We present the results from calibrating the data of the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS) for \HI intensity mapping by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). Using 70 hours of drift-scan observation with the L-band (1.05-1.45GHz) 19-beam receiver, we obtain the data covering $270\,\rm deg^2$ sky area. We employ both the pulsar backend and the spectrum backend to calibrate the spectral time-ordered-data (TOD) before projecting them onto HEALPix maps. We produce calibrated TOD with frequency resolution of 30 kHz and time resolution of 1 s and the map data-cube with frequency resolution of 30kHz and spatial resolution of $2.95\,\rm arcmin^2$. We carefully examine the pointing errors, noise overflow, RFI contamination and their effect on the data quality. The resulting noise level is $\sim$ 5.7 mJy for the calibrated TOD and 1.6 mJy for the map, which is consistent with the theoretical predictions within 5\% at RFI-free channels. We also validate the data by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and find most foreground components are concentrated in the first 30 modes. We identify 447 isolated bright continuum sources in our data matching the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog, with relative flux error of 8.3\% for TOD and 11.9\% for the map-level. We also measure the \HI emission of 90 galaxies with redshift $z<0.07$ and compare with \HI-MaNGA spectra from the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), yielding an overall relative error of the \HI integral flux of 16.7\%. This paper presents the design, calibration, and survey strategy of the Fast Radio Burst (FRB) digital backend and its real-time data processing pipeline employed in the Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder array. The array, consisting of three parallel cylindrical reflectors and equipped with 96 dual-polarization feeds, is a radio interferometer array designed for conducting drift scans of the northern celestial semi-sphere. The FRB digital backend enables the formation of 96 digital beams, effectively covering an area of approximately 40 square degrees with 3 dB beam. Our pipeline demonstrates the capability to make automatic search of FRBs, detecting at quasi-real-time and classify FRB candidates automatically. The current FRB searching pipeline has an overall recall rate of 88\%. During the commissioning phase, we successfully detected signals emitted by four well-known pulsars: PSR B0329+54, B2021+51, B0823+26, and B2020+28. We report the first discovery of an FRB by our array, designated as FRB 20220414A. The Tianlai cylinder pathfinder is a radio interferometer array to test 21 cm intensity mapping techniques in the post-reionization era. It works in passive drift scan mode to survey the sky visible in the northern hemisphere. To deal with the large instantaneous field of view and the spherical sky, we decompose the drift scan data into m-modes, which are linearly related to the sky intensity. The sky map is reconstructed by solving the linear interferometer equations. Due to incomplete uv coverage of the interferometer baselines, this inverse problem is usually ill-posed, and regularization method is needed for its solution. In this paper, we use simulation to investigate two frequently used regularization methods, the Truncated Singular Value Decomposition (TSVD), and the Tikhonov regularization techniques. Choosing the regularization parameter is very important for its application. We employ the generalized cross validation (GCV) method and the L-curve method to determine the optimal value. We compare the resulting maps obtained with the different regularization methods, and for the different parameters derived using the different criteria. While both methods can yield good maps for a range of regularization parameters, in the Tikhonov method the suppression of noisy modes are more gradually applied, produce more smooth maps which avoids some visual artefacts in the maps generated with the TSVD method., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

