Despite the significant impact of social, cultural, and individual factors on artistic creation, which to a large extent shape the produced works, the undeniable influence of natural phenomena on creative activities must also be acknowledged. This paper reviews various types of lotus imagery, summarizes their evolutionary characteristics, and seeks to identify the shaping factors from a natural science perspective. It reveals that the growth and evolutionary patterns of lotus in nature are largely consistent with the representation and transformation of lotus imagery in art. The preliminary conclusion is that natural phenomena significantly influence the selection and depiction of artistic subjects. Artistic creation and the resulting works are completed and formed within the dynamic tension of mutual influence and constraint between the âobjectiveâ and the âsubjectiveâ.

Abstract Background Leukocyte Ig-like receptor B family 4 (LILRB4) as an immune checkpoint on myeloid cells is a potential target for tumor therapy. Extensive osteolytic bone lesion is the most characteristic feature of multiple myeloma. It is unclear whether ectopic LILRB4 on multiple myeloma regulates bone lesion. Methods The conditioned medium (CM) from LILRB4-WT and -KO cells was used to analyze the effects of LILRB4 on osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Xenograft, syngeneic and patient derived xenograft models were constructed, and micro-CT, H&E staining were used to observe the bone lesion. RNA-seq, cytokine array, qPCR, the activity of luciferase, Co-IP and western blotting were used to clarify the mechanism by which LILRB4 mediated bone damage in multiple myeloma. Results We comprehensively analyzed the expression of LILRB4 in various tumor tissue arrays, and found that LILRB4 was highly expressed in multiple myeloma samples. The patient’s imaging data showed that the higher the expression level of LILRB4, the more serious the bone lesion in patients with multiple myeloma. The conditioned medium from LILRB4-WT not -KO cells could significantly promote the differentiation and maturation of osteoclasts. Xenograft, syngeneic and patient derived xenograft models furtherly confirmed that LILRB4 could mediate bone lesion of multiple myeloma. Next, cytokine array was performed to identify the differentially expressed cytokines, and RELT was identified and regulated by LILRB4. The overexpression or exogenous RELT could regenerate the bone damage in LILRB4-KO cells in vitro and in vivo. The deletion of LILRB4, anti-LILRB4 alone or in combination with bortezomib could significantly delay the progression of bone lesion of multiple myeloma. Conclusions Our findings indicated that LILRB4 promoted the bone lesion by promoting the differentiation and mature of osteoclasts through secreting RELT, and blocking LILRB4 singling pathway could inhibit the bone lesion.

We previously reported that immunoglobulin superfamily member 9 (IGSF9) as a tumor specific immune checkpoint promoted the tumor immune escape, however, as an adhesion molecule, whether IGSF9 promotes tumor invasion and metastasis has not been reported. Here, the full length, the intracellular domain (ID) not extracellular domain (ECD) of IGSF9 could alter tumor cell morphology from a flat and polygonal shape to elongated strips, suggesting that IGSF9 signal pathway has the potential to mediate epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Real-time PCR and western blotting also showed that the mesenchymal markers were significantly up-regulated, and the epithelial markers were significantly down-regulated in IGSF9 and IGSF9-ID groups. Meanwhile, immunofluorescence showed that β-catenin was clearly translocated into the nucleus in IGSF9 and IGSF9-ID groups. The in vitro and in vivo data showed that IGSF9, IGSF9-ID and ECD could promote tumor invasion and metastasis. Mechanistically, IGSF9-ID could recruit GSK-3β to result in the accumulation and nuclear translocation of β-catenin to trigger EMT. Anti-IGSF9 could significantly inhibit the invasion and metastasis, and IGSF9 is an effective candidate for lung cancer therapy.

The interaction between the natural environmental and socioeconomic factors is crucial for assessing the dynamics of plateau ecosystems. Therefore, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and CatBoost-SHAP model were employed to investigate changes in the ecological quality and their driving factors in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, China, from 2001 to 2021. The results showed an increase from 0.44 in 2001 to 0.71 in 2021 in the average RSEI for the Diqing Prefecture, indicating an overall upward trend in the ecological quality. Spatial analysis shows the percentage of the area covered by different levels of RSEI and their temporal changes. The results revealed that “good” ecological quality accounted for the largest proportion of the study area, at 42.77%, followed by “moderate” at 21.93%, and “excellent” at 16.62%. “Fair” quality areas accounted for 16.11% and “poor” quality areas only 2.57%. The study of ecological and socioeconomic drivers based on the CatBoost-SHAP framework also indicated that natural climate factors have a greater impact on ecological quality than socioeconomic factors; however, this effect differed significantly with altitude. The findings suggest that, in addition to strengthening climate monitoring, further advancements in ecological engineering are required to ensure the sustainable development of the ecosystem and the continuous improvement of the environmental quality in the Diqing Prefecture.

