Being a rich source of important nutrients, including highly digestible proteins, vitamins (A, D3), trace minerals (iodine, selenium) and n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA), fish consumption is generally regarded as part of a healthy dietary pattern. Exogenous feeding in aquaculture unlocks the possibility to tailor fish composition with healthy valuable nutrients. However, the use of supplements in the fish feed during fish production may undermine consumers' perception opinion of these fortified products. The effectiveness success of a functional food is a combination of its efficacy and meeting consumers' expectations. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to assess consumers' preferences regarding fish consumption, and their perception of farmed seabream as a functional food. A high consumption rate of fish, (between daily, and a minimum of three times a week), was reported by 47% of the respondents. Freshness, flavour, quality and price were the four most valued attributes. Good acceptance of the fish fortification concept was observed (53%), as well as positive receptiveness to its consumption (50%). Anti-oxidants and omega-3 fatty acids were the most accepted compounds for fish fortification. Additionally, two consumer groups were established based on their high (HIG) or low (LIG) interest in fish origin (wild vs aquaculture). The LIG was more receptive to all aspects of fish fortification and showed willingness to buy and consume it. This suggests that fortified fish could be targeted to the LIG profile group, which represents 42% of the studied population. With appropriate communication, farmed fish may be a good candidate for functional food. International audience; Environmental sustainability of aquaculture is a complex issue involving effects at local (e.g. benthic deterioration), regional (e.g. eutrophication) and global (e.g. catches for feed production) scales as a consequence of farming operations (e.g. waste emissions) and industrial processes involved in the product value chain. Integrating these effects using a holistic and multi-scale framework is essential to assess the environmental sustainability of innovative production systems such as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), in which organisms of different trophic levels are co-cultured on the same farm to minimize aquaculture waste. The environmental performances of theoretical production scenarios of red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) sea cage monoculture and an open-water IMTA co-culturing of red drum and sea cucumber (Holothuria scabra) were assessed with mathematical models at local and global scales. First, the particulate waste bioremediation potential of sea cucumber production was estimated using an individual-based bioenergetic model. Second, environmental impacts of the monoculture and the IMTA systems were estimated and compared using life cycle assessment (LCA), calculated per kg of edible protein and t of product, including uncertainty analysis. Given the current limits to stocking density observed for sea cucumbers, its co-culture in sea cages suspended beneath finfish nets may decrease slightly (by 0.73%) farm net particulate waste load and benthic impact. The monoculture and IMTA showed little difference in impact because of the large difference in production scales of finfish and sea cucumber species. Removing 100% of finfish feces particulate waste requires cultivating sea cucumber at scale similar to that of finfish (1.3 kg of sea cucumber per kg of finfish). Nonetheless, LCA showed trends in IMTA performance: lower eutrophication impact and net primary production use but higher cumulative energy demand and climate change impacts, generating an impact transfer between categories. Intensification of sea cucumber culture could increase local and global environmental benefits, but further research is necessary to design rearing units that can optimize production and/or bioremediation and that can be practically integrated into existing finfish monoculture units. The methodology defined here can be a powerful tool to predict the magnitude of environmental benefits that can be expected from new and complex production systems and to show potential impact transfer between spatial scales. We recommend applying it to other IMTA systems and species associations and including socio-economic criteria to fully assess the sustainability of future seafood production systems.

WOS: 000442210300011, 30151043, Science Citation Index Expanded, Unraveling adaptive genetic variation represents, in addition to the estimate of population demographic parameters, a cornerstone for the management of aquatic natural living resources, which, in turn, represent the raw material for breeding programs. The turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) is a marine flatfish of high commercial value living on the European continental shelf. While wild populations are declining, aquaculture is flourishing in southern Europe. We evaluated the genetic structure of turbot throughout its natural distribution range (672 individuals; 20 populations) by analyzing allele frequency data from 755 single nucleotide polymorphism discovered and genotyped by double-digest RAD sequencing. The species was structured into four main regions: Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Adriatic Sea, and Black Sea, with subtle differentiation apparent at the distribution margins of the Atlantic region. Genetic diversity and effective population size estimates were highest in the Atlantic populations, the area of greatest occurrence, while turbot from other regions showed lower levels, reflecting geographical isolation and reduced abundance. Divergent selection was detected within and between the Atlantic Ocean and Baltic Sea regions, and also when comparing these two regions with the Black Sea. Evidence of parallel evolution was detected between the two low salinity regions, the Baltic and Black seas. Correlation between genetic and environmental variation indicated that temperature and salinity were probably the main environmental drivers of selection. Mining around the four genomic regions consistently inferred to be under selection identified candidate genes related to osmoregulation, growth, and resistance to diseases. WOS: 000414941000006, A 12-week feeding trial was conducted to estimate the effects of supplemented amino acids (lysine and methionine) with different dietary protein levels on growth, haematology and liver histology in meagre (Argyrosomus regius) at two different sizes: fingerling (15.2g) and juvenile (44.4g). Six practical diets were prepared, and three of these practical diets were formulated with 40 (P40), 44 (P44) and 48% (P48) crude protein without supplementation of amino acids. Other three diets having same protein levels were supplemented with lysine and methionine (P40AA, P44AA and P48AA) to bring these amino acids level up to that estimated to be at the least in the 48% protein diet. Final mean weight (FMW) and specific growth rate (SGR) of P48AA in fingerlings were higher than that of 40AA. According to FMW and SGR of juveniles, there was interaction found between dietary protein levels and the supplementation of amino acids. The FMW and SGR of meagre fed P44AA were higher than that of fish fed the other diets, except fish fed the P48. Economic profit index, packed cell volume and haemoglobin for juvenile meagre were significantly improved with the dietary protein level and amino acid supplementation. The liver tissues of the P48 group in both sizes displayed better structure compared with the other groups. In conclusion, dietary crude protein content of practical diets for juvenile meagre could be reduced from 48% to 44% by adding essential amino acids with an enhancement in growth, health and economic profit., T.C. The nutritional and sensory quality of a fish fillet is subject to alterations depending on the culinary method used for preparation. The current study aimed to explore the effects of custom culinary preparation methods (steaming, oven-cooking, frying) on the fillet lipid and sensory quality of two important Mediterranean farmed fish species varying in their tissue fat content. These included, lean meagre and medium-fat gilthead seabream. The results indicated that culinary treatment effects on lipid quality differed among species, especially for frying. Frying created unique sensory profiles, whereas steam- and oven-cooking resulted in similar sensory profiles per species. The variable effects of culinary treatments on the lipid and sensory quality indicate that the choice of preparation method should be related to the fish species and its fat content.

