

The microstructure of Sn–8Zn–3Bi alloy was refined by increasing the solidification rate and the correlation between Zn-rich phase and the corrosion/oxidation behavior of the alloy was investigated. The Zn-rich phase transforms from coarse flakes to fine needles dispersed in the β-Sn matrix with the increase of the cooling rate. The transformation of Zn-rich precipitates enhances the anticorrosive ability of Sn–8Zn–3Bi alloy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. On the contrary, Sn–8Zn–3Bi alloy with a fine needle-like Zn-rich phase shows poor oxidation resistance under air atmosphere, due to the fast diffusion of Zn atoms in Sn matrix.
