Based on the theoretical approach of Subjectivity from a Historical-Cultural perspective, this study is part of a master's research in which the objective is to relate baby's play with the emergence of his/her first subjective manifestations. We seek to understand how the baby produces subjective senses in the characteristic pedagogical work with children from 0 to 3 years old. In these moments, the mediating communication expressed in the adult-baby interrelation is significant and full of possibilities to mobilize the baby's condition as a subject, which favors his/her subjective development. We This understanding allows us to overcome the dichotomy between caring and educating, so characteristic of the fragmentation of work with this population, since it is considered that, from our conception, this binomial can be exercised as a unit in the different activities and pedagogical strategies of how to play. The text presents concepts of the Theory of Subjectivity. It considers the relationship between the baby within the attentive and open dialogue in its multiple expressions in educational practice, where subjective development becomes central. Based on Qualitative Epistemology, from which the Constructive-Interpretative Methodology is derived, we highlight reflections on the unique ways babies play with music. In this research, the play simultaneously constituted a pedagogical activity and a research instrument and was strongly marked by the music produced by the researcher with her guitar. The study indicates how play can promote changes and/or developments in children's first subjective productions. Finally, we propose principles that articulate these interpretive constructions with possibilities for pedagogical work in the collective environments of daycare centers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: There is a worldwide trend of increasing rates of overweight and obesity in children under 5 years of age. Mothers' beliefs, perceptions, and attitudes towards feeding practices and obesity have direct implications on their children's health. Aim: To explore beliefs about feeding practices and childhood obesity among mothers with children under five years of age in northwestern Mexico. Methodology: Qualitative study with ethnographic approach. Using purposive sampling, nine semistructured interviews were conducted with women with an average of 12 years of education. Results: Beliefs included insecurity in assuming the role of mother, a low perception of family support, and beliefs that were not aligned with the recommendations of exclusive breastfeeding and introduction of complementary foods. In addition, these held the belief that obesity is not a problem due to the young age of their children. Conclusions: There is ambivalence between the participants' beliefs and their practices regarding feeding and childhood obesity. It is imperative to develop education and communication strategies that provide evidence-based information that is easily accessible and available to mothers to prevent nutrition problems during early childhood.

Patient navigation (PN) aims to improve timely access to healthcare by helping patients to "navigate" complex service provision landscapes. PN models have been applied in diverse healthcare settings including perinatal mental health (PMH). However, the practice models and implementation of PN programs vary widely, and their impact on engagement with PMH services has not been systematically investigated. This systematic narrative review study aimed to (1) identify and describe existing PMH PN models, (2) understand their effectiveness in improving service engagement and clinical outcomes, (3) review patient and provider perceptions, and (4) explore facilitators and barriers to program success. A systematic search of published articles/reports describing PMH PN programs/service delivery models targeting parents in the period from conception to 5 years postpartum was conducted. In total, 19 articles describing 13 programs were identified. The analysis yielded a number of commonalities and differences across program settings, target populations, and the scope of the navigator role. While there was promising evidence to support the clinical efficacy and impact on service utilization of PN programs for PMH, the current evidence base is sparse. Further research evaluating the efficacy of such services, and facilitators and barriers to their success, is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article analyzes the emotional suffering shared between parents and the baby during the perinatal period. The processes of adaptation and defense that can occur in this situation are described, as well as the consequences of these processes. The case of a baby with a severe feeding disorder is presented. The article also highlights the characteristic competencies of the baby, such as their ability to perceive and make sense of their experience, as well as their sensitivity to relational interactions. Four sources of somatoemotional overstimulation