We present initial rock magnetic results for both lava flows and lapilli produced by the 2021 eruption of the Cumbre Vieja, La Palma (Canary Islands). Samples were taken during the eruption to minimize early alteration and weathering of the rocks and tephra. Standard procedures included progressive alternating field and thermal demagnetization, hysteresis curves, thermomagnetic experiments, progressive acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), and First-Order Reversal Curves (FORCs). Overall, our observations, including low to medium unblocking temperatures, isothermal remanent magnetization to 1 Tesla, and the abundance of wasp-waist hysteresis loops, strongly suggest the presence of Ti-rich titanomagnetites as the main remanence carriers in both lava flows and lapilli, in addition to some hematite as well. Whereas the former has been directly seen (SEM), hematite is elusive with nonmagnetic-based methods. The lava tubes at Undara became internationally recognised in the late 1980s, when 24 species of terrestrial cave-adapted invertebrates (troglobionts) were recorded from Bayliss Cave, making it one of the 20 richest known cave communities in the world at the time. Over the last decades, several of the Undara species have been taxonomically described and a great deal of research has been undertaken in other parts of Australia, which has revealed additional subterranean hotspots. It is therefore timely to update the list of Undara cave fauna, and to evaluate the Undara cave system in relation to other subterranean hotspots in Australia. The updated species list was compiled from the published literature and museum databases. Minimally, 78 species of arthropods have been recorded from 17 lava tube caves in the Undara Basalt. Sixteen species have been taxonomically described; 30 identified to genus and/or morpho-species; and 32 remain unidentified to species or genus level. Thirty troglobionts and one stygobiont species were recorded. Seven caves harboured obligate subterranean species; Bayliss Cave harboured the most obligate subterranean species: 23 troglobionts and one stygobiont. All these caves contained deep zone environments with high humidity, of which three also contained ‘bad air’ (CO2). The unique combination of geomorphic structure and environmental parameters (high humidity) and multiple energy sources (tree roots, bats and guano, organic material wash-in) are the main factors responsible for Bayliss Cave’s extraordinary local richness. Further research is needed to investigate CO2 as a factor influencing troglobiont richness and distribution in ‘bad air’ caves. Undara remains the richest subterranean hotspot in humid tropical Australia; however, significantly richer subterranean assemblages are found in arid and semi-arid calcrete aquifers, karst and iron-ore terrains, mostly in Western Australia.

This study was dedicated to the early stage of the weathering of historic basaltic flows located in Mount Cameroon. The combination of high relief (i.e. 0 to 4071 m) and high rainfall range (i.e. 1.8 to 12 m/year) lead to strong climatic contrast. Spring and rivers were sampled all around the volcano. We report here the basic chemistry of the waters as well as strontium and uranium isotopic ratios.The combination of the molar proportions of solute obtained with the modal amounts of the minerals in the basalts gives a prediction of what should be the relative molar concentrations of major compounds in the weathering waters issuing from Mount Cameroon. The measured Alkalinity/Si and Mg/Si ratios are higher than the calculated ones while the measured Ca/Si ratio is equal to the calculated value. We suggest that the Si-poor waters of Mount Cameroon are due to biological pumping, trapping of Si in Fe-silicate minerals such as Si containing ferrihydrite and Si interaction with bacterial cell wall leading to the formation of allophane type minerals which were observed in Mount Cameroon soil profiles. Calcium uptake by plants explains the lower Ca/alkalinity ratios measured in the water samples.The water–rock ratio (R) calculated from the strontium isotopic compositions of the water samples, ranges from 29,452 to 367,450. The calculated weathering rates (WR) range from 1 to 20 mm/ky and from 1 to 103 mm/ky for high and low elevations, respectively, and agree with both the thickness and the age of paleosoils found in the same area and with previously published estimates from coupled reaction-transport models. This difference emphasizes the role of vegetation and rainfall at lower elevations as compared to what happens at high elevations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
