Previous work assessing the effect of additive noise on the postural control system has found a positive effect of additive white noise on postural dynamics. This study covers two separate experiments that were run sequentially to better understand how the structure of the additive noise signal affects postural dynamics, while also furthering our knowledge of how the intensity of auditory stimulation of noise may elicit this phenomenon. Across the two experiments, we introduced three auditory noise stimulations of varying structure (white, pink, and brown noise). Experiment 1 presented the stimuli at 35 dB while Experiment 2 was presented at 75 dB. Our findings demonstrate a decrease in variability of the postural control system regardless of the structure of the noise signal presented, but only for high intensity auditory stimulation.

Past studies have explored formant centering, a corrective behavior of convergence over the duration of an utterance toward the formants of a putative target vowel. In this study, we establish the existence of a similar centering phenomenon for pitch in healthy elderly controls and examine how such corrective behavior is altered in Alzheimer's Disease (AD). We found the pitch centering response in healthy elderly was similar when correcting pitch errors below and above the target (median) pitch. In contrast, patients with AD showed an asymmetry with a larger correction for the pitch errors below the target phonation than above the target phonation. These findings indicate that pitch centering is a robust compensation behavior in human speech. Our findings also explore the potential impacts on pitch centering from neurodegenerative processes impacting speech in AD.

To demonstrate the importance of sound in the perception of food texture, a sensory evaluation of texture was conducted using a custom device by feeding boneconducted sounds generated during the mastication of potato chips through headphones as auditory feedback. In agreement with previous reports, it was verified that the perceived crispness was generally augmented depending on the presented sound pressure level. Auditory and somatosensory white noise can stabilize standing balance. However, the differential effects of auditory and tactile noise stimulation on balance are unknown. Prior work on unimodal noise stimulation showed gains in balance with white noise through the auditory and tactile modalities separately. The current study aims to examine whether multimodal noise elicits similar responses to unimodal noise. We recorded the postural sway of healthy young adults who were presented with continuous white noise through the auditory or tactile modalities and through a combination of both (multimodal condition) using a wearable device. Our results replicate previous work that showed that auditory or tactile noise reduces sway variability with and without vision. Additionally, we show that multimodal noise also reduces the variability of sway. Analysis of different frequency bands of sway is typically used to separate open-loop exploratory ( 0.3 Hz) sway. We performed this analysis and showed that unimodal and multimodal white noise affected postural sway variability similarly in both timescales. These results support that the sensory noise effects on balance are robust across unimodal and multimodal conditions and can affect both mechanisms of sway represented in the frequency spectrum. In future work, the parameters of acoustic/tactile manipulation should be optimized for the most effective balance stabilization, and multimodal therapies should be explored for older adults with typical age-related balance instabilities.

Abstract Background Asymmetry in involuntary trunk motion during voluntary movements of the lower extremities is a risk factor for musculoskeletal injuries and may be related to core stability. Core stability plays a pivotal role in maintaining postural stability during distal segment movements. Because mediolateral head motion partially represents trunk motion during rhythmic movements, controlling it can help ensure symmetric trunk motion. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between core stability and asymmetric trunk motion during rhythmic movements, and to evaluate the effects of feedback music on mediolateral head motion. Methods We developed a system that uses a wireless earbud and a high-resolution inertial measurement unit sensor to measure head angle and provide feedback music. When the head angle exceeds a predefined threshold, the music is muted in the earbud on the side of the head tilt. In our lab-based study, we measured head angles during cycling at 70% of maximum speed using this self-developed system, and compared them between individuals with good (Sahrmann core stability test: 2–5 level) and poor core stability (0–1 level). The amplitude of mediolateral head motion was represented by the difference between the left and right peak angles, and the symmetry in mediolateral head motion was represented by the average of left and right peak angles. Results Individuals with poor core stability demonstrated significantly greater amplitude of, and less symmetry in, mediolateral head motion than those with good core stability. Additionally, feedback music significantly reduced the amplitude of mediolateral head motion in both the good- and poor-core-stability groups. Conclusion Our findings indicate that core stability is crucial for maintaining symmetric head motion during rhythmic movements like cycling. Feedback music could serve as an effective tool for promoting symmetry in head motion and thus preventing musculoskeletal injuries.