are identified: the body, the sensory environment, the caregiver's emotional state, and acquired psychoneurobiological reactivity. These sources can generate negative effects on the baby, such as stress and trauma. In addition, alterations in the co-regulation resources of receptivity and perceptivity are mentioned, as well as the two perceptual systems of the neonatal self. The text discusses shared perinatal emotional suffering in babies and how it can affect their development. It is mentioned that this suffering can lead to a mismatch between the primitive self-body and the attachment-seeking self. Furthermore, the mechanisms of anti-perception defense that the baby can activate to protect themselves from the emotional distress of the caregivers are discussed. The effects of this suffering, such as psychoneurobiological hyperreactivity and overactivation of perception regulatory mechanisms, are also mentioned. Finally, the text discusses the overadaptive behaviors that the baby can develop to protect their own emotional state. The text discusses the primary traumatic core in babies and its relationship with psychopathological manifestations. Different disorders and conditions that may be related to this traumatic core are mentioned, such as anxiety, neurosis, attention deficit, autism, depression, among others. The psychoneurobiological interaffectation and the psychic effects of perceptual disconnection are also discussed. It is concluded that perinatal emotional suffering affects all parties involved in parenting, and the importance of facilitating the expressiveness of the baby and their caregivers is highlighted. Additionally, a case of severe feeding disorder in a baby named Cristina is mentioned. The article describes the experience of a couple with their baby and their difficulty sleeping and eating. The mother had problems during pregnancy and had previously lost two babies. During the consultation, the baby cries intensely and avoids eye contact with her parents. The crying is interpreted as an expression of accumulated emotional suffering. It is suggested to allow the baby to cry and to name their emotions to help in their adaptation process. The parents use strategies to distract and calm the baby, but she continues to experience internal distress. Despite this, she continues to smile and retains her attachment longing. The mother also experiences anxiety during feeding and needs to feel accompanied. The baby's crying only reappears when faced with the bottle, indicating an association between emotional distress and feeding. The text describes the case of Cristina, a baby who shows signs of autonomy and avoids relational dependence from an early age. It is also mentioned that Cristina has difficulties sleeping and eating, which is related to her emotional distress and her tendency to avoid stressful situations. Additionally, it is mentioned that Cristina's mother suffers from postpartum depression and that the lack of emotional connection between mother and daughter can affect the baby's development. The article is about the concept of "primary traumatic core" in babies and the shared perinatal emotional suffering between parents and the baby. The connection between generalized discomfort and the sensation of gastric fullness is mentioned, as well as the disconnection of the perception of somatic discomfort. [Extracted from the article]

BIOELECTRIC impedance , *NEWBORN infants , *ADIPOSE tissues , *ELECTRIC impedance , *BODY composition - Abstract
Objective: the objective of this study was to identify the use of bioelectrical impedance in newborns (NB), as this is an easy-to-apply and non-invasive method of measurement that can be used for distinguishing fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), and total body water (TBW). Method: this was an integrative review of the literature using the PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Virtual Health Library databases to search for original articles between 2010-2020. A total of 900 articles were retrieved; after checking for duplicity and applying the eligibility criteria, 9 were further analyzed. Results: about the results, five studies used single frequency bioimpedance, with a specific population of neonates, preterm and/or full term, and different clinical conditions. Resistance was the most studied bioelectric indicator, the phase angle is little explored, and four studies investigated body composition (FFM, FM and TBW). Studies found that preterm newborns had lower amounts of TBW, FFM, and FM than term newborns, and there were differences in body composition between sex. The phase angle was lower for preterm newborns. Babies fed with high protein formulas had increases in the FFM. Conclusion: there is a need for multicenter studies to define standardized methods to be used with this public. