Background: Patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) suffer from chronic and progressive symptom burden. MPN trials capturing patient-reported symptoms routinely administer the MPN Symptom Assessment Form (SAF). The MPN-10 assesses 10 of the most clinically relevant symptoms, including fatigue and generates a Total Symptom Score (TSS). The original MPN-10 included a fatigue item from the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). The myelofibrosis-specific symptom assessment tool called the MFSAF v4 utilizes a fatigue item developed to be consistent with other items within the SAF. This study sought to validate a modified version of the MPN-10 TSS using the SAF fatigue item for harmonization with MFSAF v4. Methods: Survey data from two cohorts of patients with essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, or myelofibrosis assessing MPN characteristics and symptom burden were used. Results and conclusion: BFI and SAF fatigue items were highly correlated in raw score (Pearson r = 0.88), comparable in their severity categorizations (89% agreement for severe versus non-severe) and respective contributions to the TSS (both Cronbach’s alpha = 0.89). Reliability of SAF fatigue was acceptable and independently associated with known disease-related characteristics (splenomegaly, low quality-of-life, and distress). Fatigue in patients with MPNs is measured with high similarity using the SAF fatigue item within the MPN-10 in harmonization with the MFSAF v4. Background and Objective Transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) is a rare genetic disease characterized by a deficiency of functional β-globin, ultimately leading to lifelong dependence on blood transfusions. There is little patient- and caregiver-reported data with which to understand the holistic and societal impact of TDT. The objective of this study was to evaluate the patient- and caregiver-reported disease-management, symptom, and quality-of-life burden of TDT. Methods We conducted a prospective, observational, real-world study of adults with TDT and caregivers of adolescents with TDT, in Italy, the UK, and the USA. Over 90 days, participants used a smartphone application to respond to surveys about their or their dependent’s TDT, including bespoke background and disease-management surveys, the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), the Transfusion-dependent Quality of life questionnaire (TranQol), and the Brief Pain Inventory Short Form (BPI-SF). Results Eighty-five individuals participated. Mean BFI and TranQol scores on enrollment were 5.0 (0–10 scale; 10 = worst symptoms) and 51 (0–100 scale; 100 = best quality of life), respectively. Mean transfusion frequency was every 3.2 weeks. Mean time spent on TDT management was 592 min on transfusion days and 91 min on non-transfusion days (11 h per week). Mean BFI and BPI-SF “worst fatigue” and “worst pain” scores were higher in the 5 days pre-transfusion than in the 5 days post-transfusion (fatigue 5.05 vs 4.29; pain 4.33 vs 3.85; 0–10 scale; 10 = worst symptoms). Conclusions The patient- and caregiver-reported burden of TDT is high, influenced by disease-management time, fatigue, pain, and quality-of-life impairment. Fatigue is a distressing symptom in head & neck cancer patients before during and at the end of curative therapy. Pharmacologic and not pharmacologic treatments have been proposed with scarce or no evidence of efficacy. The aim of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of American ginseng in respect to placebo in reducing fatigue in patients treated for head and neck cancer with curative intent. Thirty-two patients who had completed oncological treatment for a primary Head & neck tumor for at least 1 year and had a global fatigue score > 4 by means of Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) were randomized to receive 1000 mg of American ginseng or placebo per day for 8 weeks with the aim to assess their efficacy. Changes in fatigue scores in the 2 subgroups of patients before and after the treatment with American ginseng or placebo, were assessed by the BFI at baseline and at the end of week 8. The mean of the mean values of the BFI measured at 8 weeks (end of treatment) was 4.6 in the Ginseng arm and 3.4 in the Placebo arm (p = ns). Mean comparison showed a tendency to statistical significance only for the single item on interference with general activity (p = 0.06), with better performance for placebo. The mean of the differences between baseline values and 8 weeks values was not significantly different between treatment arms considering the entire questionnaire. The present data shows that American ginseng has insufficient evidence to be recommended for Cancer Related Fatigue (CRF) in post treatment HNC survivors.