The information regarding how the intergalactic medium is reionized by astrophysical sources is contained in the tomographic three-dimensional 21 cm images from the epoch of reionization. In Zhao et al. (2022a) ("Paper I"), we demonstrated for the first time that density estimation likelihood-free inference (DELFI) can be applied efficiently to perform a Bayesian inference of the reionization parameters from the 21 cm images. Nevertheless, the 3D image data needs to be compressed into informative summaries as the input of DELFI by, e.g., a trained 3D convolutional neural network (CNN) as in Paper I (DELFI-3D CNN). Here in this paper, we introduce an alternative data compressor, the solid harmonic wavelet scattering transform (WST), which has a similar, yet fixed (i.e. no training), architecture to CNN, but we show that this approach (i.e. solid harmonic WST with DELFI) outperforms earlier analyses based on 3D 21 cm images using DELFI-3D CNN in terms of credible regions of parameters. Realistic effects, including thermal noise and residual foreground after removal, are also applied to the mock observations from the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We show that under the same inference strategy using DELFI, the 21 cm image analysis with solid harmonic WST outperforms the 21 cm power spectrum analysis. This research serves as a proof of concept, demonstrating the potential to harness the strengths of WST and simulation-based inference to derive insights from future 21 cm light-cone image data., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables. The Tianlai cylinder array is a pathfinder for developing and testing 21cm intensity mapping techniques. In this paper, we use numerical simulation to assess how its measurement is affected by thermal noise and the errors in calibration and map-making process, and the error in the sky map reconstructed from a drift scan survey. Here we consider only the single frequency, unpolarized case. The beam is modelled by fitting to the electromagnetic simulation of the antenna, and the variations of the complex gains of the array elements are modelled by Gaussian processes. Mock visibility data is generated and run through our data processing pipeline. We find that the accuracy of the current calibration is limited primarily by the absolute calibration, where the error comes mainly from the approximation of a single dominating point source. We then studied the $m$-mode map-making with the help of Moore-Penrose inverse. We find that discarding modes with singular values smaller than a threshold could generate visible artifacts in the map. The impacts of the residue variation of the complex gain and thermal noise are also investigated. The thermal noise in the map varies with latitude, being minimum at the latitude passing through the zenith of the telescope. The angular power spectrum of the reconstructed map show that the current Tianlai cylinder pathfinder, which has a shorter maximum baseline length in the North-South direction, can measure modes up to $l \lesssim 2\pi b_{\rm NS}/\lambda \sim 200$ very well, but would lose a significant fraction of higher angular modes when noise is present. These results help us to identify the main limiting factors in our current array configuration and data analysis procedure, and suggest that the performance can be improved by reconfiguration of the array feed positions., Comment: 25 pages, 18 figures, RAA accepted

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will have the sensitivity to take the 3D light-cones of the 21 cm signal from the epoch of reionization. This signal, however, is highly non-Gaussian and can not be fully interpreted by the traditional statistic using power spectrum. In this work, we introduce the 3D ScatterNet that combines the normalizing flows with solid harmonic wavelet scattering transform, a 3D CNN featurizer with inductive bias, to perform implicit likelihood inference (ILI) from 21 cm light-cones. We show that 3D ScatterNet outperforms the ILI with a fine-tuned 3D CNN in the literature. It also reaches better performance than ILI with the power spectrum for varied light-cone effects and varied signal contaminations., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. In radio astronomy, the challenge of reconstructing a sky map from time ordered data (TOD) is known as an inverse problem. Standard map-making techniques and gridding algorithms are commonly employed to address this problem, each offering its own benefits such as producing minimum-variance maps. However, these approaches also carry limitations such as computational inefficiency and numerical instability in map-making and the inability to remove beam effects in grid-based methods. To overcome these challenges, this study proposes a novel solution through the use of the conditional invertible neural network (cINN) for efficient sky map reconstruction. With the aid of forward modeling, where the simulated TODs are generated from a given sky model with a specific observation, the trained neural network can produce accurate reconstructed sky maps. Using the five-hundred-meter aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST) as an example, cINN demonstrates remarkable performance in map reconstruction from simulated TODs, achieving a mean squared error of $2.29\pm 2.14 \times 10^{-4}~\rm K^2$, a structural similarity index of $0.968\pm0.002$, and a peak signal-to-noise ratio of $26.13\pm5.22$ at the $1\sigma$ level. This work presents the