Colony collapse disorder (CCD) has caused widespread death of honeybees, but the exact causes are not understood. Many scientists agree that pathogenic threats most likely contribute to CCD. Due to the integral ecosystem role bees fulfill, it is important to understand how honeybees respond immunologically to different factors to better inform practices to combat CCD. Quantifying the immunological cost of two different beekeeping approaches allows us to better understand how beekeeping practices affect bees' susceptibility to CCD. Within colonies, a plastic frame foundation provides structural support for the creation of honeycomb. Production of beeswax is energetically costly for colonies to produce, possibly causing energetic stress that may affect the colony's ability to fight pathogens. Two colonies were maintained, one with an internal plastic foundation on their frames and one without. We collected bees from each colony and extracted their hemolymph to quantify both their basal and activated immunological protein levels. Protein levels were higher in bees from the no foundation colony. Prophenoloxidase (PPO) activity trended toward higher levels in the no foundation colony, although this was not statistically significant. This suggests that lack of foundation causes the bees to have a higher protein turnover based on their energetic requirements, increasing their ability to fight off immunological threats. Apiculture provides better livelihoods for about 144,000 men, women and youth in Kenya. However, various challenges and barriers are available that prevent the industry from flourishing. One of these challenges is the low hive colonization rate reported by Kenyan beekeepers, who mainly depend on swarm catching to increase colony numbers within their apiaries. Many different traditional plants are used to attract bee swarms, although they have not been tested and compared scientifically with the most used and cost‐effective bait in Africa, the beeswax, for improving swarm catches. To fill this knowledge gap, an ethnobotanical survey was carried out in Kenya to gain an in‐depth understanding of traditional apicultural practices used for hive baiting to attract swarms. Additionally, the volatile composition of traditional plants used as swarm lures was examined using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and their effectiveness in catching swarms was evaluated in comparison to beeswax in the field. The survey results revealed that Ocimum kilimandscharicum, Cymbopogon nardus and Elaeodendron buchananii are the three commonly used traditional plants for baiting, chosen based on their aroma, abundance, ease of processing and durability. Notably, the volatiles emitted by O. kilimandscharicum plus beeswax attracted significantly two and half‐fold more bee swarms than the control (beeswax alone), whereas those of E. buchananii were the least attractive and similar to those of the control. These discrepancies may be partly due to the presence of small amounts of geraniol and citral in the essential oils of O. kilimandscharicum, which are characteristic compounds of the Nasonov gland pheromone from workers honey bees known to attract bee swarms. This paper analyzed the effects of adding rice bran wax (RW) and beeswax (BW) to rapeseed oil as a deep-frying medium and the quality parameters of potato fries, including acrylamide contamination. It was found that the addition of RW and BW caused an increase in the oil's acidity. However, oil deterioration based on peroxide values and fatty acid profiles did not differ very much from the oil without waxes. The study showed that the addition of rice bran wax at the level of 2.5 g/L of rapeseed oil was able to significantly decrease oil uptake in potato fries. The addition of waxes did not influence the color parameters in the first frying cycle; however, changes were observed later. The browning index indicated that 10 g of BW per liter may darken fries in comparison to rapeseed oil without additives. The co‐pyrolysis behavior of low‐grade coal with two different feedstocks (beeswax and petroleum wax) at different compositions (w/w) [(75:25), (50:50), (25:75)] is investigated by using a thermogravimetric (TG) analyzer under the non‐isothermal condition at a constant heating rate of 20°C/min from an ambient temperature to 900°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The kinetic and thermodynamic analysis for the thermal decomposition of the sample parameters was carried out by applying the model fitting Coats–Redfern method to the thermogravimetry data of different feedstocks. The activation energy of thermal degradation of coal is found to be 55.8 kJ/mole. A decrease in activation energy is observed by the addition of 25% and 50% waxes in the blended sample and the blended sample with 25% wax and 75% coal has the lowest activation energy. The activation energy for coal‐beeswax blend (75:25) is 35.718 KJ/mol, but it is 34.237 KJ/mol for coal‐petroleum wax blend (75:25). The value of ∆H decreases by the addition of waxes and follows the order (Coal: Feedstock) {(75:25) < (50:50) < (25:75)}, while that of value of ∆S increases by the addition of waxes and follows the order {(75:25) > (50:50) > (25:75)}. However, the value of ΔG does not significantly shift as the blend ratio of the feedstocks is altered. The addition of both feedstocks with the coal sample showed some degree of synergy. The result illustrates that the co‐pyrolysis of coal with wax be energy economical than individual pyrolysis and this study would give precious scope to design a more efficient conversion system. The aims of this study were to prepare butter and honey flavoured tiger nut oil oleogels with beeswax oleogelator and to compare them with the unflavoured control sample. The oleogels prepared with 10 wt% beeswax and 0.5 wt% of each flavour addition were analysed for main physicochemical, thermal, and structural properties. In addition, a trained panel described the samples with 11 sensory descriptive (hardness, spreadability, roasted, liquefaction, rancid, waxy, nutty, butter, honey, cooling, and mouth coating) terms. It was found that the oleogels melt around 52 °C and included β′ type polymorphs. The sensory data proved that the samples were quite well spreadable and had enough hardness to stay as solid-fat samples at room temperature. Further, addition of butter and honey flavours masked the waxy attribute. In conclusion, flavoured tiger nut oil-beeswax oleogels were new and successful products, and future studies with food applications are suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to use beeswax, a readily available and cost-effective organic material, as a novel phase change material (PCM) within blends of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene (SEBS). LDPE