Soil salinization significantly impacts the ecological environment and agricultural production, posing a threat to plant growth. Currently, there are over 400 varieties of Bougainvillea with horticultural value internationally. However, research on the differences in salt tolerance among Bougainvillea varieties is still insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the physiological responses and tolerance differences of various Bougainvillea varieties under different concentrations of salt stress, reveal the effects of salt stress on their growth and physiology, and study the adaptation mechanisms of these varieties related to salt stress. The experimental materials consisted of five varieties of Bougainvillea. Based on the actual salinity concentrations in natural saline-alkali soils, we used a pot-controlled salt method for the experiment, with four treatment concentrations set: 0.0% (w/v) (CK), 0.2% (w/v), 0.4% (w/v), and 0.6% (w/v). After the Bougainvillea plants grew stably, salt stress was applied and the growth, physiology, and salt tolerance of the one-year-old plants were systematically measured and assessed. The key findings were as follows: Salt stress inhibited the growth and biomass of the five varieties of Bougainvillea; the ‘Dayezi’ variety showed severe salt damage, while the ‘Shuihong’ variety exhibited minimal response. As the salt concentration and duration of salt stress increase, the trends of the changes in antioxidant enzyme activity and osmotic regulation systems in the leaves of the five Bougainvillea species differ. Membrane permeability and the production of membrane oxidative products showed an upward trend with stress severity. The salt tolerance of the five varieties of Bougainvillea was comprehensively evaluated through principal component analysis. It was found that the ‘Shuihong’ variety exhibited the highest salt tolerance, followed by the ‘Lvyehuanghua’, ‘Xiaoyezi’, ‘Tazi’, and ‘Dayezi’ varieties. Therefore, Bougainvillea ‘Shuihong’, ‘Lvyehuanghua’, and ‘Xiaoyezi’ are recommended for extensive cultivation in saline-alkali areas. The investigation focuses primarily on how Bougainvillea varieties respond to salt stress from the perspectives of growth and physiological levels. Future research could explore the molecular mechanisms behind the responses to and tolerance of different Bougainvillea varieties as to salt stress, providing a more comprehensive understanding and basis for practical applications.

Differences in topography and environment greatly affect the genetic structure and genetic differentiation of species, and endemic or endangered species with limited geographic ranges seem to be more sensitive to changes in climate and other environmental factors. The complex topography of eastern China is likely to affect genetic differentiation of plants there. Carpinus tientaiensis Cheng is a native and endangered plants from China, and exploring its genetic diversity has profound significance for protection and the collection of germplasm resources. Based on AFLP markers, this study found that C. tientaiensis has low genetic diversity, which mainly came from within populations, while Shangshantou and Tiantai Mountain populations have relatively high genetic diversity. The Nei genetic distance was closely related to geographical distance, and temperature and precipitation notablely affected the genetic variation and genetic differentiation of C. tientaiensis. Based on cpDNA, this study indicated that C. tientaiensis exhibits a moderate level of genetic diversity, and which mainly came from among populations, while Tiantai Mountain population have the highest genetic diversity. It demonstrated that there was genetic differentiation between populations, which can be divided into two independent geographical groups, but there was no significant phylogeographic structure between them. The MaxEnt model showed that climate change significantly affects its distribution, and the suitable distribution areas in Zhejiang were primarily divided into two regions, eastern Zhejiang and southern Zhejiang, and there was niche differentiation in its suitable distribution areas. Therefore, this study speculated that the climate and the terrain of mountains and hills in East China jointly shape the genetic structure of C. tientaiensis, which gived rise to an obvious north-south differentiation trend of these species, and the populations located in the hilly areas of eastern Zhejiang and the mountainous areas of southern Zhejiang formed two genetic branches respectively.

This study utilized the platform for ensemble forecasting of species distributions, biomod2, to predict and quantitatively analyze the distribution changes of Zelkova schneideriana Hand.-Mazz. under different climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5) based on climate and land-use data. This study evaluated the geographic range changes in future distribution areas and the results indicated that, under both SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, the distribution area of Zelkova schneideriana would be reduced, showing a trend towards migration to higher latitudes and elevations. Particularly, in the more extreme SSP5-8.5 scenario, the contraction of the distribution area was more pronounced, accompanied by more significant migration characteristics. Furthermore, the ecological structure within the distribution area of Zelkova schneideriana also experienced significant changes, with an increasing degree of fragmentation. The variables of Bio6 (minimum temperature of the coldest month), Bio2 (mean diurnal temperature range), Bio15 (precipitation seasonality), and elevation exhibited important influences on the distribution of Zelkova schneideriana, with temperature being particularly significant. Changes in land use, especially the conversion of cropland, had a significant impact on the species’ habitat. These research findings highlight the distributional pressures faced by Zelkova schneideriana in the future, emphasizing the crucial need for targeted conservation measures to protect this species and similar organisms.

Nymphaea ‘Eldorado’, a valuable water lily, is a well-known fragrant plant in China. Studying the temporal and spatial characteristics of the floral components of this plant can provide a reference for the further development and utilization of water lily germplasm resources. In this study, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to explore the types and relative contents of floral components at different flowering stages (S1: bud stage; S2: initial-flowering stage; S3: full-flowering stage; S4: end-flowering stage) and in different floral organs of N. ‘Elidorado’, combined with the observation of the microscopic structure of petals. A total of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were detected at different flowering stages, and there were significant differences in floral VOCs at different flowering stages and in different flower organs. The volatile compounds of N. ‘Eldorado’ can be divided into seven chemical classes,, namely, alkenes, alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones, alkanes, and others; the most common were alkenes and alkanes. A total of 39, 44, 47, and 42 volatile compounds were detected at S1, S2, S3, and S4. The VOCs present in high concentrations include benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, trans-α-bergamotene, α-curcumene, cis-α-farnesene, and so on. The types and total contents of volatiles at the full-flowering stage were higher than at other flowering stages. Comparing the VOCs in different parts of flower organs, it was found that the contents of alcohols, esters, and aldehydes were greatest in the petals, the alkenes in stamens were abundant with a relative content of up to 54.93%, and alkanes in the pistil were higher than in other parts. The types and total contents of volatiles in the stamens of N. ‘Eldorado’ were higher than those in other flower organs; they were the main part releasing fragrance. The observation of petal microstructure revealed that the size and quantity of the papillae on the epidermises of petals, the number of intracellular plastids, and the aggregates of floral components (osmophilic matrix granules) were significantly higher at the full-flowering stage than at the other flowering stages. This study suggested the main flowering stage and location at which the floral VOCs are released by N. ‘Eldorado’ and provided a reference for guiding the breeding of this water lily, exploring genetic patterns and developing related products.

