Abstract

The Pearl River Delta (PRD) region can be considered one of the most economically developed areas of mainland China. In September 2005, a total of 96 whole air samples were collected in Guangzhou and Dongguan, two important urban centers of the PRD region. Guangzhou is considered the economic center of Guangdong province, and Dongguan is a rapidly expanding industrial city. Here, we report mixing ratios of 50 nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) that were quantified in the ambient air of these PRD centers. The discussion focuses on understanding the main sources responsible for NMHC emissions, and evaluating the role of the identified sources towards ozone formation. Propane was the most abundant species in Guangzhou, with an average mixing ratio of 6.8 ppbv (±0.7 ppbv S.E.), compared to 2.5±0.2 ppbv in Dongguan. Toluene was the most abundant hydrocarbon in Dongguan (6.1±0.8 ppbv, compared to 5.9±0.7 ppbv in Guangzhou). Based on an analysis of the correlation between vehicular-emitted compounds and the measured NMHCs, together with the benzene-to-toluene (B/T) ratio, vehicular emission appears to be the dominant source of NMHCs measured in Guangzhou. Abstract

During this study 158 whole air samples were collected in 45 Chinese cities in January and February 2001. The spatial distribution of different classes of halocarbons in the Chinese urban atmosphere, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), Halon-1211, and other chlorinated compounds is presented and discussed. Most of these compounds were enhanced compared to background levels. However, the mean enhancement of CFCs was relatively small, with CFC-12 and CFC-11 increases of 6% (range 1-31%) and 10% (range 2-89%), respectively, with respect to the global background. On the contrary, strongly enhanced levels of CFC replacement compounds and halogenated compounds used as solvents were measured. The average Halon-1211 concentration exceeded the background of 4.3 pptv by 75% and was higher than 10 pptv in several cities. Methyl chloride mixing ratios were also strongly elevated (78% higher than background levels), which is likely related to the widespread use of coal and biofuel in China. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Variations in the distribution, source composition, mass inventory and burial flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in surface sediments from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) collected in 2011 and 2019 were analyzed to investigate the influence of the anthropogenic activities. Total concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in 2019 (200.40 ± 188.86 ng g−1 dry weight on average) were at the medium level among global bays/estuaries/coastal areas. In 2019, PAH concentrations have decreased by about 50% compared to 2011 and the dominant composition has changed from low- to high-molecular-weight PAHs. The qualitative and quantitative source apportionment analysis indicates that the dominant source of PAHs has shifted from petroleum (40.33%) in 2011 to traffic emission (44.17%) in 2019. The source variation in the PRE can be attributed to the transformation of the energy source structure from petrogenic to pyrogenic in the Pearl River Delta. The estimated PAH mass inventory of the top 5-cm sediment was 38.70 metric tons in 2019, which was about 41 metric tons lower than that in 2011. The average deposition fluxes have dropped from 418.91 ± 261.02 ng cm−2 yr−1 in 2011 to 215.52 ± 246.63 ng cm−2 yr−1 in 2019. The decreasing PAH concentration is related to the sediment coarsening and decline of total organic carbon. These findings in the PRE can be applied to other estuarine environments influenced by anthropogenic activities.

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are important fishing grounds in tropical and subtropical areas and have been widely contaminated by chemicals. However, the current understanding of the pollution status and trophic transfer of exogenous chemicals in coral reef ecosystems is still limited. This study aims to characterize the occurrence of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments, corals, and other biotas in the trophic-complex coral reef ecosystems in the Xisha and Nansha Islands of the South China Sea. PAH transfer characteristics in the highly diverse coral reef food webs were analyzed through stable isotope ratios and trophic magnification factors (TMFs). PAHs were observed in sediment and biota samples of both Xisha and Nansha coral reef ecosystems. The TMFs ranging from 0.46 to 2.18 for the Xisha food web indicate limited trophic transfer of PAHs, while those ranging from 1.07 to 5.25 for the Nansha food web indicate trophic magnification of PAHs. The octanol-water partition coefficient (Kow) of PAHs may positively influence the PAH biomagnification via accumulation along the trophic levels. This study provides new insights into PAH contamination patterns and their trophodynamic behaviour in highly diverse coral reef ecosystems, which can serve as a scientific basis for ecological risk assessment, biodiversity conservation, and coastal function management in global coral reef systems.

Abstract

To better understand the potential genic communication and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in different environmental matrices, the differences of ARG profiles between river surface water and sediments were explored. Metagenomic analysis was applied to investigate the comprehensive ARG profiles in water and sediment samples collected from the highly human-impacted catchment of the Beijiang River and its river source. A total of 135 ARG subtypes belonging to 18 ARG types were identified. Generally, ARGs in surface water were more diverse and abundant than those in sediments. ARG profiles in the surface water and sediment samples were distinct from each other, but some ARGs were shared by the surface water and sediments. Results revealed that multidrug and bacitracin resistance genes were the predominant ARGs types in both surface water (0.30, 0.17 copies/cell) and sediments (0.19, 0.15 copies/cell). 73 ARG subtypes were shared by the water and sediment samples and had taken over 90% of the total detected ARG abundance. Most of the shared ARGs are resistant to the clinically relevant antibiotics. Furthermore, significant correlations between the ARGs and 21 shared genera or mobile genetic elements (MGEs) (plasmids and integrons) were found in surface water and sediments, suggesting the important role of genera or MGEs in shaping ARGs profiles, propagation and distribution.