Although there have been many published reports on fatigue and pain in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it is considered that these symptoms are seldom, if ever, asked about during consultations in Japanese clinical practice. To bridge this gap between the literature and daily clinical experience, the authors attempted to gain a better understanding of fatigue and pain in Japanese subjects with COPD. The Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) to analyse and quantify the degree of fatigue, the revised Short–Form McGill Pain Questionnaire 2 (SF-MPQ-2) for measuring pain and the Kihon Checklist to judge whether a participant is frail and elderly were administered to 89 subjects with stable COPD. The median BFI and SF-MPQ-2 Total scores were 1.00 [IQR: 0.11–2.78] and 0.00 [IQR: 0.00–0.27], respectively. They were all skewed toward the milder end of the respective scales. A floor effect was noted in around a quarter on the BFI and over half on the SF-MPQ-2. The BFI scores were significantly different between groups regarding frailty determined by the Kihon Checklist but not between groups classified by the severity of airflow limitation. Compared to the literature, neither fatigue nor pain are considered to be frequent, important problems in a real-world Japanese clinical setting, especially among subjects with mild to moderate COPD. In addition, our results might suggest that fatigue is more closely related to frailty than COPD.

Objective. To explore the efficacy of applying Kanglaite (KLT) injection under incentive nursing intervention (INI) in treating patients with advanced penile carcinoma and its effect on patient treatment compliance. Methods. The clinical data of 120 patients with advanced penile carcinoma treated in the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University from February 2019 to February 2020 were retrospectively analyzed, and the patients were equally divided into the experimental group (n = 60) and control group (n = 60) according to their admission order. All patients received the KLT injection treatment; those in the control group accepted the conventional nursing; and on this basis, those in the experimental group accepted INI, including psychological nursing intervention, which was conducted concurrently with the treatment, to compare their short-term efficacy, treatment compliance, degree of cancer-related fatigue (Brief Fatigue Inventory), and negative emotion scores (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) between the two groups. Results. Compared with the control group, the experimental group presented a significantly higher objective remission rate (58.3%) ( P < 0.05 ), higher rates of excellent and good treatment compliance ( P < 0.05 ), and lower degree of cancer-related fatigue and negative emotion scores ( P < 0.001 ). Conclusion. INI can improve the negative emotions in patients with advanced carcinoma of the penis, alleviate their degree of cancer-related fatigue, promote their treatment compliance, and achieve a more significant efficacy of applying the KLT injection treatment, so it should be promoted in practice.

ObjectivesTo report the impact of burosumab on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and ambulatory function in adults with X-linked hypophosphataemia (XLH) through 96 weeks.MethodsAdults diagnosed with XLH were randomised 1:1 in a double-blinded trial to receive subcutaneous burosumab 1 mg/kg or placebo every 4 weeks for 24 weeks (NCT02526160). Thereafter, all subjects received burosumab every 4 weeks until week 96. PROs were measured using the Western Ontario and the McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form (BPI-SF) and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), and ambulatory function was measured with the 6 min walk test (6MWT).ResultsSubjects (N=134) were randomised to burosumab (n=68) or placebo (n=66) for 24 weeks. At baseline, subjects experienced pain, stiffness, and impaired physical and ambulatory function. At week 24, subjects receiving burosumab achieved statistically significant improvement in some BPI-SF scores, BFI worst fatigue (average and greatest) and WOMAC stiffness. At week 48, all WOMAC and BPI-SF scores achieved statistically significant improvement, with some WOMAC and BFI scores achieving meaningful and significant change from baseline. At week 96, all WOMAC, BPI-SF and BFI achieved statistically significant improvement, with selected scores in all measures also achieving meaningful change. Improvement in 6MWT distance and percent predicted were statistically significant at all time points from 24 weeks.ConclusionsAdults with XLH have substantial burden of disease as assessed by PROs and 6MWT. Burosumab treatment improved phosphate homoeostasis and was associated with a steady and consistent improvement in PROs and ambulatory function.Trial registration numberNCT02526160.

