This article delves into freelancers'"effort-bargain" experiences within platform work, where effort is exchanged for income. The study of experiences enables us to understand how freelancer–platform relationships evolve in light of the platforms' lack of recognition of freelancers' skills. Drawing on 63 interviews across four platforms within the online labor market (OLM), the authors present a theoretical framework explaining a "skill-driven continuum" in such relationships. At one extreme (cooperation), freelancers experience the effort-bargain as recognition exchange, facilitated by non-competitive, regular transactions allowing them to monetize their skills. At the other extreme (exploitation), freelancers experience their skills going unrecognized because of competitive bidding for casual gigs. While freelancers with specialized skills are sometimes able to disintermediate, thereby retaining recognition by claiming autonomy and monetary gains, those with generalized skills may resort to gaming, seeking to gain recognition by boosting their ratings. The Industry 5.0 concept has placed human needs at the heart of industrial processes. This raises the question of how new technologies can enhance employee decision-making processes and influence the evolution of team autonomy. Recent studies have shown that the best way to measure these impacts is to conduct experiments in complex and realistic environmental settings. However, the main methods cannot satisfy this requirement while controlling the events and associated variables, whereas a set of use cases can. Therefore, a model should be defined to generate and structure these use cases while validating their relevance. Following the decomposition of the global research objective and case-definition recommendations, this study proposes a framework for designing complementary use cases to evaluate the impact of new technologies on emerging autonomy models in a structured, realistic, and global manner. Based on widely recognised related work, the 6-step framework helps define a coherent context specifying the business process model, agent, autonomy, technologies to be implemented, their fields of action, detailed variable collection protocol, and experimental setup. A cross-analysis of existing cases from the literature and empirical use of the framework validated the relevance of the model in designing experimental environments that are close to real-world settings. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine whether, drawing on the perception of their coaches, the application of the pedagogical model of sport education could be associated with satisfying the basic psychological needs of children from socially vulnerable backgrounds. Method: A 36-session sport education season was implemented within a community program for youths from disadvantaged environments. Three coaches, one researcher, and 31 children aged 9–11 years (17 boys and 14 girls) of diverse ethnicities participated. Qualitative data were obtained through four focus groups conducted during the program in addition to the research diary of the researcher, who played the role of participant observer. Results: The coaches observed a progressive evolution in the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, relatedness, and the need referred to as novelty. Discussion/Conclusion: We may conclude that sport education can be a valuable tool to improve the satisfaction of these needs in children from socially vulnerable backgrounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, I present a sociological approach to the problem of meaningful work that dwells on its broad social and cultural sources, as opposed to the focus on subjective and organizational factors currently prevailing in the field. Specifically, I consider two sociological perspectives, those of community and autonomy, as important conceptual tools for understanding the ambivalent character of modern culture in providing individuals with a sense of meaningfulness of their activities. I also review some of the existing research on meaningful work and interpret it through this conceptual distinction, both to show the latter's relevance for the field and to identify the gaps it might help fill. As a result, based on the sociological perspectives, I propose a general conceptual model and discuss five directions to further advance the theoretical comprehension of meaningful work, and I suggest some implications of these perspectives for normative business ethics. Purpose: To examine the sex differences in performance and perceived fatigue during resistance training prescribed using traditional (TRA) and autoregulation rest-redistribution training (ARRT) approaches. Methods: Twelve resistance-trained men and 12 women completed 2 sessions including the bench-press exercise matched for load (75% of 1-repetition maximum), volume (24 repetitions), and total rest (240 s). Sessions were performed in a counterbalanced randomized design with TRA consisting of 3 sets of 8 repetitions with 120-second interset rest and ARRT employing a personalized combination of clusters, repetitions per cluster, and between-clusters rest regulated with a 20% velocity-loss threshold. The effects of TRA and ARRT on velocity loss, unilateral isometric peak force, and rating of fatigue (ROF) were compared between sexes. Results: The velocity loss was generally lower during ARRT compared with TRA (−0.47% [0.11%]), with velocity loss being mitigated by ARRT to a greater extent among males compared with females (−0.37% [0.15%]). A smaller unilateral isometric peak force decline was observed after ARRT than TRA among males compared with females (−38.4 [8.4] N). Lower ROF after ARRT than TRA was found among males compared to females (−1.97 [0.55] AU). Additionally, males reported greater ROF than females across both conditions (1.92 [0.53] AU), and ARRT resulted in lower ROF than TRA overall (−0.83 [0.39] AU). Conclusions: The ARRT approach resulted in decreased velocity loss, peak force impairment, and ROF compared with TRA in both sexes. The Self-Determination Theory argues that individuals are optimally motivated when their three Basic Psychological Needs (BPNs) are satisfied, which can be influenced by the learning environment created by the teachers. Student-centered frameworks are permeating worldwide. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the effects of pedagogical models-based interventions in the promotion of students' BPNs. Four databases were searched, and twenty-five articles were retrieved. It was found that most programs had a positive impact on the students' BPNs, but they also uncovered interventions with no effects and a few with mixed results. The present review provides information not only to understand the effects of pedagogical models on the students' BPNs, but also to recognize the elements that could increase the success of future intervention programs. This article shows that longstanding connections established through inclusion in the British Empire were maintained in significant ways after individual countries became independent, but remained within the Commonwealth. Although Britain declined as an international power, and largely lost its empire, it reveals ongoing British soft-power in academic cultures. The article provides a new scholarly analysis, moving away from presumptions about the anglicised university ideal in the Global South. How did British ideas transfer themselves to former colonial universities? Who was involved in the process? To answer to these questions, this research focuses on the transnational activities of the Inter-University Council, the University of London and African and Caribbean universities during the late and post-colonial eras. Liberal, elite and residential education, a balance of teaching and research schemes were combined; institutional autonomy was a further added important elements in the classic British university cultures. However, the notion of Britain’s institutional autonomy differed in colonial universities, but functioned well for protecting their academic freedom. The circulation of British ideas for universities was a means of anglicising overseas universities at the end of empire. This paper follows the efforts of a group of squatters and Occupy activists living in a building (‘The Black Stag’) on the outskirts of London to turn their squat into a social centre. It uses autonomy as a window into debates between squatters as they confronted eviction across a range of urban struggles – the criminalization of squatting, and the eviction of Occupy London in 2012. Autonomy, I argue, has been a vital building block in the London squatters’ movement at a time when criminalization has forced its members into ever more peripheral and derelict urban spaces. However, its emphasis on freedom and decentralization has also risked intensifying political differences within the movement, as disagreements come to dominate, and internal problems eclipse the necessary work required to build and extend that autonomy across distance. As squatters look toward new formal and institutional arrangements in order to re-gain access to the city, their struggles for autonomy matter because they show us, not just why social movements fail to coalesce, but under what conditions they can be collectively assembled and made in common. Background Objectives Methods Results Conclusions Preferences for risk disclosure in population‐based studies assessing Parkinson's disease (PD) risk have not been assessed so far.To examine preferences for risk disclosure in a subset of the European Healthy Brain Aging (HeBA) multicenter study.After a remote PD risk assessment, a structured pilot‐questionnaire on risk disclosure was first presented to participants (≥50 years, without neurodegenerative diseases) during in‐person visits at the Innsbruck study site.From the included 81 participants (63% females, median age 65 years), 79% expressed an unconditional desire to be informed about their PD risk. Confronted with a hypothetical scenario of a positive, specific PD test, most would try to live a healthier lifestyle. Regarding future placebo‐controlled disease‐modification trials, 66% stated they would probably or definitely participate.This pilot‐study shows an open‐minded view of participants towards disclosure of risk for future PD and a proactive attitude regarding dealing with one's risk. Background: Self-Directed Learning (SDL) is a subjective concept with no universally agreed definition. The aim of this project was to obtain the perspectives of Orthopaedic trainee registrars on SDL. Methods: Seven Orthopaedic trainees in the Southwest Peninsula region were recruited in person by the primary author as an Orthopaedic trainee on the same programme as the participants. A one-hour Microsoft teams video interview was arranged at a mutually convenient time exploring several topics including learning resources, experiential learning, learning strategies, training programme requirements and assessment. The interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Transcripts were coded using Corbin's and Strauss's published coding method and analysed to develop a model of SDL in this training context. Results: Six learning stages were identified from the coded transcripts and these stages were like Knowles's stages of SDL. Participants felt less autonomous during the identification of knowledge gaps, goal setting and evaluation of learning stages. Participants perceived to have more control over the selection of strategies, and learning stages of SDL. The factors which influenced autonomy at various stages of SDL included supervisors, experiential learning opportunities, service provision competing with learning opportunities, training programme requirements and the power dynamic between trainees and supervisors. Self-advocacy by the trainees for experiential learning opportunities and for their progression was an additional action relevant to SDL that was evident. Online learning resources such as Orthobullets.com, YouTube videos, external revision courses, collaboration and webinars encouraged more autonomy with SDL. Conclusions: Although the United kingdom's Trauma and Orthopaedic curriculum is described as trainee led and SDL is encouraged, in practice Orthopaedic trainees felt limited autonomy with the various stages of SDL due to external factors including their level of experience and the training environment. Trainees' experiences around self-advocacy highlighted the importance of a collaborative and supportive learning culture emphasising dialogue, receiving high quality feedback, and openness for successful progression. Purpose: This scoping literature review aimed to determine the definition of dignity in relation to disability. It also examined the extent to which inclusive research methods have been used to develop working definitions. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in five electronic databases, using a modified framework by Arksey and O'Malley. Narrative synthesis and qualitative content analysis were employed to examine definitions of dignity and the use of inclusive research methods. Results: 22 peer-reviewed studies were included. The majority of the studies were qualitative (72.72%) and examined various disability populations in diverse settings. Although 19 studies offered a definition of dignity, there was no clear consensus. Dignity was frequently defined from a utilitarian perspective, emphasising affordances and barriers. However, engagement with theoretical constructs was superficial and limited. Further, no studies mentioned the use of inclusive research methods. Conclusions: The absence of inclusive research methods hinders the development of a comprehensive definition of dignity that is accepted by and relevant to people with disability. Engaging with both theoretical and empirical perspectives of dignity is crucial to develop a meaningful and inclusive definition, which can inform interventions and policies that enhance dignity for people with disability across diverse settings and contexts. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: The adoption of inclusive research methods in disability research should be a priority for rehabilitation researchers and clinicians to better shape research agendas, study design, and outcomes. This study aims to explore the complex and multifaceted relationship between Behavioral Activation and Behavioral Maintenance in sports participation, delving into the underlying mechanisms to provide practical insights into how individuals initiate and sustain engagement in sports activities. Utilizing a combination of convenience sampling and snowball sampling methods, 378 sports participants from over ten provinces and cities in China were selected as survey subjects, and an intermediary model concerning the activation and maintenance of sports participation behavior was constructed. Discriminant validity and mediation effect analyses were conducted using SPSS and AMOS 23.0. The results indicate that Behavioral Activation indirectly influences Behavioral Maintenance through Competence (ad = 0.39), with a 95% confidence interval [0.201, 0.642], excluding 0. Behavioral Activation also indirectly influences Behavioral Maintenance through Autonomy (be = 0.23), with a 95% confidence interval [0.109, 0.421], excluding 0. However, Behavioral Activation indirectly influences Behavioral Maintenance through Relatedness (cf. = 0.09), with a 95% confidence interval [-0.068, 0.336], which includes 0. The study reveals that both Competence and Autonomy significantly mediate the activation and maintenance of sports participation behavior among athletes. AbstractHistorically, sex workers’ voices and perspectives have been left out of the scholarship related to sex work, which has resulted in victimization and pathologizing narratives around sex work. This qualitative study sought to help address this perspective gap in the literature by talking with sex workers about what they want helping professionals to know about sex work. Data were analyzed from interviews in September and October 2023 with 29 sex workers across the United States. Participants were recruited via a popular sex work listserv through which participants self-selected into the study which limited the perspectives included in our findings. The findings revealed that sex workers want helping professionals to know that sex work is diverse, that sex work is work, and that sex workers demand dignity and respect. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the helping professional to educate themselves on how to provide ethical and informed care and create an environment where sex workers feel safe and respected. Future research should aim to identify gaps in services and address loopholes that cause harm to the sex work community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vaccine hesitancy is widespread, and developing effective communication strategies that encourage hesitant individuals to choose vaccination is essential. This pre‐registered research aimed to examine associations among moral obligation, autonomous motivation, vaccination intentions and reactance, and to test messages highlighting moral obligation and autonomy support. In Study 1, participants who had not received a Covid‐19 vaccine (N = 1036) completed measures of autonomous motivation, moral obligation, reactance, intentions to vaccinate and vaccine hesitancy. Autonomous motivation and moral obligation emerged as strong independent predictors of lower reactance, lower hesitancy and greater vaccination intentions. In Study 2 (N = 429), the participants received a vaccination‐promoting message that highlighted moral obligation versus personal protection and used autonomy supportive versus controlling language. Messages with autonomy‐supportive language and highlighting personal protection elicited lower reactance and greater perceived legitimacy compared to messages with controlling language and highlighting moral obligation. All messages elicited greater reactance and lower perceived legitimacy compared to an information‐only message, and there were no effects of message type on vaccination intentions or vaccine hesitancy. The research has implications for the design of communications encouraging vaccination in hesitant individuals and suggests caution should be taken when developing messages to encourage vaccination in hesitant individuals. From an attachment-theoretical perspective, one would expect insecure attachment styles to have a negative impact on leader–follower relationships. However, a recent review of the literature