The air pollutant NO2 is one of the major constraints on plant growth, and the ecological value of the ornamental plant Bougainvillea glabra can be weakened by NO2. In this study, an indoor 4 μL·L−1 NO2 simulated fumigation test was conducted with three treatments, CK (normal growth with clean air), T1 (4 μL·L−1 NO2 + 8 h/d), and T2 (4 μL·L−1 NO2 + 24 h/d), which were set up with considerations for time and concentration. The results demonstrated that most of the morphological parameters of B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’, except for the floral organs, were decreased in the root, stem, leaf, and bract. Continuous fumigation significantly attenuated the growth rate and reduced the water and pigment contents of organs. Excessive NO2 reduced the number and transfer rate of photoelectrons by destroying the photosynthetic reaction center, which in turn weakened photosynthesis, but the plants with intermittent fumigation recovered after fumigation. The Kaplan-Meier (K-M) survival curve displayed median survival periods of 41 and 55.5 h for T1 and T2, respectively, and the morphological structure and most of the indicators of photosynthetic reaction centers changed significantly during stress. Acute injury to B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’ was caused by 4 μL·L−1 NO2, and B. glabra ‘Elizabeth Angus’ had limited ability to regulate high concentrations of NO2 acute stress.

Ginkgo biloba, a relict plant, has been popularized and planted in most areas of China for its leaves, timber, and fruits. In the present study, the dynamic changes in leaf color, leaf pigment content during the color change period, and photosynthetic characteristics in different growth periods were studied to explore the coloring mechanism and adaptability of five late-deciduous superior Beijing G. biloba cultivars (LD1–LD5). The results showed that the leaf color change of each superior cultivar was relatively stable, and the discoloration period of LD3 and LD5 was later than that of others. From September to November, the chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and total chlorophyll content in all superior cultivars showed a downward trend, except in LD3, in which the pigment content was slightly higher in October than in September. Except in LD3 and LD4, the ratio of carotene content to total chlorophyll content in other cultivars slightly decreased in October. In May, the photosynthetic capacity of LD5 was stronger than that of other cultivars. The photosynthetic capacity of LD3 was strong in July and October. Our results imply that LD3 and LD5 are suitable for mixed planting with common G. biloba to increase the overall leaf color viewing period. Ginkgo biloba leaves turn yellow in autumn because of both a decrease in the chlorophyll content after leaf senescence and an increase in the Car content during leaf senescence. Although LD5 presented rapid seedling emergence, LD3 grew faster during the vigorous and late growth stages and is thus suitable for agricultural production.

With a growing economy, the living standard of people has improved which has led to increased use of urban motor vehicles globally. Consequently, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) has increased in the ambient air, becoming a major pollutant in urban areas. Plant leaves can absorb, adsorb and fix nitrogen oxides to some extent. Interestingly, NO2 has been recognized as a positive/negative regulator of plant growth. To comprehensively understand the effect of NO2-induced pollution on plants, Bougainvillea spectabilis seedlings were fumigated with different concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for a short period in the current study. Further, the induced morphological, physiological, and biochemical changes were measured in the treated as well as untreated seedlings. NO2 exposure caused yellow-brown spotting on the leaf blades in B. spectabilis, which could be the symptoms of oxidative damage. Our findings also reflected the changes in antioxidant enzyme activity and peroxidation of membrane lipids. In addition, the levels of osmotic regulatory substances were also found to be altered to different degrees. In addition, the activities of nitrogen metabolism-related enzymes varied, mainly affecting amino acid metabolism. Overall, the current study would provide a theoretical and scientific basis for selecting and allocating plants in NO2-contaminated areas to manage the pollutants level.

Light is an important ecological factor that affects plant growth, survival and distribution. Carpinus betulus L. is native to central Europe and is used as an ornamental plant with strong adaptability. It is an important tree species for landscaping and timber use. What’s more, the antioxidant- and anticancer-related properties of C. betulus leaf extracts are remarkable, that make it a possible raw material for medicine. Light intensity is an important environmental factor affecting the growth and physicochemical changes of C. betulus, but the mechanism of its effect on this species still remains unknown. In this study, the growth, photosynthetic characteristics, endogenous hormones and antioxidant activity responses of C. betulus seedlings to four light intensity gradients (T0: normal light; T1: 75%; T2: 50%; T3: 25% of normal light) were studied after 60 days of shading treatments. The results showed a significant effect of low light intensity on the values of the growth and physiological parameters of C. betulus. The low light intensity caused the inhibition of plant biomass accumulation and the degradation of photosynthetic capacity and stomatal behavior and aggravated the cell membrane lipid peroxidation. However, the plant height growth, leaf area, specific leaf area, photosynthetic pigment content, and contents of GA3 and ABA of C. betulus increased with decreasing light intensity. We found that C. betulus can tolerate mild (T1) and moderate (T2) shading stress by developing photoprotective mechanisms and maintaining relatively high concentrations of organic osmolytes and high antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase), but the ability of C. betulus to synthesize osmotic substances and enzymatic antioxidants was impaired under severe shading conditions (T3). Our results suggest that C. betulus can make effective use of low light resources by adjusting its morphology, material distribution, photosynthetic rate and antioxidant enzyme system in suitable low-light environments (50%~75% of normal light); however, light intensity levels that are too low (25% of normal light) will have adverse effects on plant growth. The results of this study provide not only new insights into the response mechanisms of C. betulus to light intensity but also a scientific basis for the cultivation and application of C. betulus in China.

