RESUMO Objetivo: o presente estudo tem como objetivo compreender como os objetos exercem influência nas práticas de abandono de determinadas categorias de alimentos. Marco teórico: estudos prévios apresentam diferentes tipologias para explicar variações nos comportamentos de anticonsumo e abandono de determinadas categorias de produtos a partir de uma perspectiva orientada para o consumidor. Neste artigo, adota-se a perspectiva onto-epistemológica do novo materialismo, reconhecendo que os objetos possuem capacidade de agência nas práticas de anticonsumo. Em específico, destaca-se o abandono de determinadas categorias de alimentos como a interrupção de uma relação intersubjetiva envolvendo consumidores e objetos. Método: em seu plano empírico, adota-se um olhar interpretativo para descrever práticas de abandono de refrigerantes e carnes e a relação dos consumidores com esses objetos. A coleta de dados fez uso da técnica de entrevistas em profundidade. Resultados: os resultados indicam que as características nutricionais e de produção desses alimentos impactam de forma negativa a vida dos consumidores, outros seres vivos e a natureza. Para mitigar esse impacto, os consumidores adotam práticas de abandono na tentativa de romper com a relação processual e os efeitos desses objetos nas suas vidas e na natureza. Conclusões: as contribuições teóricas revelam que a relação processual entre objetos e os consumidores opera em diferentes níveis de complexidade, de acordo com a capacidade de agência do objeto abandonado, limitando ou facilitando o abandono de categorias de alimentos menos saudáveis. ABSTRACT Objective: we aim to understand how objects influence the practice of abandonment of unhealthy food categories. Theoretical background: previous studies explore different typologies to explain variations in anti-consumption behavior and abandonment of product categories from a consumer-oriented perspective. In this study, we follow the new materialism onto-epistemology to recognize that objects have agentic capacities in anti-consumption practices. Specifically, we highlight the abandonment of certain food categories as the interruption of an intersubjective relationship involving consumers and objects. Method: our empirical plan adopts an interpretive perspective to describe practices of abandonment of soft drinks and meats and the way consumers build new relationships with these objects. Data collection makes use of in-depth interviews. Results: the results indicate that the nutritional and production characteristics of these foods negatively impact the lives of consumers, other living beings, and nature. To mitigate this impact, consumers adopt abandonment practices attempting to break with the procedural relationship and the effects of these objects on their lives and on nature. Conclusions: theoretical contributions reveal that the procedural relationship between objects and consumers operates at different levels of complexity, according to the agentic capacity of the object, limiting or making easy the abandonment of unhealthy food categories.

The White Cane – A tool that both helps and hinders Bodies, shame, normality and the agency of objects Maria Bäckman The article discusses the attempts of visually impaired individuals to sometimes pass as seeing. The background is the resistance that many blind or visually impaired people testify they feel, during their ongoing rehabilitation, about a white cane. Often, on these occasions they provid descriptions of dramatic narratives in which the user explains what it was like when they first realized that it was now really time to start using a cane (for example: When I fell in the water from the quay, or stepped out in front of a bus, etc.). However, many also relate the way a cane, even in more mundane contexts, makes the individual’s visual inability obvious to others and thereby makes the person particularly vulnerable. The tool that connects the visually impaired with the outside world is thus also a material expression which makes both the visual damage and the cane usersmore noticeable as less than a fully functional individual. By holding on to the materiality of the cane and its nature of being a physical object, our understanding can be increased of the ambivalent relationship that many visually impaired people develop with a white cane. On the basis of social materiality studies and the concept of ableism, taken from critical handicap research, the article shows how the use of a white cane takes place in a public space; a space where the user variously inhabits an “imaginary” full-sighted body and another, existing body, which on the contrary is characterized by its weakened vision. However, it is important to realize that the persistent rejection mechanism that many visually impaired people have for a cane is intimately linked to ableism and existing norms of bodily functions. A desire to repel an object that reduces one to something else, and consequently to a somewhat lower standing, is a perfectly reasonable reaction to a deeply rooted social conflict. For many people with visual impairment, the resistance to a white cane must therefore be understood as a refusal to embody a functional normative failure.

Resumo Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a agência de elementos não humanos, como os equipamentos fotográficos, na consolidação de uma estética caracterizada por ruídos e falhas, denominada aqui de estética da precariedade. Tal estética marca a produção fotográfica do artista checo Miroslav Tichý (1926-2011). Suas fotografias, singularizadas por falta de nitidez, ruídos e deterioração física, decorrentes de um processo fotográfico artesanal e peculiar, servem de estudo de caso para analisar a ingerência de elementos não humanos na configuração dessa estética da precariedade. Abstract This article aims to analyze the agency of non-human elements such as photographic equipment in the consolidation of an aesthetic characterized by noise and flaws, entitled aesthetic of precariousness. Such aesthetic permeates the photographic production of Czech artist Miroslav Tichý (1926-2011). His photographs, distinguished by lack of sharpness, excess of noise and deterioration resulting from a homemade and peculiar photographic process, serve as a case study to analyze the interference of non-human elements in the outline of this aesthetic of precariousness.

