At DESY in Hamburg, three non-accelerator-based experiments will search for FIPs as dark matter candidates (ALPS II, BabyIAXO) or constituting the dark matter in our home galaxy (MADMAX).

Abstract: We report on a blinded analysis of low-energy electronic-recoil data from the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. Novel subsystems and the increased 5.9 tonne liquid xenon target reduced the background in the (1, 30) keV search region to $(15.8 \pm 1.3)$ events/(tonne$\times$year$\times$keV), the lowest ever achieved in a dark matter detector and $\sim$5 times lower than in XENON1T. With an exposure of 1.16 tonne-years, we observe no excess above background and set stringent new limits on solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/$c^2$ masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12306 $\pm$ 184) kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section $\bar{\sigma}_e$, the axioelectric coupling constant $g_{Ae}$, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter $\kappa$. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle $\left|U_{e4}\right|^2$ for keV sterile neutrinos., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Journal of high energy physics 01(1), 169 (2023). doi:10.1007/JHEP01(2023)169, We study the impact of sphaleron-induced thermal friction on the axion dark-matter abundance due to the interaction of an axion-like particle (ALP) with a dark non-abelian gauge sector in a secluded thermal bath. Thermal friction can either enhance the axion relic density by delaying the onset of oscillations or suppress it by damping them. We derive an analytical formula for the $frictional$ $adiabatic$ $invariant$, which remains constant along the axion evolution and which allows us to compute the axion relic density in a general set-up. Even in the most minimal scenario, in which a single gauge group is responsible for both the generation of the ALP mass and the friction force, we find that the resulting dark-matter abundance from the misalignment mechanism deviates from the standard scenario for axion masses $m_a\gtrsim 100 \; {\rm eV}$. We also generalize our analysis to the case where the gauge field that induces friction and the gauge sector responsible for the ALP mass are distinct and their couplings to the axion have a large hierarchy as can be justified by means of alignment or clockwork scenarios. We find that it is easy to open up the ALP parameter space where the resulting axion abundance matches the observed dark-matter relic density both in the traditionally over- and underabundant regimes. Abstract: 20th Lomonosov Conference on Elementary Particle Physics, Lomonosov, Moscow, Russia, 19 Aug 2021 - 25 Aug 2021; Moscow University physics bulletin 77(2), 120 - 125 (2022). doi:10.3103/S002713492202045X, The Any Light Particle Search (ALPS II) is a light shining through a wall (LSW) experiment searching for axion-like elementary particles in the sub-eV mass range, which are motivated by astrophysics and cosmology and fulfill the requirements for being dark matter. ALPS II aims to measure an axion-to-photon coupling of $2\times 10^{-11}\textrm{ GeV}^{-1}$, which is several orders of magnitude better than that of previous LSW experiments and will thus investigate a new parameter range. The increased performance is achieved by enhancing the magnetic field interaction length to $2\times 10^{6}$ m and by amplifying the signal in an optical cavity on each side of a light-tight barrier. The expected signal is in the order of 1 photon per day, which will be measured by photon detectors with very low dark count rates of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-6}\textrm{ Hz})$. Abstract: In this note we report on the development plans and first results of the Grenoble Axion Haloscope (GrAHal) project. It is aimed at developing a haloscope platform dedicated to the search for axion dark matter particles. We discuss its general framework and the plans to reach the sensitivity required to probe well known invisible axion models, over particularly relevant axion masses and coupling regions. We also present our first haloscope prototype and the result of its test run at liquid He temperature, setting a new exclusion limit $g_{a \gamma \gamma} \leq 2.2 \times 10^{-13}~ \text{GeV}^{-1}$ ($g_{a \gamma \gamma} \leq 22 \times g_{\text{KSVZ}}$) around 6.375 GHz ($m_a \simeq 26.37$ $\mu \text{eV}$)., Comment: 5 pages