initial results of the drift-scan observation for the neutral hydrogen (HI) intensity mapping survey with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). The data analyzed in this work were collected in night observations from 2019 through 2021. The primary findings are based on 28 hours of drift-scan observation carried out over seven nights in 2021, which covers $60\,{\rm deg}^2$ sky area. Our main findings are: (i) Our calibration strategy can successfully correct both the temporal and bandpass gain variation over the $4$-hour drift-scan observation. (ii) The continuum maps of the surveyed region are made with frequency resolution of $28$ kHz and pixel area of $2.95\,{\rm arcmin}^2$. The pixel noise levels of the continuum maps are slightly higher than the forecast assuming $T_{\rm sys}=20\,{\rm K}$, which are $36.0$ mK (for 10.0 s integration time) at the $1050$--$1150$ MHz band, and $25.9$ mK (for 16.7 s integration time) at the $1323$--$1450$ MHz band, respectively. (iii) The flux-weighted differential number count is consistent with the NRAO-VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) catalog down to the confusion limit $\sim7\,{\rm mJy}/{\rm beam}^{-1}$. (iv) The continuum flux measurements of the sources are consistent with that found in the literature. The difference in the flux measurement of $81$ isolated NVSS sources is about $6.3\%$. In neutral hydrogen (HI) galaxy survey, a significant challenge is to identify and extract the HI galaxy signal from observational data contaminated by radio frequency interference (RFI). For a drift-scan survey, or more generally a survey of a spatially continuous region, in the time-ordered spectral data, the HI galaxies and RFI all appear as regions which extend an area in the time-frequency waterfall plot, so the extraction of the HI galaxies and RFI from such data can be regarded as an image segmentation problem, and machine learning methods can be applied to solve such problems. In this study, we develop a method to effectively detect and extract signals of HI galaxies based on a Mask R-CNN network combined with the PointRend method. By simulating FAST-observed galaxy signals and potential RFI impacts, we created a realistic data set for the training and testing of our neural network. We compared five different architectures and selected the best-performing one. This architecture successfully performs instance segmentation of HI galaxy signals in the RFI-contaminated time-ordered data (TOD), achieving a precision of 98.64% and a recall of 93.59%., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 1 tables. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method and the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) method are widely used for foreground subtraction in 21 cm intensity mapping experiments. We show their equivalence, and point out that the condition for completely clean separation of foregrounds and cosmic 21 cm signal using the PCA/SVD is unrealistic. We propose a PCA-based foreground subtraction method, dubbed "Singular Vector Projection (SVP)" method, which exploits a priori information of the left and/or right singular vectors of the foregrounds. We demonstrate with simulation tests that this new, semi-blind method can reduce the error of the recovered 21 cm signal by orders of magnitude, even if only the left and/or right singular vectors in the largest few modes are exploited. The SVP estimators provide a new, effective approach for 21 cm observations to remove foregrounds and uncover the physics in the cosmic 21 cm signal., Comment: Comments welcome

We present the science case for surveys with the Tianlai dish array interferometer tuned to the $\left[ 1300, 1400 \right] \mathrm{MHz}$ frequency range. Starting from a realistic generation of mock visibility data according to the survey strategy, we reconstruct a map of the sky and perform a foreground subtraction. We show that a survey of the North Celestial Polar cap during a year of observing time and covering an area of $150 \, \mathrm{deg^2}$ would reach a sensitivity of $ 1.5-2 \, \mathrm{mK} $ per $1 \, \mathrm{MHz} \times 0.25^2 \, \mathrm{deg^2 }$ voxel and be marginally impacted by mode-mixing. Tianlai would be able to detect a handful $(\sim 10)$ of nearby massive \HI clumps as well as a very strong cross-correlation signal of 21\,cm intensity maps with the North Celestial Cap Survey optical galaxies. We have also studied the performance of a mid-latitude survey, covering $\sim 1500 \, \mathrm{deg^2}$ centered on a declination of $\delta=55^\circ$, which overlaps the Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint. Despite a higher noise level for the mid-latitude survey, as well as significant distortions due to mode mixing, Tianlai would be able to detect a highly