In genetic criticism, scholarly editing, authorial philology and, more generally, for the study of authorial manuscripts and writing processes, it is essential to order and classify the textual witnesses and their relationships. This article presents two datasets of so-called 'genetic networks', that is representation of the genetic entities (witnesses, publications, dossiers) and their relationships, modelled according to the GENO 1.0 ontology. The datasets contain genetic networks of the works of two Swiss authors: the main publications of Gustave Roud (1897–1976) and the short story "En mer" by Bernard Comment (1960). Italian philology ,textual criticism ,classical writers’ editions ,authorial philology ,Literature: history and criticism - Abstract
In the early 19th-century, Milan was the most active Italian city in the publishing of books. There, collectors, librarians, scholars of ancient literature and young men of letters were protagonists in an intense activity of publishing classical texts. New editions of Divina Commedia, Petrarch's Rime, Boccaccio’s Decameron, Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso, Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata and of many works by writers of the 18th century were published in Milan, in particular by Società Tipografica de' Classici Italiani (Italian Classical Writers’ Printing Society). In a period rich in cultural and linguistic debates, even discussions on the procedures for publishing texts took on a new importance. By analysing the statements of the editors, investigating their textual choices, following their polemics, Alberto Cadioli, one of the well-known Italian textual bibliography scholars for the modern texts, underlines the importance of the «sana critica», the «sound criticism» – i.e. the philological practice, according to the language of that time - with which classical texts were published in Milan in the first decades of the 19th century. This book, that offers unknown data and a large documentation, reveals theoretical unexpectedly Modern observations and methodological indications, hidden in pages forgotten for many years.

In the De doctoribus seu inventoribus inserted in the Zibaldone Magliabechiano, Boccaccio reports names and short biographies of several distinguished men and women that he read in Paolino Veneto’s Chronologia Magna. By comparing this list with its original source, the article means to reconstruct the modus operandi of the Certaldese during the study for the production of his erudite works of the late age, highlighting the importance of such a tool for understanding the intellectual baggage of its author and his methods of reworking the material.

The contribution presents the first significant results of the application to some important case studies - from Petrarca's Bucolicum Carmen (Fazion, Ventura), to some papers of Giuseppe Raimondi's Fund (Obbiso, Rossi), to Carlo Levi's Quaderno a cancelli (Gasperina) - of different types of multispectral analysis, with innovative tools such as the Forinst-MSM microscope, acquired by the Department of Classical Philology and Italianistics thanks to the Department of Excellence project 2017-2022. The microscope, which was used both on site and at the places where the analyzed manuscript documents were preserved, not only magnifies the detail, allowing the analysis of the stratigraphy of the writings and the identification of the various correction campaigns, but also, thanks to a filter wheel, can select the different wavelengths refracted by the light on the analyzed pigment, and thus use the most suitable visual band for deciphering the writings. This extremely useful tool was presented at the 2019 and 2020 Researchers' Night, to great interest.

The recognition and dating of corrective stratigraphies, in the study of manuscript writings, is fundamental in the preparation of critical editions, for author philology and variant criticism, and in cases of authorship. The analysis of the different "corrective campaigns" of a text can now be carried out with some imaging techniques, from RTI, to interferometers, to photometric stereo, which allow to reconstruct the third dimension: "z", that of time: a technology widely used in cultural heritage, but still not very widespread in the study of texts. The contribution illustrates some cases of 3D reconstruction of manuscripts, from Dante to Leopardi, and proposes a protocol for sharing digital reproduction standards.

authorial philology ,creative thinking ,digital humanities ,tei encoding ,text mining ,General Works ,History of scholarship and learning. The humanities ,AZ20-999 - Abstract
What is the meaning of the authors’ interventions on their own texts? Variants Mining aims to answer this question by gaining empirical insight into creative thinking. The research focuses on pre-established categories of authorial variants to provide scholars with statistics of corrections, automatically computed starting from either the PDF document or the TEI encoding of the referring critical edition of the text. Finally, the output is made easily understandable thanks to a specifically tailored data visualization tool. This innovative comparative analysis on the correction modalities would allow to provide new philological readings that shed light on the creative process of different authors and assess if these interventions can be read as recurring patterns. Therefore, this methodology promotes a more conscious insight on the historical evolution of the authorial thought through a straightforward representation. A pilot analysis will focus on the case studies of Giacomo Leopardi’s Canti and Alessandro Manzoni’s I promessi sposi to understand the difference not only between the two key authors of Italian Romanticism, but also between poetry and prose.