Fatigue is the most reported and most distressing symptom among patients with cancer. However, no questionnaire that measures fatigue and fatigue interference with life has been translated into Arabic.This study aimed to translate and validate the Arabic version of the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI-A).The BFI was translated into Arabic using the forward-backward translation technique. This cross-sectional study collected data from cancer patients through a self-administered questionnaire that included the BFI-A, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Zung Depression Scale (ZDS), MD Anderson Symptom Inventory total score (MDASI), and Medical Outcome Study Short Form 36 (SF-36) Vitality Subscale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used including mean, standard deviation, internal consistency, and correlation coefficient using Pearson's correlation.A total of 79 patients were recruited in Amman, Jordan, in 2015. Mean of the total BFI-A was 4.01 (2.4), showing that 83.5% had nonsevere fatigue. Cronbach's α coefficient of the BFI-A was 0.93. The correlations between total BFI-A scores and BFI-A items were significant (P0.05) and ranged from 0.75 to 0.86. Cependant, aucun questionnaire mesurant la fatigue et son interférence avec la vie quotidienne n’a été traduit en arabe.La présente étude visait à traduire et à valider la version arabe du Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI-A).Le BFI a été traduit en arabe à l’aide de la technique de traduction/rétro-traduction. La présente étude transversale a permis de collecter des données de patients atteints de cancer en recourant à un auto-questionnaire comprenant le BFI-A, l’index de Sévérité de l’Insomnie (ISI), l’échelle d’auto-évaluation de la dépression de Zung (ZDS), l’inventaire des symptômes M.D. Anderson (MDASI) et la sous-échelle vitalité de la forme abrégée du questionnaire généraliste SF-36 (qualité de vie) du Medical Outcome Study. Des statistiques descriptives et inférentielles ont été utilisées, y compris la moyenne, l’écart type, la cohérence interne et le coefficient de corrélation de Pearson.79 patients au total ont été recrutés à Amman (Jordanie) en 2015. La moyenne totale du BFI-A était de 4,01 (2,4), indiquant que 83,5 % des patients présentaient un état de fatigue non sévère. Le coefficient alpha de Cronbach du BFI-A était de 0,93. Les corrélations entre les scores totaux et les rubriques du BFI-A étaient significatives (p0,05) et étaient comprises entre 0,75 et 0,86. Le BFI-A affichait une corrélation importante (p0,05) avec les instruments suivants : ISI = 0,70 ; ZDS = 0,69 ; MDASI = 0,75 et la sous-échelle vitalité du SF-36 (qualité de vie) = −0,57.La présente étude suggère que le BFI-A est un outil valable et fiable pour évaluer la fatigue chez les patients arabes atteints de cancer.

Cancer affects the neurophysiological changes in skeletal muscle progressively and leading to cancer-related fatigue (CRF). Acupressure therapy can stimulate local microcirculation improvement and increasing physical performance. The purpose was determine the influence of acupressure therapy on CRF in cancer patients. The design used pre-experiment one group pre-test post-test design. Samples were 30 cancer patients living at the Indonesian Cancer Foundation East Java Branch taken by purposive technique based on inclusion criteria. The instrument was the Brief Fatigue Inventory. Acupressure therapy is given to acupoint C6, GB20, P6, Li4, Li11, Sp 6, St 36, 2 times per week for 4 weeks. Statistics was verified with Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test p < 0.05. Result showed the effect of acupressure therapy on CRF p = 0.000. Acupressure therapy can activate acupoint on the meridians, stimulating myelin nerves in the muscles and impulses into the central nervous system and can facilitate the reduction fatigue.

Background and purpose Fatigue is one of the most prevalent adverse events reported by cancer patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between traditional Chinese medicine body constitution (TCMBC) and moderate-to-severe cancer-related fatigue in cancer patients. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on cancer patients recruited from a regional hospital in southern Taiwan. The association between TCMBC, measured using the Constitution in Chinese Medicine Questionnaire (CCMQ) and moderate-to-severe cancer-related fatigue (based on the Taiwanese version of the Brief Fatigue Inventory score ≥ 4) was evaluated using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results Of the 170 participants, 37 (21.8%) had moderate-to-severe fatigue. Yang-deficiency (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.50–8.40) and Qi-deficiency (aOR = 2.84, 95% CI = 1.18–6.82) TCMBC were significantly associated with moderate-to-severe cancer-related fatigue. Conclusion TCMBC could be used as a clinical tool to identify cancer patients prone to experience moderate-to-severe cancer-related fatigue, and to provide Chinese medicine practitioners a basis for selecting an appropriate treatment approach based on TCMBC.