Introduction: Autistic individuals demonstrate greater variability and timing error in their motor performance than neurotypical individuals, likely due at least in part to atypical cerebellar characteristics and connectivity. These motor difficulties may differentially affect discrete as opposed to continuous movements in autistic individuals. Augmented auditory feedback has the potential to aid motor timing and variability due to intact auditory-motor pathways in autism and high sensitivity in autistic individuals to auditory stimuli. Methods: This experiment investigated whether there were differences in timing accuracy and variability in autistic adults as a function of task (discontinuous vs. continuous movements) and condition (augmented auditory feedback vs. no auditory feedback) in a synchronization-continuation paradigm. Ten autistic young adults aged 17–27 years of age completed the within-subjects study that involved drawing circles at 800 milliseconds intervals on a touch screen. In the discontinuous task, participants traced a series of discrete circles and paused at the top of each circle for at least 60 milliseconds. In the continuous task, participants traced the circles without pausing. Participants traced circles in either a non-auditory condition, or an auditory condition in which they heard a tone each time that they completed a circle drawing. Results: Participants had significantly better timing accuracy on the continuous timing task as opposed to the discontinuous task. Timing consistency was significantly higher for tasks performed with auditory feedback. Discussion: This research reveals that motor difficulties in autistic individuals affect discrete timing tasks more than continuous tasks, and provides evidence that augmented auditory feedback may be able to mitigate some of the timing variability present in autistic persons’ movements. The aim of the study was to compare the acoustic characteristics of voice between Auditory Brainstem Implantees, Cochlear Implantees and normal hearing children. Voice parameters such as fundamental frequency, formant frequencies, perturbation measures, and harmonic to noise ratio were measured in a total of 30 children out of which 10 were Auditory Brainstem Implantees, 10 were Cochlear Implantees and 10 were normal hearing children. Parametric and nonparametric statistics were done to establish the nature of significance between the three groups. Overall deviancies were seen in the implanted group for all acoustic parameters. However abnormal deviations were seen in individuals with Auditory Brainstem Implants indicating the deficit in the feedback loop impacting the voice characteristics. The deviancy in feedback could attribute to the poor performance in ABI and CI. The CI performed comparatively better when compared to the ABI group indicating a slight feedback loop due to the type of Implant. Songbirds’ vocal mastery is impressive, but to what extent is it a result of practice? Can they, based on experienced mismatch with a known target, plan the necessary changes to recover the target in a practice-free manner without intermittently singing? In adult zebra finches, we drive the pitch of a song syllable away from its stable (baseline) variant acquired from a tutor, then we withdraw reinforcement and subsequently deprive them of singing experience by muting or deafening. In this deprived state, birds do not recover their baseline song. However, they revert their songs toward the target by about 1 standard deviation of their recent practice, provided the sensory feedback during the latter signaled a pitch mismatch with the target. Thus, targeted vocal plasticity does not require immediate sensory experience, showing that zebra finches are capable of goal-directed vocal planning.

Featured Application: This wearable system employs innovative sonification techniques to enhance balance and overall physical awareness. It offers rehabilitation and healthcare sectors an accessible and intuitive tool for balance training and physical conditioning, where monitoring and improving postural stability is crucial. This paper presents the design, development, and feasibility testing of a wearable sonification system for real-time posture monitoring and feedback. The system utilizes inexpensive motion sensors integrated into a compact, wearable package to measure body movements and standing balance continuously. The sensor data is processed through sonification algorithms to generate real-time auditory feedback cues indicating the user's balance and posture. The system aims to improve movement awareness and physical conditioning, with potential applications in balance rehabilitation and physical therapy. Initial feasibility testing was conducted with a small group of healthy participants performing standing balance tasks with eyes open and closed. The present study examined opposing and following vocal responses to altered auditory feedback (AAF) to determine how damage to left-hemisphere brain networks impairs the internal forward model and feedback mechanisms in post-stroke aphasia. Forty-nine subjects with aphasia and sixty age-matched controls performed speech vowel production tasks while their auditory feedback was altered using randomized ± 100 cents upward and downward pitch-shift stimuli. Data analysis revealed that when vocal responses were averaged across all trials (i.e., opposing and following), the overall magnitude of vocal compensation was significantly reduced in the aphasia group compared with controls. In addition, when vocal responses were analyzed separately for opposing and following trials, subjects in the aphasia group showed a significantly lower percentage of opposing and higher percentage of following vocal response trials compared with controls, particularly for the upward pitch-shift stimuli. However, there was no significant difference in the magnitude of opposing and following vocal responses between the two groups. These findings further support previous evidence on the impairment of vocal sensorimotor control in aphasia and provide new insights into the distinctive impact of left-hemisphere stroke on the internal forward model and feedback mechanisms. In this context, we propose that the lower percentage of opposing responses in aphasia may be accounted for by deficits in feedback-dependent mechanisms of audio-vocal integration and motor control. In addition, the higher percentage of following responses may reflect aberrantly increased reliance of the speech system on the internal forward model for generating sensory predictions during vocal error detection and motor control. The use of virtual reality (VR) has seen significant recent growth and presents opportunities for use in many domain areas. The use of head-mounted displays (HMDs) also presents unique opportunities for the implementation of audio feedback