Phosphorus (P) is involved in various biochemical reactions in plant growth, so it is beneficial to plants growing in soils contaminated by metals, including cadmium (Cd). However, few studies have reported on the mechanistic roles of P in mitigating Cd toxicity to ryegrass root, and especially in alleviating the disruption of the mitochondrial function of living cells. In this study, the physiological and biochemical mechanisms associated with ryegrass growth under various Cd and P treatments were investigated using leaching and pot systems. The concentration of Cd in soil leachates showed a significantly positive relationship with redox potential (P < 0.05), but negative relationship (P < 0.05) with leachate pH values and dissolved organic carbon (DOC), indicating that exogenous P addition (as H 2 PO 4 −) may decrease Cd leaching from contaminated soil. Compared to the control (without P addition), the cumulative Cd content was reduced by 53.3% and 64.5% in the soil leachate with exogenous P application (20 mg/L and 80 mg/L), respectively. Notably, application of P decreased the Cd concentrations in the symplastic fractions and increased the Cd concentrations in the apoplastic fractions in root tips, which may help to alleviate Cd stress to the protoplast. Moreover, exogenous P was found to play a positive role in mitochondrial function and Ca2+ variation in root cells under Cd stress, which provides novel insights into the mechanisms of exogenous P in alleviating plant Cd injury. 210Po, 210Pb, and 234Th were determined in water columns of the East China Sea (ECS) to investigate their biogeochemical behaviors during a severe red tide event. Dissolved 210Po, 210Pb, and 234Th accounted for large fractions of the total phases. The abnormally high concentrations of dissolved 210Pb were observed. Partition behaviors of these radionuclides were influenced by particle content effect and particle composition based on distribution coefficient (Kd) vs. total suspended matter (TSM) content and Kd vs. ratios of particulate organic carbon and total suspended matter contents (POC/TSM content ratios). The peaks of mass specific activities of 210Po, 210Pb, and 234Th indicated that degraded particles could have an intensified enrichment ability for radionuclides compared with the surficial suspended matters. Fractionation factor of 210Po and 210Pb (FPo/Pb) (>1) and fractionation factor of 210Po and 234Th (FPo/Th) (>1) were much higher at algal blooming regions than that at non-blooming stations, indicating that algal blooms promoted the fractionation of 210Po against 210Pb and 234Th, and proving that 210Po exhibited a stronger affinity for biogenic particles than 210Pb and 234Th when POC content increased in the sea. POC/210Po, POC/210Pb and POC/234Th ratios (content/activity ratios) sharply decreased with depth in both algal bloom and non-bloom stations. The outbreak of algal bloom promoted the complexity of suspended particles and increased the variability of POC/tracer ratios (content/activity ratios) in the different depth of the shallow seas. Due to the remoteness and difficulty of sampling, the 210Po and 210Pb data are scarce in the Southern Ocean. Here, the activity concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb around Prydz Bay in austral summer were determined to understand their spatial variation and evaluate the dynamics of particle organic matter (POM). The activity concentrations of dissolved 210Po (D210Po) and 210Pb (D210Pb) range from 0.47 to 3.20 Bq⋅m–3 and from 1.15 to 2.97 Bq⋅m–3, respectively, with the lower values in the shelf. The particulate 210Po (P210Po) and 210Pb (P210Pb) are lower in the open ocean and increase to the coastal waters, among which the circumpolar deep water (CDW) is the lowest. The activity concentration of total 210Pb (T210Pb) ranges from 1.26 Bq⋅m–3 to 3.16 Bq⋅m–3, with a higher value in CDW, which is ascribed to radiogenic production from 226Ra and subsequent lateral transport. Occasionally a high value of T210Po occurs in deep water (>3.00 Bq⋅m–3), which may be caused by the remineralization of POM. The disequilibria between T210Po and T210Pb appears throughout the water column at most stations. The average T210Po/T210Pb)A.R. in the euphotic zone is 0.66, reflecting the effect of strong particle scavenging. There is a good positive correlation between the solid-liquid ratio of 210Po and POC, while 210Pb does not, indicating that particulate organic matter regulates the biogeochemical cycle of 210Po around Prydz Bay. Based on the 210Po/210Pb disequilibria, the export flux of POC in the water column is estimated to be 0.8–31.9 mmol m–2 d–1, with the higher values in the shelf.

Bacteriohopanepolyols (BHPs), as a novel bacterial biomarker, show clear potential for tracking organic matter sources and environmental change. To evaluate BHPs as indicators of seasonal hypoxia in the Yangtze Estuary and its adjacent areas, the composition, distribution, and source of BHPs in surface sediments were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS). A total of 12 BHPs were detected with a normalized TOC concentration of 3.79-269 μg·g -1 . The BHPs present in the surface sediments were dominated by bacteriohopanetetrol (BHT), 2-methyl-BHT, amino-BHPs, and adenosylhopane and its homologues, accounting for 40%, 22%, 12%, and 4% of the total BHPs, respectively. Each of these components and their corresponding indices show clear spatial trends. Specifically, BHT showed an "offshore increase" trend, which was mainly attributed to marine autochthonous inputs; and soil marker BHPs including adenosylhopane, which were dominated by terrestrial sources, showed an "offshore decrease" trend. The R soil index indicated a similar spatial pattern to the soil marker BHPs, with the relative contribution of terrestrial organic matter decreasing from 61.5% in coastal waters to 1.66% in the open ocean. This suggests that the organic matter in the coastal waters was mainly derived from terrestrial sources while marine sources were dominant in the open ocean. BHT-Ⅱ, the BHT stereoisomer, was derived from anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria. High BHT-Ⅱ ratios were consistent with seasonal hypoxic zones in the Yangtze Estuary and, furthermore, these ratios were significantly negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in the bottom waters. These observations indicate that hypoxic environments are beneficial to BHT-Ⅱ production, implying that BHT-Ⅱ can be used as an indicator of marine hypoxia.