and SEBS act as support materials to prevent beeswax leakage. The physicochemical properties of new blended phase change materials (B-PCM) were determined using an X-ray diffractometer and an infrared spectrometer, confirming the absence of a chemical reaction within the materials. A scanning electron microscope was used for microstructural analysis, indicating that the interconnection of the structure allowed better thermal conductivity. Thermal gravimetric analysis revealed enhanced thermal stability for the B-PCM when combined with SEBS, especially within its operating temperature range. Analysis of phase change temperature and latent heat with differential scanning calorimetry showed no major difference in the melting point of the various PCM blends created. During the melting/solidification process, the B-PCMs possess excellent performance as characterized by W70/P30 (112.45 J.g−1) > W70/P20/S10 (94.28 J.g−1) > W70/P10/S20 (96.21 J.g−1) of latent heat storage. Additionally, the blends tend to reduce supercooling compared to pure beeswax. During heating and cooling cycles, the B-PCM exhibited minimal leakage and degradation, especially in blends containing SEBS. In comparison to the rapid temperature drop observed during the cooling process of W70/P30, the temperature decline of W70/P30 was slower and longer, as demonstrated by infrared thermography. The addition of LDPE to the PCM reduced melting time, indicating an improvement in the thermal energy storage reaction time to the demand. According to the obtained findings, increasing the SEBS concentration in the composite increased the thermal stability of the resulting PCM blends significantly. Despite the challenges mentioned earlier, SEBS proved to be an effective encapsulating material for beeswax, whereas LDPE served well as a supporting material. Leak tests were performed to find the ideal mass ratio, and weight loss was analyzed after multiple cycles of cooling and heating at 70 °C. The morphology, thermal characteristics, and chemical composition of the beeswax/LDPE/SEBS composite were all examined. AbstractThe present study aims to explore the effect of cocoa butter on the physicochemical properties of novel oleogels formulated using moringa seed oil and beeswax. The oleogel formulations were prepared by adding 1%, 3%, 5%, and 10% w/w of cocoa butter. The microscopic study, FTIR spectra, texture profiling, and XRD analysis were used to characterize crystal types’ crystal structure, hardness, melting, and crystallization behaviors. These studies showed that cocoa butter can alter the structural parameters of the beeswax crystals. The in vitro drug release study anticipated that the diffusion of Linezolid molecules slowed down, and the release process was mainly based on Fickian-mediated diffusion. Bananas are one of the most popular fruits, and their production generates significant agricultural waste. Banana pseudostems, a by-product of the banana industry, are being investigated as a renewable and biodegradable alternative to synthetic food packaging materials. However, these pseudostems have the potential to harbor harmful bacteria due to their natural fiber composition. Therefore, this study analyzes the effect of beeswax coating on the microbial communities in banana pseudostems. The microbial community is analyzed through a metagenomics approach that targets the 16S rRNA gene of the Saba banana (Musa × paradisiaca) pseudostem. Two experimental conditions were considered: pseudostem with beeswax coating and pseudostem without beeswax coating. The findings indicate that the microbial communities in all samples are primarily composed of the phyla Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Firmicutes. The dominant species found in uncoated banana pseudostem is Pantoea sp. At-9b, Escherichia coli, Synechococcus sp. JA-3-3-Ab, Pantoea vagans, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The dominant species found in beeswax-coated banana pseudostem is Synechococcus sp. JA-3-3-Ab, Pseudanabaena sp. PCC 7367, Chroococcidiopsis thermalis, Priestia megaterium, and Ammonifex degensii. The Chao1, Shannon, Simpson, and Equitability indices indicate that the species richness, diversity, and evenness in the uncoated banana pseudostem are higher than in the beeswax-coated banana pseudostem. The degree of similarity between bacterial populations found in uncoated banana pseudostem and beeswax-coated banana pseudostem is around 53.9%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Solid fats are critical to obtaining a wide range of food texture and quality characteristics, but their consumption is strongly associated with higher cardiovascular disease risks. Structuring unsaturated oils with natural waxes into oleogels (OG) is an innovative solution to develop fat mimics with a healthier profile. RESULTS: Soy wax (SW), beeswax (BW) and carnauba wax (CW), have been used in binary mixtures of waxes, aiming to understand their interactions and influence on OG quality properties and microstructural characteristics. In the present study, OGs were produced using binary wax mixtures and analyzed for texture, color, smoke point, microstructure, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). Wax combinations led to antagonistic (mixtures with SW) and synergistic interactions (BW/CW) based on their mechanical properties. At the microstructural level BW/CW blends showed a reduction in crystal size and with a more compact structure. XRD and FTIR spectra revealed a packing of orthorhombic perpendicular subcell for most OGs, whereas SW produced samples with an arrangement with β' crystals, characteristic of edible solid fats. Additionally, when compared to commercial beef fat, BW/CW mixtures showed similar quality attributes indicating that they could act as fat mimic. CONCLUSION: The combined analysis of microstructure, spectroscopic and mechanical properties enhanced the understanding of how the nature of the interactions between waxes and lipid phases impact in the final quality of the structured oils. This study assessed the nutritional profile of camellia oil through its fatty acid composition, highlighting its high oleic acid content (81.4%), followed by linoleic (7.99%) and palmitic acids (7.74%), demonstrating its excellence as an edible oil source. The impact of beeswax (BW) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on camellia oil oleogels was investigated, revealing that increasing BW or GML concentrations enhanced hardness and springiness, with 10% BW oleogel exhibiting the highest hardness and springiness. FTIR results suggested that the structure of the oleogels was formed by interactions between molecules without altering the chemical composition. In biscuits, 10% BW oleogel provided superior crispness, expansion ratio, texture, and taste, whereas