Objective: The objective of this study was to construct econometric models to identify and analyze the variables that define and explain the deforestation cycle in the Amazon. Theoretical framework: The forest is one of the main sources of carbon sequestration and storage on Earth. Thus, deforestation and forest burning contribute to increasing the impact of the greenhouse effect on climate change, due to CO2 emissions. The protection of the Amazon forest is prioritized for its contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change. Results and conclusion: The annual increase in deforested forest area in the Amazon follows a polynomial behavior explained by the exchange relationships between the prices of deforested and occupied areas with crops and pastures and the prices of lands with native forest. It is this exchange relationship that deserves the attention of policymakers for forest preservation through deforestation control. Research implications: This exchange relationship can cause a turnaround in the deforestation cycle based on the knowledge of the value of standing forests, a fact that would reverse the exchange relationship and require the adoption of sustainable practices in agricultural, livestock, mineral, and forestry production systems. Originality/value: This research shows that there is an increase in deforested area in the Amazon forest, with only the rate of this deforestation varying, which can be increasing or decreasing.

CIRCULAR economy , *SEA urchins , *AQUACULTURE industry , *WATER purification , *NAVICULA , *SPIRULINA - Abstract
Introduction: The aquaculture industry is constantly growing, registering a global production of almost 88 million tonnes by 2020. This industry brings environmental problems if its effluents are not properly treated. In 2020, the first technology-based company of CONICET was established in Argentine Patagonia whose purpose is the aquaculture production of the green sea urchin, Arbacia dufresnii to develop a range of nutraceutical products. Its cultivation system entails a commitment to sustainability since its creation, and yet it generates effluents with high levels of nitrates and phosphates. Objective: Given this scenario, and valuing bioremediation as a water treatment tool, the use of marine microalgae as phytoremediating agents of aquaculture effluent is proposed in this work. Methods: The microalgae Chaetoceros gracilis, Navicula sp., Tetraselmis suecica, Rhodomona salina, Nanochloropsis galvana and Cylindrotheca closterium were use; which are used as food for sea urchins larvae in the production process. An experiment was designed that compares the microalgal growth and the removal capacity of nutrients in the effluent in contrast to the artificial culture medium currently used in the production cycle. Results: It is possible to remedy the aquaculture industry's effluent by employing the selected microalgae, with a percentage of removal efficiency of 100 % of the nitrate and an average removal efficiency percentage of 50 % for all the microalgae tested. Likewise, significantly higher microalgal biomass values were obtained when the culture was carried out in the effluent the culture in the artificial environment. Conclusions: The advances in research provided in this work show that it is possible to take advantage of a discard to cultivate microalgae, even improving microalgal productivity for use as food, reducing the costs involved in the microalgal production sector by changing the use of the type of current culture medium (F/2) for that from a current discard. These advances, if scaled and validated, can improve industry sustainability standards within the framework of a circular economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUSTAINABILITY , *SUSTAINABLE development , *COMMUNITY-based participatory research , *AGRICULTURAL ecology , *ENVIRONMENTAL monitoring - Abstract
The objective is to analyze organic farming as part of the bioeconomy, with emphasis on the triple base. The methodology is qualitative, using Participatory Action Research with agroecological producer communities in Tenjo and Tibacuy, Cundinamarca. In the economic dimension, it was found that producers use strategies such as barter, short circuits and the production of their own inputs. However, the lack of cost tracking and the absence of a consolidated brand are identified weaknesses. In the environmental dimension, the production of biological inputs and sustainable practices stands out, although the use of non-sustainable packaging is noted as a weakness. The lack of monitoring of the ecological footprint is identified as an aspect to be improved. In the social dimension, agroecology strengthens the community through barter, peasant markets and employment generation. However, lack of certification, limited participation in networks and low generational relay represent social challenges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ECONOMIC models , *LIVESTOCK productivity , *SUSTAINABLE development , *AGRICULTURE , *REFERENCE pricing - Abstract
In the province of La Pampa, Argentina, a significant portion of the territory is occupied by xerophytic caldén forests. These forests have undergone an intense process of degradation due to inappropriate silvicultural and livestock management, resulting in bushy formations, of low productivity, called "shrub thicket". With the aim of increasing livestock productivity and reducing the risk of wildfires, various interventions are carried out in these forests, generating forest residues that are often not utilized or harnessed. In this context, circular bioeconomy emerges as a conceptual framework challenging the linearity of the current economic model. It proposes the utilization of all residues and by-products from productive activities. The objective of this work is to economically analyze the potential use in the field of forest residues derived from interventions in the native forests of caldén. The estimated minimum and maximum quantities of potential forest residue generated by different interventions ranged between 33.12 and 44.81 Mg.ha-1. The costs necessary to make the waste available were estimated; economic-financial indicators were calculated to determine the necessary volumes to cover costs and achieve benefits. The circular utilization of forest residues from native forests is feasible, provided that viable scales are generated, and reference prices are attractive for agricultural producers and involved economic agents. Using a feminist institutional approach, we examine the dominant institutional views and frameworks explaining company positions regarding the implementation of gender policies. A multiple case study was performed on four Spanish companies involved in sectors related to the circular bioeconomy. The analysis relied on secondary sources and semi-structured interviews with women in positions of responsibility in these companies. The results provide evidence on the gender issues encountered and their limitations in terms of organizational change, as well as the dominant institutional frameworks of the companies. The findings suggest that the main drivers for change are intense state regulation, company commitment to formalizing measures and the presence of critical actors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Platform Economy uses data related to the habits and lives of users that are processed by algorithms. Although it was allowed to create a new market for behavioral predictions in which behavioral data of interest to both state intelligence services and advertising departments are bought and sold, management is also taking advantage of this new instrument. This is the case of the rider sector. The article analyzes the tricks used by the employees of a food delivery service company located in a city in the Valencian community to "negotiate" their work. As this "negotiation" renders indeterminate the distinctions between the workers and their very separation from the company and the clients, each one with their respective tricks, it is necessary to pay attention to the resulting anarchic logic, which includes the theater of ignorance and knowledge that together contribute to creating.

