Abstract

The most effective way to achieve very high collision energies in a circular particle accelerator is to maximize the field strength of the main bending dipoles. In dipole magnets using Nb-Ti superconductor the practical field limit is considered to be 8-9 T. When Nb3Sn superconductor material is utilized, a field level of 15-16 T can be achieved. To further push the magnetic field beyond the Nb3Sn limits, High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) need to be considered in the magnet design. The most promising HTS materials for particle accelerator magnets are Bi2212 and REBCO. However, their outstanding performance comes with a significantly higher cost. Therefore, an economically viable option towards 20 T dipole magnets could consist in an hybrid solution, where both HTS and Nb3Sn materials are used. We discuss in this paper preliminary conceptual designs of various 20 T hybrid magnet concepts. After the definition of the overall design criteria, the coil dimensions and parameters are investigated with finite element models based on simple sector coils. Preliminary 2D cross-section computation results are then presented and three main layouts compared: cos-theta, block, and common-coil. Abstract

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education for young people is a challenge for national health systems in low-and middle-income countries. This study analysed SRH education among adolescents in a low-income neighbourhood of Brazil from the perspectives of young people themselves, primary healthcare providers, and school teachers. Using semi-structured interviews, data were collected from twelve informants aged 15-20 years, eight health professionals, and nine teachers. Interviews were analysed using the ecological framework (i.e. with a focus on individual, structural and programmatic levels). At the individual level, there was a marked lack of discussion about SRH in the family, especially with parents. As a result, young people sought information from relatives of a similar age, the Internet and social media. Racism on the part of some teachers was identified as a structural-level constraint, and lack of dialogue between the health and education sectors was a programmatic barrier. Schools were seen as propitious settings for SRH education, and joint action by health providers and teachers could be beneficial for the promotion of SRH among young people in schools.

Abstract

Microwave hyperthermia aims at selectively heating cancer cells to a supra-physiological temperature. For non-superficial tumors, this can be achieved by means of an antenna array equipped with a proper cooling system (the water bolus) to avoid overheating of the skin. In patient-specific treatment planning, antenna feedings are optimized to maximize the specific absorption rate (SAR) inside the tumor, or to directly maximize the temperature there, involving a higher numerical cost. We present here a method to effect a low-complexity temperature-based planning. It arises from recognizing that SAR and temperature have shifted peaks due to thermal boundary conditions at the water bolus and for physiological effects like air flow in respiratory ducts. In our method, temperature focusing on the tumor is achieved via a SAR-based optimization of the antenna excitations, but optimizing its target to account for the cooling effects. The temperature optimization process is turned into finding a SAR peak position that maximizes the chosen temperature objective function. Application of this method to the 3D head and neck region provides a temperature coverage that is consistently better than that obtained with SAR-optimization alone, also considering uncertainties in thermal parameters.