significant cross-correlation between the 21\,cm signal and the Sloan spectroscopic galaxy sample. Using the extragalactic signals from either or both of these surveys, it will be possible to assess the impact of calibration uncertainties, antenna pattern uncertainties, sources of noise, and mode mixing for future surveys requiring higher sensitivity., Comment: 20 pages, 22 figures. Ground-based observation at frequencies below 30 MHz is hindered by the ionosphere of the Earth and radio frequency interference. To map the sky at these low frequencies, we have proposed the Discovering the Sky at the Longest wavelength mission (DSL, also known as the "Hongmeng" mission, which means "Primordial Universe" in Chinese) concept, which employs a linear array of micro-satellites orbiting the Moon. Such an array can be deployed to the lunar orbit by a single rocket launch, and it can make interferometric observations achieving good angular resolutions despite the small size of the antennas. However, it differs from the conventional ground-based interferometer array or even the previous orbital interferometers in many aspects, new data-processing methods need to be developed. In this work, we make a series of simulations to assess the imaging quality and sensitivity of such an array. We start with an input sky model and a simple orbit model, generate mock interferometric visibilities, and then reconstruct the sky map. We consider various observational effects and practical issues, such as the system noise, antenna response, and Moon blockage. Based on the quality of the recovered image, we quantify the imaging capability of the array for different satellite numbers and array configurations. For the first time, we make practical estimates of the point source sensitivity for such a lunar orbit array, and predict the expected number of detectable sources for the mission. Depending on the radio source number distribution which is still very uncertain at these frequencies, the proposed mission can detect $10^2 \sim 10^4$ sources during its operation., Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the 1/f noise of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) receiver system using drift-scan data from an intensity mapping pilot survey. All the 19 beams have 1/f fluctuations with similar structures. Both the temporal and the 2D power spectrum densities are estimated. The correlations directly seen in the time series data at low frequency $f$ are associated with the sky signal, perhaps due to a coupling between the foreground and the system response. We use Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to subtract the foreground. By removing the strongest components, the measured 1/f noise power can be reduced significantly. With 20 modes subtraction, the knee frequency of the 1/f noise in a 10 MHz band is reduced to $1.8 \times 10^{-3}\Hz$, well below the thermal noise over 500-seconds time scale. The 2D power spectra show that the 1/f-type variations are restricted to a small region in the time-frequency space and the correlations in frequency can be suppressed with SVD modes subtraction. The residual 1/f noise after the SVD mode subtraction is uncorrelated in frequency, and a simple noise diode frequency-independent calibration of the receiver gain at 8s interval does not affect the results. The 1/f noise can be important for HI intensity mapping, we estimate that the 1/f noise has a knee frequency $(f_{k}) \sim$ 6 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$Hz, and time and frequency correlation spectral indices $(\alpha) \sim 0.65$, $(\beta) \sim 0.8$ after the SVD subtraction of 30 modes. Hydrogen intensity mapping is a new field in astronomy that promises to make three-dimensional maps of the matter distribution of the Universe using the redshifted $21\,\textrm{cm}$ line of neutral hydrogen gas (HI). Several ongoing and upcoming radio interferometers, such as Tianlai, CHIME, HERA, HIRAX, etc. are using this technique. These instruments are designed to map large swaths of the sky by drift scanning over periods of many months. One of the challenges of the observations is that the daytime data is contaminated by strong radio signals from the Sun. In the case of Tianlai, this results in almost half of the measured data being unusable. We try to address this issue by developing an algorithm for solar contamination removal (AlgoSCR) from the radio data. The algorithm is based on an eigenvalue analysis of the visibility matrix, and hence is applicable only to interferometers. We apply AlgoSCR to simulated visibilities, as well as real daytime data from the Tianlai dish array. The algorithm can remove most of the solar contamination without seriously affecting other sky signals and thus makes the data usable for certain applications.