European aquaculture is an industry with a high sustainability profile contributing to the supply of safe seafood. However, several diseases can affect farmed fish and it is imperative to find alternatives for chemotherapeutic treatments when disease outbreaks occur. Maintenance of health through nutrition is well-establish in modern animal farming, and amino acids (AA) are promising candidates as functional additives to improve fish health. Therefore, the goal of this research is to provide a better understanding of the influence of tryptophan supplementation on nutritional condition and immune mechanisms in fish. Triplicate groups of fish (13.3 ± 0.3g) previously fed with a fishmeal-based diet were either fed a control diet with an extreme formulation (0% fishmeal) but meeting the AA requirements (CTRL), or the SUP diet, formulated as the CTRL with an increase in tryptophan (TRP) content. After 2 and 13 weeks of feeding, head-kidney (HK), liver (L) and white skeletal muscle (WSM) were collected for gene expression, whereas plasma was suited for humoral immune parameters. A holistic approach using transcriptomic, humoral and zootechnical parameters was undertaken. The expression of 29–31 genes for WSM, L or HK confirms an effect due to the treatment across time. A two-way ANOVA analysis revealed that 15–24 genes varied significantly depending on the tissue, and the multivariate analysis by means of PLS-DA explained (R) and predicted (Q) with four components up to 93% and 78% of total variance, respectively. Component 1 (R = 50.06%) represented the time effects, whereas components 2 (24.36%) and 3 (13.89%) grouped fish on the basis of dietary treatment, at early sampling. The HK results in particular suggest that fish fed SUP diet displayed an immunostimulated state at 2 weeks. No major differences were observed in plasma humoral parameters, despite an increase in antiprotease and peroxidase activities after 13 weeks regardless of dietary treatment. These results suggest that tryptophan supplementation may improve the seabream immune status after 2 weeks. Larvae and early juveniles of fast-growing fish species show tremendous growth potential, leading to higher requirements for protein, high-unsaturated fatty acids, and other nutrients. Several commercial weaning diets with relatively high success have been developed for low/moderate-growing species; however, additional challenges are outlined to meet growth potential and energy requirements of such fast-growing species. The objective of the present study was to evaluate two commercial microdiets for marine fish, one having simultaneously a very high protein and high lipid contents (HIGH), and another (MOD) with a high protein and moderate lipid content, in a growth performance trial with greater amberjack post-larvae from 33 to 78 days after hatching. Moreover, histological preparations of liver, anterior and posterior intestine were assessed for hepatic and intestinal lipid inclusions quantification and gut epithelial brush height measurement. Activities of the digestive enzymes: pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase and amylase were also analyzed. Post-larvae fed HIGH microdiet exhibited higher final weight and lower feed conversion ratio that those fed on MOD microdiet. Liver displayed a higher level of lipid inclusions for the MOD diet than for HIGH diet. Moreover, enterocytes of posterior intestine presented a much higher level of supranuclear vacuoles for the HIGH diet compared to MOD diet. The lower Trypsin/Chymotrypsin ratio observed at the end of the experiment in larvae fed on MOD diet may indicate a deficiency in protein of this diet. Together, these results support that larvae of greater amberjack, and likely other fast-growing marine fish species, require high protein–high lipid microdiets. Blood and its parameters can give specific indications on the welfare of fishes. Many endogenous and exogenous factors exert influences on the characteristics of blood. The correct interpretation of fish hematology for a given species depends on the availability of reference values. The purpose of the present study was therefore to build a database with data on haematological profiles of Mugil cephalus (Linnaeus 1758) and goldfish Carassius auratus (Linnaeus 1758), in particular of some blood cells, namely red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC) and thrombocytes (TC). All the blood parameters studied showed significant differences in the two fish species considered, using flow cytometry and optical microscopy coupled with an automated system. In particular, RBC showed an increase in mullets in respect to goldfish, while WBC and TC decreased. The differences found may be due to the environmental conditions and the different eating habits of the two species. The results of this research will allow to better understand how the different dietary habits and environmental conditions can influence the haematological parameters of fishes. Flow cytometry represents a modern diagnostic technique in human. Moreover, the technique used by combining flow cytometry with automated haematological counting, has proved very effective in the early evaluation of haematological parameters of various fish species.

International audience; Impacted marine environments lead to metal accumulation in edible marine fish, ultimately impairing human health. Nevertheless, metal accumulation is highly variable among marine fish species. In addition to ecological features, differences in bioaccumulation can be attributed to species-related physiological processes, which were investigated in two marine fish present in the Canary Current Large Marine Ecosystem (CCLME), where natural and anthropogenic metal exposure occurs. The European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis were exposed for two months to two environmentally realistic dietary cadmium (Cd) doses before a depuration period. Organotropism (i.e., Cd repartition between organs) was studied in two storage compartments (the liver and muscle) and in an excretion vector (bile). To better understand the importance of physiological factors, the significance of hepatic metallothionein (MT) concentrations in accumulation and elimination kinetics in the two species was explored. Accumulation was faster in the sea bass muscle and liver, as inferred by earlier Cd increase and a higher accumulation rate. The elimination efficiency was also higher in the sea bass liver compared to sole, as highlighted by greater biliary excretion. In the liver, no induction of MT synthesis was attributed to metal exposure, challenging the relevance of using MT concentration as a biomarker of metal contamination. However, the basal MT pools were always greater in the liver of sea bass than in sole. This species-specific characteristic might have enhanced Cd biliary elimination and relocation to other organs such as muscle through the formation of more Cd/MT complexes. Thus, MT basal concentrations seem to play a key role in the variability observed in terms of metal concentrations in marine fish species.

Over the next century, climate change of anthropogenic origin is a major threat to global biodiversity. We show here that developmental temperature can have significant effects on zebrafish cardiac anatomy and swimming performance. Zebrafish embryos were subjected to three developmental temperature treatments (TD = 24, 28 or 32 °C) up to metamorphosis and then all maintained under common conditions (28 °C) to adulthood. We found that developmental temperature affected cardiac anatomy of juveniles and adults even eight months after the different thermal treatments had been applied. The elevation of TD induced a significant increase of the ventricle roundness in juvenile (10% increase) and male (22% increase), but not in female zebrafish. The aerobic exercise performance of adult zebrafish was significantly decreased as TD elevated from 24 to 32 °C. Gene expression analysis that was performed at the end of the temperature treatments revealed significant up-regulation of nppa, myh7 and mybpc3 genes at the colder temperature. Our work provides the first evidence for a direct link between developmental temperature and cardiac form at later life-stages. Our results also add to the emerging rationale for understanding the potential effects of global warming on how fish will perform in their natural environment.