congruent with head and body movements, thus matching intuitive expectations. However, the use of audio in VR is still undervalued and there is a lack of consistency within audio-centedd research in VR. To address this shortcoming and present an overview of this area of research, we conducted a scoping review (n = 121) focusing on the use of audio in HMD-based VR and its effects on user/player experience. Results show a lack of standardisation for common measures such as pleasantness and emphasize the context-specific ability of audio to influence a variety of affective, cognitive, and motivational measures, but are mixed for presence and generally lacking for social experiences and descriptive research. This study explores the conventional 'funneling' method by introducing two extra locations beyond the virtual reality (VR) controller boundaries, terming it the extended funneling technique. Thirty-two participants engaged in a localization task, with their responses recorded using eye-tracking technology. They were tasked with localizing a virtual ping-pong ball as it bounced both within and outside their virtual hands on a virtual board. Both the experimental and control groups received simultaneous spatial audio and vibrotactile feedback. The experimental group received vibrotactile feedback with extended funneling, while the control group received vibrotactile feedback without funneling for comparison. The results indicate that the experimental group, benefiting from the extended funneling technique, demonstrated a significantly higher accuracy rate (41.79%) in localizing audio–vibrotactile stimuli compared to the control group (28.21%). No significant differences emerged in embodiment or workload scores. These findings highlight the effectiveness of extended funneling for enhancing the localization of sensory stimuli in VR. Speech production is a complex human function requiring continuous feedforward commands together with reafferent feedback processing. These processes are carried out by distinct frontal and temporal cortical networks, but the degree and timing of their recruitment and dynamics remain poorly understood. We present a deep learning architecture that translates neural signals recorded directly from the cortex to an interpretable representational space that can reconstruct speech. We leverage learned decoding networks to disentangle feedforward vs. feedback processing. Unlike prevailing models, we find a mixed cortical architecture in which frontal and temporal networks each process both feedforward and feedback information in tandem. We elucidate the timing of feedforward and feedback-related processing by quantifying the derived receptive fields. Our approach provides evidence for a surprisingly mixed cortical architecture of speech circuitry together with decoding advances that have important implications for neural prosthetics. In this paper, we describe a proof-of-concept for the implementation of a wearable auditory biofeedback system based on a sensor-instrumented insole. Such a system aims to assist everyday users with static and dynamic exercises for gait rehabilitation interventions by providing auditory feedback based on plantar pressure distribution and automated classification of functional gait disorders. As ground reaction force (GRF) data are frequently used in clinical practice to quantitatively describe human motion and have been successfully used for the classification of gait patterns into clinically relevant classes, a feed-forward neural network was implemented on the firmware of the insoles to estimate the GRFs using pressure and acceleration data. The estimated GRFs approximated well the GRF measurements obtained from force plates. To distinguish between physiological gait and gait disorders, we trained and evaluated a support vector machine with labeled data from a publicly accessible dataset. The automated gait classification was then sonified for auditory feedback. The potential of the implemented auditory feedback for preventive and supportive applications in physical therapy was finally assessed with both expert and non-expert participants. A focus group revealed experts' expectations for the proposed system, while a usability study assessed the clarity of the auditory feedback to everyday users. Two experiments were conducted to assess the impact of induced paresthesia on movement parameters of goal-directed aiming movements to determine how visual and auditory feedback may enhance performance when somatosensory feedback is disrupted. In both experiments, neurotypical adults performed the goal-directed aiming task in four conditions: (i) paresthesia—full vision; (ii) paresthesia—no vision; (iii) no paresthesia—full vision; (iv) no paresthesia—no vision. Targets appeared on a computer screen, vision was obscured using visual occlusion spectacles, and paresthesia was induced with a constant current stimulator. The first and last 20% of trials (early and late performance) were compared to assess adaptability to altered somatosensory input. Experiment 2 added an auditory tone that confirmed successful target acquisitions. When compared to early performance in the no-paresthesia and no-vision conditions, induced paresthesia and no vision led to significantly larger endpoint error toward the body midline in both early and late performance. This finding reveals the importance of proprioceptive input for movement accuracy in the absence of visual feedback. The kinematic results indicated that vision could not fully compensate for the disrupted proprioceptive input when participants experienced induced paresthesia. However, when auditory feedback confirmed successful aiming movements in Experiment 2, participants were able to improve their endpoint variability when experiencing induced paresthesia through changes in movement preparation. Plain English summary This study aims to investigate whether individuals with subthreshold eating disorder (ED) symptoms show differences in the integration of proprioceptive and auditory cues in relation to body representation, as compared to healthy controls. This will be examined by focusing on two different body parts (finger and waist) with different levels of emotional significance for individuals with EDs. Participants will be screened for ED symptoms and divided into groups accordingly. The strength of the illusions will be measured using estimations of body part position and size, as well as self-report questionnaires. Regression analysis will be used to assess the predictive role of susceptibility to the body illusions on interoceptive body awareness and sensory-processing sensitivity. The results of this study may have implications for understanding the underlying mechanisms of body image disturbances in EDs, and inform the development of clinical interventions for individuals with subthreshold EDs.