The radio sky at frequencies below $\sim10$ MHz is still largely unknown, this remains the last unexplored part of the electromagnetic spectrum in astronomy. The upcoming space experiments aiming at such low frequencies (ultra-long wavelength or ultra-low frequency) would benefit from reasonable expectations of the sky brightness distribution at relevant frequencies. In this work, we develop a radio sky model that is valid down to $\sim1$ MHz. In addition to the discrete HII objects, we take into account the free-free absorption by thermal electrons in the Milky Way's warm ionized medium (WIM). This absorption effect becomes obvious at $\lesssim10$ MHz, and could make the global radio spectrum turn over at $\sim3$ MHz. Our sky map shows unique features at the ultra-long wavelengths, including a darker Galactic plane in contrast to the sky at higher frequencies, and the huge shadows of the spiral arms on the sky map. It would be a useful guidance for designing the future ultra-long wavelength observations. The Tianlai project is a 21cm intensity mapping experiment aimed at detecting dark energy by measuring the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the large scale structure power spectrum. This experiment provides an opportunity to test the data processing methods for cosmological 21cm signal extraction, which is still a great challenge in current radio astronomy research. The 21cm signal is much weaker than the foregrounds and easily affected by the imperfections in the instrumental responses. Furthermore, processing the large volumes of interferometer data poses a practical challenge. We have developed a data processing pipeline software called {\tt tlpipe} to process the drift scan survey data from the Tianlai experiment. It performs offline data processing tasks such as radio frequency interference (RFI) flagging, array calibration, binning, and map-making, etc. It also includes utility functions needed for the data analysis, such as data selection, transformation, visualization and others. A number of new algorithms are implemented, for example the eigenvector decomposition method for array calibration and the Tikhonov regularization for $m$-mode analysis. In this paper we describe the design and implementation of the {\tt tlpipe} and illustrate its functions with some analysis of real data. The Tianlai Dish Pathfinder Array is a radio interferometer designed to test techniques for 21~cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization universe as a means for measuring large-scale cosmic structure. It performs drift scans of the sky at constant declination. We describe the design, calibration, noise level, and stability of this instrument based on the analysis of about $\sim 5 \%$ of 6,200 hours of on-sky observations through October, 2019. Beam pattern determinations using drones and the transit of bright sources are in good agreement, and compatible with electromagnetic simulations. Combining all the baselines, we make maps around bright sources and show that the array behaves as expected. A few hundred hours of observations at different declinations have been used to study the array geometry and pointing imperfections, as well as the instrument noise behaviour. We show that the system temperature is below 80~K for most feed antennas, and that noise fluctuations decrease as expected with integration time, at least up to a few hundred seconds. Analysis of long integrations, from 10 nights of observations of the North Celestial Pole, yielded visibilities with amplitudes of 20-30~mK, consistent with the expected signal from the NCP radio sky with $<10\,$mK precision for $1 ~\mathrm{MHz} \times 1~ \mathrm{min}$ binning. Hi-pass filtering the spectra to remove smooth spectrum signal yields a residual consistent with zero signal at the $0.5\,$mK level., Comment: 30 pages, 38 figures

In 21~cm intensity mapping, the spectral smoothness of the foreground is exploited to separate it from the much weaker 21~cm signal. However, the non-smooth frequency response of the instrument complicates this process. Reflections and standing waves generate modulations on the frequency response. Here we report the analysis of the standing waves in the bandpass of the signal channels of the Tianlai Cylinder Array. By Fourier transforming the bandpass into the delay time domain, we find various standing waves generated on the telescope. A standing wave with time delay at about 142 ns is most clearly identified which is produced in the 15 meter feed cable. We also find a strong peak at a shorter delay of $\tau < 50 \ns$, which may be a mix of the standing wave between the reflector and feed, and the standing wave on the 4 m intermediate frequency (IF) cable. We also show that a smoother frequency response could be partially recovered by removing the reflection-inducted modulations. However, the standing wave on the antenna is direction-dependent, which poses a more difficult challenge for high precision calibration., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