Its causes are secondary to their treatment course, cancer itself and associated factors.Purpose: To assess the prevalence of fatigue and associated factors among cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2019.Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted on cancer patients undergoing treatment in Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. A sample of 278 was selected using systematic random sampling technique and Brief Fatigue Inventory questionnaire was used for data collection. The data were entered into EPI data version 3.1 and transferred to SPSS version 24 for analysis. Bivariate and multivariable logistic regression were conducted to summarize the data. The significant statistical test was determined at 95% confidence interval and at p< 0.05.Results: The mean age of the participants was 44.9 ± 14 years. The prevalence of fatigue identified by this study was 208 (74.8%). Age, stage of cancer, presence of infection, type of cancer, and type of treatment had shown a significant association with fatigue [AOR = 3.15, 95% CI: (1.35– 7.34)], [AOR = 0.02, 95% CI: (0.003– 0.172)], [AOR = 4.15, 95% CI: (1.06– 16.07)], [AOR = 5.19, 95% CI: (1.59– 16.90)], [AOR = 0.18, 95% CI: (0.07– 0.462)] respectively.Conclusion: The prevalence of fatigue in cancer patients in this study was high. Objective This randomized controlled parallel-group trial was conducted to investigate the effect of slow-stroke back massage (SSBM) on the level of fatigue in women with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Methods Sixty-four women with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy were randomly assigned to SSBMG (n:32), who received SSBM, and CG (n:32), who received routine treatment only. Women with breast cancer in the intervention group received slow-stroke back massage for a total of 20 minutes, 10 minutes before and after each chemotherapy infusion (2nd, 3rd, and 4th cycle). The Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) was completed before and after three cycles of chemotherapy (2nd, 3rd, and 4th) to assess the level of fatigue in women with breast cancer. Results After using SSBM, the BFI score was significantly lower in SSBMG than in CG (p 0.001) at all three-time points (1st, 2nd, and 3rd-time points). While the within-group change (Δ) in SSBMG differed significantly between time points (p = 0.018, η2 = 0.14), in contrast, the within-group change (Δ) in CG was found not to differ between time points. Conclusion This study has shown that SSBM, one of the non-pharmacological methods, has a positive effect on the level of fatigue in women with breast cancer.

Background: Many patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) experience fatigue due to their disease process and its long period of treatment. Using nonpharmacological methods to help reduce their fatigue is a reasonable endeavor. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of Benson’s relaxation technique on fatigue levels in patients after HSCT. Materials and Methods: Thirty‑seven patients were randomly selected to the intervention (n = 19) and control group (n = 18). In the intervention group, the participants performed Benson’s relaxation exercises for 20 min twice per day over a period of 15 days. The data collection tools used included a demographic and medical information form and the Brief Fatigue Inventory, completed by both groups on three different occasions (upon admission and days 8 and 14 after the HSCT). The data obtained were analyzed in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version‑20 using statistical tests. Results: The results of the independent t‑test showed no significant preintervention differences in fatigue levels between the two groups. On days 8 (t = 11.21, p < 0.001) and 14 after the transplant (t = 15.62, p < 0.001), a significant difference was observed in the mean level of fatigue between the two groups. Conclusions: These findings indicate that Benson’s relaxation technique would improve fatigue in HSCT patients.

Background and aim of the work: Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is one of the most common symptoms experienced by cancer patients (CPs) and negatively affects quality of life. Although CRF is frequently experienced, it is often underreported, underdiagnosed and undertreated. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the level of fatigue in patients with pancreatic cancer undergoing chemotherapy and to analyse its correlation with patients’ demographic and clinical variables. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was implemented in the Oncology Day Hospital of a Northern Italian hospital. A sample of 48 patients receiving chemotherapy were evaluated through the Brief Fatigue Inventory Italian version (BFI-I) between 1 May and 12 October 2016. Data were statistically analysed. Results: Most of our patients (94%) experienced fatigue. Women as well as patients with an age ≥65 years reported more fatigue. Anemia, pain and a weight loss of over 16 kg in the last 6 months were significantly related to the perception of fatigue. Regarding life habits, smoking was related to high global score of BFI-I. Conclusions: In accordance with literature, our study suggests that fatigue is a frequent symptom influenced by many constitutional, clinical and environmental factors. Our results highlight the need for an early and regular evaluation of fatigue among cancer patients, in order to implement all those pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions with proven efficacy in attenuating this symptom.

