Abstract

A mobile app interface usually consists of a set of user interface modules. How to properly design these user interface modules is vital to achieving user satisfaction for a mobile app. However, there are few methods to determine design variables for user interface modules except for relying on the judgment of designers. Usually, a laborious post-processing step is necessary to verify the key change of each design variable. Therefore, there is a only very limited amount of design solutions that can be tested. It is timeconsuming and almost impossible to figure out the best design solutions as there are many modules. To this end, we introduce FEELER, a framework to fast and intelligently explore design solutions of user interface modules with a collective machine learning approach. FEELER can help designers quantitatively measure the preference score of different design solutions, aiming to facilitate the designers to conveniently and quickly adjust user interface module. We conducted extensive experimental evaluations on two real-life datasets to demonstrate its applicability in real-life cases of user interface module design in the Baidu App, which is one of the most popular mobile apps in China., Comment: 10 pages, accepted as a full paper in KDD 2020

39. Composite of Hydrolyzed PAN and β-Cyclodextrin Forms a Nanofiber Membrane with an Excellent Removal Effect on Various Cationic Dyes and Copper Ions

Abstract

The presence of dyes and heavy metals in wastewater represents a significant environmental and public health hazard, necessitating the development of efficient materials for their removal. In this study, we modified hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN-H) and combined it with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) by using an electrostatic spinning technique to fabricate composite nanofibrous membranes for water treatment applications. The resulting PAN-H/β-CD nanofiber membranes exhibit spindle-shaped fibers and porous structures with a high density of charged functional groups, which significantly enhance their selective adsorption capacity compared to pure PAN fibers. Furthermore, post-treatment with a sodium bicarbonate solution further improved this capacity, resulting in the membranes demonstrating a remarkable adsorption efficiency for cationic dyes. The adsorption process conformed to the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, with maximum adsorption capacities of 216.94 mg/g for methylene blue (MB), 471.59 mg/g for malachite green (MG), 299 mg/g for crystal violet (CV), and 43.95 mg/g for copper ions. The selective adsorption of these positively charged contaminants, particularly cationic dyes and metallic copper, indicates that PAN-H/β-CD membranes have significant potential for the treatment of wastewater containing similar pollutants.

Abstract

Powder metallurgy is widely used to fabricate high-nitrogen, nickel-free austenitic stainless steel. However, after sintering and nitriding, additional solution treatment is typically required to achieve uniform nitrogen distribution and a homogeneous austenite phase. This work proposes a novel method to eliminate the need for lengthy and high-temperature solution treatment by switching the nitrogen atmosphere to argon during the cooling process. The effects of different N2-Ar atmosphere-switching temperatures (750–1320 °C) on the phase composition, element distribution, microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the studied steels were systematically investigated. Results show that cooling in the N2 atmosphere initially transforms the matrix to a fully austenitic structure enriched with nitrogen. Excessive nitrogen infiltration leads to Cr2N precipitation, inducing partial austenite decomposition and forming a multiphase structure comprising austenite, α-Fe, and Cr2N. Strategic switching from N2 to Ar reverses this reaction, yielding a high-nitrogen, chemically uniform austenitic structure. Specifically, switching at 1150 °C, the steel exhibits excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, with a yield strength of 749 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 1030 MPa, an elongation of 38.7%, and a corrosion current of 0.06 mA/cm2, outperforming the steels cooled solely in N2 and subsequently solution-treated. Abstract

Polyvinyl alcohol) (PVA) composite fibers with high fraction of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by gel spinning process. Here, a modified process was introduced to prepare concentrated PVA/MWCNTs/ DMSO spinning dope, and to attain good dispersion of MWCNTs in the fibers. The final composite fibers were studied by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and WAXD analysis. The total content of MWCNTs in PVA composite fibers, from 5 to 30 wt%, was confirmed by TGA analysis. FTIR and Raman measurements demonstrated the existence of strong hydrogen interaction between MWCNTs and PVA matrix. SEM images of composite fibers showed smooth surface, regular cross-section shape and good dispersion of MWCNTs in the fibers. DSC analysis showed that the crystallinity first increased and then decreased with the increase of MWCNTs contents. It can be concluded that low concentration of MWNCTs can act as nucleation sites for crystallization of PVA component, and large amount of MWCNTs may impede the crystallization of PVA component. The WAXD analysis results indicated that the crystal orientation of the PVA component in PVA composite fibers is almost identical at the same drawn ratio. Polarized Raman analysis indicated a small increase in MWCNTs orientation for the composite fibers. The mechanical properties tests showed that the composite fibers exhibit significant improvement in tensile strength and modulus as compared to the neat PVA fibers.