The Tianlai Cylinder Pathfinder is a radio interferometer array designed to test techniques for 21 cm intensity mapping in the post-reionization Universe, with the ultimate aim of mapping the large scale structure and measuring cosmological parameters such as the dark energy equation of state. Each of its three parallel cylinder reflectors is oriented in the north-south direction, and the array has a large field of view. As the Earth rotates, the northern sky is observed by drift scanning. The array is located in Hongliuxia, a radio-quiet site in Xinjiang, and saw its first light in September 2016. In this first data analysis paper for the Tianlai cylinder array, we discuss the sub-system qualification tests, and present basic system performance obtained from preliminary analysis of the commissioning observations during 2016-2018. We show typical interferometric visibility data, from which we derive the actual beam profile in the east-west direction and the frequency band-pass response. We describe also the calibration process to determine the complex gains for the array elements, either using bright astronomical point sources, or an artificial on site calibrator source, and discuss the instrument response stability, crucial for transit interferometry. Based on this analysis, we find a system temperature of about 90 K, and we also estimate the sensitivity of the array., Comment: 28 pages, 30 figures

We explore the cosmological multitracer synergies between an emission line galaxy distribution from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument and a Tianlai Project 21-cm intensity map. We use simulated maps generated from a particle simulation in the light-cone volume (Horizon Run 4), sky-trimmed and including the effects of foreground contamination, its removal and instrument noise. We first validate how the foreground residual affects the recovered 21-cm signal by putting different levels of foreground contamination into the 21-cm maps. We find that the contamination cannot be ignored in the angular autocorrelation power spectra of HI even when it is small, but has no influence on the accuracy of the angular cross-power spectra between HI and galaxies. In the foreground-cleaned map case, as information is lost in the cleaning procedure, there is also a bias in the cross-correlation power spectrum. However, we found that the bias from the cross-correlation power spectrum is scale-independent, which is easily parameterized as part of the model, while the offset in the HI autocorrelation power spectrum is non-linear. In particular, we tested that the cross-correlation power also benefits from the cancellation of the bias in the power spectrum measurement that is induced by the instrument noise, which changes the shape of the autocorrelation power spectra but leaves the cross-correlation power unaffected. We then modelled the angular cross-correlation power spectra to fit the baryon acoustic oscillation feature in the broad-band shape of the angular cross-correlation power spectrum, including contamination from the residual foreground and the effect of instrument noise. We forecast a constraint on the angular diameter distance $D_\mathrm{A}$ for the Tianlai Pathfinder redshift $0.775

The distribution of cosmological neutral hydrogen will provide a new window into the large-scale structure of the Universe with the next generation of radio telescopes and surveys. The observation of this material, through 21cm line emission, will be confused by foreground emission in the same frequencies. Even after these foregrounds are removed, the reconstructed map may not exactly match the original cosmological signal, which will introduce systematic errors and offset into the measured correlations. In this paper, we simulate future surveys of neutral hydrogen using the Horizon Run 4 (HR4) cosmological N-body simulation. We generate HI intensity maps from the HR4 halo catalogue, and combine with foreground radio emission maps from the Global Sky Model, to create accurate simulations over the entire sky. We simulate the HI sky for the frequency range 700-800 MHz, matching the sensitivity of the Tianlai pathfinder. We test the accuracy of the fastICA, PCA and log-polynomial fitting foreground removal methods to recover the input cosmological angular power spectrum and measure the parameters. We show the effect of survey noise levels and beam sizes on the recovered the cosmological constraints. We find that while the reconstruction removes power from the cosmological 21cm distribution on large-scales, we can correct for this and recover the input parameters in the noise-free case. We present a simple and fast method for incoherent dedispersion and fast radio burst (FRB) detection based on the Hough transform, which is widely used for feature extraction in image analysis. The Hough transform maps a point in the time-frequency data to a straight line in the parameter space, and points on the same dispersed $f^{-2}$ curve to a bundle of lines all crossing at the same point, thus the curve is transformed to a single point in the parameter space, enabling an easier way for the detection of radio burst. By choosing an appropriate truncation threshold, in a reasonably radio quiet environment, i.e. with radio frequency interferences (RFIs) present but not dominant, the computing speed of the method is very fast. Using simulation data of different noise levels, we studied how the detected peak varies with different truncation thresholds. We propose an eigenvector-based formalism for the calibration of radio interferometer arrays. In the presence of a strong dominant point source, the complex gains of the array can be obtained by taking the first eigenvector of the visibility matrix. We use the stable principle component analysis (SPCA) method to help separate outliers and noise from the calibrator signal to improve the performance of the method. This method can be applied with poorly known beam model of the antenna, and is insensitive to outliers or imperfections in the data, and has low computational complexity. It thus is particularly suitable for the initial calibration of the array, which can serve as the initial point for more accurate calibrations. We demonstrate this method by applying it to the cylinder pathfinder of the Tianlai experiment, which aims to measure the dark energy equation of state using the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) features in the large scale structure by making intensity mapping observation of the redshifted 21~cm emission of the neutral hydrogen (HI). The complex gain of the array elements and the beam profile in the East-West direction (short axis of the cylinder) are successfully obtained by applying this method to the transit data of bright radio sources., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