Abstract: This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to $g_{a\gamma} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, and masses up to $m_a\sim 0.25$ eV. Abstract: Journal of high energy physics 05(5), 001 (2021). doi:10.1007/JHEP05(2021)001, We point out an enhancement of the pair production rate of charged fermions in a strong electric field in the presence of time dependent classical axion-like background field, which we call axion assisted Schwinger effect. While the standard Schwinger production rate is proportional to $\exp(-\pi(m^2+p_T^2 )/E)$, with $m$ and $p_T$ denoting the fermion mass and its momentum transverse to the electric field $E$, the axion assisted Schwinger effect can be enhanced at large momenta to $\exp(-\pi m^2/E)$. The origin of this enhancement is a coupling between the fermion spin and its momentum, induced by the axion velocity. As a non-trivial validation of our result, we show its invariance under field redefinitions associated with a chiral rotation and successfully reproduce the chiral anomaly equation in the presence of helical electric and magnetic fields. Abstract: We give a detailed treatment of electromagnetic signals generated by gravitational waves (GWs) in resonant cavity experiments. Our investigation corrects and builds upon previous studies by carefully accounting for the gauge dependence of relevant quantities. We work in a preferred frame for the laboratory, the proper detector frame, and show how to resum short-wavelength effects to provide analytic results that are exact for GWs of arbitrary wavelength. This formalism allows us to firmly establish that, contrary to previous claims, cavity experiments designed for the detection of axion dark matter only need to reanalyze existing data to search for high-frequency GWs with strains as small as $h\sim 10^{-22}-10^{-21}$. We also argue that directional detection is possible in principle using readout of multiple cavity modes. For ideal systems with perfectly flat, parallel and isotropic dielectric disks of finite diameter, we find that a geometrical form factor reduces the emitted power by up to $30\,\%$ compared to earlier 1D calculations. We derive the emitted beam shape, which is important for antenna design. We show that realistic dark matter axion velocities of $10^{-3} c$ and inhomogeneities of the external magnetic field at the scale of $10\,\%$ have negligible impact on the sensitivity of MADMAX. We investigate design requirements for which the emitted power changes by less than $20\,\%$ for a benchmark boost factor with a bandwidth of $50\,{\rm MHz}$ at $22\,{\rm GHz}$, corresponding to an axion mass of $90\,\mu{\rm eV}$. We find that the maximum allowed disk tilt is $100\,\mu{\rm m}$ divided by the disk diameter, the required disk planarity is $20\,\mu{\rm m}$ (min-to-max) or better, and the maximum allowed surface roughness is $100\,\mu{\rm m}$ (min-to-max). 11. Revealing the Primordial Irreducible Inflationary Gravitational-Wave Background with a Spinning Peccei-Quinn Axion

Abstract: The primordial irreducible gravitational-wave background due to quantum vacuum tensor fluctuations produced during inflation spans a large range of frequencies with an almost scale-invariant spectrum but is too low to be detected by the next generation of gravitational-wave interferometers. We show how this signal is enhanced by a short temporary kination era in the cosmological history (less than 10 e-folds), that can arise at any energy scale between a GeV and the inflationary scale $10^{16}$ GeV.We argue that such kination era is naturally generated by a spinning axion before it gets trapped by its potential.It is usually assumed that the axion starts oscillating around its minimum from its initial frozen position at rest.However, the early dynamics of the Peccei-Quinn field can induce a large kinetic energy in the axion field, triggering a kination era, either before or after the axion acquires its mass, leading to a characteristic peak in the primordial gravitational-wave background. This represents a smoking-gun signature of axion physics as no other scalar field dynamics can trigger such a sequence of equations of state in the early universe.We derive the resulting gravitational-wave spectrum, and present the parameter space that leads to such signal as well as the detectability prospects, in particular at LISA, Einstein Telescope, Cosmic Explorer and Big Bang Observer.We show both model-independent predictions and present as well results for two specific well-motivated UV completions for the QCD axion dark matter where this dynamics is built-in.

Abstract: International audience; In this report we present the status of the MAgnetized Disk and Mirror Axion eXperiment (MADMAX), the first dielectric haloscope for the direct search of dark matter axions in the mass range of 40 to 400 $\mu$eV. MADMAX will consist of several parallel dielectric disks, which are placed in a strong magnetic field and with adjustable separations. This setting is expected to allow for an observable emission of axion induced electromagnetic waves at a frequency between 10 and 100 GHz corresponding to the axion mass. The present document orignated from a status report to the DESY PRC in 2019.

Abstract: Axion dark matter can resonantly convert into photons in the magnetospheres of neutron stars (NSs). It has recently been shown that radio observations of nearby NSs can therefore provide a highly sensitive probe of the axion parameter space. Here we extend existing calculations by performing the first three-dimensional computation of the photon flux, taking into account the isotropic phase-space distribution of axions and the structure of the NS magnetosphere. In particular, we study the overall magnitude of the flux and its possible time variation. We find that overall signal strength is robust to our more realistic analysis. In addition, we find that the variance of the signal with respect to the NS rotation is washed out by the additional trajectories in our treatment. Nevertheless, we show that SKA observations towards J0806.4-4123 are sensitive to $g_{a\gamma\gamma}\sim 3\times10^{-13}\mathrm{\,GeV^{-1}}$ at $m_a\sim 7\times10^{-6}\mathrm{\,eV}$, even when accounting for Doppler broadening. Finally, we provide the necessary code to calculate the photon flux for any given NS system.

