Abstract

BackgroundEuropean forests are considered a crucial resource for supplying biomass to a growing bio-economy in Europe. This study aimed to assess the potential availability of forest biomass from European forests and its spatial distribution. We tried to answer the questions (i) how is the potential forest biomass availability spatially distributed across Europe and (ii) where are hotspots of potential forest biomass availability located?MethodsThe spatial distribution of woody biomass potentials was assessed for 2020 for stemwood, residues (branches and harvest losses) and stumps for 39 European countries. Using the European Forest Information SCENario (EFISCEN) model and international forest statistics, we estimated the theoretical amount of biomass that could be available based on the current and future development of the forest age-structure, growing stock and increment and forest management regimes. We combined these estimates with a set of environmental (site productivity, soil and water protection and biodiversity protection) and technical (recovery rate, soil bearing capacity) constraints, which reduced the amount of woody biomass that could potentially be available. We mapped the potential biomass availability at the level of administrative units and at the 10 km × 10 km grid level to gain insight into the spatial distribution of the woody biomass potentials.ResultsAccording to our results, the total availability of forest biomass ranges between 357 and 551 Tg dry matter per year. The largest potential supply of woody biomass per unit of land can be found in northern Europe (southern Finland and Sweden, Estonia and Latvia), central Europe (Austria, Czech Republic, and southern Germany), Slovenia, southwest France and Portugal. However, large parts of these potentials are already used to produce materials and energy. Abstract

This report accompanies the data base on cost supply potentials. The data base comprises both the sustainable supply and cost of solid lignocellulosic biomass from forestry, dedicated energy cropping, agricultural residues, and secondary residues from wood and food industry as well as from waste. Supply and cost data are provided on NUTS 3 level per single category and expressed in tonnes (dry matter or as received as specified in this report for the specific categories). In case of wood from forests and of secondary forest residues data are also supplied in cubic metres. To each category the cost at road side respectively at gate is determined in order to enable the assessment of economic potentials using the cost-supply method. Data are provided for 2012, 2020 and 2030. They are provided for several ‘potentials’ including: a technical potential; a base potential considering currently applied sustainability practises; and further potential levels that are determined considering changing sustainability restrictions, mobilisation measures and different constraints to account for competing use. This report documents the methods that have been applied to determine cost and supply per resource category. It includes a description of relevant projects, data sources and tools necessary to determine the cost-supply data. It is structured in an introduction and chapters by major origin both for methods used to determine supply and the roadside cost. The results are presented in the form of national level tables and in NUTS3 based maps in the report D1.8 “Atlas with regional cost supply biomass potentials”. They are also made publicly available via the S2BIOM online tool that allows customised analysis and download.

Abstract

Within the S2BIOM project, WP1 provides state of the art data on current and future sustainable lignocellulosic biomass cost and supply levels for EU28, Western Balkans, Ukraine, Turkey and Moldova. This report provides an overview on the major results in form of maps, tables together with a brief explanation and interpretation. It complements the biomass supply tool that allows interested parties to prepare their own customised tables, maps and cost-supply curves meeting their specific interests and requirements. Potentials can be presented differing options in maps. An explanation on this issue is provided in Annex A7. This report is based on the S2BIOM final data set that is described in S2BIOM report D1.5 (Datta et al. 2017) whereas the methods and data sets used to compile these data are described in S2BIOM report D1.6 (Dees et al. 2017). The geographic scope, the spatial resolution and the thematic scope can be briefly described as follows. Abstract

This data set provides global forest area, forest growing stock, and forest biomass data at 1-degree resolution for the period 1950-2010. The data set is based on a compilation of forest area and growing stock data reported in international assessments performed by FAO, MCPFE (now Forest Europe), and UNECE. Data of different assessments are to the extent possible harmonized to reflect both forest area and other wooded land, to be comparable between countries and assessments.

Abstract

Over the last decades, the natural disturbance is increasingly putting pressure on European forests. Shifts in disturbance regimes may compromise forest functioning and the continuous provisioning of ecosystem services to society, including their climate change mitigation potential. Although forests are central to many European policies, we lack the long-term empirical data needed for thoroughly understanding disturbance dynamics, modeling them, and developing adaptive management strategies. Here, we present a unique database of >170,000 records of ground-based natural disturbance observations in European forests from 1950 to 2019. Reported data confirm a significant increase in forest disturbance in 34 European countries, causing on an average of 43.8 million m 3 of disturbed timber volume per year over the 70-year study period. This value is likely a conservative estimate due to under-reporting, especially of small-scale disturbances. We used machine learning techniques for assessing the magnitude of unreported disturbances, which are estimated to be between 8.6 and 18.3 million m 3 /year. In the last 20 years, disturbances on average accounted for 16% of the mean annual harvest in Europe. Wind was the most important disturbance agent over the study period (46% of total damage), followed by fire (24%) and bark beetles (17%). Bark beetle disturbance doubled its share of the total damage in the last 20 years. Forest disturbances can profoundly impact ecosystem services (e.g., climate change mitigation), affect regional forest resource provisioning and consequently disrupt long-term management planning objectives and timber markets. We conclude that adaptation to changing disturbance regimes must be placed at the core of the European forest management and policy debate. Furthermore, a coherent and homogeneous monitoring system of natural disturbances is urgently needed in Europe, to better observe and respond to the ongoing changes in forest disturbance regimes., (© 2022 The Authors. 21. A spatially-explicit database of tree-related microhabitats in Europe and beyond.

Abstract

Background: Tree to tree interactions are important structuring mechanisms for forest community dynamics. Forest management takes advantage of competition effects on tree growth by removing or retaining trees to achieve management goals. Both competition and silviculture have, thus, a strong effect on density and distribution of tree related microhabitats which are key features for forest taxa at the stand scale. In particular, spatially-explicit data to understand patterns and mechanisms of tree-related microhabitats formation in forest stands are rare. To train and eventually improve decision-making capacities related to the integration of biodiversity aspects into forest management plot of one hectare, so called marteloscopes were established in the frame of the 'European Integrate Network'. In each plot, a set of data is collected at the individual tree level and stored in a database, the 'I+ repository'. The 'I+ repository' is a centralised online database which serves for maintaining the data of all marteloscope plots. A subset of this repository was made publicly available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility, based on a data-sharing policy. Data included are tree location in plot, tree species, forest mensuration data (diameter at breast height [cm], tree height [m]), tree status (living or standing dead) and tree-related microhabitats. Further, a visual assessment of timber quality classes is performed in order to provide an estimate of the economic value (market price) for each tree. This information is not part of the GBIF dataset., New Information: Currently 42,078 individual tree observations from 111 plots are made available via the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). As the network of plots continues to expand, so does the database of tree-related microhabitats. Therefore, the database will undergo a regular update. The current version has a temporal coverage from March 2014 to December 2020. The innovation of this unique dataset is that it is based on a commonly agreed catalogue of tree microhabitats as a field reference list when assessing assessment protocol.