The posterior superior temporal gyrus (pSTG) has been implicated in the integration of auditory feedback and motor system for controlling vocal production. However, the question as to whether and how the pSTG is causally involved in vocal feedback control is currently unclear. To this end, the present study selectively stimulated the left or right pSTG with continuous theta burst stimulation (c-TBS) in healthy participants, then used event-related potentials to investigate neurobehavioral changes in response to altered auditory feedback during vocal pitch regulation. The results showed that, compared to control (vertex) stimulation, c-TBS over the right pSTG led to smaller vocal compensations for pitch perturbations accompanied by smaller cortical N1 and larger P2 responses. Enhanced P2 responses received contributions from the right-lateralized temporal and parietal regions as well as the insula, and were significantly correlated with suppressed vocal compensations. Surprisingly, these effects were not found when comparing c-TBS over the left pSTG with control stimulation. Our findings provide evidence, for the first time, that supports a causal relationship between right, but not left, pSTG and auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation. This lends support to a right-lateralized contribution of the pSTG in not only the bottom-up detection of vocal feedback errors but also the involvement of driving motor commands for error correction in a top-down manner.

Background: A growing body of literature has implicated the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) in the online monitoring of vocal production through auditory feedback. Specifically, disruption of or damage to the left DLPFC leads to exaggerated compensatory vocal responses to altered auditory feedback. It is conceivable that enhancing the cortical excitability of the left DLPFC may produce inhibitory influences on vocal feedback control by reducing vocal compensations. Methods: We used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) to modulate cortical excitability of the left DLPFC and examined its effects on auditory-motor integration for vocal pitch regulation. Seventeen healthy young adults vocalized vowel sounds while hearing their voice pseudo-randomly pitchshifted by ±50 or ±200 cents, either during (online) or after (offline) receiving active or sham a-tDCS over the left DLPFC. Results: Active a-tDCS over the left DLPFC led to significantly smaller peak magnitudes and shorter peak times of vocal compensations for pitch perturbations than sham stimulation. In addition, this effect was consistent regardless of the timing of a-tDCS (online or offline stimulation) and the size and direction of the pitch perturbation. Conclusion: These findings provide the first causal evidence that a-tDCS over the left DLPFC can facilitate auditory-motor integration for compensatory adjustment to errors in vocal output. Reduced and accelerated vocal compensations caused by a-tDCS over left DLPFC support the hypothesis of a top-down neural mechanism that exerts inhibitory control over vocal motor behavior through auditory feedback. Society has become increasingly dependent on telecommunication, which has been shown to negatively impact vocal function. This study explores the use of sidetone regulation during audio-visual communication as one potential technique to alleviate the effects of telecommunication on the voice. The speech acoustics of 18 participants with typical voices were measured during conversational tasks during three conditions of sidetone amplification: baseline (no sidetone amplification), low sidetone amplification, and high sidetone amplification. Vocal intensity, vocal quality (estimated using acoustic measures of the low-high ratio and the smoothed cepstral peak prominence), and self-perceived vocal effort were used to measure the impacts of sidetone amplification on vocal function. Compared to baseline, there were statistically significant decreases in vocal intensity and increases in low-high ratio in the high level of sidetone amplification condition. Changes in these measures were not significantly correlated. When asked to rank conditions based on their perceived vocal effort, participants most often ranked the high level of sidetone amplification as least effortful; however, the visual-analog ratings of vocal effort were not significantly different between conditions. The smoothed cepstral peak prominence did not change with varying levels of sidetone amplification. Vocal intensity decreased with high levels of sidetone amplification. High levels of sidetone amplification also resulted in increases in the low-high ratio, which were shown to be more than just a byproduct of decreased vocal intensity. The impact of sidetone amplification on vocal effort was less clear, but results suggested that participants generally decreased their vocal effort with increased levels of sidetone amplification. This was a preliminary study and future work is warranted in a population of participants with voice complaints and in a more noisy, realistic environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: An extension of the DIVA model to include EEG is presented and initially validated using group-level statistics. The DIVA_EEG expands the number of scenarios in which vocal and speech behaviors can be assessed and has potential applications for personalized model-driven interventions. The neurocomputational model 'Directions into Velocities of Articulators' (DIVA) was developed to account for various aspects of normal and disordered speech production and acquisition. The neural substrates of DIVA were established through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), providing physiological validation of the model. This study introduces DIVA_EEG an extension of DIVA that utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) to leverage the high temporal resolution and broad availability of EEG over fMRI. For the development of DIVA_EEG, EEG-like signals were derived from original equations describing the activity of the different DIVA maps. Synthetic EEG associated with the utterance of syllables was generated when both unperturbed and perturbed auditory feedback (first formant perturbations) were simulated. The cortical