This study investigated the effect of extrusion on digestibility of different blends containing Hermetia illucens (HI) larvae or prepupae. Five blends of HI larvae or prepupae and wheat flour, in a ratio of 25:75, with or without sunflower oil addition, have been formulated as follows: prepupae+wheat (no oil); prepupae+wheat (low oil); prepupae+wheat (medium oil); prepupae+wheat (high oil); larvae+wheat (no oil). Ether extract (EE) content in different blend was 31.5, 38.9, 46.3, 53.7 and 46.27 g kg(-1) on wet basis (wb), respectively. Blends were homogeneous for moisture (238.9 g kg(-1)) and crude protein (112.6 g kg(-1) wb). Feed blends were extruded by a co-rotating, conical twin-screw mini extruder and net torque value (NTV) was recorded as indicator of extrudability. The best performing blend was furtherly tested at four barrel temperatures (60, 70, 80 and 90 degrees C). The present study aims at identifying the lowest number of fish (European seabass) that could be used for monitoring and/or experimental purposes in small-scale fish facilities by quantifying the effect that the number of individuals has on the Shannon entropy (SE) of the trajectory followed by the shoal's centroid. Two different experiments were performed: (i) one starting with 50 fish and decreasing to 25, 13, and 1 fish, and (ii) a second experiment starting with one fish, adding one new fish per day during 5 days, ending up with five fish in the tank. The fish were recorded for 1h daily, during which time a stochastic event (a hit in the tank) was introduced. The SE values were calculated from the images corresponding to three arbitrary basal (shoaling) periods of 3.5 min prior to the event, and to the 3.5 min period immediately after the event (schooling response). Taking both experiments together, the coefficient of variation (CV) of the SE among measurements was largest for one fish systems (CV 37.12 and 17.94% for the daily average basal and response SE, respectively) and decreased concomitantly with the number of fish (CV 8.6-10% for the basal SE of 2 to 5 fish systems and 5.86, 2.69, and 2.31% for the basal SE of 13, 25, and 50 fish, respectively). The SE of the systems kept a power relationship with the number of fish (basal: R-2 = 0.93 and response: R-2 = 0.92). Thus, 5-13 individuals should be the lowest number for a compromise between acceptable variability (< 10%) in the data and reduction in the number of fish. We believe this to be the first scientific work made to estimate the minimum number of individuals to be used in subsequent experimental (including behavioral) studies using shoaling fish species that reaches a compromise between the reduction in number demanded by animal welfare guidelines and a low variability in the fish system's response. WOS: 000440877200004, Freshness changes in lessepsian lizardfish (Saurida lessepsianus, n. sp.) was investigated during ice storage of 18 days through chemical, microbiological, and sensory analyses. In contrast to K and related values, proposed Fr-i value decreased with the loss of freshness. Average K value was 6 % prime freshness soon after the catch, and reached to 30 % in limit of acceptability on 15th day. TVB-N value increased from 16.9 mg TVB-N 100 g(-1) to 32 mg TVB-N 100 g(-1) in spoiled fish on the 18th day. Initial pH value of the flesh was by beginning 6.46 and increased to 7.5 on the 18th day. Total microbial load was by beginning day 3.45 log cfu g(-1) and had a very slow increase until the 5th day (4.49 log cfu g(-1)), and it reached 7.02 log cfu g(-1) at the end of the storage period. 00004 ăWOS:000367853300006; International audience; This study examined the effect of a commercial mix of Bacillus sp. on survival, growth and digestive enzyme activities of Florida pompano, red drum and common snook. Larvae were fed either live feed enriched with Algamac 3050 (Control), Algamac 3050 and probiotics (PB), or the previous diet combined with a daily addition of probiotics to the tank water (PB+). Survival was not affected by the treatments for any of the species. At the end of the pompano and snook trial, standard lengths of larvae from the PB and PB+ treatments were significantly greater than for the control larvae. Microbiological analyses were performed at the end of the pompano trial, and numbers of presumptive Vibrio were not a concern in the system. For both pompano and snook, trypsin-specificactivity was higher in PB and PB+ larvae compared with the control larvae. Similarly, alkaline phosphatase activity was higher for the pompano larvae fed the PB and PB+ treatments and for the snook larvae fed the PB+ treatment compared with the control larvae. This experiment suggests that a mix of Bacillus sp. can promote growth through an early maturation of the digestive system during the early larval stages of pompano and snook.

