Dans les années cinquante le sociologue canadien Erving Goffman a publié un livre sur la vie quotidienne comme représentation, soutenant l’idée que dans les différents contextes de la vie quotidienne, chaque personne agit comme acteur jouant sur une scène et représentant un personnage. Cette approche, appelée dramaturgique, semble dissoudre l’identité de la personne dans la pluralité des selfs. Le présent travail veut problématiser cette interprétation de l’approche dramaturgique de Goffman, en posant au centre de l’analyse la relation entre personne et personnage, avec l’objectif de focaliser les processus correspondants d’espacement et de réunification en considérant, d’une part, la routine de la vie quotidienne, d’autre part, l’interpolation spatio-temporelle mise en acte par la fiction littéraire. Cette analyse adopte deux registres d’écriture : le premier définit un cadre théorique de référence, prenant en considération quelques représentants de la sociologie contemporaine, en particulier Goffman et Boltanski ; le deuxième s’intègre au premier pour focaliser l’attention sur les procédés activés par la fiction littéraire, se rapportant à quelques textes d’écrivains célèbres, comme Pirandello et Camilleri.

Parlare di Pareto, oggi, significa occuparsi di un classico della sociologia che è stato oggetto di una ricezione/recezione discontinua, non solo in Europa ma anche, forse soprattutto, in America. Se negli anni Venti James Harvey Robinson scriveva che la teoria dei residui e delle derivazioni di Pareto si poteva annoverare tra le grandi scoperte scientifiche, è anche vero che la figura di Pareto ha suscitato riserve e perplessità, e che i suoi meriti «furono riconosciuti soltanto dieci anni dopo la sua morte, e per di più in America» (Coser [1977] 1983, p. 582), in particolare ad Harvard (Femia, Marshall 2012). Si pensi ad esempio a Parsons, che negli anni Trenta, ne La struttura dell’azione sociale, richiama ampiamente Pareto (Parsons [1937] 1968), o anche a Merton, il quale, sebbene non sia stato mai molto attratto dalle analisi paretiane (cfr. Coser 1975, p. 96; Coser [1977] 1983, p. 585), nell’intervista rilasciata ad Anna Di Lellio ha ricordato il grande interesse con il quale seguì i seminari di Henderson su Pareto (cfr. Di Lellio 1985, p. 17). E in effetti, negli anni Trenta gli Stati Uniti sono stati estremamente recettivi nei confronti dell’opera di Pareto. Successivamente, però, questo interesse si è fortemente ridimensionato, per poi riaccendersi negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta, non solo in America ma anche in Europa, come testimoniato, fra l’altro, dall’attenzione riservata a Pareto da Raymond Aron ([1967] 1989). Una ricezione/recezione discontinua, quindi, che ha caratterizzato anche i decenni successivi e il nuovo millennio (cfr. Federici 1991, 1999, 2016), con studi che hanno cercato di rispondere anche a un inquietante interrogativo (cfr. Cirillo 1983; Femia e Marshall 2012): se Pareto fosse vissuto più a lungo, si sarebbe opposto al fascismo? Ciò premesso, partendo dalla distinzione tra ricezione e recezione, il paper intende strutturare una riflessione sulla recezione di Pareto negli Stati Uniti. Non mi soffermerò, però, sulla recezione esplicita, ad esempio quella di Parsons o quella critica di Wright Mills, bensì su quella implicita considerando, in particolare, un interessante testo di un famoso linguista americano: La libertà di chi? di George Lakoff. Scopo del lavoro è mettere in luce la prossimità teorica tra la struttura argomentativa di questo testo sulla libertà e alcune parti del Trattato di Sociologia Generale di Vilfredo Pareto, che, nonostante si presenti all’apparenza «come un’immensa massa di fatti e di teorie, in un disordine formale notevole» (Bousquet 1954, p. XI), non smette di sorprendere il lettore per la sua attualità (cfr. Mongardini 2009) e per la lucidità con cui riesce a mettere a fuoco alcune fondamentali strategie di manipolazione.

This article offers some reflections on the relationship between complexity and norms, with specific reference to three masters of sociological thought: Parsons, Luhmann and Merton. Three different ideas of complexity and of the connections between complexity/norms and norms/social actor come out from this analysis. The implications of every position are commented by taking into account the scientific debate on the recent social and economic changes. In her work, the authoress claims that these changes demand the overcoming of the rules of market economy and the recovery of a new solidarity based on the concept of human being. The Autor holds that sociology may offer a substantial contribution in the analysis of food dii. orders. The articles clarifies the elements which could be developed by this approach. The argument is organized in three main sections: in the first one, a brief consideration of the way in which illness has been viewed in traditional as well as modern societies is offered; in the second one the way in which people have relation with food in contemporary world is considered; the last section is focussed on the role played by the family in the origin and treatment of anorexy. The author analyzes the position of the elderly in the preindustrial and industrial society, focussing on the institute of retirement. She describes the policy followed in the US and in several European countries, putting in evidence the necessity of a revision of a rigid retirement age and criticizing recent measures taken by the Italian government. The author recognizes that the extension of the working period could avoid social exclusion, but she also argues that retirement should be a free choice, though activity is not necessarily connected with work.