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The present study investigated the motherhood experience of mothers of extremely preterm infants during their hospitalizations in the NICU. In particular, we sought to investigate the maternal feelings related to this context. Participants included 18 mothers whose babies were between 25 and 28 gestational weeks and weighed between 625g and 1000g. Mothers were interviewed 15 days after delivery and the responses were examined using qualitative content analysis. Three axes were developed, derived from the interviews: feelings about the NICU; feelings about the baby's manifestations; and feelings about motherhood. The findings revealed the complexity of maternal feelings in the context of the NICU. However, the mothers' narcissistic investment in their babies, which led them to communicate with them using small gestures and sensory expressions, stood out in the maternal verbalizations, which simultaneously made it possible to build a symbolic place for the infant. Parenting an offspring is a rewarding, albeit challenging task, often accompanied by high levels of stress. It is important to accurately assess the stress associated with parenting, as severe forms of stress may affect the parent‐child dyad and lead to poor child outcomes. The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Parental Stress Scale (PSS) in the Greek population. We implemented forward and back translation and conducted a pilot test. A total of 735 mothers (Mage = 34.6) with infants aged 0–12 months completed the PSS, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. The Greek PSS‐18 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's α =.83) and adequate convergent validity. Results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis revealed two underlying factors: positive aspects of parenting and negative aspects of parenting. Our data confirm the validity of the Greek version of the PSS‐18 in mothers with infants aged 0–12 months. The Greek version of the PSS‐18 could be a useful tool for professionals and researchers who are interested in perinatal period and the aspects of parenthood. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research demonstrates the central role of mother–child relationships in child socioemotional development; however, families are complex systems and the unique roles of multiple family subsystems in early infant development have received less attention. In the present study, we investigated the role of multiple family relationships (interparental, mother–infant, father–infant), during pregnancy and the first month after childbirth, in infant socioemotional functioning at 6 months. We administered semi‐structured interviews during pregnancy to assess multiple qualities of the interparental relationship. At 1 month postpartum, parents completed reports about their feelings and attitudes toward their infant to assess impaired bonding. At 6 months, parents provided reports of child socioemotional functioning. Both mother–infant and father–infant impaired bonding were uniquely associated with infant socioemotional impairment, controlling for prenatal interparental relationship quality. Additionally, multiple dimensions of the interparental relationship (i.e., poor‐quality conflict management, inadequate support for fathers, and low levels of respect toward mothers) were associated with infant socioemotional impairment controlling for parent–infant bonding. Results also demonstrated an indirect pathway, such that poor sexual quality during pregnancy was associated with fathers (but not mothers) reporting more impaired bonding with their infants, which was linked to greater infant socioemotional impairment. Results highlight the importance of understanding the broad family environment, prior to and immediately following the birth of the child, to identify at‐risk children at the earliest possible stages of intervention. In the conventional wisdom of the Enlightenment the topic of dwarfism as a medical disorder was not present. Dwarfs were sought after for and highly valued at European aristocratic and royal courts, but they stayed at the margins of social life because of their body build. The aim of this article is to discuss the first academic research connected with dwarfism on the example of King Stanislaw Leszczynki’s dwarf in Lunéville. Nicolas Ferry, known as Bébé, like other dwarfs during the trend of that time was a mascot of courtiers, up to his death at the age of 23 by the King’s side in the palace. The King, upset by the death of his prematurely aged pupil Bébé, ordered his doctors to examine the corpse. Part of the research material was sent to Paris to the Cabinet of Natural History (Cabinet d’Histoire Naturelle du Roi) of Count de Buffon, who started an examination. The case of the dwarf Bébé was described in the series Histoire naturelle... of 12 volumes in the section onquadrupeds. From the point of view of cultural controversies about dwarfism – nowadays treated as a disease in the medical model of disability – the case is an important question because it shows the beginning of the process of departing from the beliefs of the eighteenth century towards the first anatomical academic research.