Exogenous substances can alleviate plant damage under adverse conditions. In order to explore whether different concentrations of salicylic acid (SA) can play a role in the resistance of Bougainvillea × buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) stress and the relevant mechanisms of their effects, different concentrations of SA were applied locally under the control experiment condition of 4.0 μL·L−1 NO2, and the role of SA in alleviating injury was studied. The findings noted a significant increase in metabolic adaptations and antioxidant enzyme activities following 0.25–0.75 mM SA application (p < 0.05), except 1 mM. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in particular increased by 21.88% and 59.71%, respectively. Such an increase led to effective control of the reduction in photosynthetic pigments and the photosynthetic rate and protection of the structural stability of chloroplasts and other organelles. In addition, the activity of nitrate reductase (NR) increased by 83.85%, and the content of nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N) decreased by 29.23% in nitrogen metabolism. Concurrently, a principal component analysis (PCA) and a membership function analysis further indicated that 0.75 mM SA provided the most notable improvement in NO2 resistance among the different gradients. These findings suggest that 0.25–0.75 mM SA can relieve the stress at 4 μL·L−1 NO2 injury by effectively improving the antioxidant enzyme activity and nitrogen metabolizing enzyme activity, protecting the photosynthetic system and cell structure, but 1 mM SA had the opposite effect. In the future, the specific reasons for inhibition of SA at high concentrations and the comprehensive effects of the application of other exogenous compounds should be further studied.

Climate change, a global biodiversity threat, largely influences the geographical distribution patterns of species. China is abundant in woody landscape plants. However, studies on the differences in the adaptive changes of plants under climate change between northern and southern China are unavailable. Therefore, herein, the MaxEnt model was used to predict changes in the suitable distribution area (SDA) and dominant environmental variables of 29 tree species under two climate change scenarios, the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) 126 and 585, based on 29 woody plant species and 20 environmental variables in northern and southern China to assess the differences in the adaptive changes of plants between the two under climate change. Temperature factors dominated the SDA distribution of both northern and southern plants. Southern plants are often dominated by one climatic factor, whereas northern plants are influenced by a combination of climatic factors. Northern plants are under greater pressure from SDA change than southern plants, and their SDA shrinkage tendency is significantly higher. However, no significant difference was observed between northern and southern plants in SDA expansion, mean SDA elevation, and latitudinal change in the SDA mass center. Future climate change will drive northern and southern plants to migrate to higher latitudes rather than to higher elevations. Therefore, future climate change has varying effects on plant SDAs within China. The climate change intensity will drive northern landscape plants to experience greater SDA-change-related pressure than southern landscape plants. Therefore, northern landscape plants must be heavily monitored and protected.

Carpinus polyneura and C. dayongina are recognised as separate species in Flora of China. In this study, the results of an examination of literature, morphological comparison and phenetic clustering of nuclear ITS sequences suggest that C. dayongina is conspecific with C. polyneura. Thus, we propose reducing C. dayongina to a synonym of C. polyneura.

Abstract Carpinus betulus and Carpinus putoensis are precious species in the world. Studies on the ecosystem function of the two species are rare. This study investigated the physiological and biochemical responses of C. betulus and C. putoensis to NO2 stress and their natural recovery. C. betulus and C. putoensis seedlings underwent fumigation with 12.0 mg/m3 NO2 for 0, 1, 6, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Then, the plants were allowed to recover at room temperature for 30 d. Physiological and biochemical changes in the leaves were compared between the two species. In terms of peroxidase (POD) activity, the damage response of C. betulus under NO2 stress appeared later than that of C. putoensis. The soluble protein content of C. betulus was noticeably higher than that of C. putoensis, and C. betulus exhibited more stable membrane lipoperoxidation. The tendency of the changes in nitrate reductase of C. betulus was less noticeable than that of C. putoensis. The variation amplitudes of N, K, Mg, Zn and Mn in the leaves of C. putoensis were greater than those of C. betulus. C. putoensis showed more sensitive metabolisms in response to NO2 stress compared with C. betulus. High-concentration NO2 caused damage to C. betulus and C. putoensis was reversible, and both species returned to normal growth via their own metabolism after 30-d recovery. The results of this study may provide useful reference data for quantitative assessment of the ecosystem function of C. betulus and C. putoensis and for their scientific application in urban greening.

Owing to the strong three-dimensionality and transient evolution, the flow dynamics of a cavitating jet inside a water poppet valve is poorly understood, leading to insufficient basis for exploring the governing mechanism of cavitation effects. In this paper, a three-dimensional simulation considering the compressibility of each constituent phase is performed, to clarify the governing mechanisms under the cavitating flow inside two water poppet valves. The cavitation structures inside the poppet valves are primarily located at three regions and triggered by different mechanisms. The vortex cavitation, mainly confined within the free shearing layer, is due to vortex dynamics, while the attached cavitation at the poppet trailing edge and within the chamfered groove arises from flow separation. The fast laminar–turbulent transition process contributes to the three-dimensionality within the free shearing layer and the rear part of the chamfered groove. The flow separation due to the chamfered groove leads to increased velocity of the central potential core, contributing to a different flow discharge performance from that of the poppet valves with a sharp seat. In addition, the periodic variation in cavitation reveals the significant interaction between the shed cavitating vortex and attached cavitation at the poppet trailing edge. In conclusion, the change in velocity distribution due to different poppet valve seat structures leads to variation in flow discharge performance, and the vortex dynamics makes sense for all three kinds of cavitation occurring inside poppet valves.