Abstract: We study the proton lifetime in the $SO(10)$ Grand Unified Theory (GUT), which has the left-right (LR) symmetric gauge theory below the GUT scale. In particular, we focus on the minimal model without the bi-doublet Higgs field in the LR symmetric model, which predicts the LR-breaking scale at around $10^{10\text{--}12}$ GeV. The Wilson coefficients of the proton decay operators turn out to be considerably larger than those in the minimal $SU(5)$ GUT model especially when the Standard Model Yukawa interactions are generated by integrating out extra vector-like multiplets. As a result, we find that the proton lifetime can be within the reach of the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment even when the GUT gauge boson mass is in the $10^{16\text{--}17}$ GeV range. We also show that the mass of the extra vector-like multiplets can be generated by the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking in a consistent way with the axion dark matter scenario., 20 pages, 3 figures (v1); Minor revision, references added (v2)

Abstract: Hidden photons are dark matter candidates motivated by theories beyond the standard model of particle physics. They mix with conventional photons, and they can be detected through the very weak electromagnetic radiation they induce at the interface between a metal and the air. SHUKET (SearcH for U(1) darK matter with an Electromagnetic Telescope) is a dedicated experiment sensitive to the hidden photon-induced signal. The results from a hidden photon search campaign are reported, with no significant detection of a dark matter signal. Exclusion limits are derived from the observed noise fluctuations in a 5 GHz to 6.8 GHz frequency range, corresponding to a hidden photon mass region ranging from 20.8 micro-eV to 28.3 micro-eV. Abstract: We propose an approach to search for axion dark matter with a specially designed superconducting radio frequency cavity, targeting axions with masses $m_a \lesssim 10^{-6} \text{ eV}$. Our approach exploits axion-induced transitions between nearly degenerate resonant modes of frequency $\sim$ GHz. A scan over axion mass is achieved by varying the frequency splitting between the two modes. Compared to traditional approaches, this allows for parametrically enhanced signal power for axions lighter than a GHz. The projected sensitivity covers unexplored parameter space for QCD axion dark matter for $10^{-8} \text{ eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim10^{-6} \text{ eV}$ and axion-like particle dark matter as light as $m_a \sim 10^{-14} \text{ eV}$., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: If the symmetry breaking responsible for axion dark matter production occurs during the radiation-dominated epoch in the early Universe, then this produces large amplitude perturbations that collapse into dense objects known as axion miniclusters. The characteristic minicluster mass, $M_0$, is set by the mass inside the horizon when axion oscillations begin. For the QCD axion $M_0\sim 10^{-10}M_\odot$, however for an axion-like particle $M_0$ can approach $M_\odot$ or higher. Using the Press-Schechter formalism we compute the mass function of halos formed by hierarchical structure formation from these seeds. We compute the concentrations and collapse times of these halos and show that they can grow to be as massive as $10^6M_0$. Within the halos, miniclusters likely remain tightly bound, and we compute their gravitational microlensing signal taking the fraction of axion dark matter collapsed into miniclusters, $f_{\rm MC}$, as a free parameter. A large value of $f_{\rm MC}$ severely weakens constraints on axion scenarios from direct detection experiments. We take into account the non-Gaussian distribution of sizes of miniclusters and determine how this effects the number of microlensing events. We develop the tools to consider microlensing by an extended mass function of non-point-like objects, and use microlensing data to place the first observational constraints on $f_{\rm MC}$. All existing experimental efforts to detect QCD axions focus on a range of axion masses below ∼25 μeV. The MADMAX project is designed to be sensitive for axions with masses (40–400) μeV. The experimental design is based on the idea of enhanced axion-photon conversion in a system with several layers with alternating dielectric constants. Abstract: We report on a search for ultralow-mass axionlike dark matter by analyzing the ratio of the spinprecession frequencies of stored ultracold neutrons and 199Hg atoms for an axion-induced oscillating electric dipole moment of the neutron and an axion-wind spin-precession effect. No signal consistent with dark matter is observed for the axion mass range 10−24 ≤ ma ≤ 10−17 eV. Our null result sets the first laboratory constraints on the coupling of axion dark matter to gluons, which improve on astrophysical limits by up to 3 orders of magnitude, and also improves on previous laboratory constraints on the axion coupling to nucleons by up to a factor of 40. ispartof: Physical Review X vol:7 issue:4 status: published