European aquaculture industry should be at the forefront of sustainable development, providing healthy and safe food of the highest quality to the consumer, through an environmentally sound approach. The purpose of this review was to explore in what way the current drive for sustainability has affected what the consumer perceives as quality in fish, specifically in gilthead seabream, one of the most important farmed species in the Mediterranean. It focuses on nutritional aspects such as fish meal and fish oil replacement, quality tailoring through finishing strategies, the influence of different farming systems and the effect of slaughter stress on seabream quality. In general, fish meal and fish oil replacement with vegetable ingredients will result in changes in the fatty acid profile of the fillets, and consequently the potential health benefits seabream offers to the consumer. While organoleptic properties suffer little change, the impact of these ingredients on welfare has not been fully investigated. Further studies are also needed to evaluate the effect of land animal ingredients on seabream quality. In either case, although finishing strategies to restore essential fatty acids are not completely effective, seabream can still retain a high nutritional value. Information on the use of dietary supplements as finishing strategies is still extremely scarce. Regarding fish welfare, the high densities practised in intensive production systems pose concerns which warrant further research in this area. Furthermore, new alternatives for common harvesting and slaughter methods are needed to improve welfare, as traditional methods are clearly stressful. In the present study, we hypothesized that the manipulation of dietary protein complexity may affect Senegalese sole larvae capacity to digest, absorb and retain protein during metamorphosis, as well as the mRNA expression of genes encoding for the precursors of proteolytic enzymes of the digestive tract and the enterocyte peptide transporter PepT1, which may have further impact on somatic growth. Three diets were formulated using approximately the same practical ingredients, except for the main protein source. The Intact diet protein content was mostly based on intact plant protein where the target peptide molecular weight (MW) would be > 70 kDa. The PartH diet protein fraction was mostly based on a protein hydrolysate with a high content of 5–70 kDa peptides. The HighH diet protein fraction was mostly based on a protein hydrolysate with a high content of 5 kDa peptides. A growth trial was performed with larvae reared at 19 °C under a co-feeding regime from mouth opening. The transcription of pga, tryp1c, ialp, ampn and pepT1 (encoding respectively for PepsinogenA, Trypsinogen1C, Intestinal alkaline phosphatase, Aminopeptidase N and for the enterocyte peptide transporter 1) was quantified by qPCR, during the metamorphosis climax (16 DAH) and after the metamorphosis was completed (28 DAH). An in vivo method of controlled tube-feeding was used to assess the effect on the larvae capacity to utilize polypeptides with different MW (1.0 and 7.2 kDa) representing a typical peptide MW of each of the hydrolysates included in the diets. The PartH diet stimulated growth in metamorphosing larvae (16 DAH), whereas the Intact diet stimulated growth after 36 DAH. The Intact diet stimulated the larvae absorption capacity for 1.0 kDa peptides at 16 DAH, which may have contributed for enhanced growth in later stages. The PartH diet stimulated the transcription of tryp1c and pept1 at 28 DAH, which seemed to reflect on increased post-larvae capacity to retain dietary 7.2 kDa polypeptides. That may indicate a possible strategy to optimize the digestion and utilisation of the PartH dietary protein, though it did not reflect into increased growth. The Intact diet promoted the transcription of pepsinogenA, which may reflect a reduced gastrointestinal transit time, which could have enhanced the dietary nutrients assimilation, ultimately improving growth. Microalgal biomasses are known to play a major role in fish pigmentation, which is particularly important in farmed fish, since colour and external appearance are the first cue for customers when choosing seafood. A study was undertaken to assess the potential of microalgae biomass from the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum as a functional ingredient for gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) feeds. Three experimental diets were designed: a control diet (CTRL), this same diet supplemented with 2.5% of P. tricornutum wild strain (diet MA20); and a third diet with 2.5% of P. tricornutum biomass (diet MA37) cultivated under different temperature and light regimes that resulted in higher levels of fucoxanthin. Microalgae diets led to a reduction (P < 0.05 in MA37) of whole-body fat and lower lipid retention (P < 0.05 in MA20 and MA37). Microalgae did not impact odour, flavour, whiteness, and fatness perception in cooked fillets. Overall, colour analysis showed that P. tricornutum biomass led to significant differences compared to control in specific areas: the MA37 diet induced a significantly (P < 0.05) lighter and more vivid yellow colouration of seabream operculum (Delta E* approximate to 5) perceptible to the human eye; ventral skin lightness was also affected by the dietary treatments (P = 0.040), being higher for microalgae-fed groups, though this difference was not perceptually strong (Delta E* approximate to 1.7). Public library science; International audience; Coastal ecosystems, which provide numerous essential ecological functions for fish, are threatened by the proliferation of green macroalgae that significantly modify habitat conditions in intertidal areas. Understanding the influence of green tides on the nursery function of these ecosystems is essential to determine their potential effects on fish recruitment success. In this study, the influence of green tides on juvenile fish was examined in an intertidal sandy beach area, the Bay of Saint-Brieuc (Northwestern France), during two annual cycles of green tides with varying levels of intensity. The responses of three nursery-dependent fish species, the pelagic Sprattus sprattus (L.), the demersal Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) and the benthic Pleuronectes platessa L., were analysed to determine the effects of green tides according to species-specific habitat niche and behaviour. The responses to this perturbation were investigated based on habitat selection and a comparison of individual performance between a control and an impacted site. Several indices on different integrative scales were examined to evaluate these responses (antioxidant defence capacity, muscle total lipid, morphometric condition and growth). Based on these analyses, green tides affect juvenile fish differently according to macroalgal density and species-specific tolerance, which is linked to their capacity to move and to their distribution in the water column. A decreasing gradient of sensitivity was observed from benthic to demersal and pelagic fish species. At low densities of green macroalgae, the three species stayed at the impacted site and the growth of plaice was reduced. At medium macroalgal densities, plaice disappeared from the impacted site and the growth of sea bass and the muscle total lipid content of sprat were reduced. Finally, when high macroalgal densities were reached, none of the studied species were captured at the impacted site. Hence, sites affected by green tides are less favourable nursery grounds for all the studied species, with species-specific effects related to macroalgal density.

The objectives of this study were: (1) to develop a bio-economic model to derive economic values for aquaculture species, (2) to apply the model to determine the economic importance and economic values of traits in a case-study on gilthead seabream, and (3) to validate the model by comparison with a profit equation for a simplified production system.MethodsA bio-economic model was developed to simulate a grow-out farm for gilthead seabream, and then used to simulate gross margin at the current levels of the traits and after one genetic standard deviation change in each trait with the other traits remaining unchanged. A transient bradycardia prior to the AB is followed by sustained tachycardia during breath-hold. This study evaluated air-breathing and cardiac responses to sustained aerobic exercise in juveniles (total length similar to 20 cm), and how exercise influenced variations in f(H) associated with AB. In particular, it investigated the role of adrenergic and cholinergic control in cardiac responses, and effects of pharmacological abolition of this control on air-breathing responses. Sustained exercise at 15, 30 and 45 cm s(-1) in a swim tunnel caused significant increases in f(AB) and f(H), from approximately 5 breaths h(-1) and 60 heartbeats min(-1) at the lowest speed, to over 60 breaths h(-1) and 100 beats min(-1) at the highest, respectively. There was a progressive decline in the degree of variation in f(H), around each AB, as f(AB) increased with exercise intensity. Total autonomic blockade abolished all variation in fH during exercise, and around each AB, but f(AB) responses were the same as in untreated animals. International audience; To sustain eel aquaculture, development of reproduction in captivity is vital. The aim of this review is to assess our current knowledge on the nutrition of broodstock eels in order to improve the quality of broodstock under farming conditions, drawing information from wild adult eels and other marine pelagic spawners. Freshwater eels spawn marine pelagic eggs with an oil droplet (type II), and with a large perivitelline space. Compared with other marine fish eggs, eel eggs are at the extreme end of the spectrum in terms of egg composition, even within this type II group. Eel eggs contain a large amount of total lipids, and a shortage of neutral lipids has been implied a cause for reduced survival of larvae. Eel eggs have higher ARA but lower EPA and DHA levels than in other fish. Too high levels of ARA negatively affected reproduction in the Japanese eel, although high levels of 18:2n-6 in the eggs of farmed eels were not detrimental. The total free amino acid amount and profile of eel eggs appears much different from other marine pelagic spawners. Nutritional intervention to influence egg composition seems feasible, but responsiveness of farmed eels to induced maturation might also require environmental manipulation. The challenge remains to succeed in raising European eel broodstock with formulated feeds and to enable the procurement of viable eggs and larvae, once adequate protocols for induced maturation have been developed

