In recent years, there has been growing interest in olive genotypes (Olea europaea L.) suitable for super-high-density (SHD > 1200 trees/hectare) orchards. To date, only a few cultivars are considered fitting for such cultivation system. In this study, the first results on the architectural characteristics of the canopy of ten new olive genotypes are presented. Their suitability for SHD orchards was evaluated and compared with the cultivar 'Arbequina', which is considered suitable for SHD olive orchards and, for this reason, was used as the control. Several canopy measurements were taken, and some architectural parameters, such as branching frequency, branching density, and branch diameter/stem diameter ratio were calculated. The branching frequency value was greater than 0.20 in 'Arbequina' and in only four of the genotypes. The branching density in five genotypes was similar to 'Arbequina'. 'Arbequina' had the lowest value for the branch diameter/stem diameter ratio, and only three genotypes had similar values. These initial results showed that only one genotype has all canopy architectural characteristics comparable to those of the cv. 'Arbequina'. For different kinds of plants, the distribution of lateral roots is highly plastic in different growth environments. In particular, the branching distance of the roots plays a decisive role in the formation of the root system architecture. In many root-system architecture models, constant branching distances of different branching orders usually are used to simulate the dynamics of a root system architecture. However, little is known about the formation of lateral roots, and branching distances for different branching orders are variable in the actual root system. The resource allocation model for predicting the lateral root distribution in individual plants has been established based on Parrondo's game. The root branching data predicted by the model is compared with the actual root branching data. The results show that the proposed method can cause serious changes in the spacing and distribution of lateral root formation. A parameter called development window can be used to override interbranch distance in the root-system architecture models.

Background and Aims Upland rice is often grown where water and phosphorus (P) are limited. To better understand the interaction between water and P availability, functional–structural models that mechanistically represent small-scale nutrient gradients and water dynamics in the rhizosphere are needed. Methods Rice was grown in large columns using a P-deficient soil at three P supplies in the topsoil (deficient, sub-optimal and non-limiting) in combination with two water regimes (field capacity vs. drying periods). Root system characteristics, such as nodal root number, lateral types, interbranch distance, root diameters and the distribution of biomass with depth, as well as water and P uptake, were measured. Based on the observed root data, 3-D root systems were reconstructed by calibrating the structural architecure model CRootBox for each scenario. Water flow and P transport in the soil to each of the individual root segments of the generated 3-D root architectures were simulated using a multiscale flow and transport model. Total water and P uptake were then computed by adding up the uptake by all the root segments. Key Results Measurements showed that root architecture was significantly affected by the treatments. The moist, high P scenario had 2.8 times the root mass, double the number of nodal roots and more S-type laterals than the dry, low P scenario. Likewise, measured plant P uptake increased >3-fold by increasing P and water supply. However, drying periods reduced P uptake at high but not at low P supply. Simulation results adequately predicted P uptake in all scenarios when the Michaelis–Menten constant (K m) was corrected for diffusion limitation. They showed that the key drivers for P uptake are the different types of laterals (i.e. S- and L-type) and growing root tips. The L-type laterals become more important for overall water and P uptake than the S-type laterals in the dry scenarios. This is true across all the P treatments, but the effect is more pronounced as the P availability decreases. Conclusions This functional–structural model can predict the function of specific rice roots in terms of P and water uptake under different P and water supplies, when the structure of the root system is known. Analytical solution for the bivariate distribution W(r,k) of the degree of polymerization r and the number of branch points k is obtained for the random branching of polymer chains that follow the Schulz–Zimm distribution, or in mathematical term, the gamma distribution. It is found that when the bivariate distribution is normalized to make the total area unity, the normalized distribution follows another gamma distribution. The bivariate distribution function enables one to determine various useful properties of the branched polymer system, including full weight fraction distribution W(r), the number‐ and weight‐average degree of polymerization having k branch points, the expected branching density ρ for a given degree of polymerization r or a given number of branch points k. The branching density at large r limit, ρr → ∞ is an important property to represent the branched polymer system, rather than the average branching density of the whole system, and the value of ρr → ∞ can be determined for the present random branched system. Thus, it represents the variations in distance between the potential sites (with two parameters), and the probability of emergence of a lateral root at each site (one parameter). We show the ability of this model to account for the main variations in inter-branch distances with a limited number of parameters, and we estimated them for the different species. These parameters can be considered as promising traits to characterize—in a comprehensive and simple way—the genetic and environmental variations in the whole branching process at plant level. Based on the results, we make recommendations for carrying out comparable measurements of the branching density in developed plants. Moreover, we suggest the integration of this new model as a module in future RSA simulators, to improve their capacity to account for this important and highly variable characteristic of plant species.