- Abstract
This paper presents a fragment of a larger project, which addressed the possibilities of come to be in a sheltering institution. We proposed to perform a reading operation (Jerusalinsky & Berlink,2008) of the relationship established between infants who are living in residential shelters and their respective caregivers. We discussed the observation of two infants, with 14 and 18 months-old, sheltered in two different residential shelters in Porto Alegre (RS - Brazil). We conducted four visits to each house, in which each infant was observed in relation to their educating agent, using the Clinical Reference Indicators for Child Development (IRDIs). We also seek, from fundamental concepts of D. Winnicott’s theory, support to reflect on what has been shown in evidence in the relationship between infants and carers in a way that the conceptions of environment and (dis) continuity of care served as the basis for this reading, allowing the emergence of some notes: even emphasizing the right of continuity of care that every child has, the separation of the mother / family is not necessarily traumatic in itself. We understand, therefore, that even if they have a first mark (deprivation of the original family), there is a possibility that the baby develops satisfactorily in the context of institutional care, as long as he can establish an encounter with someone/environment available to support him, to provide an experience of continuity and to prevent that this initial suffering makes him incapable of come to be. - Abstract
At the birth of a child, the solidity of narcissistic foundations and the infantile of the parents are tested even in the ramifications of their cultural affiliations. The meeting between a baby and his parents is an opportunity for nostalgic rêveries and a source of wonder, but sometimes stumbles on the singular history of each, the construction of their couple and their many after-effects. Projections towards the baby sometimes hinder the building of early bonds and the construction of the infant's primary narcissism. The game of identifications is damaged and the baby painfully identified with a disturbing stranger. When she herself is contained by an attentive presence, the mother can sometimes regain a calming and sensual capacity; the analyst offers representations of the issues in which the partners of the dyad are caught in the grip of anxiety. This work of transforming affects into words favors this place of the third party which seeks to allow the child and his mother to rediscover a capacity for representative play associated with pleasure. The present pilot study focuses on the adaptive processes of babies who are placed during their first months of life. It used an ethological approach to explore the behavioural adjustment of 19 infants from their arrival in placement through their first 6 weeks in Residential Care (RC; France), a Foster Family (FF; Québec) or an Infant–Mother Centre (IMC; Québec). Direct observations were conducted once a week during feeding sessions. Observed behaviours were as follows: sleep–wake state, self‐soothing, burp, visual exploration, motor activity, facial and vocal expressions. Then, a Kruskal–Wallis test was conducted to examine differences in babies' adaption as a function of placement setting. Results showed that, in RC, the duration of the post‐feeding phase is the shortest. Moreover, these institutionalized babies showed the most modes of self‐protection and the fewest vocalizations. By contrast, babies placed in the IMC spent the least time in withdrawal, expressed motor activity more regularly and were never placed back in their recliner before burping. Larger differences appear comparing placement in RC and that in the IMC, the placement in FF showing intermediate results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
No professional, no team can be a caregiver if they themselves are not well supported, well "cared for", i.e. if they are not well looked after. Professional support is therefore not a luxury, but a sine qua non of quality care and psychological care. After a few reminders about practice analysis and supervision, the impact of the baby's functioning on that of professionals (an impact to be taken into account in terms of their support) is considered, before tackling the concept of intransitive demand, which is also to be considered in the work of supervision., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier Masson SAS.

The patent device named “Device for biometric identification of maternity” is a dual fingerprint scanner that provides data of mother and baby fingerprints at the very moment of birth and further guarantees the maternity of a newborn baby by generating a unique ID reference and encrypting that data with the highest level of protection. For the first time, we enrolled qualitative research that proves a baby’s identity at the very moment of birth based on the fingerprint minutiae. No one has done it until today! The realised technical solution scans, processes, stores, saves and encrypts personal data with one main purpose - to prove maternity of every newborn baby with 100% accuracy. By fingerprint scanning of both the mother and the baby’s fingerprints simultaneously at the very moment of birth, ID is generated and stored. This allays potential fear of babies being replaced. Every identity is guaranteed. By encrypting this data, the whole process is raised to the highest security and confidentiality levels in maternity wards worldwide. In each case, the fear that almost every mother has in this period is allayed as well as the question: “Is this my baby?” Even though Parenting Capacity Assessments (PCAs) are essential for child protection services to support placement decisions for maltreating families, presently no evidence‐based PCA protocols are available. In this randomized controlled trial, we tested the quality of an attachment‐based PCA