Attached to the middle of the base is a rifle shell, with two bullets affixed to either side to support the sockets. The size of the rifle shell cannot be determined, but it is slightly smaller than 20 mm. The bullets are likely .303-inch caliber bullets. Acting as the sockets are the bottom sections of three 20 mm shells with top edges flared outward, one on either bullet and one on the top of the middle shell. These sockets had been soldered on, and one has since broken off.

Ashtray is made of dark brass, and composed of two artillery shell sections. Due to its ambiguous shape, it may alternatively be a candlestick. The bottom section of a French 75 mm shell functions as the base, and a shortened German 37 mm shell is used for the upper piece. These two sections are attached by a thin cylindrical metal rod or tube, which may be part of the original 75 mm shell's primer.