Petaloidy leads to a plump floral pattern and increases the landscape value of ornamental pomegranates; however, research on the mechanism of petaloidy in ornamental pomegranates is limited. In this study, we aimed to screen candidate genes related to petaloidy. We performed transcriptomic and proteomic sequencing of the stamens and petals of single-petal and double-petal flowers of ornamental pomegranates. Briefly, 24,567 genes and 5865 proteins were identified, of which 5721 genes were quantified at both transcriptional and translational levels. In the petal and stamen comparison groups, the association between differentially abundant proteins (DAPs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was higher than that between all genes and all proteins, indicating that petaloidy impacts the correlation between genes and proteins. The enrichment results of transcriptome, proteome, and correlation analyses showed that cell wall metabolism, jasmonic acid signal transduction, redox balance, and transmembrane transport affected petaloidy. Nine hormone-related DEGs/DAPs were selected, among which ARF, ILR1, LAX2, and JAR1 may promote petal doubling. Sixteen transcription factor DEGs/DAPs were selected, among which EREBP, LOB, MEF2, MYB, C3H, and trihelix may promote petal doubling. Our results provide transcriptomic and proteomic data on the formation mechanism of petaloidy and a theoretical basis for breeding new ornamental pomegranate varieties.

In this study, 33 cultivars of Xanthoceras sorbifolium were selected from the perspective of ornamental properties, and their phenotypic traits, such as leaves, flowers, and branches, were measured and analyzed, and their phenotypic diversity was comprehensively evaluated using principal component analysis, in order to investigate the phenotypic diversity characteristics of Xanthoceras sorbifolium. The results showed that the genetic diversity index of the qualitative traits varied from 0.14 to 1.50, and that of quantitative traits varied from 1.76 to 2.05. The quantitative traits were more diverse than the qualitative traits. The coefficient of variation of the qualitative traits ranged from 16.90% to 57.96%, and that of quantitative traits ranged from 12.92% to 32.87%. The phenotypic traits of the tested cultivars had relatively rich variation. Furthermore, the level of the phenotypic diversity index of Xanthoceras sorbifolium was not consistent with the level of coefficient of variation, indicating large variation and uneven distribution of variation. Through principal component analysis, 17 quantitative characters were extracted into five principal components, with a cumulative contribution rate of 79.82%, representing the primary information on the quantitative characters of ornamental Xanthoceras sorbifolium cultivars. The F value of the 33 samples ranged from –2.79 to 1.93, and the comprehensive scores of seven cultivars were greater than 1, indicating that these cultivars had rich phenotypic diversity. Therefore, the screening, development, and utilization of fine germplasm resources of Xanthoceras sorbifolium should focus on these cultivars. The 33 cultivars were subsequently clustered into five categories through systematic clustering. The cluster analysis provided references for breeding ornamental Xanthoceras sorbifolium cultivars with different utilization values, such as large white flowers, small red flowers, large red flowers, large orange flowers, and double-petaled flowers.

The double-petal varieties of ornamental pomegranate have higher ornamental value and garden development potential than the single-petal varieties but there has been no study on the genomic variation between them. This study aimed to determine the genomic variation between the two kinds of varieties and the relationship between the variation and phenotype by identifying the DNA variation of three single-petal varieties and three double-petal varieties using re-sequencing technology. The results showed that the variation number of each variety was in the order of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) > insertions and deletions (InDels) > structural variations (SVs) > copy number variations (CNVs). The number of SNPs and InDels in the double-petal varieties was significantly higher than that in the single-petal varieties, and there was no significant difference in the number of SVs and CNVs. The number of non-synonymous SNPs in the coding region (Nonsyn_CDS_SNPs) and InDels with a 3X length in the coding region (3X_shiftMutation_CDS_InDel) was significantly higher in the double-petal varieties than that in the single-petal varieties. The number of the two variants was strongly positively correlated with each morphological index that was related to the phenotypic difference between the two varieties. Nonsyn_CDS_SNPs and 3X_shiftMutation_CDS_InDel were enriched in the cell membrane system, cell periphery, and signal transduction, from which 15 candidate genes were screened. Our results provide genomic data for the study of the formation mechanism of the double-petal flower and lay a theoretical foundation for new variety breeding of ornamental pomegranate.

Camptotheca acuminata Decne (Nyssaceae) (happy tree, tree of life, cancer tree) is a rapidly growing deciduous and endangered tree endemic to east Tibet and southern China (Liu et al., 2002). C. acuminata is an ornamental tree with monopodial growth, beautiful leaves and shade- and cold- tolerant in their natural environment. Recently, its demand has grown rapidly due to secondary metabolites production like Camptothecin and its derivatives with anti cancer and antivirus activity. The aim of the present study was to develop an efficient protocol for in vitro micropropagation of this valuable plant. Different cultural media based on both MS (Murashige and Skoog, 1962) or DKW (Driver and Kuniyuki, 1984) formulations with different cytokinins (6-benzylaminopurine, BAP or 2-isopentenyladenine, 2iP or meta-topolin, mT) have been involved. The aromatic cytokinin meta-topolin stimulated plant growth. The optimum multiplication rate of Camptotheca shoots occurred on the DKW basal medium, supplemented with 2.5 µM meta-topolin, grown under mixed LED light. The highest number of roots per plantlets was recorded on the rooting medium with 0.3 mgl-1 NAA.