on attachment style and leader–member exchange (LMX) yielded mixed results. Examining this discrepancy, we applied the principle of attachment-system activation, proposing that when insecurely attached leaders or followers experience more distress at work, attachment style will be a stronger predictor of LMX. Data were gathered from 192 independent leader–follower dyads and analyzed using the actor–partner interdependence model. Like in other studies, investigating the direct link between attachment style and LMX yielded mixed results. However, the link between anxious style and LMX did get stronger when including attachment-system activation in our model, highlighting the relevance of applying key principles from the original theory when studying leadership through the lens of attachment. The importance of commercial products increased in schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly as leaders grappled with school closures. Pre-COVID principals viewed their schools as mainly procuring commercial services for administrative support and teacher professional development. After school closures, principals came to emphasise commercialisation as technological infrastructure, online learning platforms, video conferencing software and/or digital tools for community engagement. This shift was borne out of necessity as principals found themselves having to make 'snap decisions' as to the products that could best support their school communities. This is a specific form of 'triaging' as the pandemic required leaders with pedagogical and curricular expertise to make technical decisions. In systems where increasing autonomy has been offset by decreasing central support, the concern is that issues of access and utility of commercial products can be pernicious in rewarding the privileged and effectively punishing the least advantaged within public systems. Conventionalization of organic farming calls into question its sustainability. No consensus has been reached on the criteria allowing evaluation of this conventionalization. We propose a methodology based on autonomy – a major sustainability attribute from an agroecological perspective. It was applied to Mediterranean beef cattle and pig livestock systems in Spain and led to the differentiation of five models based on their degree of closeness to conventional systems. Semi-intensive white pig systems were the most conventional compared to the extensive dehesa pastureland systems. In most cases, conventionalization derived from the farms' socioeconomic and institutional context. It is essential to adapt and change public policies in order to improve livestock farm sustainability and to prevent the most vulnerable farmers from disappearing: they are the ones who generate the most valuable ecosystem services. The proposed methodology, based on environmental and socioeconomic indicators, is applicable to assess the conventionalization of other organic systems beyond the Mediterranean. Currently, in the United States, there is no legal obligation for medical professionals or civil courts to uphold patients' Advance Directives (ADs) regarding end-of-life care. The applicability and standing of ADs prepared by Alzheimer's patients is a persistent issue in bioethics. Those who argue against giving ADs full status take two main approaches: (1) appealing to beneficence on behalf of the Alzheimer's patient and (2) claiming that there is no longer any personal equivalence between the AD's creator and the subject of the AD. In this paper, I present profound arguments against both approaches. Firstly, I argue that the principle of beneficence cannot apply in the case of Alzheimer's patients, and, secondly, that the moral and legal authority of the AD need not depend on strict equivalence of personal identity. I conclude by arguing that valid ADs protect the dignity and autonomy of Alzheimer's patients and that, therefore, there are moral obligations to uphold ADs which should be reflected in public policy and legislation. The outbreak of Covid-19 holds important lessons for general understandings of specialised agencies and their interactions with the political executive in a context of high political salience and uncertainty of the knowledge upon which agencies can base its professional decisions and pursue its policy preferences vis-à-vis the political principal. This case study analyses the behaviour of the Danish Health Authority (DHA) during two critical series of events in 2020 and 2021. Based on unique document access and interviews with key actors, the article makes a triple contribution to the literature on agencies by showing that: (1) interactions within the governmental hierarchy are transactional rather than rule-bound; (2) agency impact in interactions with the political executive depends on the agency head's skill in forming a strategically neutral approach; (3) a strong agency reputation with key audiences is not sufficient for ensuring political influence or avoiding political interference. This article presents an initial analysis of the Prayer and Liturgy Directory, which was published by the Catholic Education Service of England and Wales in 2023. It is argued that this document has many positive features, and provides a helpful guidance document for those involved with planning liturgies in a Catholic school context. However, a closer analysis indicates that there are some problematic features with this document. This analysis of the Prayer and Liturgy Directory (2023) is set against a broader claim, which argues that it is very significant for RE and Catholic Education because of its relationship to two other documents that come to the fore in 2023. The ideal worker is represented as constantly available for work. However, an increasing number and variety of workers experience conflict between work and family demands. Research has identified numerous practices to manage this conflict with positive implications for non-work relationships, but the implications of these practices for work relationships remain unclear. How do efforts to manage role conflict affect workplace relationships? To examine this question, we draw on ethnographic data from 72 STEM workers across three organizations. We