The aim is to inform clinicians, patients, and health-care policy makers about strategies of survivorship care for cured cancer patients and consequences impacting patient lives, spurring public health authorities and research organizations to implement resources to the purpose. Two identifiable, measurable, and reproducible indicators of cancer cure are presented. Cure fraction (CF) is > 60% for breast and prostate cancer patients, > 50% for colorectal cancer patients, and > 70% for patients with melanoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and cancers of corpus uteri, testis (> 90%), and thyroid. CF was > 65% for patients diagnosed at ages 15– 44 years and 30% for those aged 65– 74 years. Time-to-cure was consistently < 1 year for thyroid and testicular cancer patients and < 10 years for patients with colorectal and cervical cancers, melanoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma. The working group agrees that the evidence allows risk stratification of cancer patients and implementation of personalized care models for timely diagnosis, as well as treatment of possible cancer relapses or related long-term complications, and preventive measures aimed at maintaining health status of cured patients. These aspects should be integrated to produce an appropriate follow-up program and survivorship care plan(s), avoiding stigma and supporting return to work, to a reproductive life, and full rehabilitation. The “right to be forgotten” law, adopted to date only in a few European countries, may contribute to these efforts for cured patients.Keywords: cancer cure, survivorship, time-to-cure, personalized care models, right to be forgotten

Background: While the evidence base on web-based cancer misinformation continues to develop, relatively little is known about the extent of such information on the world's largest e-commerce website, Amazon. Multiple media reports indicate that Amazon may host on its platform questionable cancer-related products for sale, such as books on purported cancer cures. This context suggests an urgent need to evaluate Amazon.com for cancer misinformation., Objective: This study sought to (1) examine to what extent are misleading cancer cure books for sale on Amazon.com and (2) determine how cancer cure books on Amazon.com provide misleading cancer information., Methods: We searched "cancer cure" on Amazon.com and retrieved the top 1000 English-language book search results. We reviewed the books' descriptions and titles to determine whether the books provided misleading cancer cure or treatment information. We considered a book to be misleading if it suggested scientifically unsupported cancer treatment approaches to cure or meaningfully treat cancer. Among books coded as misleading, we conducted an inductive latent thematic analysis to determine the informational value the books sought to offer., Results: Nearly half (494/1000, 49.4%) of the sampled "cancer cure" books for sale on Amazon.com appeared to contain misleading cancer treatment and cure information. Overall, 17 (51.5%) out of 33 Amazon.com results pages had 50% or more of the books coded as misleading. The first search result page had the highest percentage of misleading books (23/33, 69.7%). Misleading books (n=494) contained eight themes: (1) claims of efficacious cancer cure strategies (n=451, 91.3%), (2) oversimplifying cancer and cancer treatment (n=194, 39.3%), (3) falsely justifying ineffective treatments as science based (n=189, 38.3%), (4) discrediting conventional cancer treatments (n=169, 34.2%), (5) finding the true cause of cancer (n=133, 26.9%), (6) homogenizing cancer (n=132, 26.7%), (7) discovery of new cancer treatments (n=119, 24.1%), and (8) cancer cure suppression (n=82, 16.6%)., Conclusions: The results demonstrate that misleading cancer cure books are for sale, visible, and prevalent on Amazon.com, with prominence in initial search hits. These misleading books for sale on Amazon can be conceived of as forming part of a wider, cross-platform, web-based information environment in which misleading cancer cures are often given prominence. What, precisely, are we seeking to achieve in offering 'life-saving' treatment to patients with cancer? Research funding agencies and pharmaceutical industry media releases, and government cancer screening programs all promise that their cancer programs save lives. But everybody dies. The nature of life and death from cancer is explored philosophically in this essay, with particular reference to the quality of life, and its meaning, during the period of prolongation of survival by 'life-saving' cancer care. Background: The number and projections of cancer survivors are necessary to meet the healthcare needs of patients, while data on cure prevalence, that is, the percentage of patients who will not die of cancer by time since diagnosis, are lacking., Materials and Methods: Data from Italian cancer registries (duration of registration ranged from 9 to 40 years, with a median of 22 years) covering 47% of the population were used to calculate the limited-duration prevalence, the complete prevalence in 2018, projections to 2030, and cure prevalence, by cancer type, sex, age, and time since diagnosis., Results: A total of 3 347 809 people were alive in Italy in 2018 after a cancer diagnosis, corresponding to 5.6% of the resident population. They will increase by 1.5% per year to 4 012 376 in 2030, corresponding to 6.9% of the resident population, 7.6% of women and ∼22% after age 75 years. In 2030, more than one-half of all prevalent cases (2 million) will have been diagnosed by ≥10 years. Those with breast (1.05 million), prostate (0.56 million), or colorectal cancers (0.47 million) will be 52% of all prevalent patients. Cure prevalence was 86% for all patients alive in 2018 (87% for patients with breast cancer and 99% for patients with thyroid or testicular cancer), increasing with time since diagnosis to 93% for patients alive after 5 years and 96% after 10 years. Among patients who survived at least 