The incidence and predictors of acute toxicity were evaluated in patients treated with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) for localized prostate cancer. Between December 1997 and November 1999, 116 patients with T1-T3 prostatic carcinoma were enrolled in the study. Ninety patients were treated with 70 Gy and 26 patients with T3 tumors received 74 Gy. Of the 116 patients 42 (36.2%) had a prior history of invasive urological procedure (IUP) (transurethral resection of the prostate or transvesical prostatectomy for benign prostatic hyperplasia). Acute gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) symptoms were graded according to the EORTC/RTOG scoring system. Toxicity duration after the completion of 3D-CRT was recorded. The majority of patients experienced only mild or no (Grade 1) acute toxicities. Medications for GI and GU symptoms (Grade 2) were required by 28.4% and 12.9% of patients, respectively. Only one case of Grade 3 GI toxicity (0.9%) was observed. Seven patients (6.1%) experienced severe GU toxicity (Grade 3 or 4). No correlation was found between acute toxicity and age, stage, dose (70 Gy vs. 74 Gy), IUP and pelvic lymphadenectomy. A significant relationship was observed between the duration of acute GU toxicity and prior IUP. Symptoms persisted for more than 4 weeks in 51.9% and 26.0% of patients with and without a prior history of IUP, respectively (p = 0.02). The incidence of acute complications, associated with 3D-CRT for prostate cancer, was acceptable in our cohort of patients. Purpose: MRI-only adaptive brachytherapy (MRI-ABT) is the state-of-the-art for treating locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) in combination with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. We aimed to evaluate the pattern of pelvic recurrence after the treatment., Material and Methods: A total of one hundred LACC patients were treated between January 2017 and December 2023 with concurrent chemoradiotherapy of 45 Gy in 25 fractions ± boost to lymphadenopathy (up to a maximum dose of 60 Gy in 25 fractions) with concurrent weekly cisplatin chemotherapy at the dose of 40 mg/m 2 /week, and MR-ABT., Results: At a median follow-up of 30.2 months, there were 2 local recurrences (2%) and 9 regional pelvic recurrences (9%). The median time to local/regional recurrence was 11 months (range 6-21). For all stages, the 3-year local control was 97.66%, and the 3-year pelvic control was 89.45%. Twenty-four patients died during follow-up; the 3-year overall survival was 75.11%, and the 3-year disease-free survival was 70.97%., Conclusion: MRI-ABT combined with external beam radiotherapy and concurrent chemotherapy for LACC demonstrates excellent local and regional pelvic control. Most local/regional recurrences occur inside or at the edge of the external-beam irradiated field. Recurrences inside the field of brachytherapy are rare. Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate tumor-infiltrating leukocytes in patients with endometrial carcinoma., Patients and Methods: Cluster of differentiation (CD)3(+), CD8(+) and C20(+) tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and CD68(+) tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) were evaluated retrospectively by immunohistochemistry in tumor specimen from 124 patients with endometrial carcinoma., Results: A significant decrease of CD3(+) TILs and an increase of CD68(+) TAM count was associated with higher tumor stage. In patients with early-stage, high-risk tumors, low intraepithelial CD3(+) TIL counts were associated with significantly inferior survival. In multivariate analysis of patients with early-stage tumors, intraepithelial CD3(+) TIL counts were an independent predictor of survival., Conclusion: In patients with endometrial carcinoma a decrease of intraepithelial CD3(+) TIL counts is associated with advanced stage and high risk group. Background/aim: To evaluate whether non-closure of the visceral peritoneum after total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) in patients with uterine corpus carcinoma influences the volume of the small intestine within the irradiated volume during adjuvant radiotherapy or late radiation intestinal toxicity., Materials and Methods: A total of 152 patients after TAH + BSO with adjuvant pelvic radiotherapy were studied. The state of peritonealization was retrospectively evaluated based on surgical protocols. The volume of irradiated bowels was calculated by CT-based delineation in a radiotherapy planning system. The influence of visceral peritonealization upon the volume of the small intestine within the irradiated volume and consequent late morbidity was analyzed., Results: Visceral peritonealization was not performed in 70 (46%) of 152 studied patients. The state of peritonealization did not affect the volume of the irradiated small intestine (p = 0.14). Mean volume of bowels irradiated in patients with peritonealization was 488 cm(3) (range 200-840 cm(3), median 469 cm(3)); mean volume of bowels irradiated in patients without peritonealization was 456 cm(3) (range 254-869 cm(3), median 428 cm(3)). We did not prove any significant difference between both arms. Nor did we observe any influence of non-peritonealization upon late intestinal morbidity (p = 0.34)., Conclusion: Non-closure of the visceral peritoneum after hysterectomy for uterine corpus carcinoma does not increase the volume of the small intestine within the irradiated volume, with no consequent intestinal morbidity enhancement.