find that workers who experienced role conflict interpreted interactions in the workplace—often unpredictable in timing, frequency, and length—as a threat to fulfilling both their work and family roles on a daily basis. Thus, they controlled work interactions to make time for both work and non-work roles. However, interactional control limited their sense of workplace belonging and opportunities for resource exchange. In contrast, workers who did not experience daily role conflict encouraged interactions, allowing these encounters to expand across time. As a result, their work extended into evenings and weekends, and they experienced a sense of belonging and more regular resource exchange. We identify how interactional control practices manage role conflict but limit the development of workplace relationships. We also expand the repertoire of how devotion to work can be performed, identifying the occupied worker who expresses devotion through focused and efficient work and interactions rather than availability for work and interactions. The development of autonomous vessels and unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) has generated great interest in the scientific community due to their potential and advantages for use in various environments and applications. Several literature review papers have been produced from different perspectives, contributing to a better understanding of the topic and to the analysis of advances, challenges, and trends. We hypothesize that the greatest attention has been focused on the development of high-impact applications in the maritime sector. Additionally, we depart from the need to investigate the potential and advances of USVs in fluvial environments, which involve particular operating conditions, where there are different socio-environmental conditions and restrictions in terms of access to conventional energy sources and communication systems. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to study USVs in the particular context of small craft. The search for records was conducted in Scopus and Web of Science databases, covering studies published from 2000 to 16 May 2024. The methodology employed was based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, which is a widely recognized protocol that ensures quality and rigor in systematic reviews and bibliometric analyses. To optimize the data collection and selection process, the semaphore technique was additionally implemented, allowing for an efficient categorization of the studies found. This combined methodological approach facilitated a systematic and transparent evaluation of the literature. This study was developed based on three research questions about the evolution of research topics, areas of application, and types of algorithms related to USVs. The study of the evolution of works on USVs was carried out based on the results of the meta-analysis generated with the Bibliometrix tool. The study of applications and developments was carried out based on information obtained from the papers for six study categories: application environment, level of autonomy, application area, algorithm typology, methods, and electronic devices used. For each of the 387 papers identified in the databases, labeling was performed for the 359 screened papers with six study categories according to the availability of information in the title and abstract. In the categories application sector, autonomy level, application area and algorithm type/task, it was identified that most studies are oriented toward the maritime sector, the developments to achieve full autonomy for USVs, the development of designs or algorithms at the modeling and simulation level, and the development and implementation of algorithms for the GNC subsystems. Nevertheless, this research has revealed a much wider range of environments and applications beyond maritime, military, and commercial sectors. In addition, from the mapping of the types of algorithms used in the GNC architecture, the study provides information that can be used to guide the design of the subsystems that enable USV autonomy for civilian use in restricted environments. This study uses the process model of journalistic roles and discusses how journalists perceive (normatively and cognitively) and enact (according to their narrated practice) their professional roles upon interaction with socially distant vs. closer sources on the political beat. Specifically, the study looks at how journalists negotiate between their professional and social roles, and balance between autonomy and adaptation to the source when encountering sources with whom they are related by single (purely professional) vs. multiplex (social and professional) social ties. Empirically, the article compares journalist role conception (based on 26 qualitative interviews with journalists in Lithuania and Sweden) and performance (based on 475 reconstructed journalist–source interactions in both countries). The results show that the professional role is fluctuating and sensitive to the social relationship context. In both countries, journalists praised the norm of role autonomy from sources. However, in role performance, professional and social roles influenced each other during interactions with sources. Studies often suggest that the thrust of peasant politics is the advancement of autonomous family farming. Such studies seem remote in rural places where migration, pluriactivity, and non-agrarian jobs and aspirations are the norm. We examine peasant politics in rural Ecuador, where peasant communities have driven nationwide uprisings in recent years. We find that many peasant community organizations cultivate political legitimacy among their members by advancing diverse, non-agrarian objectives, rather than autonomous farming. We argue that researchers stand to learn much about peasant politics by attending to precisely how agrarian livelihoods and post-agrarian aspirations weave together to (re)produce rural institutions. When app users engaged in fitness activity in the real world, they earned tokens to buy land and other digital assets (NFTs) in Squadland, thereby improving the environment both inside the app and in the real world; Squadeasy