CATTLE - Abstract
Management in a livestock is described, with data obtained in 597 females, using both the traditional registration system and the Assessment Scale for Behaviour in Bullfighting Cattle (EBL-10). Results of both methods are compared. Relationships between bravery related behaviors and other variables such as the morphological type, the characteristic of humiliating and the two different origins present in this livestock are analyzed. The correlation between the final scores of the traditional system and the EBL-10 was significant (p <0.01). So was the reliability (p = 0.00). There is a significant increase in the final mean score of both methods with the increase in the humiliation variable. In both methods, the final mean score is higher in the Núñez origin. The three variables of greatest weight to explain the final EBL score (R2 = 0.91) are: transmission, offensiveness, and charging at the cape. If we consider the traditional final score as a dependent variable, the variables with the greatest weight are charging at the cape, charging at the mounted bullfighter's horse, transmission, nobility and fierceness (R2 = 0.85). The higher the phenotypic score, the higher the final mean score in both systems. There is a correlation between the score obtained in charging at the mounted bullfighter's horse and the final score obtained on charging at the cape (r = 0.53; p = 0.00). Both methods are useful for selection and management, although the EBL-10 provides greater discriminatory capacity. Morphology and humiliation seem keys to explain bravery. Modifications are proposed to improve the EBL-10 scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