The development of crops with better growth under suboptimal phosphorus availability would improve food security in developing countries while reducing environmental pollution in developed countries. We tested the hypothesis that maize (Zea mays) phenotypes with greater lateral root branching density have greater phosphorus acquisition from low phosphorus soils. Recombinant inbred lines with either ‘many short’ (MS) or ‘few long’ (FL) lateral root phenotypes were grown under high and low phosphorus conditions in greenhouse mesocosms and in the field. Under low phosphorus in mesocosms, lines with the MS phenotype had 89% greater phosphorus acquisition and 48% more shoot biomass than FL lines. Under low phosphorus in the field, MS lines had 16% shallower rooting depth (D95), 81% greater root length density in the top 20 cm of the soil, 49% greater shoot phosphorus content, 12% greater leaf photosynthesis, 19% greater shoot biomass, and 14% greater grain yield than FL lines. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the phenotype of many, shorter lateral roots improves phosphorus acquisition under low phosphorus availability and merits consideration for genetic improvement of phosphorus efficiency in maize and other crops. Background and Aims Root diameter, especially apical diameter, plays an important role in root development and function. The variation in diameter between roots, and along roots, affects root structure and thus the root system's overall foraging performance. However, the effect of diameter variation on root elongation, branching and topological connections has not been examined systematically in a population of high-order roots, nor along the roots, especially for mature plants grown in the field. Methods A method combining both excavation and analysis was applied to extract and quantify root architectural traits of adult, field-grown maize plants. The relationships between root diameter and other root architectural characteristics are analysed for two maize cultivars. Key Results The basal diameter of the lateral roots (orders 1-3) was highly variable. Basal diameter was partly determined by the diameter of the bearing segment. Basal diameter defined a potential root length, but the lengths of most roots fell far short of this. This was explained partly by differences in the pattern of diameter change along roots. Diameter tended to decrease along most roots, with the steepness of the gradient of decrease depending on basal diameter. The longest roots were those that maintained (or sometimes increased) their diameters during elongation. The branching density (cm-1) of laterals was also determined by the diameter of the bearing segment. However, the location of this bearing segment along the mother root was also involved-intermediate positions were associated with higher densities of laterals. Conclusions The method used here allows us to obtain very detailed records of the geometry and topology of a complex root system. Basal diameter and the pattern of diameter change along a root were associated with its final length. Partial branching enzyme treatment was used to modulate the starch fine chain structure responsible for a high content of slowly digestible starch fraction. Normal maize starch modified using branching enzyme for 4 h showed a maximum slowly digestible starch content of 23.90%. The branching enzyme hydrolysis decreased the amylose content from 32.8% to 12.8%. The molecular weight distribution of enzyme-treated starches showed a larger proportion of low molecular weight fractions appeared in the enzyme treated starch sample compare to native starch. The number of shorter chains (DP < 13) increased from 18.71% to 28.23.1%, accompanied by a reduction of longer chains (DP > 30) from 20.11% to 11.95%. 1H NMR spectra showed an increase of α-1,6 branching ratio from 4.7% to 9.4% during enzyme treatment. The increase in the amount of shorter chains and more a-1,6 linkages likely contribute to their slow digestion property. Two parameters characterizing the branching features of polymers, branching density (BD), and branching completeness (BC), are proposed. Both have values of zero (0) for linear polymers. Branching density has the values of 1/2, 2/3, and (f – 2)/(f – 1) for the fully and densest branched polymers formed from tri-, tetra-, and f-functional monomers typed AB f –1. Branching completeness will reach the value of one (1) for a completely branched polymer, where all possible branching monomeric units have reacted at least tri-functionally and all units are either terminal or dendritic. Branching density is close to the mole fraction of terminal units, and BC is close to the mole fraction of dendritic and terminal units in the branching polymers. The major advantage of these parameters is their independence of the degree of polymerization (dp). Branching density depends on the functionalities (f) of monomer units; BC does not. The higher the fraction of the dendritic unit monomerically bonded to a higher number of other units (the higher the terminal units fraction), the denser branched the polymer and the higher the BD. The BC and BD can be used in a simple way for describing multicharacter branching systems and for comparing the branching characters among them without any theoretical limitations. Physical quantities (namely, the number of dendritic and terminal units and the degree of polymerization) used for BD and BC evaluation can be determined directly from practical analyses, where NMR is most useful. Image analysis