The Tianlai Pathfinder is designed to demonstrate the feasibility of using a wide field of view radio interferometers to map the density of neutral hydrogen in the Universe after the Epoch of Reionizaton. This approach, called 21~cm intensity-mapping, promises an inexpensive means for surveying the large-scale structure of the cosmos. The Tianlai Pathfinder presently consists of an array of three, 15~m $\times$ 40~m cylinder telescopes and an array of sixteen, 6~m diameter dish antennas located in a radio-quiet part of western China. The two types of arrays were chosen to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. The primary goal of the Pathfinder is to make 3D maps by surveying neutral hydrogen over large areas of the sky %$20,000 {\rm deg}^2$ in two different redshift ranges: first at $1.03 > z > 0.78$ ($700 - 800$~MHz) and later at $0.21 > z > 0.12$ ($1170 - 1270$~MHz). The most significant challenge to $21$~cm intensity-mapping is the removal of strong foreground radiation that dwarfs the cosmological signal. It requires exquisite knowledge of the instrumental response, i.e. calibration. In this paper, we provide an overview of the status of the Pathfinder and discuss the details of some of the analysis that we have carried out to measure the beam function of both arrays. We compare electromagnetic simulations of the arrays to measurements, discuss measurements of the gain and phase stability of the instrument, and provide a brief overview of the data processing pipeline., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

Radio astronomical observation below 30 MHz is hampered by the refraction and absorption of the ionosphere, and the radio frequency interference (RFI), so far high angular resolution sky intensity map is not available. An interferometer array on lunar orbit provides a perfect observatory in this frequency band: it is out of the ionosphere and the Moon helps to block the RFIs from the Earth. The satellites can make observations on the far side of the Moon and then send back the data on the near side part of the orbit. However, for such array the traditional imaging algorithm is not applicable: the field of view is very wide (almost whole sky), and for baselines distributed on a plane, there is a mirror symmetry between the two sides of the plane. A further complication is that for each baseline, the Moon blocks part of the sky, but as the satellites orbit the Moon, both the direction of the baseline and the blocked sky change, so even imaging algorithms which can deal with non-coplanar baseline may not work in this case. Here we present an imaging algorithm based on solving the linear mapping equations relating the sky intensity to the visibilities. We show that the mirror symmetry can be broken by the three dimensional baseline distribution generated naturally by the precession of the orbital plane of the satellites. The algorithm is applicable and good maps could be reconstructed, even though for each baseline the sky blocking by the Moon is different. The redshifted 21~cm signal from neutral hydrogen (HI) is potentially a very powerful probe for cosmology, but a difficulty in its observation is that it is much weaker than foreground radiation from the Milky Way as well as extragalactic radio sources. The foreground radiation at different frequencies are however coherent along one line of sight, and various methods of foreground subtraction based on this property have been proposed. In this paper, we present a new method based on the Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) to subtract foreground and extract 21~cm signal, which explicitly uses both the low-rank property of the frequency covariance matrix (i.e. frequency coherence) of the foreground and the sparsity of the frequency covariance matrix of the 21~cm signal. The low-rank property of the foregrounds frequency covariance has been exploited in many previous works on foreground subtraction, but to our knowledge the sparsity of the frequency covariance of the 21~cm signal is first explored here. By exploiting both properties in the RPCA method, in principle, the foreground and signal may be separated without the signal loss problem. Our method is applicable to both small patch of sky with the flat-sky approximation, and to large area of sky where the sphericity has to be considered. In this paper, we apply our sky map reconstruction method for transit type interferometers to the Tianlai cylinder array. The method is based on the spherical harmonic decomposition, and can be applied to cylindrical array as well as dish arrays and we can compute the instrument response, synthesised beam, transfer function and the noise power spectrum. We consider cylinder arrays with feed spacing larger than half wavelength, and as expected, we find that the arrays with regular spacing have grating lobes which produce spurious images in the reconstructed maps. We show that this problem can be overcome, using arrays with different feed spacing on each cylinder. We present the reconstructed maps, and study the performance in terms of noise power spectrum, transfer function and beams for both regular and irregular feed spacing configurations., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, accepted by RAA