GML imparted a distinct odor. In sausages, no significant differences were observed in color, water retention, and pH between the control and replacement groups; however, the BW group scored higher than the GML group in the sensory evaluation. High concentrations of carnauba waxes (CRWs) that can compromise organoleptic properties are required to create self‐sustained and functional oleogels. The weak physical properties and stability of 4% w/w CRW–rice bran oil (RBO) oleogel were addressed by substituting CRW with beeswax (BW) in different weight ratios. The texture profile analyzer revealed that substituting only 10% (weight ratio) of CRW with BW improved the hardness compared to the mono‐CRW oleogel. The hardness of binary oleogels increased gradually as the proportion of BW increased. At a BW ratio of 70% or more, the hardness was three times higher than that of mono‐BW oleogel. Rheology analysis showed the same trend as the large deformation test; however, the hardest binary oleogels had lower critical strain and yield point compared to the mono‐wax oleogels, implying that they are more prone to lose their structure upon applied stress. Nevertheless, nearly all binary mixtures (except for 10%BW90%CRW) showed oil‐binding capacities above 99%, suggesting improved nucleation and crystallization process. Polarized light microscopy showed the coexistence of BW and CRW crystals and changes in the size and arrangement of wax crystals upon proportional changes of the two waxes. X‐ray diffraction confirmed no differences in the peaks' location, and all oleogels had β′ polymorphism. Differential scanning calorimetry showed eutectic melting behavior in some binary blends. Oxidation stability in the binary wax oleogels improved as compared to the mono‐wax oleogel and bulk RBO. BW and CRW mixtures have promising oil‐structuring abilities and have various properties at different ratios that have the potential to be used as solid fat substitutes. Practical Application: As a trending green oil‐structuring technology, oleogelation has shown great potential to reduce saturated fats in food systems. The current research provides valuable fundamental information on the strong synergistic interactions between beeswax and carnauba wax that have the potential to be used as solid fat substitutes created with a much lower total concentration of the required wax. This will help create wax oleogels with better organoleptic properties and less negative waxy mouthfeel. Such knowledge could prove beneficial for the development of healthy products that have potential applications in meat, bakery, dairy, pharmaceutical, as well as cosmetic industries. Cachexia is associated with various diseases, such as heart disease, infectious disease, and cancer. In particular, cancer‐associated cachexia (CAC) accounts for more than 20% of mortality in cancer patients worldwide. Adipose tissue in CAC is characterized by adipocyte atrophy, mainly due to excessively increased lipolysis and impairment of adipogenesis. CAC is well known for the loss of skeletal muscle mass and/or fat mass. CAC induces severe metabolic alterations, including protein, lipid, and carbohydrate metabolism. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of bee wax (Apis mellifera L. 1758) (BW) extract on adipogenesis, lipolysis, and mitochondrial oxygen consumption through white adipocytes, 3T3‐L1. To achieve this study, cancer‐associated cachexia condition was established by incubation of 3T3‐L1 with colon cancer cell line CT26 cultured media. BW extract recovered the reduced adipogenesis under cachectic conditions in CT26 media. Treatment of BW showed increasing lipid accumulation as well as adipogenic gene expression and its target gene during adipogenesis. The administration of BW to adipocytes could decrease lipolysis. Also, BW could significantly downregulated the mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation‐related genes, oxygen consumption rate, and extracellular acidification rate. Our results suggest that BW could improve metabolic disorders such as CAC through the activation of adipogenesis and inhibition of lipolysis in adipocytes, although we need further validation in vivo CAC model to check the effects of BW extract. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) and microfluidic thread-based analytical devices (μTADs) have recently been introduced as a new class of on-site monitoring devices. Creating hydrophilic channels with hydrophobic barriers on papers/threads produces μPADs/μTADs. Fabrication is a crucial step in creating durable μPADs/μTADs that can withstand various liquids and impact the device's performance. Fabrication materials with distinct physicochemical properties allow microfluidic systems with sophisticated functions to be customized for specific applications. We present flexible and low-cost fabrication methods for μPAD and μTAD platforms. Platform designs and fabrications were implemented using a trial-and-error method for various designs with varying parameters. All production methods presented in the method section were used in |PAD production. For comparison studies, only the dipping method was used in μTAD production due to its ease of application. In this study, we tried to reveal the strengths and weaknesses of the production techniques and the resulting microfluidic platforms. A leaching test was performed with water solutions containing red ink. The compatibility of the hydrophobic walls of the platforms was tested with several solvents (isopropanol, methanol, and acetone), deionized (DI) water, and phosphate buffer solution PBS and compared. Patterning paper with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), white glue, alkyl ketene dimer (AKD), beeswax, and paraffin are much more flexible and simpler than traditional photoresist-based fabrications. The advantages and disadvantages of fabrication techniques; solvent resistance and wicking behaviors of platforms were discussed in the last part. The fabricated microfluidic platforms can be functionalized and used in many areas where analytical tests are applied. Studies on diversifying channel geometries and increasing resolution need to be continued. It should be investigated which devices can be used to obtain qualitative and quantitative results. Yellow or sour passion fruit is a climacteric fruit with a high rate of respiration and ethylene production, and postharvest technology is needed to extend its shelf life. This study investigated the properties of a biocomposite film with chitosan (CH) incorporated with beeswax (BW) and graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles for use as an edible coating to extend the shelf life of yellow passion fruit at 22 °C and 70% RH for eight days. CH films associated with BW showed lower water vapor permeability (WVP) than films with CH alone. However, adding GO to the CH + BW biopolymer matrix improved the WVP, decreased the solubility (12.8%), and increased the opacity of the film by 9% compared to those of the CH film. Fruits coated with CH + BW or CH + BW + GO exhibited a reduction in respiration rate, a slower ripening process by approximately 3 days, and a significant decrease in weight loss. This also resulted in a higher soluble solids content and increased antioxidative capacity of the pulp. The incorporation of GO into the CH + BW matrix resulted in a more pronounced delay of fruit ripening, as evidenced by the lower depigmentation of the peel at eight days, with a lightness approximately 10.7% lower at 54.92, a chroma value 16.5% lower at 49.33, a hue angle 7.2% higher at 92.56, a soluble solid (SS) content 16.7% higher at 11.32°Brix, and an acidity 31.9% higher at 4.18% compared to the control. Propolis is a resinous and complex bee product containing resin derived from plants, beeswax, pollen and other minor constituents. The present study aimed to determine the parameters of the gross composition of propolis collected by nine stingless bee species from eight different Brazilian localities. The moisture content varied depending on the bee species and localities. Wax content enables us to distinguish between samples of Melipona and Scaptotrigona, samples of the former containing considerably less wax than samples of the latter genus. The ash content has an inverse trend, with samples of Melipona and Scaptotrigona having high and low ash content, respectively. The results indicated that Melipona species produce geopropolis (propolis containing aggregated soil material), while Scaptotrigona produces propolis devoid of soil, with the exception of S. tubiba. Most Melipona species collected sediments with high clay content. The size and color of ash crystals varied, mostly according to the locality of the meliponaries, although differences were observed between samples of the same species, growing in the same meliponary. Mineralogical analysis was relevant to determine that M. flavolineata from North Brazil aggregates river-bed soil sediments to the geopropolis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to investigate the utilization of clove bud oil as fat-soluble antioxidants for retarding lipid oxidation in organogels by structuring canola oil with beeswax at 5, 7.5, and 10% concentration under accelerated oxidation condition. Oil binding capacity and viscoelastic properties were increased with beeswax content, but were not nearly affected by the addition of clove bud oil. Organogel loaded with clove bud oil were found to be more effective in retarding lipid oxidation in high beeswax content systems, particularly evident in 10% beeswax samples. The addition of clove bud oil resulted in low levels of hyeoperxide and MDA, and protected against texture and color deterioration during the storage period. Additionally, the Pearson correlation between lipid oxidation indices and parameters of texture and color has been found to exhibit a limited association, with the exception of the a* and b* values, which show a strong correlation. Natural wax gelators have different compositions of compounds (hydrocarbons, wax esters, free fatty alcohols, and free fatty acids), which results in oleogels with varying properties. To maintain a consistent composition, the individual components can be added to the original wax gelator. The content of hydrocarbons and wax esters greatly affects the structuring process of liquid edible oils with waxes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility of modifying the properties of beeswax as a gelling agent by adding hydrocarbons or monoesters to obtain oleogels with specific properties. Various tests were conducted to assess the changes in the oleogel properties, such as color, microstructure, oil-binding capacity, thermal and textural properties. The research results have shown that the addition of the studied fractions has led to a significant change in all properties of oleogels. The initial size of oleogel crystals (7.29 ± 1.80 μm) changed after adding fractions, varying from 5.28 μm to 12.58 μm with hydrocarbons and from 9.95 μm to 30.41 μm with wax esters. The addition of 30%–50% hydrocarbons decreased the ability of the oleogels to bind oil and made them less firm compared to samples with 10%–20% hydrocarbons. Adding 10%–20% monoesters increased the firmness of the oleogels, but this indicator decreased when their content was increased to 50%. The obtained data indicate that hydrocarbons and wax esters can be used for targeted correction of the gelling properties of beeswax.

The sugar palm fruit (Arenga pinnata Merr.) has a great potential to be widely used in food industries due to its galactomannan that is able to form stable gels at high temperatures and produce excellent film properties. This study aimed to determine the optimum formula of edible films made from sugar palm fruit blended with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), beeswax, and glycerol, and then used them as food packaging. The independent variables included CMC concentration was 2–4% (w/v), beeswax concentration was 0.5–2% (w/v) and glycerol concentration was 1–2% (v/v). Sugar palm fruit 10 g and 100 mL of distilled water were set as fixed variables. The quality of the films was observed including thickness, heat sealability, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and solubility. The optimum formula was achieved as follows: 3.11% (w/v) CMC, 2.00% (w/v) beeswax, and 1.00% (v/v) glycerol. The optimum formula of edible film was thickness of 0.15 mm, heat sealability of 115.51 N/m, WVTR value of 2.86 g/m2/h, and solubility of 75.61%. Based on the characteristics of dissolution time test showed that the edible pouch took 2.5 min to dissolved.

No maximum residue limits in honey have been legislated in the EU for antimicrobial substances such as sulphonamides, and they are not permitted, therefore, for treating honey bees unless in a cascade system. Since sulphonamides are used illegally in apiculture to treat foulbrood, their residues can be found in honey and other apiculture products, including beeswax. The study aimed to assess the contamination of honey from beeswax containing residues of 10 sulphonamides (sulphadimethoxine (SDM), sulphadoxine (SDX), sulphamonomethoxine (SMM), sulphamethoxazole (SMX), sulphameter (SMT), sulphamethazine (SMZ), sulphamerazine (SMR), sulphadiazine (SDA), sulphathiazole (STZ) and sulphacetamide (SCA)).