Consumers' interest in organic foods is increasing and so is the need for robust analytical tools for their authentication. This review focuses on the most promising biomarkers/analytical approaches that are available for the authentication of organic produce. Food products have been subdivided into two groups: foods of plant origin (crops) and foods of animal origin (meat, milk and dairy products, eggs and fish). For each food category the most suitable biomarkers are presented and their potential for authentication is discussed. In the light of current knowledge, it is unlikely that the authentication of organic food products can be attained by the measurement of a single marker. Analytical approaches based on the measurement of multiple markers and/or complex chemical or physical profiles/fingerprints supported by multivariate statistical analysis seem considerably more promising in this respect. For the development of robust classification models, well-designed experimental studies must be performed that rely on data sets that are both well balanced and of sufficient size to ensure that all relevant sources of variation for the target biomarkers are included in the reference database. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry.

Innate and acquired immune responses of Gilthead Seabream Sparus aurata was studied under normal culture and short-term stressful conditions for 18 months in offshore sea cages in Alghero Bay, Italy. Every 45 d, 50 fish were sampled and divided into two groups: fish in the first group (normal culture conditions) were bled after harvesting; fish in the second group were put into a tank under stressful conditions (crowding and confinement) and bled after 2 h. Innate humoral immunity, such as complement-like, hemagglutination, and lysozyme activities, was determined in the sera of both groups. Pathogen challenge was not performed, but the specific humoral immune response was assessed against the most common pathogens affecting cultured fish in Sardinia. Stressed fish, compared with the control, showed a lower lysozyme activity against Vibrio (Listonella) anguillarum, which was not clearly correlated with temperatures. Complement-like activity differed between the first and second half of the study and, at the end of the trial, a slightly higher activity was recorded in the controls than in the stressed fish. Hemagglutination activity was mainly higher in the stressed fish than in control fish. Confinement, crowding, and cold water temperature caused decreased lysozyme activity in short-term stressed Gilthead Seabream compared with those reared normally. The specific humoral immune response, against V. anguillarum, Tenacibaculum mesophilum, Enterococcus Seriolicida, and Aeromonas sobria, fluctuated during the rearing period, particularly during the first year of culture. WOS: 000382113800013, The aim of this study was to determine the levels of Ag, Al, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in wild seabream (Sparus aurata), blotched picarel (Spicara maena), pandora (Pagellus erythrinus) fished from the Aegean Sea and the farmed seabream (Sparus aurata), and to assess the risks depending on their consumption by humans. A total of 40 fishes were collected and the metal levels were determined using ICP-OES. The metal levels were determined to be Ag (Nd), Al (3.20-8.87), Co (0.01-0.01), Cr (0.02-0.51), Cu (0.96-1.28), Fe (0.23-4.30), Mn (0.15-0.39), Ni (0.13-0.22), Pb (0.00-0.10) and Zn (6.18-7.30) (mg kg(-1) w.w.) in the study. No Ag or Cd were found in the samples. The heavy metal levels were below the national and international legal limits. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and total target hazard quotient (TTHQ) method was used to determine the possible risks of the heavy metals on human health. THQ and TTHQ values were all less than 1 and it was concluded that they do not pose any risks in terms of human health.

The objectives of the present study were to determine, for Nile tilapia of different body weights and fed to satiation, (1) the incipient dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at which feed intake starts to level off and (2) the effect of DO on nitrogen and energy balances. Two successive experiments were conducted with two weight classes of male Nile tilapia (>200 g, Experiment 1, and 200 g continued to increase as DO increased from 2.6 to 6.0 mg L-1. The latter curve suggests that the incipient DO for fish>200 g is about 5.5 mg L-1. Fish tended to reduce the energy requirement for maintenance as DO declined. A DO reduction caused an increase in the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), but further declines in DO to levels below a critical level decreased ADC. The DO did not have a considerable effect on the metabolizable energy: digestible energy ratio of the diet.

The defence system of the distal gut (hindgut and rectum) of Atlantic cod, (Gadus morhua L.) was studied using (immuno)histochemical, electron microscopical and real-time quantitative PCR techniques. The uptake and transport of macromolecules in the intestinal epithelium was also investigated. In this study we observed that cod has many and large goblet cells in its intestinal epithelium and that IgM(+) cells are present in the lamina propria and their number is considerably higher in the rectum than in the intestine. Myeloperoxidase staining revealed low numbers of granulocytes in and under the epithelium of the distal intestine, whereas high numbers were found clustered in the submucosa of the rectum. Electron microscopy not only confirmed these observations, but also revealed the presence of lymphoid cells and macrophages within the intestinal epithelium. Acid phosphatase staining demonstrated more positive macrophage-like cells in the rectum than in the distal intestine. Antigen uptake studies showed a diffused absorption of horse radish peroxidase (HRP) and LTB-GFP, whereas ferritin uptake could not be detected. Basal gene expression of cytokines (IL-1beta, IL-8 and IL-10) and immune relevant molecules (hepcidin and BPI/LPB) were compared in both the intestine and rectum and revealed approximately 2-9 times higher expression in the rectum, of which IL-1beta expression showed the most prominent difference. The present results clearly indicate that intestinal immunity is very prominent in the rectum of cod.

The effects of dissolved oxygen concentration combined with sublethal doses of un-ionised ammonia nitrogen (UIA-N) on growth and physiology were investigated in juvenile turbot. Fish with a mean ± SD initial weight of 19.1 ± 4.1 g, were reared in replicate at normoxic (80–85% O 2 saturation) and hyperoxic (110–115% O 2 saturation) conditions, combined with either control or two sublethal concentrations of un-ionised ammonia (0, 0.17 and 0.31 mg UIA-N l − 1 ) added for 64 days at 18 °C and pH 8.04 in a flow-through system. The subsequent effect of fixed O 2 and UIA concentrations on growth and blood physiology was measured every 22 days. The results show that UIA-N concentrations only had a negative effect on growth under normoxic conditions, suggesting that hyperoxic conditions may increase tolerance to un-ionised ammonia in juvenile turbot. Only minor effects on the acid-base balance were found. A generally higher blood CO 2 and P CO 2 , along with an accumulation of HCO 3 − resulting in an increased blood pH was found in the hyperoxic groups towards the end of the experiment. We conclude that, under normoxic conditions, a chronic exposure of ammonia above 0.17 mg UIA-N l − 1 will have a negative effect on growth and that hyper-oxygenation can be a possible solution to counteract this harmful effect.