bought land in the real world to mirror users' actions in the metaverse. In this way, users could contribute to positive social change and have a sustainable effect on the world. This case discusses users' motivations to engage in this metaverse, through the lens of Self Determination Theory. First, rather than fun and rewards, identified regulation is the relevant motivation to trigger commitment to the metaverse as it related to personal values and self-identity. Second, three external situational factors (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) positively increase commitment and will help users stay with the app. The metaverse fits well with these three external situational factors and can help achieve actual sustainable change. Self-determination theory links frustrated needs to defensiveness, whereas satisfied needs to openness in interpersonal relations. Past work on intergroup relations and social identity differentiates between defensive (i.e. collective narcissism) and secure forms of ingroup identities. Here, we investigated how frustrated versus satisfied basic psychological needs (i.e. autonomy, competence, and relatedness) are associated with collective narcissism versus secure ingroup identity in a national context. In a two-wave longitudinal study (N = 297), frustrated competence predicted higher collective narcissism over time. Frustrated relatedness negatively predicted Time 2 collective narcissism. However, Time 2 secure ingroup identity was positively predicted by satisfied autonomy and negatively by frustrated competence. Dyadic social interactions evoke complex dynamics between two agents that, while exchanging unequal levels of body autonomy and motor control, may find a fine balance to synergize, take turns, and gradually build social rapport. To study the evolution of such complex interactions, we currently rely exclusively on subjective pencil and paper means. Here, we complement this approach with objective biometrics of socio-motor behaviors conducive to socio-motor agency. Using a common clinical test as the backdrop of our study to probe social interactions between a child and a clinician, we demonstrate new ways to streamline the detection of social readiness potential in both typically developing and autistic children by uncovering a handful of tasks that enable quantification of levels of motor autonomy and levels of motor control. Using these biometrics of autonomy and control, we further highlight differences between males and females and uncover a new data type amenable to generalizing our results to any social setting. The new methods convert continuous dyadic bodily biorhythmic activity into spike trains and demonstrate that in the context of dyadic behavioral analyses, they are well characterized by a continuous Gamma process that can classify individual levels of our thus defined socio-motor agency during a dyadic exchange. Finally, we apply signal detection processing tools in a machine learning approach to show the validity of the streamlined version of the digitized ADOS test. We offer a new framework that combines stochastic analyses, nonlinear dynamics, and information theory to streamline and facilitate scaling the screening and tracking of social interactions with applications to autism. There has been a surge in employing artificial intelligence (AI) in all areas of language pedagogy, not the least among them language testing and assessment. This study investigated the effects of AI-powered tools on English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners' speaking skills, psychological well-being, autonomy, and academic buoyancy. Using a concurrent mixed-methods design, the study included 28 upper-intermediate EFL students from an Ethiopian university. We gave the Michigan Language Proficiency Test to evaluate degrees of proficiency before the TOEFL iBT speaking section, which used ChatGPT for scoring and feedback. Speaking abilities were assessed using pretests, immediate posttests, and delayed posttests. Furthermore, we evaluated the impacts on psychological well-being, autonomy, and academic buoyancy using narrative frames. We used one-way repeated measurements to examine the quantitative data and thematically evaluated the qualitative data. According to the results, speaking abilities, psychological well-being, learner autonomy, and academic buoyancy showed notable increases. The results suggest that by improving skill development, offering individualized feedback, and meeting students' emotional and psychological needs, AI systems like ChatGPT have the capacity to transform language assessment and pedagogy. Encouraging the incorporation of AI technologies to enhance educational outcomes and provide a more flexible and adaptable learning environment, the study presents important implications for various stakeholders. This study explores the development process of psychological needs in online gamified learning (OGL) among university students and examines its impact on learning engagement. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT), the research conducted a purposive sampling survey involving 483 university students with diversified academic backgrounds. Results from Mplus-based analysis show: Perceived autonomy correlates positively with perceived relatedness and perceived competence; Autonomy-Supportive Motivation is positively linked to the three basic psychological needs; Perceived autonomy, perceived relatedness, and perceived competence are positively associated with intrinsic motivation; Intrinsic motivation further correlates positively with learning engagement; and intrinsic motivation, along with the basic psychological needs, mediates the relationship between autonomy-supportive motivation and learning engagement in college students within a OGL environment. Additionally, the study found that external orientation negatively moderated the link between autonomy-supportive motivation and perceived autonomy in college students. The main value of this study is that it reveals the logical relationships within students’ psychological needs in the context of OGL, validating the development process of students’ psychological needs and its impact on learning