Using an optimized ratio of Beeswax emulsion blended with Neat’s-foot oil in the form of oleogel for the making of crunch leather was investigated in this study. The chemical characterizations such as FTIR, dynamic light scattering, and particle size analysis, of the experimental emulsion were carried out. The experimental leathers undergo various tests such as contact angle measurements, optical microscopy imaging, color measurement, light fastness, fastness to dry and wet rub, tensile, tear strength, and elongation at break. The experimental leathers were showing better results than the control leathers. The present work focuses on the finishing of leather, and the interaction of oil and wax oleogel with leather which approaches a sustainable and eco-friendly process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Honeybees are insects very sensitive to environmental pollution and at the same time very good indicators of the pollution levels for certain types of pollutants. The morphology and ethology of these insects make them perfect vectors for dust and substances, including heavy metals produced by anthropic activities or naturally generated and deposited on foraged flora. When bees are raised to produce foods such as honey and pollen, they can easily transfer pollutants collected from contaminated flower affecting the quality of these products. However, depending on geographical location of the apiaries and their distance from pollution sources, the risk to contaminate bee products can be higher or lower requiring deep investigations. In this study, two apiaries were built near ground transport infrastructures and used as monitoring stations for investigating heavy metal presence in beehive products such as bee wax, pollen, and honey. Another apiary was placed between these two locations at a distance of 500 m from each one and used as central node to asses possible diffusion trends. Parallel, air quality was monitored in the proximity of each apiary to verify the air pollution of the environments close to these sites. The results of the study suggest that the presence of the highway and the train station affected the levels of heavy metal presence in the apiary products. Air quality near apiaries was also negatively affected by ground transport, especially in proximity of the highway. Wax resulted significantly more polluted in the apiary close to train station with elements such as Al, Zn, and Ni, while honey and pollen were significantly more polluted in the proximity of the highway with elements such as Al, Fe, Cu, and Zn. Honey was the product suffering less the contamination by heavy metals while pollen was the worse. In conclusion, the presence of transportation nodes determined a higher accumulation of heavy metals in beehive products respect the apiary placed in between, suggesting to pay particular attention in the site selection for the placement of apiaries to protect both bees and human health. Purpose: The research purpose is to diagnose the market for beeswax quality analyses in Poland and to develop assumptions for the business model for the commercialization of the WAXO beeswax quality analyzer. Design/methodology/approach: The market analysis was conducted using Computer Assisted Self Interviewing (CASI). The study was conducted among randomly selected 124 respondents in beekeeping throughout the country. Most answered questions on behalf of beekeeping groups or associations, indicating how many members they had. Based on these data, it was determined that the interview results were representative of 2226 respondents. Assumptions for the business model were developed using the Business Model Canvas methodology about: customer segmentation, value proposition, channels, customer relationships, revenue structure, key activities, key resources, key partners, cost structure. Findings: A business model was developed based on which the commercialization of the WAXO device should be carried out. Practical implications: The conducted research allowed for the formulation of conclusions along with the presentation of operational initiatives necessary to introduce the device to the market and further commercialize it. Social implications: The invention of a beeswax quality analyzer protects bee colonies and the natural environment by changing the awareness of the beekeeping community and taking steps to change the applicable legislation. The presented recommendations support the university authorities in making decisions regarding the commercialization strategy of WAXO and the selection of operational solutions necessary to introduce it to the market, production, sales, and customer service. In the present study, tests were carried out on composite samples on a polylactide matrix containing 25% by weight of mineral filler in the form of diatomaceous earth, base, and silanized with GPTMOS (3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane), OTES (n-octyltriethoxysilane), and MTMOS (methyltrimethoxysilane) silanes. The addition of two types of waxes, synthetic polyamide wax and natural beeswax, were used as a factor to increase the rheological properties of the composites. The obtained samples were characterized in terms of the effect of filler silanization on the degradation rate of the composites. The tests were conducted under different conditioning conditions, i.e., after exposure to strong UV radiation for 250 and 500 h, and under natural sunlight for 21 days. The conditioning carried out under natural conditions showed that the modified samples exhibit up to twice the degradation rate of pure polylactide. The addition of synthetic wax to the composites increases the tendency to agglomerate diatomaceous earth, while natural wax has a positive effect on filler dispersion. For composites modified with GPTMOS and OTES silanes, it was noted that the addition of natural wax inhibited the degree of surface degradation, compared to the addition of synthetic wax, while the addition of MTMOS silane caused the opposite effect and samples with natural wax degraded more strongly. In this study, surface changes between American walnut (Juglans nigra L.) wood and modified beeswaxes were investigated. A control group was established, and various beeswax mixtures [coconut oil (coconut oil + beeswax mixture), linseed oil (linseed oil and beeswax mixture), and protective oil (olive oil + beeswax mixture)] were individually applied to wooden surfaces using a brush. Subsequently, color parameters (a*, C*, b*, L*, and ho), whiteness index (WI*), and gloss properties were examined. The obtained measurement results were compared with each other. According to the results obtained, modified beeswax types were significantly identified for all tests through variance analysis. When all modified beeswaxes were applied to the wood material surfaces, reductions were noted in the b*, L*, C*, and ho values, whereas increments were observed in the a* values. The ΔE* values were found to be 18.37 for olive oil + beeswax, 18.91 for flaxseed oil + beeswax, and 15.69 for coconut oil + beeswax. Furthermore, a decrease in WI* values was observed in both directions with the application of all modified beeswaxes. When it comes to solar thermal power systems, a latent heat energy storage unit is one possible solution to the imbalance in supply and demand. On a shell‐tube type heat storage system, computational and experimental research was done to determine how to charge a heat storage system using honeybee wax‐biodegradable phase change material. This paper examines the impact of single, double, and triple inner heat transfer fluid tubes on the melting properties of bee wax in relation to vertical and horizontal eccentricity. Through the experimental examination of a lab‐scale prototype, the computational model was verified. A computational model was used to investigate the impact of eccentricity on different configurations for the melting process. Utilizing multiple tubes significantly shortened the charging time, according to the system analysis. In a vertically downward direction, melting time reduced as eccentricity increased. Compared to the single tube concentric case, the maximum melting time reduction for the single‐, double‐, and triple‐tube cases was 63.7%, 67.0%, and 68.34%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Beeswax is known for its ability to retain pesticides for a long time, and the progressive accumulation of pesticides in wax has had adverse health effects on bees. This study aimed to determine the residue levels of pesticides in Brazilian beeswax and assess the health risk to bees due to exposure to these pesticides using hazard quotient calculation. Nineteen samples collected from different regions from São Paulo State, Brazil, were analyzed for the presence of 160 compounds, including 17 metabolites. A modified QuEChERS approach was used for sample preparation followed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS) analysis. The method validation parameters followed the requirements established by the EU SANTE 11813/2017 guideline. In 90% of the samples, one or more pesticide residues were found; among them, the most frequently found pesticides were chlorpyrifos and permethrin, which were present in 74% and 79% of the samples and had maximum levels of 18.6 ng g−1 and 72 ng g−1, respectively. The hazard quotient estimate was determined considering the acute lethal dose (LD50) per contact for each pesticide residue in beeswaxes. Thus, it has been shown that exposure to chlorpyrifos and permethrin represents an elevated risk for the health of bees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on the studies carried out on engraved inscriptions of the Deposition from the Cross by Benedetto Antelami (1150–1230), a relief sculpture conserved in the Cathedral of Parma (Italy). The inscriptions between the characters show residues of colored material in alternating red- and dark-colored stripes. The purpose of this specific investigation was to identify the materials (pigments and organic binders) used for the polychromy that are still present on the relief sculpture. Seven microsamples were taken to carry out laboratory analyses. In red-colored letters, mercury, and sulfur, constituents of the cinnabar (or vermilion) pigment were easily identified by SEM-EDS. This result is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. In the dark letters, carbon, iron, and lead are observed. The presence of materials containing metals is compatible with a mastic encrustation technique. FT-IR, Raman, and XRD techniques clearly detect beeswax, which was probably used as a polishing material. Amino acids and lipids that are typical of eggs have been identified by means of GC-MS investigations, suggesting their use as organic components of the mastic encrustation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of organic solvents considerably widens the possibilities for the conservation treatment of historic beeswax artifacts, e.g. the choice of effective cleaning methods, adhesives, consolidants, and varnishes. However, their use should always be considered carefully, since most of them dissolve at least some components of the original material. In an attempt to help conservators make well-informed decisions in this respect, the interactions of selected organic solvents with beeswax under various conditions were studied. Besides the importance of solvent type, the most carefully studied aspects were the effect of temperature, exposure duration, and the relative amount of solvent used. The surface action of the solvents on beeswax was monitored by optical microscopy, and the dissolved fraction of the individual components of beeswax was measured both quantitatively, using gravimetry, and qualitatively, using the GC-MS method. It was confirmed that all of the selected organic solvents dissolve beeswax to a certain extent. The authors believe, however, that by optimizing working conditions, the use of some of these solvents can be relatively safe and justifiable in many situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to obtain a biodegradable film based on polyvinyl alcohol with reduced water vapor permeability. The hydrophobic character of the films was achieved by incorporating beeswax, vegetable bio-surfactant, citric acid as a cross-linking agent, and glycerol to provide elasticity, along with the application of thermal treatment. Water vapor permeability was determined gravimetrically. The results indicated that all films produced had lower water vapor permeability compared to unmodified or untreated polyvinyl alcohol films. The barrier to water vapor varied directly with the mass of beeswax used, and the homogeneous dispersion of beeswax in the polyvinyl alcohol matrix was essential for achieving an efficient hydrophobic film. The best performing-material exhibited a water vapor permeability 5.15 times lower than that of the neat polyvinyl alcohol and 15 times higher than that of polyethylene. Considering the fact that the water vapor barrier property of neat polyvinyl alcohol was 78 times lower than that of polyethylene, the combination of beeswax, citric acid, and vegetable bio-surfactant—along with thermal treatment—can be a viable solution to reduce the hygroscopicity of polyvinyl alcohol-based films. We extracted pollen from historical honeycomb specimens of beeswax to highlight the potential of beeswax as a source for palynological studies. The pollen composition was explored as a proxy for honeybee foraging in the past. Additionally, we wanted to illuminate the potential of the palynological analysis to provenance the specimens. Danish honeycomb samples from the Natural History Museum of Denmark, dating from the late 19th, early twentieth century were processed and analysed for pollen identification. We used Ellenberg values to represent functional traits for