In addition to dyspnea and fatigue, pain is a prevalent symptom in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Understanding the relative prevalence, magnitude, and interference with aspects of daily living of these symptoms can improve COPD management. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to: (1) compare the prevalence and magnitude of dyspnea, fatigue, and pain and how each limits aspects of daily living; (2) determine the association between pain and the other two symptoms; and (3) assess the impact of these symptoms on quality of life in COPD. Participants were recruited from pulmonary rehabilitation programs. Pain, dyspnea, and fatigue were measured using the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), and Dyspnea Inventory (DI), respectively. Quality of life was measured using the Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ). The prevalence of dyspnea, fatigue, and pain were 93%, 77%, and 74%, respectively. Individuals with COPD reported similar severity scores of the three symptoms. Dyspnea interfered with general activity more than pain (F1.7,79.9 = 3.1, p < 0.05), whilst pain interfered with mood (F1.8, 82.7 = 3.6, p < 0.05) and sleep (F1,46 = 7.4, p < 0.01) more than dyspnea and fatigue. These three symptoms were moderately-to-highly correlated with each other (ρ = 0.49-0.78, p < 0.01) and all individually impacted quality of life. In summary, pain is a common symptom in addition to dyspnea and fatigue in COPD; all three interfere similarly among aspects of daily living with some exceptions. Accordingly, management of COPD should include a multifaceted approach that addresses pain as well as dyspnea and fatigue.

Introdução: o câncer do colo do útero (CCU) acarreta prejuízos físicos e emocionais, sendo um grande problema de saúde pública. Objetivo: avaliar fadiga, capacidade funcional e qualidade de vida antes e após o tratamento com quimiorradioterapia para o CCU. Métodos: a avaliação de fadiga e qualidade de vida foi realizada por meio dos questionários: Inventário Breve de Fadiga (BFI) e Functional Assessment of Chronic Therapy – Cervix Cancer (FACT-Cx), respectivamente, já a capacidade funcional por mensuração direta pelo Teste do degrau (TD6). Participaram 11 mulheres com CCU. O Graphpad Prism® foi utilizado para estatística. Resultados: após a quimiorradioterapia houve aumento significativo da fadiga (de 2,80 para 4,83), redução significativa da qualidade de vida (de 107,8 para 88,1) e redução da capacidade funcional (de 91 degraus para 82 degraus). Conclusão: aumento da fadiga e redução da qualidade de vida foram observados uma semana após a realização de quimiorradioterapia para o CCU.

Objective: The objective of this cross-sectional, noninterventional 3-month observational study was to analyze the prevalence of the cancer-related fatigue (CRF) in cancer patient populations with correlation of CRF with different treatment modalities. Materials and Methods: A descriptive study was carried out jointly by the pharmacology and oncology departments of a tertiary care center in the Malwa region of Punjab. The data collection was performed by administering the validated Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) after obtaining the informed consent. Results: One hundred and twenty-six cancer patients were recruited with the mean age of 49.13 years ± 14.35 (standard deviation). There are statistical correlations found between fatigue and chemotherapy agents such as vinblastine, dacarbazine, and cyclophosphamide. Conclusion: We observed that CRF is a symptom that is experienced by majority of cancer patients, irrespective of the diagnosis, or type of treatment received. In addition, assessing CRF before and after treatment will facilitate health-care practitioner to treat this symptom.

Fatigue arising from excessive work demands is a known safety challenge in hospital nurses. This study aimed to determine which measures of work demands during nursing work are most predictive of hospital nurse fatigue levels at the end of the work shift. Measures of work demands of registered nurses from two hospital units in the United States were collected from organizational data sources, wearable sensors, and questionnaires. Fatigue levels were measured at the start and end of each shift using the Brief Fatigue Inventory. Multilevel linear regression analysis was used to predict end of shift fatigue based on work demand variables. The best fit model included multiple variables from organizational data sources and a physical activity variable measured by a wearable sensor. Organizational data can be used to create dynamic measures of work demands as they occur and predict end of shift fatigue levels in hospital nurses.

Background Fatigue is a complex syndrome associated with exhaustion not relieved by sleep. It occurs frequently in older adults in the context of chronic disease and is associated with decreased physical capacity. Whether a mitochondrial dysfunction and therefore an impaired energy production might contribute to the development of fatigue during aging is yet unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate mitochondrial respiration of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in older patients with and without fatigue. Method Fatigue was determined according to the Brief Fatigue Inventory. Mitochondrial respiration of freshly isolated PBMCs was investigated by high-resolution respirometry using the Oroboros Oxygraph-O2k. Functional impairment and depressive symptoms were assessed using questionnaires. Results 23 geriatric patients (77.8 ± 4.9 years; 43.5% female) with fatigue and 22 without fatigue (75.4 ± 5.4 years; 45.5% female) were analyzed. Patients with fatigue exhibited more functional limitations and more depressive symptoms. High-resolution respirometry of intact PBMCs revealed a lower routine (4.82 ± 1.14 pmol/s versus 5.89 ± 1.90 pmol/s, p = 0.041) and maximum (6.55 ± 1.51 pmol/s versus 8.43 ± 3.67 pmol/s, p = 0.013) oxygen consumption rate, resulting in a reduced ATP-linked respiration (4.26 ± 1.00 pmol/s versus 5.09 ± 1.53 pmol/s, p = 0.035) of PBMCs from geriatric patients with fatigue compared to controls without. Conclusions This short report shows that in this group of older patients, fatigue is associated with lower PBMC mitochondrial respiration. Whether the impaired mitochondrial respiration is accompanied by a reduced mitochondrial activity in other organs (e.g. muscle) remains to be elucidated.

