In aquatic ecosystems, unicellular algae form the basis of the food webs. Theoretical and experimental studies have demonstrated that one of the mechanisms that maintain high diversity of phytoplankton is through predation and the consequent evolution of defence mechanisms. Proposed defence mechanisms in phytoplankton are diverse and include physiological (e.g. toxicity, bioluminescence), morphological (e.g. silica shell, colony formation), and behavioural (e.g. escape response) traits. However, the function of many of the proposed defence mechanisms remains elusive, and the costs and benefits (trade-offs) are often unquantified or undocumented. Here, we provide an overview of suggested phytoplankton defensive traits and review their experimental support. Wherever possible we quantify the trade-offs from experimental evidence and theoretical considerations. In many instances, experimental evidence suggests that defences are costless. However, we argue that (i) some costs materialize only under natural conditions, for example, sinking losses, or dependency on the availability of specific nutrients, and (ii) other costs become evident only under resource-deficient conditions where a rivalry for limiting resources between growth and defence occurs. Based on these findings, we suggest two strategies for quantifying the costs of defence mechanisms in phytoplankton: (i) for the evaluation of defence costs that are realized under natural conditions, a mechanistic understanding of the hypothesized component processes is required; and (ii) the magnitude of the costs (i.e. growth reduction) must be assessed under conditions of resource limitation.

International audience; Microbial endosymbionts alter the phenotype of their host which may have cascading effects at both population and community levels. However, we currently lack information on whether the effects of viruses on both host phenotypic traits and host population demography can modify interactions with upper trophic levels. To fill this gap, we investigated whether a prevalent densovirus infecting the aphid Myzus persicae (i.e. MpDNV) can modify trophic interactions between host aphids and their natural enemies (i.e. predators and parasitoids) by influencing aphid phenotypic traits (i.e. body mass and defensive behaviours), population demography (i.e. density and age-structure) and susceptibility towards both predation and parasitism. We found that the virus decreased aphid body mass but did not influence their behavioural defences. At the population level, the virus had a minor effect on aphid adult mortality whereas it strongly reduced the density of nymphs and influenced the stage structure of aphid populations. In addition, the virus enhanced the susceptibility of aphids to parasitism regardless of the parasitoid species. Predation rate on adult aphids was not influenced by the virus but ladybeetle predators strongly decreased the number of aphid nymphs, especially for uninfected ones compared to infected ones. As a result, the virus decreased predator effect on aphid populations. By reducing both aphid quality and availability, increasing their susceptibility to parasitism, and modulating predator effect on aphid populations, we highlighted that viral endosymbionts can be prevalent drivers of their host ecology as they modify their phenotypes and interspecific interactions. These virus-mediated ecological effects may have consequences on enemies foraging strategies as well as trophic webs dynamics and structure.

Each living organism is an active actor of a complex interaction web. Interactions between species imply selective pressures on their raits, driving their coevolution dynamics. As in an 'arms race', in host-parasitoid coevolution, host traits implied in resistance are selected, whereas host-exploitation abilities are selected in parasitoids. The host is itself member of other interactions, which may influence its traits, and consequently, impacts on parasitoid fitness. This thesis aimed to evaluate the influence of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum interactions web on the evolution and ecology of its dominant parasitoid Aphidius ervi. The interaction between the pea aphid and its host plant should impact on parasitoid populations because A. pisum populations exhibit host plant specialization, being a complex of genetically and phenotypically distinguished sympatric populations. However, we showed that there is no cascading genetic host-associated differentiation of A. ervi populations, in respect with host races. The parasitoids seem to equally exploit aphids from different host plants. As A. ervi have great dispersal ability and is a generalist species, gene flows are favoured between landscape compartments. Additionally, some pea aphid individuals harbour a facultative symbiont Hamiltonella defensa that provides protection against parasitoids. By analysing aphid behaviours in the presence of parasitoids, we showed that hosts infected with H. defensa exhibited reduced aggressiveness and escape reactions compared with uninfected aphids. The aphid and the symbiont should both benefit from these behavioural changes: both partners reduced the fitness decrements associated with the behavioural defences. We conducted also an experimental evolution procedure, selecting A. ervi on either high-resistant aphid populations harbouring H. Defensa, or low-resistant aphid populations free of H. defensa. The parasitoids performance selected on high-resistant host populations increased through generations. During selection process, host resistance induced a diminution of the allelic variability in A. ervi selected populations, leading to genetic divergence between populations exposed or not to high-resistant hosts. This experimentation highlighted the genetic and adaptive potential of this parasitoid species when faced with the symbiont mediated resistance of their hosts. The results of these studies are then discussed in respect to the fundamental and applied fields associated. L'objectif de ce travail est ainsi d'identifier l'influence du réseau d'interactions du puceron du pois Acyrthosiphon pisum sur l'évolution et l'écologie des populations de son principal parasitoïde Aphidius ervi. Le puceron du pois est lui-même parasite de sa plante hôte, leur coévolution aboutissant à une spécialisation de cet aphide cette espèce hôte végétale. Les populations de pucerons sont donc structurées en races d'hôtes sympatriques, divergeant génétiquement et phénotypiquement. Notre étude montre une absence de structuration génétique des populations de parasitoïdes selon les races d'hôte. A. ervi exploite indifféremment les A. pisum issus de différentes plantes hôtes, excluant la présence d'un effet cascade associé à la spécialisation alimentaire chez ce puceron. La dispersion et le caractère généraliste du parasitoïde semblent favoriser les flux de gènes entre les différents éléments d'un paysage agricole. A. pisum peut également abriter le symbiote Hamiltonella defensa qui lui confère une résistance à A. ervi. Ces microorganismes symbiotiques induisent une réduction des défenses comportementales chez les pucerons porteurs. Cette diminution de l'expression des comportements défensifs favorise à la fois le puceron et son symbiote car elle réduit les coûts associés à ces comportements. Enfin, une évolution expérimentale sur des populations de parasitoïdes soumises à des populations d'hôtes portant H. defensa (résistantes) ou non (sensibles) montre une adaptation des parasitoïdes soumis aux hôtes résistants. Cette adaptation s'accompagne d'une réduction de la variabilité génétique dans les populations exposées à la résistance. On observe également une divergence génétique entre les populations exposées ou non à la résistance conférée par le symbiote, H. defensa. Cette expérimentation met en évidence le potentiel évolutif des populations d'A. ervi et donc leurs capacités d'adaptation face à des pucerons résistants. Les intérêts fondamentaux et appliqués de ces travaux sont discutés et replacés dans un contexte général.