Although molecular ecology of macroparasites is still in its infancy, general patterns are beginning to emerge, e.g. that the most vagile host in a complex life cycle is the main determinant of the population genetic structure of their parasites. This insight stems from the observation that populations of parasites with only freshwater hosts are more structured than those with terrestrial or airborne hosts. Until now, the same has not been tested for marine systems, where, in theory, a fully marine life cycle might sustain high dispersal rates because of the absence of obvious physical barriers in the sea. Here, we tested whether a marine trematode parasite that utilises migratory birds exhibited weaker population genetic structure than those whose life cycle utilises marine fish as the vagile host. Part of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (COI) gene was sequenced from individual sporocysts from populations along the Atlantic coast of Europe and North Africa. Strong population structure (Φst = 0.25, p < 0.0001) was found in the fully marine trematode Bucephalus minimus (hosted by fish), while no significant structure (Φst = 0.015, p = 0.19257) was detected in Gymnophallus choledochus (hosted by birds). However, demographic models indicate recent colonisation rather than high dispersal as an alternative explanation of the low levels of structure observed in G. choledochus. Our study is the first to identify significant genetic population structure in a marine autogenic parasite, suggesting that connectivity between populations of marine parasites can be limited despite the general potential for high dispersal of their hosts in the marine environment.

The thymus plays a pivotal role in the development of the adaptive immune system, an important factor that separates higher vertebrates from the rest of the animal phyla. The development of functional T-cells from thymocytes is a crucial step in the development of a functional vertebrate immune system and whilst recent advances in molecular and developmental biology have advanced our understanding of T-cell development, they have also provided potential model species across the vertebrate phyla including the zebrafish (Danio rerio). However, this species is one of more than 20,000 species of fish that could assist in elucidating the development of the vertebrate thymus and, consequently, the evolution of the vertebrate immune response. In this paper we review the knowledge of the teleost thymus through the organogenesis and development studies in teleosts together with advances in molecular and functional approaches. Where necessary we will combine this knowledge with that obtained in higher vertebrates.

This paper analyses nutrient conversions, which are taking place in integrated intensive aquaculture systems. In these systems fish is cultured next to other organisms, which are converting otherwise discharged nutrients into valuable products. These conversions are analyzed based on nitrogen and phosphorous balances using a mass balance approach. The analytical concept of this review comprises a hypothetical system design with five modules: (1) the conversion of feed nutrients into fish biomass, the “Fish-Biomass-Converter”; (2) the separation of solid and dissolved fish waste/nutrients; the “Fish-Waste-Processor”; (3) the conversion of dissolved fish waste/nutrients, the “Phototrophic-herbivore-Converter”; (4 and 5) the conversion of solid fish waste, the “Bacterial-Waste-Converter”, or the “Detrivorous-Converter”. In the reviewed examples, fish culture alone retains 20–50% feed nitrogen (N) and 15–65% feed phosphorous (P). The combination of fish culture with phototrophic conversion increases nutrient retention of feed N by 15–50% and feed P by up to 53%. If in addition herbivore consumption is included, nutrient retention decreases by 60–85% feed N and 50–90% feed P. This is according to the general observation of nutrient losses from one trophic level to the next. The conversion of nutrients into bacteria and detrivorous worm biomass contributes only in smaller margins (e.g. 7% feed N and 6% feed P and 0.06% feed N 0.03 × 10−3% feed P, respectively). All integrated modules have their specific limitations, which are related to uptake kinetics, nutrient preference, unwanted conversion processes and abiotic factors.

The need for unbiased digestibility estimation has led to the development of a number of faeces collection methods. However, there is still a large variation in apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of diet/ingredients between these methods. This study investigated the impact of dietary quality on ADC and faeces recovery measurements obtained by two faecal collection methods (Choubert and settling tank). The fish were fed five diets: a control diet as high-quality diet, two levels of dried duckweed (20% and 40%) and two levels of fresh duckweed (20% and 40%), which were added to the control diet, as low-quality diets. Apparent digestibility coefficient estimates were highly correlated (r>0.95) between both faecal collection methods. For all diets the ADC estimates were higher when using settling tanks compared with Choubert collectors. For the control diet differences in ADC between two collectors were small, but by inclusion of duckweed these differences increased. The recovery percentage of faeces was not correlated between both faecal collection methods (r=0.22, P=0.41). The estimated recovery percentage of faeces by settling tanks was about three times higher than by Choubert. In conclusion, the differences in ADC and faeces recovery measured by two faecal collection methods depend on diet quality

Dry matter (DMD), protein (PD), ash (AD), fat (FD), gross energy (ED) and phosphorus (PhD) digestibility coefficients were determined for five different iso-N fish diets fed to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The control diet contained fishmeal (35%), corn (29%), wheat (20%), wheat bran (10%), fish oil (3%), diamol (2%) and premix (1%). Partial replacement of dry matter of fishmeal, corn grain, wheat grain, wheat bran and fish oil by 20% and 40% of dry matter of duckweed, in a dry and fresh form, was performed. Diets of treatments 1 and 2 included 20% and 40% of duckweed, respectively, in a dry form. In treatments 3 and 4, tilapia received formulated diets 4 and 5 in addition to 20% and 40% fresh duckweed providing the same amount of dry matter and protein as in control. The specific growth rates (SGRs) of tilapia were 1.51±0.07, 1.38±0.03, 1.31±0.06, 1.44±0.02 and 1.33±0.05, in control and treatments 1–4. There was no significant difference between SGR for the control diet and the diet with 20% fresh duckweed, while the other treatment groups had significantly lower SGR. All the treatment diets provide good values for feed conversion ratios (FCRs) and protein efficiency ratio (PER). Dry matter of diets ranged from 61.8% in treatment 4 to 85.2% in control. All the diets have high PD (88.4–93.9%) and high-energy digestibility (78.1–90.7%). Dry matter of duckweed were 66.8, 63.3, 45.8 and 28.3 in treatments 1 to 4 respectively. Protein values were 78.4, 79.9, 77.6 and 75.9, while ED values were 59.8, 60.9, 64.5 and 58.4 in treatments 1 to 4 respectively. [EN] The objective of this study was evaluating the effects on the growth rate and flesh quality of separating larvae according to their larval width in cultured gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata, L.). Progeny from two broodstocks (A and B) were divided into two groups according to larval width: heads (being the larger specimens) and tails. After 18months both groups were analysed to evaluate growth, carcass traits and proximal composition. The head specimens reached a larger size and showed a greater level of well-being and degree of nourishment. Total body and fillet composition in general were found to be as expected for this species. Some differences were found in total body composition between head and tail specimens in both batches, and in the fillet composition in batch B (higher fat and lower moisture content in the head specimens). Sensory analyses were carried out using untrained panelists, who were unable to distinguish between the head and tail samples in batch A, whereas differences were noticeable in batch B. Samples from the head group were judged to be tastier and juicier, a consequence of their higher fat content. This review describes the extant knowledge on the teleostean mucosal adaptive immune mechanisms, which is relevant for the development of oral or mucosal vaccines. In the last decade, a number of studies have shed light on the presence of new key components of mucosal immunity: a distinct immunoglobulin class (IgT or IgZ) and the polymeric Ig receptor (pIgR). In addition, intestinal T cells and their putative functions, antigen uptake mechanisms at mucosal surfaces and new mucosal vaccination strategies have been reported. New information on pIgR of Atlantic cod and common carp and comparison of natural and specific cell-mediated cytotoxicity in the gut of common carp and European seabass, is also included in this review. Based on the known facts about intestinal immunology and mucosal vaccination, suggestions are made for the advancement of fish vaccines. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