Bougainvillea, a widely used ornamental plant, is mainly propagated by cuttings and tissue culture. Still, large-scale production of Bougainvillea is often difficult because of rooting issues. Therefore, based on an early establishment of the regeneration system for tissue culture in Bougainvillea by our research team, we further studied its rooting mechanism. It was observed that the morphology and anatomical structure of Bougainvillea buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ contained endogenous hormones, such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acid (GA3), and zeatin-riboside (ZR), including peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and IAA-oxidase (IAAO) activities. Following the culture, Days 0–15 consisted of the induction and initiation stages, while Days 15–25 included the expression stages. No latent root primordium was found in the Bougainvillea plantlet, which belonged to the induced rooting type. The root primordium was derived from callus cells generated by divisions of parenchyma cells in the basic tissues. It was found that the changes in the POD, PPO, and IAAO activities were closely related to the formation of adventitious roots (AR), in which the highest rooting values occurred during the transition from the initiation stage to the expression stage, whereas the endogenous IAA and ABA contents had negative and positive correlations during the induction, initiation, and expression stages.; The values of GA3 and ZR also peaked during the transition from the initiation to the expression stage. ZR and GA3 were found to promote adventitious root formation, while ABA inhibited it. The IAA/ABA, ABA/ GA3, and IAA/ZR ratios also shifted at the onset of the expression stage of AR, indicating these values were closely related to their occurrence. Overall, this study provides the basis for further research considering AR formation in Bougainvillea, and the propagation of various Bougainvillea varieties.

Bougainvillea plants have important ornamental and cultural value, as well as applications, for example, in improving the ecological environment, sterilization and as anti-virals in medicines, etc. Among many varieties, Bougainvillea buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ is more popular in landscape applications in southern China because of its excellent qualities. However, because of the difficulty of sexual reproduction, low rooting rate of asexual propagation cuttings and low temperature tolerance, its large-scale development is limited. For easy, quick and mass multiplication of such cultivars, tissue culture technique can be put to use. In this study, nodal segments of ‘Miss Manila’ were used as explants, and a single-factor experiment was carried out with a variety of plant growth regulators and concentrations to establish and optimize a complete tissue culture propagation system. The results showed that the best disinfestation was 75% ethanol treatment for 0.5 min + 0.1% HgCl2 treatment for 9 min, and the survival rate was 86.83%. The best shoot initiation formula was MS + 6-BA (2.5 mg/L) + IBA (0.2 mg/L), and the induction rate was 95.14%. The best formula for shoot proliferation was MS + 6-BA (1.5 mg/L) + NAA (0.1 mg/L), and the proliferation coefficient was 3.13. The best rooting culture formula was 1/2 MS + IBA (2.0 mg/L), and the rooting rate was 81.97%. The survival rate for plantlet refining and transplanting was 93.33%. In this study, a relatively efficient regeneration system for the tissue culture and rapid propagation of Bougainvillea buttiana ‘Miss Manila’ was established to address the problems of rooting and transplanting of this variety, to benefit research on the industrialized production and regeneration systems of this variety, and to provide a reference for the tissue culture of other varieties of Bougainvillea or other woody plants.

Nymphaea hybrid, a precious water lily, is a widely-cultivated aquatic flower with high ornamental, economic, medicinal, and ecological value; it blooms recurrently and emits a strong fragrance. In the present study, in order to understand the volatile components of N. hybrid and its relationship with petals structure characteristics, the morphologies and anatomical structures of the flower petals of N. hybrid were investigated, and volatile compounds emitted from the petals were identified. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to describe petal structures, and the volatile constituents were collected using headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) fibers and analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that the density and degree of protrusion and the number of plastids and osmiophilic matrix granules in the petals play key roles in emitting the fragrance. There were distinct differences in the components and relative contents of volatile compounds among the different strains of N. hybrid. In total, 29, 34, 39, and 43 volatile compounds were detected in the cut flower petals of the blue-purple type (Nh-1), pink type (Nh-2), yellow type (Nh-3) and white type (Nh-4) of N. hybrid at the flowering stage, with total relative contents of 96.78%, 97.64%, 98.56%, and 96.15%, respectively. Analyses of these volatile components indicated that alkenes, alcohols, and alkanes were the three major types of volatile components in the flower petals of N. hybrid. The predominant volatile compounds were benzyl alcohol, pentadecane, trans-α-bergamotene, (E)-β-farnesene, and (6E,9E)-6,9-heptadecadiene, and some of these volatile compounds were terpenes, which varied among the different strains. Moreover, on the basis of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), the N. hybrid samples were divided into four groups: alcohols were the most important volatile compounds for Nh-4 samples; esters and aldehydes were the predominant volatiles in Nh-3 samples; and ketones and alkenes were important for Nh-2 samples. These compounds contribute to the unique flavors and aromas of the four strains of N. hybrid.