activation maps derived from synthetic EEG closely resembled those of the original DIVA model. To validate DIVA_EEG, the EEG of individuals with typical voices (N = 30) was acquired during an altered auditory feedback paradigm. The resulting empirical brain activity maps significantly overlapped with those predicted by DIVA_EEG. In conjunction with other recent model extensions, DIVA_EEG lays the foundations for constructing a complete neurocomputational framework to tackle vocal and speech disorders, which can guide model-driven personalized interventions. The present study investigated the neural oscillatory correlates of impaired vocal sensorimotor control in left-hemisphere stroke. Electroencephalography (EEG) signals were recorded from 34 stroke and 46 control subjects during speech vowel vocalization and listening tasks under normal and pitch-shifted auditory feedback. Time-frequency analyses revealed aberrantly decreased theta (4–8 Hz) and increased gamma band (30–80 Hz) power in frontal and posterior parieto-occipital regions as well as reduced alpha (8–13 Hz) and beta (13–30 Hz) desynchronization over sensorimotor areas before speech vowel vocalization in left-hemisphere stroke compared with controls. Subjects with the stroke also presented with aberrant modulation of broadband (4–80 Hz) neural oscillations over sensorimotor regions after speech vowel onset during vocalization and listening under normal and altered auditory feedback. We found that the atypical pattern of broadband neural oscillatory modulation was correlated with diminished vocal feedback error compensation behavior and the severity of co-existing language-related aphasia symptoms associated with left-hemisphere stroke. These findings indicate complex interplays between the underlying mechanisms of speech and language and their deficits in post-stroke aphasia. This study investigated the effect of semantic focus on pitch auditory feedback control in the production of phrasal prosody through an experiment using pitch-shifted auditory feedback. We hypothesized that pitch-shift responses would be mediated by semantic focus because highly informative focus types, such as corrective focus, impose more specific constraints on the prosodic form of a phrase and require greater consistency in the production of pitch excursions compared to sentences with no such focus elements. Twenty-eight participants produced sentences with and without corrective focus while their auditory feedback was briefly and unexpectedly perturbed in pitch by +/−200 cents at the start of the sentence. The magnitude and latency of the reflexive pitch-shift responses were measured as a reflection of auditory feedback control. Our results matched our prediction that corrective focus would elicit larger pitch-shift responses, supporting our hypothesis that auditory feedback control is mediated by semantic focus. Background: Bodily illusions can be used to investigate the experience of being in a body by manipulating the underlying processes of multisensory integration. Research suggests that people with eating disorders (EDs) may have impairments in visual, interoceptive, proprioceptive, and tactile bodily perception. Furthermore, people with EDs also show abnormalities in integrating multisensory visuo-tactile and visual-auditory signals related to the body, which may contribute to the development of body image disturbances. Visuo-auditory integration abnormalities have been observed also in people with subthreshold ED symptomatology. However, it remains unclear whether these impairments are specific to bodily signals or if they extend to any auditory signals. Methods: We will recruit 50 participants (aged 18–24; females assigned at birth) with ED symptomatology (subthreshold group) and 50 control participants. The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire will be administered to screen for ED symptomatology and divide the sample into two groups accordingly (control and subthreshold group using a clinical cut-off score of 2.8). The strength of both illusions will be measured implicitly with estimations of body part position and size, and explicitly with self-report questionnaires. As a secondary aim, regression analysis will be run to test the predictive role of susceptibility for both illusions on interoceptive body awareness (measured by the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness Scale) and sensory-processing sensitivity (measured by the Highly Sensitive Person Scale). Discussion: Our study may contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms underlying body image disturbances. The results may pave the way for novel clinical interventions targeting early symptoms prior to the development of the disorder in young females. Recently, the movement and muscle usage principles have been elucidated by analyzing the kinematic and dynamic parameters of various body parts during movements and exercises. Feedback training methods based on these findings have also been proposed to improve athlete performance. For instance, prior research on pedaling exercises has shown that considering muscle contraction patterns and activation states can help cyclists avoid muscle fatigue. However, few studies have investigated the effects of both muscle contraction patterns and muscle activation states during pedaling exercises. Therefore, this study proposes a novel pedaling training system that provides visual and auditory feedback on the muscle contraction and activation of a cyclist's lower limb during pedaling exercise. This may help cyclists better understand and optimize muscle contraction and activation patterns. The proposed system visualizes muscle contraction patterns and activation states during pedaling motion and generates sound for cyclists at the ideal crank angle for optimal muscle activation timing. This allows cyclists to recognize the optimal timing for muscle activation based on these patterns. The effectiveness of the proposed system was validated by performing a trial pedaling training session for an amateur cyclist and comparing the muscle contraction and activation states among the pre-trial, feedback-trial, and post-trial. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed system improves muscle activation timing effectively during pedaling training.