5 years, the excess risk of death (1 - cure prevalence) was <5% for patients with most cancer types except for those with cancers of the breast (8.3%), lung (11.1%), kidney (13.2%), and bladder (15.5%)., Conclusions: Study findings encourage the implementation of evidence-based policies aimed at improving long-term clinical follow-up and rehabilitation of people living after cancer diagnosis throughout the course of the disease. Abstract Background Increasing evidence of cure for some neoplasms has emerged in recent years. The study aimed to estimate population‐based indicators of cancer cure. Methods Information on more than half a million cancer patients aged 15‐74 years collected by population‐based Italian cancer registries and mixture cure models were used to estimate the life expectancy of fatal tumors (LEFT), proportions of patients with similar death rates of the general population (cure fraction), and time to reach 5‐year conditional relative survival (CRS) >90% or 95% (time to cure). Results Between 1990 and 2000, the median LEFT increased >1 year for breast (from 8.1 to 9.4 years) and prostate cancers (from 5.2 to 7.4 years). Median LEFT in 1990 was >5 years for testicular cancers (5.8) and Hodgkin lymphoma (6.3) below 45 years of age. In both sexes, it was ≤0.5 years for pancreatic cancers and NHL in 1990 and in 2000. The cure fraction showed a 10% increase between 1990 and 2000. It was 95% for thyroid cancer in women, 94% for testis, 75% for prostate, 67% for breast cancers, and 95% was 90% was reached in 15 years. Conclusions The study findings confirmed that several cancer types are curable. Became aware of the possibility of cancer cure has relevant clinical and social impacts.

Background: Few studies have estimated the probability of being cured for cancer patients. This study aims to estimate population-based indicators of cancer cure in Europe by type, sex, age and period.Methods: 7.2 million cancer patients (42 population-based cancer registries in 17 European countries) diagnosed at ages 15-74 years in 1990-2007 with follow-up to 2008 were selected from the EUROCARE-5 dataset. Mixture-cure models were used to estimate: (i) life expectancy of fatal cases (LEF); (ii) cure fraction (CF) as proportion of patients with same death rates as the general population; (iii) time to cure (TTC) as time to reach 5-year conditional relative survival (CRS) >95%.Results: LEF ranged from 10 years for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia patients to <6 months for those with liver, pancreas, brain, gallbladder and lung cancers. It was 7.7 years for patients with prostate cancer at age 65-74 years and >5 years for women with breast cancer. The CF was 94% for testis, 87% for thyroid cancer in women and 70% in men, 86% for skin melanoma in women and 76% in men, 66% for breast, 63% for prostate and <10% for liver, lung and pancreatic cancers. TTC was <5 years for testis and thyroid cancer patients diagnosed below age 55 years, and <10 years for stomach, colorectal, corpus uteri and melanoma patients of all ages. For breast and prostate cancers, a small excess (CRS < 95%) remained for at least 15 years.Conclusions: Estimates from this analysis should help to reduce unneeded medicalization and costs. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a highly lethal cancer. Clinicians commonly refer to surgical therapy as resection with curative intent. However, PDA cure rates after resection remain unknown and the definition of cure remains vague. We investigated how patients (the majority undergoing resection), family members, and clinicians understand the concept of cure, to better inform discussions with patients regarding PDA prognosis.Methods: In a prospective survey, cohorts were asked to indicate the best definition of cure from three choices: 5-year survival endpoint (typically used in the literature), a biological endpoint without biochemical or radiographic signs of disease (similar to the NCI definition), or a practical endpoint where life span approximates similarly aged patients without PDA. Fleiss' kappa statistic was calculated to measure inter-rater agreement.Results: Patients, family members, and health care professionals (N = 200) agreed that renormalization of life expectancy was the preferred definition of cure in the context of pancreatic cancer. Inter-rater agreement was highest for the patient and family member groups (Fleiss' kappa 0.27 and 0.40, respectively, P < 0.001), while variability was observed between health care professionals (Fleiss' kappa 0.11, P < 0.001).Conclusions: In all groups surveyed, the probability for a normal life expectancy is the preferred long-term metric in patients with early-staged pancreatic cancer. Henry Snowden Ward was a professional photographer, Editor of The Photogram magazine, itinerant lecturer in England in 1896 on X-rays, and the author of the world's first textbook on X-rays, Practical Radiography, which was first published in May 1896 and went into three editions with the later editions, 1898 and 1901, expanded and co- -authored with Adolph Isenthal (d~1910), a manufacturer in London of electrical apparatus and X-ray apparatus. Ward was a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and a founding member of the Röntgen Society. As with most early demonstrators of X-rays imaging, Snowden Ward left the field once qualified physicians, surgeons, physicists and engineers became more involved and took over as the prime leaders in X-ray diagnosis and therapy. Snowden Ward went on to publish and lecture on Charles Dickens, Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and William Shakespeare. He died suddenly in December 1911 in New York whilst on a Dickens & Shakespeare lecture tour of the USA. Some of the illustrations from the three editions of Practical Radiography are included. A design of experiment (DOE) strategy applied to multi‐objective optimisation is proposed in order to evaluate the influence of design variables variations to optimised quantities. A