The sombric horizon is a diagnostic subsurface horizon defined in the soil classification system of the United States (Soil Taxonomy) and FAO (WRB), used to classify the soil at different categorical levels. The sombric horizon has a soil color darker than the overlying surface(s) horizon(s), and must show illuvial humus accumulation features, though they are not associated with aluminum (Al), as in the spodic horizon, nor associated with sodium (Na), as in the natric horizon. There are also criteria to distinguish it from buried A horizons. However, since the first references and proposed concept of the sombric horizon in African soils made by Sys and co-workers in the 1960s, and adopted by the Soil Taxonomy edition of 1975, few modifications have been made to its definition. Moreover, the pedogenic process involved in illuvial humus accumulation in these horizons remains inadequately clarified, making the distinction between the sombric and spodic or buried A horizon difficult and unclear. This review reports the historical evolution of the sombric horizon concept, its definition and inconsistencies under different soil classification systems, and the current hypothesis, together with its fragilities, proposed to explain the soil illuvial humus accumulation. Although it is recognized that further research is necessary, alternative criteria are proposed for the definition of the sombric horizon in the Brazilian System of Soil Classification.

No Brasil, boa parte dos plantios florestais tem sido realizada em solos que apresentam algum grau de degradação física, química ou biológica. A proteção ao solo fornecida pelas árvores, em função da deposição de serapilheira, constitui um dos processos de recuperação de áreas degradadas, e, como a matéria orgânica está relacionada com muitos dos atributos físicos, químicos e biológicos do solo, ela se caracteriza como um fator-chave na manutenção da qualidade ambiental de sistemas florestais. Assim, objetivou-se neste trabalho caracterizar frações da matéria orgânica em solos sob cultivo mínimo de eucalipto com diferentes históricos de uso e posições na paisagem. O estudo foi realizado em três hortos florestais (HFs): Terra Dura, Canafístula e Sanga das Pedras, cultivados com eucalipto no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Os solos foram amostrados nas profundidades de 0-5, 5-20 e 20-40 cm. Na profundidade de 0-5 cm, a maioria dos Argissolos dos HFs estudados apresentou teores de carbono orgânico (CO) superiores aos de matas nativas adjacentes. Nas áreas cultivadas, há maior armazenamento de CO no HF Canafístula, sendo notados, em geral, menores teores de CO no terço inferior da encosta em relação às outras posições das topossequências avaliadas. O índice de humificação, em geral, é maior nas áreas de mata em comparação às áreas cultivadas; contudo, ele varia em função da profundidade do solo, da posição amostrada na topossequência e do HF avaliado. Nas profundidades de 0-5 e 5-20 cm, a abundância natural de 13C dos HFs é similar à das áreas de mata nativa, porém há maior teor de 13C na camada mais profunda dos solos cultivados, o que sinaliza para a contribuição à matéria orgânica do solo (MOS) de C oriundo das pastagens que antecederam o eucalipto. In Brazil, most forest stands have been planted on soils with some degree of physical, chemical or biological degradation. The protection of the trees for the soil, depending on the litter deposition, is a driving force of the restoration process of degraded areas. Since organic matter is related to many of the physical, chemical and biological soil properties, it is characterized as a key factor for the maintenance of the environmental quality of forest systems. The purpose of this study was to characterize organic matter fractions in soils with eucalyptus under minimum tillage from positions in the landscape with different histories of soil use. The study was conducted in three forest stands (FST): Terra Dura, Canafístula and Sanga das Pedras with eucalyptus in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The soils were sampled in the layers 0-5, 5-20 and 20-40 cm. In the 0-5 cm layer of the Ultisols, most FST studied had a higher organic carbon (OC) content than in adjacent native forest. In cultivated areas, the OC storage was greatest in FST Canafístula, with, in general, lower OC levels in the footslope in relation to the other toposequence positions. In general, the humification index was greater in forests than in the crop areas, but it varied according to the soil depth, the sampled toposequence position and the FST. In the 0-5 and 5-20 cm layer, the natural abundance of 13C in FSTs was similar to the native forests, however, the 13C levels were higher in the deepest layer of the cultivated soils, indicating the contribution to soil organic matter (SOM) of C derived from the pastures that preceded eucalyptus.

Dark subsurface horizons, with properties similar to the sombric horizon characterized by the USA Soil Taxonomy, are frequent in Southern Brazil. The genesis of this horizon is controversial and poorly understood. This study aimed to describe the occurrence of sombric-like horizons in Ultisols in the South of Santa Catarina State, at low altitudes, and suggest possible processes of humus transference, accumulation and persistence in these horizons. Physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of four Ultisols were evaluated; three were sampled in a toposequence, and another representative one in an isolated profile (RSP). The dark subsurface horizons coincide with the AB and BA transitional genetic horizons; they are acid, low in base saturation, and have a similar clay mineralogy in all horizons. Very high amounts of Fe and Al extracted by ammonium oxalate and sodium pyrophosphate solution as well as maximum Al extracted by CuCl2 solution were observed in these dark subsurface horizons, indicating a possible migration of these elements in the form of organometallic complexes. The contents of Al plus ½ Fe extracted from the RSP soil horizons with ammonium oxalate indicated spodic materials in the sombric-like horizon, although the soil morphology was not compatible with Spodosols. Maximum contents of fine clay were also found in the sombric-like horizon, suggesting Fe and Al migration as clay-humic substances. However, the hypothesis that sombric-like horizons in these soils are a relict feature of a grass paleovegetation, different from the current dense seasonal forest, should not be discarded but investigated in further studies. Horizontes subsuperficiais escuros, similares ao sômbrico da Soil Taxonomy (EUA), são frequentes em solos do Sul do Brasil. A gênese desse horizonte, entretanto, é controvertida, havendo poucos estudos sobre o tema. O presente trabalho objetivou descrever a ocorrência de horizontes com morfologia similar à do sômbrico em Argissolos do extremo sul de Santa Catarina, em condições de baixa altitude, bem como sugerir possíveis mecanismos responsáveis pela transferência, acumulação e permanência do húmus nesses horizontes. Foram descritos e amostrados três perfis de Argissolos Vermelhos numa topossequência e num perfil isolado, representativo dessa classe de solo, os quais foram avaliados quanto a vários atributos físicos, químicos e mineralógicos. Os horizontes subsuperficiais escuros coincidem com horizontes genéticos AB e, ou, BA, são ácidos e pobres em bases e têm mineralogia da fração argila similar à dos horizontes sub e sobrejacentes. Os valores máximos de Fe e Al extraídos com oxalato de amônio e com pirofostato de sódio ocorreram nesses horizontes transicionais escuros, assim como o teor de Al extraído com solução de CuCl2, indicando possível migração destes elementos na forma de compostos organometálicos. Os teores de Al + ½ Fe extraídos com oxalato de amônio nos horizontes sômbricos são compatíveis com os teores da definição de material espódico, embora o solo não apresente morfologia compatível com a dos solos da classe Espodossolo. Máximos valores de argila fina também foram constatados no horizonte sômbrico, sugerindo que o Fe e o Al possam ter migrado na forma de compostos argilo-húmicos. Entretanto, não pode ser desconsiderada a hipótese (que necessita de maiores investigações para sua comprovação) de que estes horizontes sômbricos sejam uma feição relíquia de uma paleovegetação graminosa diferente da atual floresta estacional densa.