This paper presents the design, development, and feasibility testing of a wearable sonification system for real-time posture monitoring and feedback. The system utilizes inexpensive motion sensors integrated into a compact, wearable package to measure body movements and standing balance continuously. The sensor data is processed through sonification algorithms to generate real-time auditory feedback cues indicating the user’s balance and posture. The system aims to improve movement awareness and physical conditioning, with potential applications in balance rehabilitation and physical therapy. Initial feasibility testing was conducted with a small group of healthy participants performing standing balance tasks with eyes open and closed. Results indicate that the real-time audio feedback improved participants’ ability to maintain balance, especially in the case of closed eyes. This preliminary study demonstrates the potential for wearable sonification systems to provide intuitive real-time feedback on posture and movement to improve motor skills and balance.

This study explores the conventional ‘funneling’ method by introducing two extra locations beyond the virtual reality (VR) controller boundaries, terming it the extended funneling technique. Thirty-two participants engaged in a localization task, with their responses recorded using eye-tracking technology. They were tasked with localizing a virtual ping-pong ball as it bounced both within and outside their virtual hands on a virtual board. Both the experimental and control groups received simultaneous spatial audio and vibrotactile feedback. The experimental group received vibrotactile feedback with extended funneling, while the control group received vibrotactile feedback without funneling for comparison. The results indicate that the experimental group, benefiting from the extended funneling technique, demonstrated a significantly higher accuracy rate (41.79%) in localizing audio–vibrotactile stimuli compared to the control group (28.21%). No significant differences emerged in embodiment or workload scores. These findings highlight the effectiveness of extended funneling for enhancing the localization of sensory stimuli in VR.

In humans, mutations in the transcription factor forkhead box P2 (FOXP2) result in language disorders associated with altered striatal structure. Like speech, birdsong is learned through social interactions during maturational critical periods, and it relies on auditory feedback during initial learning and on-going maintenance. Hearing loss causes learned vocalizations to deteriorate in adult humans and songbirds. In the adult songbird brain, most FoxP2-enriched regions (e.g., cortex, thalamus) show a static expression level, but in the striatal song control nucleus, area X, FoxP2 is regulated by singing and social context: when juveniles and adults sing alone, its levels drop, and songs are more variable. When males sing to females, FoxP2 levels remain high, and songs are relatively stable: this "on-line" regulation implicates FoxP2 in ongoing vocal processes, but its role in the auditory-based maintenance of learned vocalization has not been examined. To test this, we overexpressed FoxP2 in both hearing and deafened adult zebra finches and assessed effects on song sung alone versus songs directed to females. In intact birds singing alone, no changes were detected between songs of males expressing FoxP2 or a GFP construct in area X, consistent with the marked stability of mature song in this species. In contrast, songs of males overexpressing FoxP2 became more variable and were less preferable to females, unlike responses to songs of GFP-expressing control males. In deafened birds, song deteriorated more rapidly following FoxP2 overexpression relative to GFP controls. Together, these experiments suggest that behavior-driven FoxP2 expression and auditory feedback interact to precisely maintain learned vocalizations.

Abstract Background The potential of auditory feedback for motor learning in the rehabilitation of various diseases has become apparent in recent years. However, since the volume of auditory feedback has played a minor role so far and its influence has hardly been considered, we investigate the volume effect of auditory feedback on gait pattern and gait direction and its interaction with pitch. Methods Thirty-two healthy young participants were randomly divided into two groups: Group 1 (n = 16) received a high pitch (150-250 Hz) auditory feedback; group 2 (n = 16) received a lower pitch (95-112 Hz) auditory feedback. The feedback consisted of a real-time sonification of the right and left foot ground contact. After an initial condition (no auditory feedback and full vision), both groups realized a 30-minute habituation period followed by a 30-minute asymmetry period. At any condition, the participants were asked to walk blindfolded and with auditory feedback towards a target at 15 m distance and were stopped 5 m before the target. Three different volume conditions were applied in random order during the habituation period: loud, normal, and quiet. In the subsequent asymmetry period, the three volume conditions baseline, right quiet and left quiet were applied in random order. Results In the habituation phase, the step width from the loud to the quiet condition showed a significant interaction of volume*pitch with a decrease at high pitch (group 1) and an increase at lower pitch (group 2) (group 1: loud 1.02 ± 0.310, quiet 0.98 ± 0.301; group 2: loud 0.95 ± 0.229, quiet 1.11 ± 0.298). In the asymmetry period, a significantly increased ground contact time on the side with reduced volume could be found (right quiet: left foot 0.988 ± 0.033, right foot 1.003 ± 0.040, left quiet: left foot 1.004 ± 0.036, right foot 1.002 ± 0.033). Conclusions Our results suggest that modifying the volume of auditory feedback can be an effective way to improve gait symmetry. This could facilitate gait therapy and rehabilitation of hemiparetic and arthroplasty patients, in particular if gait improvement based on verbal corrections and conscious motor control is limited.