GLOBAL production networks , *VALUE (Economics) , *VALUE capture - Abstract
Advances in conjunctural analysis and insights into global production networks (GPNs) are used to examine the ways policymakers develop bio-pharma development strategies to manage the trade-offs between economic value capture and securing value for health. Four strategic state roles are identified – provision, protection, procurement and production – all shown to be recombined in conjuncture-contingent ways. Case studies of California's Bay Area, Puerto Rico's Bio-Island, China's Greater Bay Area, Singapore's Biopolis and South Africa's mRNA Hub in Cape Town illustrate how each regional conjuncture leads to recombinations of the roles in ways that reflect the connected but also competing and contested strategies for securing economic value vis-à-vis health value. The resulting variegation of development makes manifest policy struggles that continue to complicate the meanings of strategic coupling and value in hubs of bio-pharma GPNs.

A review of the Colombian species of Ericaceae with edible fruits is presented, with emphasis on their use, propagation, and cultivation. Twenty-five species in ten genera were recorded, whose highest diversity is concentrated in Cavendishia, Disterigma, Gaultheria, and Vaccinium. Most of the species are distributed in the middle and upper areas of the Eastern and Central Andean Mountains. Although direct and sporadic fruit consumption is the most frequent, fruit processing into derived products was reported for seven species, and only three of them have had some level of trade. Although propagation and cultivation studies are concentrated on Vaccinium meridionale, basic propagation studies are recorded on Vaccinium floribundum, Macleania rupestris, Cavendishia bracteata, Disterigma alaternoides, and Thibaudia floribunda. However, most fruits of Colombian Ericaceae are primarily harvested from wild populations. Detailed studies of the effect of harvesting on natural populations are not currently known, nor are there management plans for their use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUSTAINABLE development , *REFLECTION (Philosophy) , *LIFE sciences , *BIG data , *CAPITALISM - Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze from a philosophical reflection the unprecedented devices of biogeneration (genetics and DNA manipulation) and infogeneration (algorithms and Big Data) that characterize the contemporary modes of production and accumulation of both biogenetic and platform capitalism. The emergence of these devices has been possible due to the growing integration and mutual leverage between technoscience, bioeconomy and life sciences (biology, medicine, genetics), which has given rise to an extended, refined, and sophisticated biopolitical power that takes as its target the most intimate confines of the living. First, we outline the techno-scientific and socioeconomic conditions that make possible a style of molecular thinking that, on the one hand, guides the new trajectory of a molecular biopolitics on life and, on the other, creates a new biotechnological molecular park in which crowd a cast of forms of different sign. Secondly, we address the biogeneration device that, together with biomedical knowledge and biogenetic capitalism, shapes life until it becomes a source of biovalue. Finally, we analyze the infogeneration device that, articulated with algorithmic knowledge and platform capitalism, extracts data and information from genes, cells, and molecules to make them circulate within the circuits of biocapital and bioeconomy.

To protect the essential ecosystem services for the maintenance of society, effective mechanisms of incentive are necessary, acting supplementary to command and control instruments. The Ecological ICMS of Paraná State, Brazil, which was the first project of this kind in the country, showed effectiveness as a conservation incentive during its 30 years in operation and has the potential to enhance and increase the safety net of biodiversity in Paraná through municipal support to owners of Private Natural Heritage Reserves - RPPN. The aim of this study was to analyze the technical and legal feasibility of Payments for Environmental Services – PSA from municipalities to RPPN owners, using the Ecological ICMS as the main financial source. The Ecological ICMS in Paraná uses qualitative annual assessments, whose results highly affect the transfer of resources to the municipalities. Therefore, the programs to support RPPN owners tend to increase the tributary benefits of the municipalities. The average performance of RPPNs in Paraná was 27.5% in 2021, indicating an environmental and tributary underutilization of these areas. The PSA is the most attractive modality of incentive for RPPN owners since it generates financial benefits directly for them. However, because of specific norms, other modalities of municipal incentives are currently predominant, among which the most effective has been the inter-municipal agreements for conservation unit management. We suggest that the PSA model used in the Paraná State should be adapted to the municipalities using the Municipal Environment Fund, with resources from the Ecological ICMS. The inflow of resources from the private initiative, to comply with legal requirements and for marketing purposes, should also be observed. We suggest defining priority areas and specific environmental services so that these programs can converge with municipal policies for conservation and sustainable development.

BIODIVERSITY conservation , *SUSTAINABLE development , *FOOD security - Abstract
Despite its rich sociobiodiversity, the Amazon faces significant challenges regarding food security. The Brazilian National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) emerges as a strategic opportunity to address the issue of food insecurity and to synergistically contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and the strengthening of local economic development. Although PNAE encourages the presence of regional foods and sociobiodiversity in school meals, the effective inclusion of these foods remains a challenge. In this policy brief, we summarize recommendations to promote the effective inclusion of sociobiodiversity in school meals, in six strategies. We believe that the stakeholders directly involved in the PNAE decision-making can benefit from these recommendations, including public officials responsible for ensuring the human right to adequate food, as well as the institutions regulating the activities of nutritionists who serve as technical experts for the program.