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi raport z badania obiektu użytku codziennego - inteligentnego automatycznego odkurzacza. Badanie miało charakter jakościowy i przeprowadzone zostało metodą wywiadu pogłębionego przeprowadzonego na posiadaczach automatycznego odkurzacza, a także metodą obserwacji niejawnej przeprowadzonej na jednym z respondentów oraz na dziedzinach bawiących się z urządzeniem. Celem projektu było zbadanie, czym dla użytkownika jest automatyczny odkurzacz, w jakie wyposażany jest znaczenia, jakie role pełni w jego życiu, a przez to odkrycie, w jaki sposób urządzenie na różnych poziomach działa. W konsekwencji wskazano na jego performatywny potencjał do oddziaływania na użytkowników, na sprawczość, która wykracza poza przeznaczoną mu - czysto praktyczną - funkcję. The paper is a report on the study of an object of everyday use - the smart vacuum cleaner. The research was a qualitative study carried out using the method of in-depth interviews conducted with owners of automatic vacuum cleaners, coupled with the method of disguised observation carried out on one of the respondents and children playing with the device. The aim of this project was to understand what an automatic vacuum cleaner is to its user, what role it plays in their life, what functions it performs, and to reveal how it works on different levels. This resulted in indication of the performative potential of the studied object, as well as the agency hidden within it, going beyond its intended practical function.

Religious institutions such as the Catholic Church are gaining in importance again in the wake of the economic crisis in Spain. They act as a reference point and meeting place which keep the faith community together. Tangible assistance is offered and transnational communication structures and family bonds are sustained. With its patron saints, the Catholic Church serves as a place of remembrance to produce and reproduce senses of belongings that date back to the early colonial era. Social relations of migrants are manifested in a space which symbolizes the power and glory of the former Colonial regime. Taking the example of the congregation of San Lorenzo in an immigration neighbourhood in Madrid, I discuss the role and agency of religious artefacts in re-producing collective identities and allocating social and financial resources. By focusing on the object itself, the functions and cultural meanings of the figure in different historical contexts become apparent. The religious staging around the object of the saint show spatially and chronologically comprehensive chains of interaction which reflect deep seated power relations between the immigrant and the host communities.

Despite the notorious advances towards overcoming the dichotomy between structure and agent, other oppositions were still kept, since these perspectives did not include objects in social relations. Thus, seeking to overcome these dichotomies, theoretical perspectives concerned with the role of material elements in the network of relationships were developed, focusing on theagency of objects. This paper will discuss these works with the intention of verifying whether these provide an overcoming/dissolution of dichotomies between objectivity X subjectivity and materiality X immateriality. Resumo: A partir do final da década de 1970 foram desenvolvidas abordagens que pretendiam inserir o sujeito na teoria social. Apesar dos notórios avanços visando à superação da dicotomia entre estrutura e agente, ainda foram mantidas outras oposições, pois tais perspectivas não incluíam os objetos nas relações sociais. Assim, buscando superar essas dicotomias, foram desenvolvidas perspectivas teóricas preocupadas com o papel dos elementos materiais na rede de relações, focando na agência dos objetos. Este trabalho discorrerá sobre esses estudos com o intuito de verificar se eles fornecem uma superação/dissolução das dicotomias entre objetividade X subjetividade e materialidade X imaterialidade.Abstract: Since the late 1970's, approaches were developed which intended to insert the subject within social theory. O antropólogo, de acordo com Roy Wagner, é aquele que usa muito a palavra cultura. O que acontece quando empresas, marcas e bens materiais passam também a reivindicá-la? O objetivo deste texto é pensar o processo de invenção da cultura brasileira por meio da marca de sandálias Havaianas. O percurso metodológico será o de descrever sua biografia social, objetivando realizar uma análise que possibilite compreender como entidades não humanas adquirem significados e, a partir de então, passam também a agir no ambiente social. A reflexão tem como base a trajetória do objeto, imagens publicitárias e o trabalho de campo realizado em empresas e agências de publicidade entre os anos de 2008 e 2010. Neste caso particular, observaremos o processo de invenção da cultura brasileira como expressão máxima dos agenciamentos exercidos pela marca Havaianas. According to Roy Wagner, the anthropologist is the one that uses often the word culture. What happens when corporations, brands and material goods start to claim it as well? This article aims to think about the invention of Brazilian culture through the brand Havaianas. The methodological approach begins with the description of its social history, in order to perform an analysis which allows for a better understanding of how non-human entities acquire social meanings, and, from then on, their act in the social world. The reflection is based on the history of Havaianas, advertising images and fieldwork done in corporate environments between 2008 and 2010. Through this specific approach, the process of invention of Brazilian culture was observed as the highest expression of agency exercised by the Havaianas brand.