protocol based on Video‐feedback Intervention to promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline (VIPP‐SD). We recruited 56 parent‐child dyads (Mage children = 3.48 years) in Dutch family residential clinics that conduct PCAs to support placement decisions. After pretest, families were randomized to receive the Regular Assessment Procedure (RAP) (n = 28), or an additional assessment based on VIPP‐SD (n = 28). An immediate post‐test and a 10‐month follow‐up were conducted. Multilevel models showed that therapists felt equally confident about their recommendations regarding child placement for both groups and that they equally often modified their initial placement recommendations. Moreover, children in the VIPP‐SD group did not show fewer behavior problems and did not experience recurring child maltreatment less often than children in the RAP group. Thus, we found no evidence that PCAs incorporating the VIPP‐SD protocol outperformed PCAs as usual. We discuss possible explanations why in the current study VIPP‐SD did not seem to add to the quality of the RAP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mother–Baby Unit research has focussed on maternal psychopathology over the course of an admission. Less is known about the baby's well‐being, the shared relationship, or the mother's recovery. In an initial sample of 45 women, we describe discharge and post‐discharge outcomes for maternal psychopathology (using maternal report and the Global Assessment of Function, GAF) and the mother–infant relationship (using the Child and Adult Relational Experimental Index, CARE Index). Three months post‐discharge, one third of women described themselves as "completely recovered," one third were experiencing significant deterioration and 17% were readmitted to inpatient care. Poorer GAF scores were associated with a clinical diagnosis of comorbid personality disorder, antenatal presence of the index illness, partner illicit substance use, maternal perception of her bond, infant social withdrawal, and child protection concern. Post‐discharge, the mother–infant relationship results were concerning. Only 17% were regarded as adequate. Improvement was observed across this period in 56% but relational deterioration occurred for 35%. Maternal and relational outcomes were weakly correlated at discharge (r² = 0.29, p = 0.07) but this was lost post‐discharge (r² = 0.03, p = 0.89). The shared relationship and infant mental health should both be targets for intervention; both during MBU admission, and post‐discharge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The authors present a parent-baby consultation follow-up beginning before the epidemic and continuing during lockdown. The management of intra-family and therapeutic bonds, as well as of parenthood, presents a challenge to the consultants during the first period and gives rise to fear that the situation may deteriorate when face to face therapeutic follow-up comes to an end. However, the bond is preserved by means of video consultations and the family shows unexpected resources and resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to explore the factor structure and psychometric properties of an adapted version of the Portuguese version of the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale for parents of infants aged 0 to 12 months (the IM-P-I). Two studies were conducted. The first study included 560 postpartum mothers and examined the factor structure and internal consistency of the IM-P-I. The second study included 295 postpartum mothers, with the goal of cross--validating the factor structure of the questionnaire and examining its internal consistency and construct validity. In both studies, the original correlated five-factor model (which included the subscales Listening with Full Attention, Emotional Awareness of the Child, Compassion for the Child, Self-Regulation in Parenting, and Nonjudgmental Acceptance of Parental Functioning) was the best-fitting model. Adequate Cronbach's alpha values were found for the total scale and for all subscales, except for the Emotional Awareness of the Child subscale. Moderate to strong negative correlations were found between the IM-P-I subscales and anxious and depressive symptomatology and emotional dysregulation. This study shows that the IM-P-I is a psychometrically adequate measure of mindful parenting in the postpartum period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess the terms of the introduction of certain foods in the diet of children of the first year of life-based on 5 Children’s Clinics in St. Petersburg, an anonymous survey was conducted among 534 mothers whose children received breast milk up to a year and older. The study showed that in most cases, mothers make their children drink water, tea, and juice in the first year of life in target dates. However, a significant number of mothers begin to introduce these liquids into the baby’s diet earlier. The first complementary foods-fruit and vegetable puree-most of the children received timely (79.8% and 81.1%, respectively). The second complementary foods (cereal porridge) in 71.5% of cases were introduced in due time and 24.5% - later than term. The third complementary foods (meat puree), as well as other protein products, which include cottage cheese paste, egg yolk, and fish puree, children in most cases received later than term. 24.9% of mothers introduced meat puree, 20.7% - cottage cheese paste, 30.0% - egg yolk and 17.9% - fish puree earlier. Only 35.5% of mothers started to give fermented milk products on time, and 46.8% later. Whole milk in its natural form was received earlier than term by 61.4% of children. Thus, water, juice, tea, fruit and vegetable puree, as well as cereal was introduced into the diet of the child in the recommended time, and meat puree, cottage cheese paste, egg yolk, dairy products, fish puree and whole milk later than the established period.

