This study aimed to investigate the effect of maca extract-containing food on sleep quality improvement in healthy perimenopausal Japanese women. This study randomly assigned 58 study participants (within 3 years of natural menopause) into the maca extract-containing food group (maca group) or a placebo food group (placebo group) using a computer-generated block randomization (each n = 29). Participants received two capsules before bedtime daily with water for 8 weeks of either maca extract (Maca extract powder BG1.2) or placebo. The assessment items included sleep quality according to the Oguri-Shirakawa-Azumi sleep inventory middle age version (OSA-MA), menopausal symptom severity according to the simplified menopausal index (SMI), and serum estradiol and follicle-stimulating hormone concentrations. The analysis dataset included 29 and 28 participants in the maca and placebo groups, respectively, and these participants were 46-55 years old. "Refreshing" score of OSA-MA (Maca group, 17.2 ±5.9; Placebo group, 15.0 ± 4.5), the SMI score (Maca group, 38.7 ± 12.0; Placebo group, 45.4 ± 13.1), and "hot flushes" and "headache, vertigo or nausea" of SMI subitems (Maca group, both median 0.0; Placebo group, both median 3.0, respectively) were significantly improved in the maca group than in the placebo group. There were no adverse events attributable to the intake of the test foods. These results indicate that the maca extract-containing food changed the quality of sleep in a favorable direction to reduce fatigue upon waking in perimenopausal women and improved symptoms of hot flashes, headache, vertigo, and nausea.