Tanganelli, Paolo and Tanganelli, Paolo
- Abstract
The group of Hispanists who recognise themselves in this School have increasingly favoured research on authorial variants, following the outstanding examples of the Criticism of Variants provided by Segre and Caravaggi, as well as Mazzocchi’s theoretical reflections. This compendium focuses on the following lines of research: 1) Andrea Baldissera on Francisco Borja («prince of Esquilache»), Cristóbal de Virués, Luis Lobera de Ávila, Gil de los Arcos y Alférez, Miguel de Molinos, Santa Teresa de Jesús and Ramón de la Cruz; 2) Rafael Bonilla Cerezo on Cayetano María Huarte y Ruiz de Briviesca and Juan Alfonso de Guerra y Sandoval; 3) Andrea Bresadola on Manuscript 3911 of the Biblioteca Nacional de España, Miguel de Unamuno, Luis Martín-Santos, Manuel Lueiro Rey and Miguel Delibes; 4) Mirko Brizi on Ginés Pérez de Hita; 5) Giovanni Caravaggi on Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca, Miguel Hernández and Manuel Altolaguirre; 6) Marta Fabbri on Miguel de Unamuno; 7) Laura Fernández Rodríguez on Tassis y Peralta; 8) Ornella Gianesin on Pedro de Oña; 9) Giulia Giorgi on Alonso de Castillo Solórzano and Miguel de Unamuno; 10) Paola Laskaris on Pedro de Padilla; 11) Eugenio Maggi on Max Aub; 12) Olga Perotti on Santa Teresa de Jesús and Miguel de Unamuno; 13) Paolo Pintacuda on Cosme de Aldana, Miguel Giner, Federico García Lorca, the Spanish translation of Marinetti’s Proclamation and the Italian versions of Manuel Machado’s poems; 14) Paolo Tanganelli on Saint John of the Cross and Miguel de Unamuno.

- Abstract
It is the first collection in one single volume of all the cantos in the work, including the epilogue, which were formerly lying scattered around in unbound folds and loose sheets. As the first complete fair copy, this manuscript provided Verdaguer with the opportunity of attemping a first critical reading of the poem as a whole, during which he discovered passages that could be improved or removed. He left his thoughts on the pages of the manuscript either as notes in the margin or in the form of numerous changes and alternatives. On some occasions, he even composed new passages: the «Cant de Gentil», the 10th canto, perhaps the verses devoted to Ripoll in the 11th canto. These inclusions in turn led to other changes in the poem

"A stark departure from traditional philology, What is Authorial Philology? is the first comprehensive treatment of authorial philology as a discipline in its own right. It provides readers with an excellent introduction to the theory and practice of editing ‘authorial texts’ alongside an exploration of authorial philology in its cultural and conceptual architecture. The originality and distinction of this work lies in its clear systematization of a discipline whose autonomous status has only recently been recognised (at least in Italy), though its roots may extend back as far as Giorgio Pasquali. This pioneering volume offers both a methodical set of instructions on how to read critical editions, and a wide range of practical examples, expanding upon the conceptual and methodological apparatus laid out in the first two chapters. By presenting a thorough account of the historical and theoretical framework through which authorial philology developed, Paola Italia and Giulia Raboni successfully reconceptualize the authorial text as an ever-changing organism, subject to alteration and modification. What is Authorial Philology? will be of great didactic value to students and researchers alike, providing readers with a fuller understanding of the rationale behind different editing practices, and addressing both traditional and newer methods such as the use of the digital medium and its implications. Spanning the whole Italian tradition from Petrarch to Carlo Emilio Gadda, this ground-breaking volume provokes us to consider important questions concerning a text’s dynamism, the extent to which an author is ‘agentive’, and, most crucially, about the very nature of what we read."

The article aims to provide a general perspective on the studies of authorial philology applied to the Hispanic world, with particular reference to the specific issues of Spanish poetry in the 16th and 17th centuries. After a rapid introduction concerning the birth of these studies and the Italian controversy of the scartafacci, the discourse shifts to the comparison with genetic criticism, in order to highlight the main differences between the two schools. Finally, the work focuses on some significant cases in which reflection on authorial variants can lead to reasoning on broader poetic and literary issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We know that some of these witnesses were controlled by the author himself: we have an autograph (Madrid, Real Biblioteca, MS II/1579), some manuscripts used by the printers of his poetry collections (Palma de Mallorca, Biblioteca March, MS MA16-6-10), and some printed books that the author directly supervised. This paper demonstrates the possibilities of applying authorial philology to the poems of Padilla. We focus on two of the author’s sonnets, in order to highlight problems of textual criticism found therein. Another aim of this paper is to suggest some text editing models useful for the genetic and evolutive representation of these poems.

Correspondence between the company and the playwright, different versions of the script, rehearsal notes, prompt books: a theatre’s archive can preserve the traces of a creative workshop ideally characterized by an ongoing dialogue, of which the recurring reminder “ask the author” can be a telltale sign. Additions, changes and cuts, in the case of a text intended for performance, are generally negotiated by the writer and other members of the creative team according to their respective style choices, knowledge and needs, so the analysis of the resulting palimpsest can help not only to unveil the story of a single play and to assess the role of variants and variations (when present), but also to reconstruct such complex artistic practices as those of contemporary theatre. In the present paper I mean to illustrate and discuss opportunities and problems of authorial philology applied to contemporary playwriting with particular reference to the new texts produced by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre and the documents held by its archive.