Background: The bonding process is essential to favors and/or determines the future relationship between parent and baby and influences the cognitive and social development of the child. The bonding is conditioned by a set of interrelated factors with parental and situational conditions that may assist or prevent the establishment of bonding (Pereira, 2009). Objective: Establish the relationship between the sociodemographic context (age, marital status, educational qualifications and length of relationship) and bonding parent/baby. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional study, correlational descriptive, quantitative, attended by 349 parents, aged between 19 and 55, with an average age of 31,84 (sd=6,067). To providing a reliable sample characterization the social-demographic we applied questionnaires and Bonding Scale (Figueiredo et al., 2005). Results: This study reveals that positive bonding is influenced by age (p=0,010), being higher in parents aged 30 years or less. With regard to qualifications, it was found that the smaller the educational level of the parents, the greater the bonding positive (p=0,045). On the other hand the marital status and the length of the relationship did not influence the bonding. Conclusion: Given the importance of the bonding process between parent and baby, whose involvement should exist from the beginning of pregnancy, it’s imperative that the Nurse Specialist in maternal health take responsibility to educate and stimulate the paternal bonding supporting and integrating the father in the process of adaptation to parenthood.

- Abstract
The survival of a human baby is enabled by the attachment behavioral system, as babies seek proximity, directing attachment mediator behaviors toward a figure who provides security. Reflections from the existence of a primary intersubjectivity and evidence of more refined abilities than what was known at the time in which Bowlby formulated this theory conducted us to the hypothesis that attachment is perceived before the period he proposed. We performed a case study in which we analyzed video-recordings from Marina's six months of life. Episodes of differential behavior towards a figure were selected and micro-genetically transcribed. Moreover, mediator behaviors with each of the baby's caregivers were mapped. Results suggested differential behavior towards a discriminated figure since her third month. The dialogical and cultural processes that reverberated in selecting the mother as the attachment figure were discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DAY care centers , *ADULT day care , *SPACETIME , *INFANTS , *MECHANIZATION - Abstract
The present article focuses on the temporal organization proposed in the day care Center and the ways of living the time for the baby in this space. This ethnographic research was conducted in a public daycare center in the southern Santa Catarina state. The research subjects were a group of twelve babies and four adults, two teachers in each period. The time organization proposed by the adults in the day care center was evidenced, and it is governed by the clock chronology, marked by the lightening, fragmentation and mechanization of daily actions. However, babies do not live this organization in a passive or static way. They resist and transgress the proposed time, seeking to live other relationships that are not foreseen by adults, but which are important and necessary for them. These facts indicate the need and urgency to (re) think about the organization of the time proposed in the day care center, in order to consider the experiences and rhythms of the babies who live there daily. Life begins long before birth, and early experiences in the womb, birth, and postpartum have been instrumental in the physical and emotional health of people throughout their lives. Through a bibliographical review of some of the authors who have studied this theme, it is intended to disclose the existence of pre and perinatal trauma and the importance of psychotherapy in the baby to avoid problems of mental health. In situations of pre and perinatal trauma, it is often necessary to intervene not only with the pregnant / puerperal woman, but also with the baby/child so that the child may be released from the traumatic situation, avoiding the development of pathologies that affect both in childhood and throughout his life. In Portugal there is a lack of training of health professionals to work effectively the emotional issues of newborns. This gap can represent significant consequences in the physical and emotional health of these infants because early intervention is essential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diagnostic and therapeutic advances in the Neonatology area have resulted in a significant decrease in the mortality rate of preterm newborns and, consequently, an increase in the morbidity of these babies. The concern with the evaluation of its evolution has become increasingly evident, requiring strategies to reduce the repercussion of possible compromises and to increase the quality of life of these children. This study aims to investigate about the main instrument for assessing the development and follow-up of preterm babies. A systematic search was conducted in the main databases, consulting articles and books that provide detail on studies, evaluations and instruments. It was found that developmental assessment and follow- up are performed through screening and developmental diagnosis tests that examine the most relevant aspects in the various age groups. Twenty-one evaluation instruments for preterm development and follow-up were identified, which can be divided into three categories: the comprehensive, the specifics and the neurological and neurobehavioral exams. Studies show that the Bayley Scales of Infant Development - Bayley III (BSID III) are the most widely used scales for assessing the preterm. It is a comprehensive assessment tool that points out the strengths and weaknesses as well as the baby's competencies. The scales are most indicated for early identification of risk for development, elaboration of intervention projects and to provide guidance and information to parents about the evolution of the child, whose follow-up should be continuous and systematic, carried out by an interdisciplinary team.