is used in numerous studies of root system architecture (RSA). To date, fully automatic procedures have not been good enough to completely replace alternative manual methods. DART (Data Analysis of Root Tracings) is freeware based on human vision to identify roots, particularly across time-series. Each root is described by a series of ordered links encapsulating specific information and is connected to other roots. The population of links constitutes the RSA. DART creates a comprehensive dataset ready for individual or global analyses and this can display root growth sequences along time. We exemplify here individual tomato root growth response to shortfall in solar radiation and we analyse the global distribution of the inter-root branching distances. DART helps in studying RSA and in producing structured and flexible datasets of individual root growth parameters. Abstract: The branched structure properties of hyperbranched polysaccharides (TM3a and TM3b), extracted from sclerotia of Pleurotus tuber-regium, were studied by using laser light scattering and viscometry. The configurational shrinking factor (g) and viscometric shrinking factor (g′) of TM3a and TM3b were discussed, where curdlan and pullulan were taken as the linear references for derivation of g and g′. The dependences of g factor, g′ factor, and Flory factor (Φ branched) on weight average molecular weight (M w) were established to be g =1.07×102 , g′=3.63×101 , and Φ branched =7.08×1020 for TM3a in 0.25M LiCl/DMSO at 25°C, when curdlan acted as the linear reference. A power law relationship g′=2.71×10−1 g −0.61±0.1 for TM3a was found, and the exponent was approximately same to 0.60 established by Kurata et al. for polystyrene star molecules. The dependence of g factor on M w for TM3b was found to be g =1.99×102 , when pullulan was used as the linear reference. On the basis of Zimm–Stockmayer equation for tetrafunctional units, molecular weight of branching unit (M 0) deduced from nonlinear curve fitting of g versus M w was 8739±564g/mol and 3961±1245g/mol for TM3a and TM3b, respectively. The effect of different linear reference curves and polydispersity was discussed. This work gave valuable information on branched structure characterization and insights into the biosynthetic pathways of the hyperbranched polysaccharide from fungus. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The crown structure of Eucalyptus nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden 6 years after thinning, and the development of stand leaf area index both immediately and 6 years after thinning, were investigated. Thinning did not alter branch angle, branching density or the relationship between branch size and branch leaf area. However, larger branches were found in the lower crown of thinned trees and the increase in leaf area as a result of thinning occurred on the northern aspect of the crown. The vertical distribution of leaf area in unthinned trees was skewed toward the top of the crown and correlated with live crown ratio. The vertical distribution of leaf area in thinned trees tended to be less skewed and was unrelated to tree size or dominance. Leaf area index, as estimated from light interception measurements, increased at a constant rate soon after thinning regardless of residual stocking. In the longer term, residual stocking had a strong influence on leaf area increase per tree and was correlated with changes in crown length. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The genetic variation among pea accessions is mostly associated with P foraging capability of root system. • Root traits are remarkably affected by environment temperature. • Optimum environment temperature increases lateral root density and extend root branching zone deeper into the soil. Seeds of ten different pea genotypes were sown in styrofoam transplant trays filled with vermiculite and kept in two different growth chambers, respectively at air temperatures of 10 °C and 15 °C. In both chambers the relative humidity was maintained at 90%, PPFD 180 μmol m−2 s−1and the photoperiod 12 h. At DAS 15 and 31, ten plant of each treatment were selected randomly, dissected and separated into roots and shoots. Root system was scanned and acquired root images were analyzed. Subsequently, all plant organs were dried (65 °C, 48 h) and weighed separately. Significant genetic variation was identified regarding root traits. Rather than with the drought resistance and N foraging capability the genetic variation was associated with P foraging capability of the root system. Despite significant genotype differences, root traits were remarkably affected by environment temperature. The suboptimum temperature reduced growth and delayed root development processes. The decrease of temperature from 15 °C to 10 °C was followed by a significant decrease in the dry matter of plant, but the ratio of root dry matter to plant dry matter was significantly increased. The total root length was also significantly decreased, almost totally due to a significant decrease in the lateral root length. Only slight effects were found regarding tap root length. Water and nutrient uptake capabilities of pea plants were enhanced under optimum temperature conditions, mostly due to increased lateral root density and extended root branching zone deeper into the soil. Either the differences in lateral root (LR) density or the length of branching zone seems to be related with the effects of temperature to the length of development time from LR initiation to LR emergence.