A new type of vertebral malformation is described, consisting of deformed cartilaginous neural and haemal processes and the compression and fusion of vertebral bodies. The malformation is designated as haemal vertebral compression and fusion (haemal VCF). We studied the aetiology of the malformations and described microanatomical histopathological alterations. The malformations were detected during routine quality control in one of six monitored Gilthead sea bream populations. Haemal VCF affected the posterior part of the vertebral column (haemal vertebrae). In 20% of the deformed specimens, haemal VCF was combined with lordosis. At 35dph (days post-hatching), early anatomical signs of the haemal VCF consisted of abnormal centrum mineralization, malformed cartilaginous neural and haemal processes and developing lordotic alterations. The histological examination of the deformed individuals revealed that haemal VCF is preceded by notochord abnormalities. The frequency of deformed individuals was three times higher at 35 than at 61dph (50.3% vs. 17.2%, n=157 and n=250, respectively). No signs of repair or reversion of malformations have been observed. Thus, the steep decrease in deformities in older animals suggests that haemal VCF is linked to high mortality rates. The results are discussed in respect of the possible causative factors of haemal VCF.

Despite considerable progress in recent years, many questions regarding fish larval nutrition remain largely unanswered, and several research avenues remain open. A holistic understanding of the supply line of nutrients is important for developing diets for use in larval culture and for the adaptation of rearing conditions that meet the larval requirements for the optimal presentation of food organisms and/or microdiets. Consumers' interest in organic foods is increasing and so is the need for robust analytical tools for their authentication. This review focuses on the most promising biomarkers/analytical approaches that are available for the authentication of organic produce. Food products have been subdivided into two groups: foods of plant origin (crops) and foods of animal origin (meat, milk and dairy products, eggs and fish). For each food category the most suitable biomarkers are presented and their potential for authentication is discussed. In the light of current knowledge, it is unlikely that the authentication of organic food products can be attained by the measurement of a single marker. Analytical approaches based on the measurement of multiple markers and/or complex chemical or physical profiles/fingerprints supported by multivariate statistical analysis seem considerably more promising in this respect. For the development of robust classification models, well-designed experimental studies must be performed that rely on data sets that are both well balanced and of sufficient size to ensure that all relevant sources of variation for the target biomarkers are included in the reference database. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry.

Harvest weight has been the main selected trait for the GIFT strain of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). However, growth rate and body shape are traits of increasing interest. In the Mekong Delta of Vietnam, intensive river-cage culture and low-input ponds are the most important production environments, whereas the breeding program is conducted in an intensive nucleus pond. The first objective was to estimate heritability and phenotypic and genetic correlations for harvest weight (HW), growth rate expressed as daily growth coefficient (DGC), condition factor (K), and shape expressed as ellipticity: mid-sagittal plane (EL-H), transverse plane (EL–T), and frontal plane (EH–T). The second objective was to estimate genotype by environment interactions (G × E), expressed as the genetic correlation (rg) between the nucleus and two production environments, cage and VAC (Vietnamese acronym for garden, pond and livestock pen), for these traits. Data were obtained from the 13th generation of selection of GIFT. Within the breeding nucleus, heritability was high for HW, DGC, but low for K, EL–H, EL–T, and EH–T. DGC was positively correlated with condition factor K (rg = 0.59), while the rg of HW with K was non-significant. This suggests that selection for harvest weight alone will not result in fish with higher condition factor. Genetic correlations between HW and body dimensions (L, H, T) were 0.89–0.98, but genetic correlations of DGC with ellipticity showed that fish selected for high growth rate will become more rotund rather than simply larger. GxE was minor for harvest weight and for growth, but substantial for shape traits. For DGC, genetic correlation was 0.77 between cage and VAC, but higher between the breeding nucleus and cage or VAC. For EL-H, substantial GxE (rg 0.54) was found between cage and nucleus pond. GxE was also found for EL–T between cage–VAC (rg 0.51), and for EH–T across all three environments, although with high standard errors of estimates. We conclude that selection in nucleus ponds will produce desired correlated responses in Nile tilapia grown in river-cages as they are expected to develop a more rotund and thicker body shape at the same length compared to fish grown in ponds.