Abstract: Using the well-known low-energy effective Lagrangian of QCD --valid for small (non-vanishing) quark masses and a large number of colors-- we study in detail the regions of parameter space where $CP$ is spontaneously broken/unbroken for a vacuum angle $\theta= \pi$. In the $CP$-broken region there are first order phase transitions as one crosses $\theta=\pi$, while on the (hyper)surface separating the two regions, there are second order phase transitions signaled by the vanishing of the mass of a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson and by a divergent QCD topological susceptibility. The second order point sits at the end of a first order line associated with the $CP$ spontaneous breaking, in the appropriate complex parameter plane. When the effective Lagrangian is extended by the inclusion of an axion these features of QCD imply that standard calculations of the axion potential have to be revised when the QCD parameters fall in the above mentioned $CP$-broken region, in spite of the fact that the axion solves the strong-$CP$ problem. Abstract: We revisit the generation of dark matter isocurvature perturbations in the curvaton model in greater detail, both analytically and numerically. As concrete examples, we investigate the cases of thermally decoupled dark matter and axionic dark matter. We show that the radiation produced by the decay of the curvaton, which has not been taken into account in previous analytical studies, can significantly affect the amplitude of isocurvature perturbations. In particular, we find that they are drastically suppressed even when the dark matter freeze-out (or the onset of the axion oscillations for axionic dark matter) occurs before the curvaton decays, provided the freeze-out takes place deep in the curvaton-dominated Universe. As a consequence, we show that the current observational isocurvature constraints on the curvaton parameters are not as severe as usually thought., Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We use state-of-art measurements of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) at z=6, 7 and 8 to derive constraints on warm dark matter (WDM), late-forming dark matter (LFDM) and ultra-light axion dark matter (ULADM) models alternative to the cold dark matter (CDM) paradigm. To this purpose we have run a suite of high-resolution N-body simulations to accurately characterise the low mass-end of the halo mass function and derive DM model predictions of the high-z luminosity function. In order to convert halo masses into UV-magnitudes we introduce an empirical approach based on halo abundance matching which allows us to model the LF in terms of the amplitude and scatter of the ensemble average star formation rate halo mass relation of each DM model, $\langle {\rm SFR}({\rm M_{ h}},z)\rangle$. We find that independent of the DM scenario the average SFR at fixed halo mass increases from z=6 to 8, while the scatter remains constant. At halo mass ${\rm M_{h}}\gtrsim 10^{12}\,{\rm M}_\odot$ h$^{-1}$ the average SFR as function of halo mass follows a double power law trend that is common to all models, while differences occur at smaller masses. In particular, we find that models with a suppressed low-mass halo abundance exhibit higher SFR compared to the CDM results. Using deviance statistics we obtain a lower limit on the WDM thermal relic particle mass, $m_{\rm WDM}\gtrsim 1.5$ keV at $2\sigma$. In the case of LFDM models, the phase transition redshift parameter is bounded to $z_t\gtrsim 8\cdot 10^5$ at $2\sigma$. We find ULADM best-fit models with axion mass $m_a\gtrsim 1.6\cdot 10^{-22}$ eV to be well within $2\sigma$ of the deviance statistics. We remark that measurements at $z=6$ slightly favour a flattening of the LF at faint UV-magnitudes. This tends to prefer some of the non-CDM models in our simulation suite, although not at a statistically significant level to distinguish them from CDM., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures; added separate analysis using LF data at z=6 from Livermore et al. Abstract: As part of the T-REX project, a number of R&D and prototyping activities have been carried out during the last years to explore the applicability of Micromegas-read gaseous TPCs in rare event searches like double beta decay (DBD), axion research and low-mass WIMP searches. While in the companion paper we focus on DBD, in this paper we focus on the results regarding the search for dark matter candidates, both axions and WIMPs. Small ultra-low background Micromegas detectors are used to image the x-ray signal expected in axion helioscopes like CAST at CERN. Background levels as low as $0.8\times 10^{-6}$ c keV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ have already been achieved in CAST while values down to $\sim10^{-7}$ c keV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ have been obtained in a test bench placed underground in the Laboratorio Subterr��neo de Canfranc. Prospects to consolidate and further reduce these values down to $\sim10^{-8}$ c keV$^{-1}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$will be described. Such detectors, placed at the focal point of x-ray telescopes in the future IAXO experiment, would allow for 10$^5$ better signal-to-noise ratio than CAST, and search for solar axions with $g_{a��}$ down to few 10$^{12}$ GeV$^{-1}$, well into unexplored axion parameter space. In addition, a scaled-up version of these TPCs, properly shielded and placed underground, can be competitive in the search for low-mass WIMPs. The TREX-DM prototype, with $\sim$0.300 kg of Ar at 10 bar, or alternatively $\sim$0.160 kg of Ne at 10 bar, and energy threshold well below 1 keV, has been built to test this concept. We will describe the main technical solutions developed, as well as the results from the commissioning phase on surface. Abstract: Journal of high energy physics 05(5), 137 (2021). doi:10.1007/JHEP05(2021)137, This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to g$_{a��}$ �� 1.5 �� 10$^{��11}$ GeV$^{��1}$, and masses up to m$_{a}$ �� 0.25 eV.