secondary objective function is the sensitivity of a primary objective function to design variable variations evaluated by means of DOE strategy. The optimisation problem includes also a third objective function that considers device constraint because of technological limitations on power generator. The proposed case study deals with the design of an electromagnetic device that will be used to carry out laboratory experiments on magneto‐fluid hyperthermia, that is, a clinic treatment for cancer cure. The induction system is designed to apply a controlled time‐varying magnetic field to biological cells, cultured in Petri dish and mixed with magnetic nanoparticles. Original, population-based estimates of indicators of long-term survival and cure in cancer patients are provided. More than a quarter of cancer patients in Italy have reached death rates similar to those of the general population. Nearly three quarters of them will not die as a result of cancer. These estimates are potentially helpful to health-care planners, clinicians, and patients.Background Persons living after a cancer diagnosis represent 4% of the whole population in high-income countries. The aim of the study was to provide estimates of indicators of long-term survival and cure for 26 cancer types, presently lacking. Patients and methods Data on 818 902 Italian cancer patients diagnosed at age 15–74 years in 1985–2005 were included. Proportions of patients with the same death rates of the general population (cure fractions) and those of prevalent patients who were not at risk of dying as a result of cancer (cure prevalence) were calculated, using validated mixture cure models, by cancer type, sex, and age group. We also estimated complete prevalence, conditional relative survival (CRS), time to reach 5- and 10-year CRS >95%, and proportion of patients living longer than those thresholds. Results The cure fractions ranged from >90% for patients aged <45 years with thyroid and testis cancers to <10% for liver and pancreatic cancers of all ages. Five- or 10-year CRS >95% were both reached in <10 years by patients with cancers of the stomach, colon–rectum, pancreas, corpus and cervix uteri, brain, and Hodgkin lymphoma. For breast cancer patients, 5- and 10-year CRSs reached >95% after 19 and 25 years, respectively, and in 15 and 18 years for prostate cancer patients. Five-year CRS remained <95% for >25 years after cancer diagnosis in patients with liver and larynx cancers, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma, and leukaemia. Overall, the cure prevalence was 67% for men and 77% for women. Therefore, 21% of male and 31% of female patients had already reached 5-year CRS >95%, whereas 18% and 25% had reached 10-year CRS >95%. Conclusions A quarter of Italian cancer patients can be considered cured. This observation has a high potential impact on health planning, clinical practice, and patients' perspective. Over the last two decades cancer cure rates have not gone up as expected, and the effectiveness of chemotherapy has reached a plateau. This has prompted a search for targeted therapies with higher efficacy and lesser toxicities. Monoclonal antibodies against cancer cells offer targeted therapies with little or no toxicities against normal tissues. In this review we will discuss the concepts behind the development of monoclonal antibodies in cancer and their present status in the clinic. Specifically, we will discuss the clinical use of Rituximab (RituxanÓ), Trastuzumab (HerceptinÓ) and Bevacizumab (AvastinÓ) in various cancers and the key clinical trials that have led to their incorporation in cancer therapeutics. Spontaneous regression of malignancies have been documented, but it is a rare phenomenon. Most of such cases have been neuroblastoma, renal cell carcinoma or lymphoid tissue malignancies. This phenomenon has been recorded in few cases of Lung cancer also. Here we present a case of small cell lung cancer which was diagnosed with certainty. Patient did not take any treatment except the symptomatic one. As patient kept on living, and also improving, he was further investigated. Follow up X-Ray chest, Computed tomography scan showed total clearance of the tumour. Immuno-histochemistry of previous histology slides reconfirmed the diagnosis of Lung cancer. Though 8 cases of spontaneous regression of lung cancer have been reported in world literature, this is the first case which diagnosis and regression of lung cancer are confirmed without any doubts by various modalities. Many theories have been propagated to explain this phenomenon but none is proven so far. If mechanism of this phenomenon could be known, we can hope to find the cure of cancer. Introduction: This review aimed to classify major patterns of cancer cure and discuss clinical implications. Patterns of cancer cure were identified, in terms of long‐term survival and life expectancy, by means of two recently estimated indicators: cure fraction (CF) and time to cure (TTC). Methods: We considered population‐based studies reporting results for some cancer types on CF, defined as the proportion of patients who will reach the same life expectancy of the general population, or/and TTC, the time span necessary to experience a negligible excess mortality. TTC is obtained using conditional relative survival, which indicates the probability of surviving an additional y number of years, given that patients already survived x number of years. Results: Four major patterns of cancer types emerged from published studies: (a) cancers with a CF > 60% and a TTC < 5 years (e.g., testicular, thyroid); (b) cancers with a CF between 20% and 50% and a TTC < 10 years (colon, rectum); (c) cancers showing a CF of approximately 50% and TTC > 10 years (breast, prostate and bladder); (d) cancers with a CF < 20% and uncertain TTC (lung or pancreas). Conclusion: Clinical and social impact of "cancer cure" categorisation are discussed in details. Recognising a cancer patient as cured represents an opportunity to improve their quality of life.