Purpose:Sipjeondaebo-tang (SDT) is a widely used traditional herbal medicine for relieving fatigue. This randomized, placebo-controlled, preliminary study evaluated SDT for cancer-related fatigue, which is the most common symptom experienced by patients with cancer.Patients and Methods:Patients with a Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) score of at least 4 were randomly assigned in a double-blinded manner to receive SDT (3 g 3 times daily) or placebo orally for 3 weeks. The BFI was the primary outcome measure and secondary outcome measures included the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), immunoregulatory tests, and safety.Results:A total of 50 participants were randomly assigned and 48 patients completed the trial. Based on intention-to-treat analysis, fatigue, which was the primary outcome, was improved in both arms compared with the baseline, and was significantly better in the SDT group than in the placebo group at week 3 (3.56 ± 1.18 vs 4.63 ± 1.83, P = .019). Secondary outcomes, including anxiety, depression, and immunoregulatory tests, did not improve significantly in either group. However, quality of life measured using the EORTC QLQ-C30 improved in both arms compared with the baseline, and the global health subscale was significantly better in the SDT group than in the placebo group ( P = .02). No significant toxicities were observed.Conclusion:SDT may improve cancer-related fatigue and quality of life in patients with cancer. A further randomized clinical trial with large sample size is warranted.

Purpose: Cancer chemotherapy can induce fatigue in about 20% to 30% of patients. So far, there is very little information as to the predictors of chemotherapy-induced fatigue (CIF). We evaluated potential predictors of CIF in a sample of patients with cancer with several types of solid tumors scheduled to receive chemotherapy according to institutional protocols. Methods: Before their first and second chemotherapy cycles, patients answered to the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI), Chalder, Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), Stress thermometer, and HADS questionnaires as well as provided blood samples for inflammatory markers. Results: We evaluated 52 patients, 37 (71%) were female and mean age was 53 years. The most common tumors were breast cancer 21 (40%) and gastrointestinal tumors 12 (23%). Although 14 (25.2%) patients had an increase in their fatigue BFI scores equal or above 3 points from baseline, we observed no significant overall differences between BFI scores before and after chemotherapy. The only 2 factors associated with an increase of 3 points in the BFI scores after chemotherapy were race and higher baseline BFI levels. By multivariate analysis, overall BFI and Chalder scores after chemotherapy also correlated significantly with their respective baseline scores before treatment. HADS scores before treatment correlated with overall BFI scores postchemotherapy, whereas MNA scores before chemotherapy and female sex correlated with higher Chalder scores after treatment. Conclusion: We conclude that fatigue induced by chemotherapy is common and consistently associated with higher fatigue scores before treatment. Screening for fatigue before chemotherapy may help to identify patients who are prone to develop CIF.

Background and Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most highly prevalent and life-threatening digestive tract cancers. CRC and its treatment are associated with numerous complications in the patients. Orem's self-care model is a theory on clinical improvement and reducing fatigue in patients with CRC. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Orem's self-care theory on the nutrition status and fatigue of CRC patients. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 70 patients diagnosed with CRC in the teaching hospital of Imam Reza in Kermanshah, Iran in 2014. Samples were randomly divided into two groups of experimental and control. Data were collected using the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). After data collection, a self-care training program was implemented based on Orem's self-care theory. Results: Self-care training intervention in the experimental group improved the consumption patterns of fruits (P=0.002), vegetables (P=0.001), and dairy products (P=0.001). Moreover, general fatigue of CRC patients in the experimental group decreased after the intervention (P=0.0001). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, Orem's self-care model could reduce the clinical symptoms and fatigue of patients with CRC. Therefore, it is recommended that this model be applied to enhance the self-care behaviors and clinical conditions of CRC patients.