the identified taxa and applied these as explanatory variables to study the variation in foraging environment and plant preference of the honeybees. Our results indicate variations of an agricultural landscape, with bees foraging on plants that are high in nutritional value. We found that information gained from palynological analysis of museum samples may be useful in illuminating details of historical apiology. In this study, a methodology for synthesizing oleogels based on linseed oil and emulsifiers, such as beeswax and Tween 20 and Tween 80, was developed. Linseed oil served as the main oil phase, while beeswax acted as a gelling and emulsifying agent. Tween compounds are non-ionic surfactants composed of hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts, allowing for the formation of a stable system with promising properties. Surface wetting analysis of the obtained oleogels, FT-IR spectroscopy, and determination of relative and absolute humidity over time, as well as optical microscope analysis and rheological analysis of the obtained oleogels, were conducted as part of the research. The results indicate that increasing the amount of Tween 20 decreases the hydrophilicity of the oleogel, while Tween 80 exhibits the opposite effect. Surface energy analysis suggests that a higher content of Tween 20 may lead to a reduction in the surface energy of the oleogels, which may indicate greater material stability. Changes in relative humidity and FT-IR spectral analysis confirm the influence of emulsifiers on the presence of characteristic functional groups in the structure of the oleogels. Additionally, microscopic analysis suggests that an emulsifier with a longer hydrophobic tail leads to a denser material structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, three different oil (black seed, St. John's Wort, and grape seed oils [GSO]) oleogels, which are especially used in complementary medicine, were produced with natural waxes (sunflower and beeswax [BW]). The physicochemical, textural, thermal, and structural features and volatile composition of the oleogels were determined and compared with commercial petrolatum gels (control sample). The sunflower and BW gels had a higher melting point than the petrolatum gels. Particularly, the firmness values of the fresh sunflower and BW oleogels were close to the petrolatum gels, except for the BW‐based St John's Wort and GSO gels. The firmness and stickiness values of the oleogels and the control samples increased in relation to the storage period. The increase in firmness value was less in the sunflower wax than in the BW and control samples. All sunflower, BW and petrolatum gels exhibited the β′ form. Volatile component data showed that different waxes have different volatile adsorption capacities. As a result, natural wax oleogels produced with various essential oils could be an alternative to similar products used in the cosmetics, pharmacology, and food supplement industries, which are already commercially available. In this way, oleogels are considered an alternative to solid fat such as margarine, butter, and shortening and an oil‐restricting agent against oil leakage in oil‐based foods. The purpose of this research was to determine any connections between the characteristics of oleogels made of beeswax and the impact of mango butter. Oleogel was prepared through inverted tube methods, and optimized through oil binding capacity. Other evaluations like bright field and polarized microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, crystallization kinetics, mechanical study, and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The drug release kinetic studies and in vitro antibacterial studies were performed. FTIR study reveals that the gelation process does not significantly alter the chemical composition of the individual components. Prepared gel exhibiting fluid-like behavior or composed of brittle networks is particularly vulnerable to disruptions in their network design. The incorporation of mango butter increases the drug permeation. In-vitro microbial efficacy study was found to be excellent. Obtaining core-sheath fibers by single-spinneret electrospinning is a recent and straightforward approach to prepare composite fibers. Fibers of more complex architecture consisting of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) core, inner poly(Llactide) sheath sd and outer beeswax (BW) sheath may also be obtained using this method. In the present study we report its applicability for a large series of (bio)degradable polyesters such as poly(e-caprolactone), poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide), poly(butylene succinate), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), and poly(L-lactideco- D,L-lactide). The fibers have a well-differentiated PEO core, polyester inner sheath and BW outer sheath. The possibility for targeted location of hydrophilic or hydrophobic substances in the core or in the sheaths of the PEO/polyester/BW fibers has been demonstrated using nanosized zinc oxide with unmodified (hydrophilic) or silanized (hydrophobic) surface. PEO/polyester/BW fibrous materials loaded with a model drug (5-nitro-8-hydroxyquinoline) exhibit antimicrobial activity. The obtained results show that single-spinneret electrospinning is a novel and versatile method to prepare core-double sheath composite fibers prospective for various applications such as biomedicine, cosmetics, and food packaging. Propolis is produced by bees using a mixture of bees wax and saliva. It contains several bioactive compounds that mainly induce anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In this review, we aimed to investigate the effects of propolis on kidney diseases. We used "Kidney", "Disease", "Propolis", "Renal", "Constituent", "Mechanism", "Infection", and other related keywords as the main keywords to search for works published before July 2023 in Google scholar, Scopus, and Pubmed databases. The search terms were selected according to Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). This review showed that propolis affects renal disorders with inflammatory and oxidative etiology due to its bioactive compounds, mainly flavonoids and polyphenols. There have been few studies on the effects of propolis on kidney diseases; nevertheless, the available studies are integrated in this review. Overall, propolis appears to be effective against several renal diseases through influencing mechanisms such as apoptosis, oxidative balance, and inflammation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the aim to produce solid fats with a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, oleogels based on olive and peanut oil with different concentrations of beeswax (BW) and glycerol monostearate (GMS) as oleogelators were studied and