engagement, emphasizing the crucial two-way interaction between teachers and students, and creating an indirect impetus driven by external contexts, causal factors, and behavioral structures. To be human is to be autonomous, yet this is a trait that most of us lack. We are subject to forces external to our being. We are workers; we are citizens; we are needful creatures. Humanity-proper in these times of neoliberal omnipotence is defined differently. The key terms are familiar: personal betterment, personal responsibility, productivity, pleasantness. A forked tongue slithers in our conscience, tells us that these are the traits of the human condition. Through Bataille, this paper argues the substrate of these oft repeated familiar mantras are other. Neoliberal subjects, propelled by need, understand themselves along the axis of the useful choice. The paper turns to myth to understand the interdependence of need and choice, and how this interdependence posits being as always in desire but never in pleasure. Revisiting Don Giovanni, a character central to Acéphalic thought, and the commentary of Søren Kierkegaard, we think in terms of non-abstraction, of pleasurably floating in change, rather than toiling in desire. (1) Background: Public transport has a vital role to play in creating sustainable, accessible societies. Accessible and inclusive, door-to-door public transport systems with low barriers to use benefit everyone, increasing the mobility of citizens and improving independence. As the industry strives towards multi-modal and Mobility as a Service (MaaS) concepts, there is a need to delve deep into the needs and perceptions of transport user's door-to-door journeys to find ways to improve. Accordingly, in order to increase the sustainability of MaaS, improving accessibility and understanding service user perceptions are of utmost importance. However, there is a scarcity of research within national transport services to determine unmet user needs to increase the accessibility and autonomy of door-to-door journeys. This research aims to investigate if it is possible to improve the door-to-door journey experience for public transport travellers, increasing the accessibility and the perception of autonomy via technology, and by doing so, providing a more sustainable alternative to road transport. It focuses on understanding service users of Ireland's National Rail service, Irish Rail, to create key improvements in interactive systems. (2) Methods: The study applies a user-centred mixed-methods methodology using surveys (N = 316) and co-design workshops (four workshops N = 15). The research collected deep insights into the mindsets and needs of service users, showing the potential to improve this door-to-the-door customer journey. Key improvements for interactive systems were outlined. Experience maps were designed, leading to a Conceptual Design for a travel assistant to aid the service user throughout the door-to-door journey. (3) Results: Travellers' autonomy and the sense of freedom they experience can be improved, mainly if their needs across the complete door-to-door customer journey are supported. Highlighted areas for action include information, accessibility, personal security, ticketing, comfort, facilities, and anxiety. (4) Conclusions: This research reiterates the need for national transport and MaaS providers to prioritise service users' perspectives when developing sustainable services. Background: Modification of the learning environment enhances academic performance, and meta-motivational skills. Yet it is largely unknown which underlying cause potentiates these effects. The study's goal is to analyse flipped classroom (FC) effect on basic psychological needs and self-esteem. Methods: 40 undergraduate medical students participated in a one-site two phased study. In Phase I, students attended a traditional lecture-based classroom (TC). In Phase II, the same group attended FC. Upon completion of each Phase students completed two questionnaires: Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale, and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Results: Autonomy satisfaction was significantly higher in FC (n = 40, z = 5.520, p <.001), the same tendency was seen for Competence satisfaction in FC (n = 40, z = 5.122, p <.001). As for the frustration of all three needs, the statistical difference was observed for all three subscales between TC and FC. In FC, autonomy (n = 40, z = − 5.370, p <.001), relatedness (n = 40, z = 4.187, p <.001), and competence (n = 40, z = − 5.323, p <.001) frustration was significantly lower. Self-esteem was significantly higher in FC (n = 40, z = 5.528, p <.001). In TC self-esteem negatively correlated with autonomy frustration, (r(38) = − 0.430, p <.01), and competence frustration, (r(38) = − 0.379, p <.05). In FC, self-esteem positively correlated with autonomy satisfaction (r(38) = 0.316, p <.05), and competence satisfaction (r(38) = 0.429, p <.01). Conclusions: FC better fulfils students' basic psychological needs, specifically needs for autonomy and competence, and self-esteem compared to TC. Collaborative work, and academic scaffolding, contributes to behavioural engagement of students in the learning process. FC with the main focus on students' active involvement may better meet millennials' needs. Implementing validated questionnaires to measure students' psychological needs should become a regular practice in medical schools, specifically during the process of curriculum redesign. Notable efforts have been made to apply the institutionalisation concept to legislatures, parties and party systems. In contrast, parliamentary party groups (PPGs) were either side-lined or bundled under the concept of institutionalised parliaments and parties, which implies some conceptual confusion. However, PPGs should be treated as distinct topic given their role in stabilising the parliamentary business in all modern assemblies. Encouraging research to close that gap, we introduce a framework to study the institutionalisation of PPGs for which we use illustrations from various polities. We suggest that highly institutionalised groups exhibit stable personnel, coherent legislative behaviour, structural