OBJECTIVES: In infants, there is a high incidence of emergence agitation (EA) after sevoflurane (Sev) anesthesia. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that dexmedetomidine (Dex) administration would reduce the incidence and severity of EA after Sev-based anesthesia in infants undergoing palatoplasty. METHODS: A prospective randomized clinical trial was conducted with 70 patients undergoing palatoplasty, aged 10-14 months. Infants were randomly allocated into two groups: Dex (n = 35) and saline (n = 35). In the Dex group, Dex (6 µg/kg/h) was administered approximately 10 min before the end of the surgery for 10 min, followed by 0.4 µg/kg/h until 5 min after extubation. In the saline group, an equivalent amount of saline was administered in a similar manner. After the surgery, patients were transferred to the postanesthetic care unit (PACU). The infant's behavior and pain were assessed with scoring system for EA (5-point rating scale) and pain scale (PS; 10-point rating scale), respectively. EA and PS were estimated at six time points (after extubation, leaving the operating room, 0, 30, 60, and 120 min after arrival in PACU). RESULTS: EA and PS scores were significantly lower in the Dex group than in the saline group from extubation to 120 min after arrival in PACU. CONCLUSIONS: Dex administration has the advantage of a reduced EA and PS without any adverse effects. Dex provided satisfactory recovery in infants undergoing palatoplasty.

The reflections presented in the developed study approach the themes of art and culture, in the context of the day care center from an interdisciplinary dialogue between Pedagogy and the Sociology of Childhood. The objective of the investigation is to know the artistic-cultural and aesthetic experiences for and with the babies in the day care spaces, reflecting on the pedagogical propositions, focusing on the artistic-cultural and aesthetic experiences present, as they are presented and enjoyed by babies in the institution. The subjects of the investigation were 42 babies under 2 years old, whose experiences were monitored, involving their relationships with teachers, other children and with the cultural artifacts available. In order to seek indicative answers for this objective, the study was developed from an ethnographic research, in a day care center in the city of Blumenau - Santa Catarina. For the data collection, participant observation was used as a technique for the first proximity and to investigate the babies. The instruments adopted were the field diary, the cell phone for use in capturing images and short film records, both being the main generators of the analyzed data. From a very fruitful approach in the interdisciplinary theoretical field, a relevant amount of constructed data is analyzed, which gave rise to four categories: Art and Nature: Genuine Languages; Time and Rhythm: Autonomy Regulation; Sounds and Tones: Tastes of Tastes Space and Ambience: Arrangements of Sensations. Each of these categories is named and analyzed in terms of both practices and representations. The final considerations demonstrate that the pedagogical propositions which emphasize the artistic-cultural fruibility experienced in the day care center reveal that the aesthetic experience happens to the baby in a disinterested way, that is, in the relationship mediated by subjectivity, and not by imposition and control, as well as, inexhaustible opening of possibility to feel what this experience repeatedly causes in the baby. Since, assuring paths, times and peculiar modes of reception, perception and appreciation for fruition. And finally, it is worth thinking from the analyzed categories that babies are not only contemplative subjects in the face of culture and art, but with creative care and sensitivity displayed by the body, they understand, live and enjoy the world.

ABSTRACT Infants coming into early childhood education services is a growing phenomenon that has captured greater interest from researchers. However, moving beyond the focus on maternal separation, the field still needs to advance regarding the notion of transition as a process of contextual intertwining between home and early education services. One of the dimensions of transition relates to the multiple temporal, cultural, and socially circumscribed dimensions that come to establish a new everyday life. Based on a cultural-historical approach, we discuss the transition process of a focal infant. From a thematic selection centered on sleeping routines, we address the relational negotiation against the (a)synchrony of times, routines, and rhythms that materialize in the institution’s present time. Among the different elements, the thematic selection will be focused on sleep routines.