compared. The critical oleogelator concentration for both BW and GMS was 3%. Thermal properties of the developed GMS-based oleogels pointed to a polymorphic structure, confirmed by the presence of two exothermic and endothermic peaks. All developed oleogels released less than 4% of oil, highlighting their high oil binding capacity. A morphology evaluation of oleogels showed platelet-like crystals, characterized by a cross-sectional length of 50 μm in BW-based oleogels and irregular clusters of needle-like crystals with a higher diameter in GMS-based oleogels. BW-based oleogels showed a solid fat content ranging from 1.16% to 2.27%, and no solid fat content was found at 37 °C. GMS-based oleogels reached slightly higher values of SFC that ranged from 1.58% to 2.97% at 25 °C and from 1.00% to 1.75% at 37 °C. Olive oil-based oleogels with GMS showed higher firmness compared with BW-based ones. The stronger structure network in olive oil/GMS-based oleogels provided a real physical barrier to oxidants, showing a high oxidation stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study addressed pesticide contamination in beeswax, explicitly focusing on detecting Amitraz using innovative spectroscopy quantification. Beeswax's susceptibility to pesticides poses risks to colony health, prompting the need for efficient detection methods. Current offline techniques, notably gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), are accurate but financially burdensome. Honeybees' significance as global pollinators underscores the need to protect colonies from pesticides. Colony collapse disorder, triggered by pesticide exposure, is a widespread threat. This study proposes a cost-effective spectroscopy method for online hive monitoring, addressing gaps in existing identification methods. A systematic laboratory approach assessed the pesticide detection limit, targeting Amitraz in beeswax through online point spectroscopy and leveraging the short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral range enhanced sensitivity to pesticide-induced color changes. The model, combining methods, proved reliable for estimating amitraz contamination, significantly exceeding one ppm, using Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) sensors. Statistical analysis included. The study demonstrates the effectiveness of the AIW/BIW ratio in identifying amitraz concentrations above 1 ppm, particularly in the SWIR spectral range. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between the AIW/BIW ratio and Amitraz concentrations, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.9976. The proposed model, integrating methods, emerges as a dependable means for estimating amitraz contamination in beeswax, especially at concentrations exceeding 1 ppm, as validated through ASD sensors. This study was performed to investigate the impact of adding beeswax to sunflower oil on its frying life and the oxidative stability of the fried potato chips during storage. In this study, sunflower oil and its oleogels containing 2, 4, and 6/100 g(w/w) of beeswax were used in order to fry potato chips for 4 h each day for 4 days consecutively. Samples fried in sunflower oil absorbed the highest amount (37.0%) of oil compared to the lowest (32.9%) in 2% oleogel. The addition of beeswax did not negatively affect the color, texture, and sensory quality of potato chips. Based on the analysis of total polar components, changes in fatty acid composition, and p‐anisidine evaluation, the findings of this study indicate that the utilization of beeswax‐sunflower oil oleogel, particularly the 6% oleogel, may offer enhanced frying stability compared to sunflower oil. Moreover, chemical analyses of the potato chips stored for 30 days revealed that the control sample contained highest level of secondary oxidation products compared to the oleogels, indicating that fried potato chips in oleogels were more resistant to oxidation during storage. Historically, many canvas paintings were infused with wax–resin mixtures that have discolored over time, distorting the aesthetics of the work, limiting treatment options, and introducing unstable materials into the object. Removal of the wax–resin is often desirable, but before works of art can be treated, a protocol to evaluate the efficacy of the treatment must be established. A mock-up painting was infused with a known amount of a wax–resin mixture made from beeswax and dammar; this material was then extracted through six intervals of exposure to solvent-loaded and dry sheets of Evolon® CR, a non-woven textile with a high sorbent capacity. Samples from the Evolon® CR sheets from each extraction round were analyzed using thermal separation probe gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TSP-GC/MS). Normalization of peak areas related to beeswax and dammar to those of Evolon® CR revealed the relative amount of wax and resin removed throughout the extraction. The data show that, under these test conditions, the beeswax and dammar appear to be extracted with the same relative efficiency, information that cannot be provided through UV-induced visible fluorescence imaging of the Evolon® CR sheets or weight data alone, but which is critical to capture as it has implications for treatment success and the long-term stability of an artwork. Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to introduce a new adjuvant treatment for H. pylori that aims to enhance therapy outcomes. The research question is how to create a controlled-release gastro-retentive floating system using a combination of chitosan (CS) and beeswax (BW) and to evaluate the release behavior of curcumin as an active ingredient. Methods: In this study, a new formula combining CS and BW was developed through a hot melting process to create a controlled-release gastro-retentive floating system. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to determine the optimal conditions and concentrations of CS and BW to produce the desired floating system. Parameters such as mixing time, processing melting temperature, and concentration of BW were evaluated. Results: The study found that the optimal parameters for the CS/BW formulation were determined as follows: a mixing time of 3 min, a processing melting temperature of 92.2 °C, and a BW concentration of 13.3% (w/w). Curcumin was incorporated into the optimal tablet, and its release behavior was evaluated. The results showed a full floating behavior of the tablet and a zero-order release behavior in acidic conditions. Conclusions: The study successfully introduced a new adjuvant treatment for H. pylori that utilizes a controlled-release gastro-retentive floating system. The combination of CS and BW, along with the incorporation of curcumin, showed promising results in terms of floating behavior and release kinetics.