differentiation, well-established procedural routines, and autonomy in terms of policy decision-making, leadership selection, and resources. Also, we examine PPGs as embedded institutions and provide a conceptual map for varying relationships with the institutionalisation of parliaments and parties. In the modern educational landscape, teacher creativity has a vital role, especially in language education. Teacher creativity plays a crucial role in today's world, and some studies have explored the factors influencing creativity among language teachers. The present research explored the impact of psychological factors, self‐efficacy, collective efficacy, and autonomy on the professional creativity of Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. These interconnected concepts provide a holistic perspective on motivation and performance, impacting both individuals and groups. In a study involving 542 English teachers from diverse backgrounds (varying in gender, age, and teaching experience) within Chinese educational settings, researchers administered four distinct scales: teacher creativity, self‐efficacy, collective efficacy, and autonomy. The responses were then analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The analysis revealed a significant relationship between Chinese EFL teachers’ self‐efficacy, collective efficacy, and autonomy, and their creativity. Specifically, regression analysis indicated that higher levels of self‐efficacy and collective efficacy were statistically associated with better creativity among teachers (p < 0.05). The model further showed that 52% of the differences in teachers’ professional creativity can be described by their self‐efficacy, while approximately 37% of the variance is attributed to collective efficacy. Additionally, autonomy accounts for approximately 61% of the variance in teachers’ professional creativity. The results from the SEM analysis corroborate the existing literature, affirming that self‐efficacy, collective efficacy, and autonomy significantly influence professional creativity among Chinese EFL teachers. These psychological factors play a crucial role in enhancing individual teacher creativity. Educational administrators can leverage these insights to design focused professional development programs that strengthen teachers’ self‐efficacy and collective efficacy. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly made advances across various fields, including ELT. In this article we embrace an egalitarian dialogue framework to explore and understand the role of AI in language education. This format provides a useful backdrop for navigating the dual responses—enthusiasm and scepticism—by which AI's influence in education has often been characterized. We critically assess both the advantages and limitations of AI in ELT, highlighting and praising how AI-powered tools can assist educators in differentiating instruction, promoting learner autonomy, and creating personalized and inclusive learning environments, thus making education more accessible to students with diverse and individual needs. However, the article also addresses the challenges posed by the digital divide, particularly the inequities in access to (AI) technologies in low-socioeconomic-status regions. We also reflect upon how AI can become an obstacle in developing learner autonomy due to the risks associated with overdependence on such technologies and the lack of critical skills. The article concludes that although AI presents exciting opportunities for advancing and facilitating language learning, its integration must be approached with a rational mindset to ensure that it serves to bridge educational gaps rather than intensify them. Introduction: Informed Consent (IC) is a decision-making process wherein patients are provided with all necessary information regarding treatment to make an uncoerced, educated choice. There are gaps in the implementation of the IC process that need to be identified and addressed. Aim: To estimate the proportion of patients/surrogates who read, understood, and signed the IC form before undergoing surgical procedures; to identify the different healthcare team members involved in explaining the IC form; to evaluate the extent to which different components of the IC form were explained to patients/surrogates; and to determine the influence of the IC form on surgical decision-making, and the overall satisfaction with the IC process. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in the Dakshina Kannada District of Southern India from April 2020 to March 2021. It included 100 adult patients admitted to the postsurgical wards of general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, otorhinolaryngology, and ophthalmology. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Institutional Ethics Committee. The parameters studied included socio-demographic variables, administration of the IC form, details on the person explaining the IC form along with its content, and the influence of the IC form on decisionmaking, as well as overall satisfaction with the IC process. Data were collected using a predesigned questionnaire and analysed using descriptive statistics in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27.0. Categorical variables were presented as frequencies and proportions, whereas continuous variables were presented as means and standard deviations. Results: All participants received the IC form; however, only 21% read, understood, and signed it. The explanation of the IC form was given to 59% of the patients, with only 15% of these explanations provided by the treating surgeon. The components of the IC form, such as the surgical procedure and its benefits, were explained to the majority of the patients; however, the risks of the surgical procedure and alternative options were explained to only 53% and 7% of patients, respectively. The IC form had a minor influence on surgical decision-making for 61% of patients, and 43% expressed satisfaction with the IC process. Conclusion: The study revealed that the implementation of IC was inadequate. Surgeons should provide and explain the IC form well in advance, allowing time for patients to read, understand, and clarify their doubts.