The Italian literary tradition shares with the Spanish a wealth of author's genetic manuscripts that is incomparable to that of other European traditions, which is why author philology, a discipline founded by Dante Isella, but which goes back to an ecdotic practice dating back to the 17th century, can also be fruitfully applied to Siglo de Oro manuscripts, as has recently been shown on the Dama Boba. The contribution presents the history and the peculiar method of the discipline, in its relations with Hispanic philology, variant criticism and genetic criticism, and outlines its development prospects, especially those linked to the new digital technologies, from spectrometry to authorship, to the application of AI to the study, also comparative, of authorial corrections.

The contribution reflects on the concrete modalities through which Vittorio Alfieri took care of the printing of his own works. The main features of Alfieri's activity before, after and during the printing of the volumes are analysed, reconstructing the different publishing stages of his literary career, from the first Sienese printing of the tragedies to the definitive printing by Didot, passing through the clandestine edition of the political works in Kehl. In this way, an attempt is made to highlight the theoretical and poetic implications underlying Alfieri's printing practice., Il contributo riflette sulle modalità concrete attraverso cui Vittorio Alfieri curò l’allestimento tipografico delle proprie opere.

The essay aims to reconstruct the history of Manzoni’s Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria through new documents and new witnesses. This short poem was first published by Ruggiero Bonghi in 1883 according to a copy that belonged to Gaetano Giudici. In 1922 Michele Scherillo provided a new edition with variants, on the basis of a new copy that was considered lost until now. The text given by Scherillo was accepted by Ghisalberti in 1957, therefore by all later publishers. Today, the manuscript that belonged to Scherillo has been found. It casts serious doubts on the publisher’s behavior, therefore on the most widespread form of the text., Il contributo ricostruisce la storia dei manzoniani Versi improvvisati sopra il nome di Maria alla luce di nuove testimonianze.

A pilot analysis will focus on the case studies of Giacomo Leopardi’s Canti and Alessandro Manzoni’s I promessi sposi to understand the difference not only between the two key authors of Italian Romanticism, but also between poetry and prose., Umanistica Digitale, No. 10 (2021)

- Abstract

- Abstract
Resulta verosímil que P represente la redacción final del texto, pero no puede demostrarse., We study in this work a case within the complex Herrerian textual problem, that of the Elegy to the death of don Pedro de Zúñiga, deceased ca. 1570-1571. We have received two complete testimonies of the poem, one in a manuscript from 1578 and the other printed in the posthumous edition of Herrera’s Versos by Francisco Pacheco (1619), in addition to the partial testimony (three verses), but very useful, which is collected in the Anotaciones a Garcilaso (1580). The analysis of the variants shows that version P is the result of an intense and coherent rewriting of the poem, marked by cultist intensification. This leads us to conclude that its author is Herrera himself, at some point between 1582 (Algunas obras) and 1597 (date of his death). It is plausible that P represents the final redaction of the text, but it cannot be proved.

This paper analyses the posthumous editions of Vincenzo Monti’s Mascheroniana canto IV and V. The two texts were not published during author’s lifetime, and they circulated among Monti’s closest friends only. Consequently, it has been necessary clarifying the source of the text printed by the very first publishers and investigating the work of the editors, which turned out to be arbitrary as it doesn’t mirror the intentions of Monti.

The paper focuses on the pre-text of Vittorio Alfieri’s Rime and analyzes the rubrics, journal-type notes and meta-notes (aimed at contextualize or comment the poems) in order to explore the role given by the author to his draft manuscripts. While Alfieri’s collection of poems has usually been considered as a sort of personal diary in which he made a literary transfiguration of event-based contents, we will show how Alfieri tends to use his manuscripts to seal his literary self-portrait to his biographical self., Il contributo si concentra sull’avantesto delle Rime di Vittorio Alfieri e analizza le didascalie, le note di carattere diaristico, e le metapostille (di contestualizzazione o di commento) per esplorare la funzione attribuita dall’autore ai suoi manoscritti di lavoro.

The works of Pedro de Padilla have sparked significant scholarly interest, thanks to editions of both manuscript and print collections of his poetry.

This article traces the most crucial moments in the biographical relationship and friendship between poets J.V. Foix and Gabriel Ferrater focusing on what could be considered its culmination: the poem that Foix wrote after the death of his friend in the summer of 1973 at Port de la Selva. Specifically, the study proposes an interpretation of what Foix achieved with the changes he made, in the various versions of the text that have been preserved, in the famous two verses that close the poem while trying to objectify, from the analysis of its repercussions on rhyme, prosody and rhythm, what the masterful poetic gift of the poet of Sarrià knew how to write in an absolutely intuitive way.