Calpains are non-lysosomal calcium-activated neutral proteases involved in a wide range of cellular processes including muscle proteolysis linked to post-mortem flesh softening. The aims of this study were (a) to characterise several members of the calpain system in gilthead sea bream and (b) to examine their expression in relation to nutritional status and muscle tenderisation. We identified the complete open reading frame of gilthead sea bream calpains1-3, sacapn1, sacapn2, sacapn3, and two paralogs of the calpain small subunit1, sacapns1a and sacapns1b. Proteins showed 63-90% sequence identity compared with sequences from mammals and other teleost fishes, and the characteristic domain structure of vertebrate calpains. Transcripts of sacapn1, sacapn2, sacapns1a and sacapns1b had a wide tissue distribution, whereas sacapn3 was almost exclusively detected in skeletal muscle. Next, we assessed transcript expression in skeletal muscle following alteration of nutritional status by (a) fasting and re-feeding or (b) feeding four experimental diets with different carbohydrate-to-protein ratios. Fasting significantly reduced plasma glucose and increased free fatty acids and triglycerides, together with a significant increase in sacapns1b expression. Following 7 days of re-feeding, plasma parameters returned to fed values and sacapn1, sacapn2, sacapns1a and sacapns1b expression was significantly reduced. Furthermore, an increase in dietary carbohydrate content (11 to 39%) diminished growth but increased muscle texture, which showed a significant correlation with decreased sacapn1 and sacapns1a expression, whilst the other calpains remained unaffected. This study has demonstrated that calpain expression is modulated by nutritional status and diet composition in gilthead sea bream, and that the expression of several calpain members is correlated with muscle texture, indicating their potential use as molecular markers for flesh quality in aquaculture production. The presence of skeletal anomalies in farmed teleost fish is currently a major problem in aquaculture, entailing economical, biological and ethical issues. The common occurrence of skeletal abnormalities in farmed fish and the absence of effective solutions for avoiding their onset or definitely culling out the affected individuals as early as possible from the productive cycle, highlight the need to improve our knowledge on the basic processes regulating fish skeletogenesis and skeletal tissues differentiation, modelling and remodelling. Severe skeletal anomalies may actually occur throughout the entire life cycle of fish, but their development often begins with slight aberrations of the internal elements. Comprehensive investigation efforts conducted on reared larvae and juveniles could provide a great contribution in filling the gap in knowledge, as skeletogenesis and skeletal tissue differentiation occur during these early life stages. The aim of this review is to provide a synthetic but comprehensive picture of the actual knowledge on the ontogeny, typologies and occurrence of skeletal anomalies, and on the proposed causative factors for their onset in larvae and juveniles of European farmed fish. The state-of-art of knowledge of these issues is analysed critically intending to individualize the main gaps of knowledge that require to be filled, in order to optimize the morphological quality of farmed juveniles. Previous experiments with Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) have demonstrated that dietary lipid levels above 8% impaired growth and did not promote protein retention. We hypothesised that this low ability to use high-lipid diets may depend on the dietary protein level. In the present study, a 2 x 2 factorial design was applied where two dietary lipid (4-17% DM) and two dietary protein (below and above the requirement levels, 48 and 54% DM) levels were tested in juveniles for 114 d. Growth performance was not improved by the increase in dietary fat, irrespectively of the dietary protein levels. Protein retention was similar among the diets, although fish fed the diets with high lipid content resulted in significantly lower protein gain. Among the enzymes involved in amino acid catabolism, only aspartate aminotransferase activity in the liver was affected by the dietary lipid levels, being stimulated in fish fed high-lipid diets. Moreover, phosphofructokinase 1 activity was significantly elevated in the muscle of Senegalese sole fed 4% lipid diets, suggesting enhanced glycolysis in the muscle when the dietary lipid supply was limited and dietary starch increased. The results confirmed that high-lipid diets do not enhance growth, and data from the selected enzymes support the assumption that lipids are not efficiently used for energy production and protein sparing, even when dietary protein is below the protein requirement of the species. Furthermore, data suggest a significant role of glucose as the energy source in Senegalese sole. The objective of the current study was to assess the extent of genotype by environment interaction for growth of sole ( Solea solea ) grown in an intensive recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) and in a semi-natural outdoor pond (POND). The RAS environment consisted of four indoor shallow raceways without sand, where fish were stocked at a density of 40 fish/m 2 and fed with dry pelleted feed. The POND environment consisted of one 100 m 2 outdoor pond, where fish were stocked at densities of 1.4 fish/m 2 , and fish could prey on live ragworms present in the sediment. S. solea ( n = 2800) offspring, produced by natural mating of wild broodstock, and with initial body weight of 64 ± 20 g, were randomly divided over the two environments. After a growing period of 165 days, all fish were harvested and harvest weight (HW, g), specific growth rate (SGR, %BW/d) and sex of all fish was assessed; molecular relatedness between animals was estimated using 9 microsatellite markers. In POND 980 fish and in RAS 774 fish were successfully genotyped and used in the analysis. SGR was higher for sole reared in POND compared to RAS (0.60 ± 0.01 vs. 0.57 ± 0.01). Pearson correlation of initial body weight with SGR was negative, and more so in POND compared to RAS (− 0.30 vs. − 0.16, respectively). Genetic variance and heritability estimates for SGR were higher in POND ( h 2 = 0.20 ± 0.05) than in RAS ( h 2 = 0.04 ± 0.02). Genetic correlations for HW and SGR of sole reared in RAS and in POND were 0.56 ± 0.34 and 0.27 ± 0.3, respectively. The differences in heritable variation and the low genetic correlations of growth of sole between environments suggest strong genotype by environment interaction. These results are important in developing breeding programs for sole because the accuracy of selection and genetic gain for growth of sole may differ between environments. Low genetic correlations for growth between environments imply that the best genotypes in an intensive aquaculture environment are not to be necessarily the best genotypes in more natural environments such as ponds.

The objectives of the present study were to determine, for Nile tilapia of different body weights and fed to satiation, (1) the incipient dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration at which feed intake starts to level off and (2) the effect of DO on nitrogen and energy balances. Two successive experiments were conducted with two weight classes of male Nile tilapia (>200 g, Experiment 1, and 200 g continued to increase as DO increased from 2.6 to 6.0 mg L-1. The latter curve suggests that the incipient DO for fish>200 g is about 5.5 mg L-1. Fish tended to reduce the energy requirement for maintenance as DO declined. A DO reduction caused an increase in the apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC), but further declines in DO to levels below a critical level decreased ADC. The DO did not have a considerable effect on the metabolizable energy: digestible energy ratio of the diet.

It has been hypothesised that, at non-limiting water oxygen conditions, voluntary feed intake (FI) in fish is limited by the maximal physiological capacity of oxygen use (i.e. an ‘oxystatic control of FI in fish’). This implies that fish will adjust FI when fed diets differing in oxygen demand, resulting in identical oxygen consumption. Therefore, FI, digestible energy (DE) intake, energy balance and oxygen consumption were monitored at non-limiting water oxygen conditions in Nile tilapia fed diets with contrasting macronutrient composition. Diets were formulated in a 2 × 2 factorial design in order to create contrasts in oxygen demand: two ratios of digestible protein (DP):DE (‘high’v.‘low’); and a contrast in the type of non-protein energy source (‘starch’v.‘fat’). Triplicate groups of tilapia were fed each diet twice daily to satiation for 48 d. FI (g DM/kg0·8per d) was significantly lower (9·5 %) in tilapia fed the starch diets relative to the fat diets.