Owing to the wide variation in their morphological characteristics across diverse geographies, the identification and classification of plants in the Nymphaea genus are challenging. Therefore, the present study investigated the pollen morphological characteristics of hardy water lilies (N. ‘Rose Arey’, N. ‘Perry’s Fire Opal’, and N. ‘Peter Slocum’), their relationship with species classification and system evolution, and their cross-compatibility with three strains of Nymphaeahybrid (NH-1, NH-2, and NH-3), a tropical waterlily. Pollen of the hardy water lilies was single-grained, oblate, and 18.31–20.47 × 32.51–37.64 μm. The pollen apertures were of the ring-groove type, and the pollen exine ornamentation was rod- and tumour-shaped. Pollen grains of different species differed in size, the obviousness of tumour ornamentation, and the size and density of rod-like ornamentation; their germination rates also differed significantly. Viabilities of N. ‘Rose Arey’ and N. ‘Peter Slocum’ pollen were the highest and lowest, respectively. According to the artificial pollination results, all hybrid combinations except three (NH-1 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’, NH-2 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’, and NH-3 × N. ‘Peter Slocum’) bore seeds; combinations with NH-2 as the female parent and N. ‘Rose Arey’ as the male parent had the highest seed-setting rates.

Abstract Background Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is an early event in tumour invasion and metastasis, and widespread and distant metastasis at early stages is the typical biological behaviour in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Our previous reports showed that high expression of the transcription factor E2F1 was involved in the invasion and metastasis of SCLC, but the role of E2F1 in the process of EMT in SCLC is unknown. Methods Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the expressions of EMT related markers. Immunofluorescence was used to detect the expressions of cytoskeletal proteins and EMT related markers when E2F1 was silenced in SCLC cell lines. Adenovirus containing shRNA against E2F1 was used to knock down the E2F1 expression, and the dual luciferase reporter system was employed to clarify the regulatory relationship between E2F1 and ZEB2. Results In this study, we observed the remodelling of cytoskeletal proteins when E2F1 was silenced in SCLC cell lines, indicating that E2F1 was involved in the EMT in SCLC. Depletion of E2F1 promoted the expression of epithelial markers (CDH1 and CTNNB1) and inhibited the expression of mesenchymal markers (VIM and CDH2) in SCLC cell lines, verifying that E2F1 promotes EMT occurrence. Next, the mechanism by which E2F1 promoted EMT was explored. Among the CDH1 related inhibitory transcriptional regulators ZEB1, ZEB2, SNAI1 and SNAI2, the expression of ZEB2 was the highest in SCLC tissue samples and was highly consistent with E2F1 expression. ChIP-seq data and dual luciferase reporter system analysis confirmed that E2F1 could regulate ZEB2 gene expression. Conclusion Our data supports that E2F1 promotes EMT by regulating ZEB2 gene expression in SCLC.

As valuable landscape plants, hornbeams are extensively planted around the world, including in America, Britain, and France. However, in Asia, and China in particular, these trees still grow in natural habitats and rarely used for landscaping purposes. In this study, we examined differences in the ecological niches of two hornbeam species Carpinus viminea and C. londoniana, which are widely distributed in China and neighboring countries. On the basis of actual geographical coordinates, we used Maxent software to simulate distribution ranges of these two trees according to current suitable areas and used these data to predict their potential distributions in response to future climate change. Our findings provide a theoretical basis that will contribute in guiding the resource conservation, introduction and domestication, species identification, phylogeography, and landscape application of C. viminea and C. londoniana. Kerria japonica (L.) DC., a monotypic species endemic to China and Japan, is an important ornamental shrub. In this study, we reported the complete chloroplast genome sequence of K. japonica (L.) DC. ‘pleniflora’ (GenBank accession number: MN418902) to provide genomic resources for its conservation. The total chloroplast (cp) genome is 160,007 bp in length, including a large single-copy region (LSC) of 87,672 bp and a small single-copy region (SSC) of 19,461 bp, which are separated by two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,437 bp. The overall guanine-cytosine (GC) content of the genome sequence is 34.0%. The cp genome encodes 132 unique genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 40 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of 25 cp genomes showed that K. japonica ‘pleniflora’ was most closely related to K. japonica and then had a close genetic relationship with Neviusia cliftonii in Rosaceae.

Spiraea blumei G. Don is an ornamental shrub widely distributed in Eastern Asia. Here, we reported and characterized the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of S. blumei (GenBank accession number: MN418904) to provide genomic resources for promoting its conservation. The total chloroplast genome is 155,957 bp in length and contains the typical chloroplast structure, including two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,343 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 84,384 bp, and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 18,887 bp. The overall guanine-cytosine (GC) content of the S. blumei chloroplast genome is 36.8%. The cp genome encodes 133 unique genes, including 85 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 40 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. We used the cp genome of S. blumei and 26 other cp genomes to perform a phylogenetic analysis, which indicated that S. blumei was closely related to S. martini in Rosaceae.

Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. ‘Pissardii’, is a widespread ornamental and fruit tree. Here, we reported the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of P. cerasifera ‘Pissardii’ (GenBank accession number: MN418903). The total cp genome is 157,952 bp in length, displayed a typical quadripartite structure, including a large single copy region (LSC) of 86,286 bp and a small single copy region (SSC) of 18,926 bp, which are separated by a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions of 26,370 bp. The overall guanine-cytosine (GC) content of the genome sequence is 36.7%. The cp genome encodes 134 unique genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 42 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of 27 chloroplast genomes showed that P. cerasifera ‘Pissardii’ was closely related to P. humilis in Rosaceae.

Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at a high concentration is among the most common and harmful air pollutants. The present study aimed to explore the physiological responses of plants exposed to NO2. A total of 41 plants were classified into 13 functional groups according to the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group classification system. The plants were exposed to 6 μL/L NO2 in an open-top glass chamber. The physiological parameters (chlorophyll (Chl) content, peroxidase (POD) activity, and soluble protein and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations) and leaf mineral ion contents (nitrogen (N+), phosphorus (P+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), manganese (Mn2+), and zinc (Zn2+)) of 41 garden plants were measured. After NO2 exposure, the plants were subsequently transferred to a natural environment for a 30-d recovery to determine whether they could recover naturally and resume normal growth. The results showed that NO2 polluted the plants and that NO2 exposure affected leaf Chl contents in most functional groups. Increases in both POD activity and soluble protein and MDA concentrations as well as changes in mineral ion concentrations could act as signals for inducing defense responses. Furthermore, antioxidant status played an important role in plant protection against NO2-induced oxidative damage. NO2 poses a pollution risk to plant systems, and antioxidant status plays an important role in plant protection against NO2-induced oxidative damage. In conditions of strong air pollution, more evergreen plants may be considered in landscape design, particularly in seasonal regions. The results of this study may provide useful data for the selection of landscaping plants in NO2 polluted areas.

Methemoglobin (Hb-M) is a rare hemoglobinopathy in China. We hereby report on a family living in Yantai, East China, with congenital cyanosis due to Hb-M mutation. The proband, a 65-year-old female, presented 63% oxygen saturation. Both Hb-M concentration and arterial oxygen saturation remained unchanged, even following intravenous treatment with methylene blue. There was also no change in blood-color (chocolate-brown) after adding 0.1% KCN. A fast-moving band (Hb-X) in hemolysates was found by cellulose acetate electrophoresis, the Hb-X/Hb-A ratio exceeding 10%. GT transition at 131nt of exon 2, although present in one of the α2-globin alleles, was not found in α1-globin alleles as a whole. This mutation leads to the aspartic acid to tyrosine substitution (Asp76Tyr). In this family, the novel mutation in the α2-globin gene resulted in a rare form of congenital cyanosis due to Hb-M. This hemoglobin was named Hb-M Yantai.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is highly aggressive and is characterized by malignant metastasis. Approximately 90% of patients die due to extensive metastasis. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a natural barrier that can prevent cellular invasion and metastasis. Therefore, degradation of the ECM must take place in order for extensive metastasis to occur. A disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) is a multi-domain protease that plays an important role in tumorigenesis, as well as tumor development, invasion and metastasis. However, there have been few reports on the expression and role of ADAMs in SCLC. In the current study, the expression and role of ADAMs in SCLC proliferation, invasion and metastasis was investigated. A total of 150 SCLC tissue samples were examined by immunohistochemistry for ADAMs expression. ADAM-12 was found to be abundantly expressed in 72.67% samples and other ADAMs were found to be expressed in 10% to 40% of samples. ADAM-12 levels in serum and urine, from 70 SCLC patients and 40 normal controls, were also measured using ELISA. ADAM-12 expression was significantly higher in SCLC patients than in healthy controls and in patients with extensive disease compared to those with more limited disease. Silencing the expression of ADAM-12 in H1688 cells through the use of specific siRNA significantly reduced cellular proliferation, invasion and metastasis. Supplementing the expression of ADAM-12-L or -S in H345 cells, significantly enhanced cellular proliferation, invasion and metastasis. Animal models with metastatic SCLC also exhibited increased expression of ADAM-12 along with enhanced invasion and metastasis. In brief, ADAM-12 is an independent prognostic factor and diagnostic marker, and is involved in the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of SCLC.

We present a model with feedback controls based on ecology theory, which effectively describes the competition and cooperation of enterprise cluster in real economic environments. Applying the comparison theorem of dynamic equations on time scales and constructing a suitable Lyapunov functional, sufficient conditions which guarantee the permanence and the existence of uniformly asymptotically stable almost periodic solution of the system are obtained.

Leaf functional traits are an important part of plant adaptive strategies and respond differently to different environments, but our understanding of how plants adapt to highly complex urban environments through coordinated changes in leaf functional traits is limited. In order to deeply explore the effects of different urban environments on the leaf functional traits of landscape plants, this study focused on ten common landscape plants in Nanjing, specifically, Euonymus japonicus, Pittosporum tobira, Loropetalum chinense, Photinia × fraseri, Acer palmatum, Euonymus japonicus 'Aurea-marginatus', Platanus acerifolia, Camphora officinarum, Ginkgo biloba, and Lagerstroemia indica. The study employed one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), two-way ANOVA, principal component analysis (PCA), and membership function comprehensive evaluation to explore the responses of green space plants to the environments of urban park green spaces (PAR), urban community green spaces (NL), and urban road green spaces (CR) and to analyze the impact of the trade-off strategies of plants in different green space environments based on leaf functional traits. The results showed that plant leaf functional traits and their adaptive strategies varied in different urban environments in Nanjing. The contents of LDMC, MDA, POD, and CAT in the ten plant species followed the order CR > NL > PAR, and SLA, SOD, SS, and total chlorophyll showed trends of PAR > NL > CR. The microstructures of the leaves of the ten plant species, such as SA, TUE, and TS, were evident in the expression of adaptive adjustments to the different green space environments. The principal component analysis and the comprehensive evaluation of the affiliation function of the indicators of the ten plant species revealed that the adaptability of the ten green space plants to the complex urban environment was as follows: Euonymus japonicus 'Aurea-marginatus' > Lagerstroemia indica > Acer palmatum > Photinia × fraseri > Platanus acerifolia> Camphora officinarum > Loropetalum chinense > Ginkgo biloba > Euonymus japonicus > Pittosporum tobira. The results of the study will help to further understand the layout, application, and maintenance of landscape plants in the context of urbanization and provide support for related theories.