When humans are exposed to a predictable external perturbation, they usually generate anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs), which reduce the effect of potential body disturbance. However, when an external perturbation comes from behind and as such unpredicted, no APAs are generated, which challenges postural control. The aim of this study was to examine whether humans exposed to unpredictable perturbations could generate APAs using an auditory cue. Ten young adults were exposed to external perturbations hitting their shoulders from behind with or without an auditory cue prior to the physical impact. Electromyography (EMG) activities of eight trunk and leg muscles and center-of-pressure (COP) displacements were recorded and analyzed during the anticipatory and compensatory phases of postural control. Outcome measures included the latencies and integrals of muscle activities, COP displacements, and indices of co-contraction and reciprocal activation of muscles. The results showed that young adults were able to rely on an auditory cue to generate APAs prior to external perturbations coming from behind, and they demonstrated stronger APAs with training. Moreover, they utilized co-contraction of ventral and dorsal muscles as their APA response. The outcome provides a foundation for future studies aiming at using auditory cues to facilitate the generation of APAs and improve postural control in people with impaired balance while exposed to perturbations. The moving Rubber Hand Illusion (mRHI) is a paradigm which investigates the sense of ownership (SoO) and the sense of agency (SoA) towards an artificial hand. This study aimed to highlight the role of the SoA on the development of the SoO according to the information provided by an action-related auditory cue. We expected that a reinforcement of the SoO illusion by the SoA could not occur if the sound of the action was removed. In order to assess the SoO and SoA, 25 participants performed the task in the the active congruent, passive congruent, and active incongruent conditions. Also, the onset time of the SoO in the congruent conditions was reported. The results confirmed our hypothesis, showing that agency did not play a pivotal role in promoting the onset of the ownership illusion if ecological auditory feedback was removed. Sensory feedback plays an important role in speech motor control. One of the main sources of evidence for this is studies in which online auditory feedback is perturbed during ongoing speech. In motor control, it is therefore crucial to distinguish between sensory feedback and externally generated sensory events. This is called source monitoring. Previous altered feedback studies have taken non-conscious source monitoring for granted, as automatic responses to altered sensory feedback imply that the feedback changes are processed as self-caused. However, the role of conscious source monitoring is unclear. The current study investigated whether conscious source monitoring modulates responses to unexpected pitch changes in auditory feedback. During the first block, some participants spontaneously attributed the pitch shifts to themselves (self-blamers) while others attributed them to an external source (other-blamers). Before Block 2, all participants were informed that the pitch shifts were experimentally induced. The self-blamers then showed a reduction in response magnitude in Block 2 compared with Block 1, while the other-blamers did not. This suggests that conscious source monitoring modulates responses to altered auditory feedback, such that consciously ascribing feedback to oneself leads to larger compensation responses. These results can be accounted for within the dominant comparator framework, where conscious source monitoring could modulate the gain on sensory feedback. Alternatively, the results can be naturally explained from an inferential framework, where conscious knowledge may bias the priors in a Bayesian process to determine the most likely source of a sensory event. This paper presents an image-audio dataset and a mid-level image sonification system that strives to help visually impaired users understand the semantic content of an image and access visual information via a combination of semantic audio and an easily decodable audio generated in real time, both triggered by sliding, taping, holding actions when the users explore the image on a touch screen or with a pointer. Firstly, we segmented the original image using a label fusion model and based on the user position in the image, a sonified signal is generated using musical notes and meaningful visual information within the active region like the color and the luminance, then the gradient and the texture. Secondly, we integrated the semantic understanding of the image into our model using DeepLab semantic segmentation of the image and created a dataset of audio and images aligned on the 20 classes of the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset. The dataset of images are organized based on color, gradient, texture for low-level sonification and on semantic content with sounds for mid-level sonification. Thirdly, in order to provide both types of information in a complementary way, the slide, tap and hold actions of a touch screen are incorporated in the model. The semantic audio providing a brief description of the visual object is played on slide action, the generated signal with color details of the object on the tap action, gradient and texture of the object on hold action. Finally, we validated our sonification model on the provided dataset during a pilot study and the subjects were generally able to identify the objects in the image, the color of the objects and even provide a general description of the scene of the image. Our system could be useful to visually impaired persons in a photo sharing application using a smartphone or for painting art description in a digital museum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Accumulating evidence has shown significant contributions of the right cerebellum to auditory-motor integration for vocal production. Whether the left cerebellum is likewise involved in vocal motor control, however, remains unclear. Methods: By applying neuronavigated continuous and intermittent theta burst stimulation (cTBS/iTBS) over the left cerebellar lobule VII (Crus I), the present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated whether the left cerebellum exerts causal effects in modulating auditory feedback control of vocal pitch production. After receiving cTBS, iTBS, or sham stimulation over the left cerebellum, a group of fifteen young adults produced sustained vowels while hearing their voice unexpectedly shifted in pitch upwards or downwards by 200 cents. The effects of cerebellar stimulation were assessed by measuring the vocal and ERP (N1/P2) responses to pitch perturbations across the conditions. Results: When compared to sham stimulation, cTBS or iTBS over the left cerebellar lobule VII (Crus I) led to no systematic changes in vocal compensations for pitch perturbations in auditory feedback. Also, the cortical N1/P2 responses did not vary significantly across the three stimulation sessions. Conclusion: These findings present the first neurobehavioral evidence suggesting that the left cerebellum is not causally associated with auditory feedback control of vocal production. Together with previously reported causal effects of the right cerebellum in modulating vocal pitch regulation, the present study lends support to the hypothesis that there is a functional lateralization of the cerebellum in vocal motor control though auditory feedback. There is a growing need for robots that can be remotely controlled to perform tasks of one's own choice. However, the SoA (Sense of Agency: the sense of recognizing that the motion of an observed object is caused by oneself) is reduced because the subject of the robot motion is identified as external due to shared control. To address this issue, we aimed to suppress the decline in SoA by presenting auditory feedback that aims to blur the distinction between self and others. We performed the tracking task in a virtual environment under four different auditory feedback conditions, with varying levels of automation to manipulate the virtual robot gripper. Experimental results showed that the proposed auditory feedback suppressed the decrease in the SoA at a medium level of automation. It is suggested that our proposed auditory feedback could blur the distinction between self and others, and that the operator attributes the subject of the motion of the manipulated object to himself. Auditory feedback is important to reduce movement error and improve motor performance during a precise motor task. Accurate motion guided by auditory feedback may rely on the neural muscle transmission pathway between the sensorimotor area and the effective muscle. However, it remains unclear how neural activities and sensorimotor loops play a role in enhancing performance. The present study uses an auditory feedback system by simultaneously recording electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyography (EMG), and exert force information to measure corticomuscular coherence (CMC), neural activity, and motor performance during precise unilateral right-hand pinch by using the thumb and the index finger with and without auditory feedback. This study confirms three results. First, compared with no auditory feedback, auditory feedback decreases movement errors. Second, compared with no auditory feedback, auditory feedback decreased the power spectrum in the beta band in the bimanual sensorimotor cortex and the alpha band in the ipsilateral sensorimotor cortex. Finally, CMC was computed between effector muscle of right hand and contralateral sensorimotor cortex. Analyses reveals that the CMC of beta band significantly decreases in auditory feedback condition compared with no auditory feedback condition. The results indicate that auditory feedback decreases the power spectral in the alpha and beta bands and decreases corticospinal connection in the beta band during precise hand control. This study provides a new perspective on the effect of auditory feedback on behavior and brain activity and offers a new idea for designing more suitable and effective rehabilitation and training strategies to improve fine motor performance. Background: Reflexive pitch perturbation experiments are commonly used to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying vocal motor control. In these experiments, the fundamental frequency–the acoustic correlate of pitch–of a speech signal is shifted unexpectedly and played back to the speaker via headphones in near real-time. In response to the shift, speakers increase or decrease their fundamental frequency in the direction opposing the shift so that their perceived pitch is closer to what they intended. The goal of the current work is to develop a quantitative model of responses to reflexive perturbations that can be interpreted in terms of the physiological mechanisms underlying the response and that captures both group-mean data and individual subject responses. Methods: A model framework was established that allowed the specification of several models based on Proportional-Integral-Derivative and State-Space/Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA) model classes. The performance of 19 models was compared in fitting experimental data from two published studies. The models were evaluated in terms of their ability to capture both population-level responses and individual differences in sensorimotor control processes. Results: A three-parameter DIVA model performed best when fitting group-mean data from both studies; this model is equivalent to a single-rate state-space model and a first-order low pass filter model. The same model also provided stable estimates of parameters across samples from individual subject data and performed among the best models to differentiate between subjects. The three parameters correspond to gains in the auditory feedback controller’s response to a perceived error, the delay of this response, and the gain of the somatosensory feedback controller’s “resistance” to this correction. Excellent fits were also obtained from a four-parameter model with an additional auditory velocity error term; this model was better able to capture multi-component reflexive responses seen in some individual subjects. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate the stereotyped nature of an individual’s responses to pitch perturbations. Further, we identified a model that captures population responses to pitch perturbations and characterizes individual differences in a stable manner with parameters that relate to underlying motor control capabilities.
