To address the issues of complex background in foreign object images, weak feature extraction, low detection accuracy for adhering small objects, and distortion in detection box positioning and scale, a foreign object detection algorithm for mining conveyor belts based on YOLOv5n-CND is proposed. First, the C2f module was used to optimize the feature pyramid, using fewer parameters to address the issue of poor sensitivity to small object detection caused by the complex background in foreign object images and interference from complex objects in underground environments. Second, the normalized Gaussian Wasserstein distance (NWD) regression loss function was used to replace CIoU, improving the performance of multi-scale foreign object detection and accurately predicting the detection of adhering small objects. Finally, a detection head (DyHead) was added, combining three attention mechanisms: scale, spatial, and task, to enhance feature extraction for foreign object contours and improve the adaptability to multi-scale targets. Experimental results demonstrated that YOLOv5n-CND achieved an mAP@0.5 of 87.9%, an mAP@0.5:0.95 of 55.9%, a parameter count of 4.49×106, and a detection speed of 85.5 frames per second, meeting the requirements for underground foreign object detection in coal mines. The mAP@0.5 and mAP@0.5:0.95 of YOLOv5n-CND were 2.6% and 3.4% higher than YOLOv5n, and 1.7% and 3.8% higher than YOLOv5s-CBAM, respectively. Although the model’s parameter count slightly increased compared to the YOLOv5n model, it was still lower than that of other models. Tests were conducted in four scenarios: foreign objects with elongated shapes resembling the background; anchor bolts with relatively low lighting; objects heavily mixed with coal gangue; and multiple foreign objects. The results indicated that the foreign object detection algorithm for mining conveyor belts based on YOLOv5n-CND did not result in false detections or duplicate detections, with very few missed detections. The detection box positioning was accurate, and the handling of adhering small objects was more effective, enabling precise detection of foreign objects on conveyor belts.

Abstract Global climate change has triggered frequent extreme weather events, leading to a significant increase in the frequency and intensity of forest fires. Traditional fire monitoring methods such as manual inspections, sensor technologies, and remote sensing satellites have limitations. With the advancement of drone technology and deep learning, using drones combined with artificial intelligence for fire monitoring has become mainstream. This paper proposes an improved YOLOv8-based model that incorporates local convolution instead of full convolution in the C2F module and integrates the EMA module to enhance the feature channel interaction modeling capability and contextual information utilization, thereby reducing model complexity and increasing efficiency. Additionally, in order to address the risk of false positives and missed detections caused by vegetation, terrain, and lighting changes in forests, we have introduced the AgentAttention module in the Backbone. This module combines Softmax and linear attention to optimize feature extraction, improving the model’s accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, in order to tackle the challenges of detecting flames and smoke at different scales and angles, we have designed the BiFormer module, which adaptively fuses global and local features, significantly enhancing the model’s multi-scale and multi-angle detection capability. Experimental results show that the improved model achieves Precision and Recall of 93.57% and 88.51%, respectively, representing improvements of 5.05% and 2.72% over the original model. It also optimizes FPS, GFLOPs, and Params by 14.3%, 25%, and 19.7%, respectively. This research has significant application prospects in forest fire early warning, emergency response, and loss reduction, while also providing strong technical support for forest resource protection and public safety.

Perception is difficult in video surveillance applications because of the presence of dynamic objects and constant environmental changes. This problem worsens when bad weather, including snow, rain, fog, dark nights, and bright daylight, interferes with the quality of perception. The proposed work aims to enhance the accuracy of camera-based perception for human activity detection in video surveillance during adverse weather conditions. To identify primary human activities, including walking on the road during severe weather, transfer learning from many adverse conditions using realtime images or videos has been proposed as an improvement for you look only once v8 (YOLOv8)-based human activity recognition in poor weather conditions. We collected and sorted training rates into frames from videos depicting human walking activity, their combined forms, and other subgroups, such as running and standing, based on their characteristics. The assessment of the detection efficiency of the previously described images and subgroups led to a comparison of the training weights. The use of realtime activity images for training greatly enhanced the detection performance when comparing the proposed test results to the existing YOLO base weights. Furthermore, a notable improvement in human activity efficiency was obtained by utilizing extra images and feature-related combinations of data techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detecting surface defects in bamboo strips is essential for producing Asian bamboo products. Currently, the detection of surface defects in bamboo strips mainly relies on manual labor. The labor intensity is high, and the detection efficiency is low. Improving the speed and accuracy of identifying bamboo strip defects is crucial in enhancing enterprises' production efficiency. Hence, this research designs a lightweight YOLOv5s neural network algorithm using the Ghost module to identify surface defects of bamboo strips. The research introduces an attention mechanism CA module to improve the recognition ability of the model target; the research also implements a C2f model to enhance the network performance and the surface quality of bamboo strips. The experimental results show that after training with the acquired image dataset, the YOLOv5s model can exert an intelligent detection effect on five common types of defects in bamboo strips, and the Ghost module makes YOLOv5s lightweight, which can effectively reduce model parameters and improve detection speed while maintaining recognition accuracy. The underwater environment is complex and diverse, making it challenging to locate aquatic organisms accurately. The precise identification of underwater animals is crucial for ecological research and fisheries management. Addressing the issue of inaccurate localization of small underwater targets, this study introduces a novel model, YOLOv8-2PCC, based on the YOLOv8 algorithm with improvements. First, to improve the efficiency of the YOLOv8 network, the C2F module in the original YOLOv8 network model was replaced with convolution to reduce the computational load of the model. Secondly, the up-sampling operator CARAFE is employed, which excels in capturing features at various scales. Finally, a small target detection layer has been incorporated to extract additional shallow features, effectively enhancing the model's ability to detect small targets. Utilizing the URPC dataset for training and testing, the results indicate that our proposed algorithm achieves a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 85.9%. Compared to YOLOv8n, there is a 4.4% improvement, effectively enhancing the accuracy of underwater organism detection in complex underwater environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal infrared detection technology can enable night vision and is robust in complex environments, making it highly advantageous for various fields. However, infrared images have low resolution and high noise, resulting in limited detailed information being available about the target object. This difficulty is further amplified when detecting small targets, which are prone to occlusion. In response to these challenges, we propose a model for infrared target detection designed to achieve efficient feature representation. Firstly, an interval sampling weighted (ISW) module is proposed, which strengthens the fusion network's spatial relationship modeling, thereby elevating the model's generalization capability across diverse target-density regions. Next, a detection head founded on 3D attention (TAHNet) is introduced, which helps the network more comprehensively understand the feature details of the target. This enhances the accuracy of the model in identifying the target object's location, reduces false positives and false negatives, and optimizes the network's performance. Furthermore, to our model, we introduce the C2f module to transfer gradient information across multiple branches. The features learned using diverse branches interact and fuse in subsequent stages, further enhancing the model's representation ability and understanding of the target. Experimental outcomes validate the efficacy of the proposed model, showcasing state-of-the-art detection performance on FLIR and KAIST thermal infrared datasets and showing strong antiocclusion and robustness in complex scenes.
